Message from the ChairI want to personally thank all of you who have invested in the ARTrust over the past year. Your support has been invaluable and has enabled the Trust to continue its mission of supporting the training of physicians in our specialty in order to advance optimal patient care. You have given generously and, as a result, the ARTrust has been able to support a record number of grants.

A donation to the ARTrust is truly an investment. It provides seed money to many fellows and junior faculty, which, in turn, has an exponential effect. Past award recipients have gone on in turn to train many others in our field. In addition, there is a large financial return on our investments. A recent survey showed eight of those funded generated more than $6.1 million in NIH funding and nearly $5.2 million in general funding.

Since the inception of the Trust in 1993 to 2010, we have made 52 awards totaling more than $4.25 million by funding: • Establishment of three new training programs (with the AAAAI) via the Phoenix Program: - $650,000 in support, matched dollar-for-dollar 1. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine – Two FITs per year since 2004 2. University of Mississippi School of Medicine – One to two FITs per year since 2005 3. Penn State University College of Medicine – Two to three FITs per year since 2006• Thirteen Faculty Development Awards: $2,640,000• Three Gail Shapiro Clinical Faculty Awards: $450,000, matched dollar-for-dollar• Three Faculty Salary Support Awards: $190,000• One (with JACI) Immunology Research Award: $100,000• Four Clinical Research Awards: $40,000• One Clinical Fellowship Award: $100,000• Twelve Allied Health Travel Grants: $9,000• Hurricane Katrina Relief: - Two Program Assistance Awards to Tulane and LSU: $100,000 - 10 Travel Awards to Fellows: $7,500• 60/40 Program with University of Texas

We have had many successes, but the need is always great. We are making every effort to reach out to a wide range of potential funding sources, but our base is the AAAAI. Many thanks again for your current and continued support.

2010 ARTrust Award RecipientSupporting the A/I SpecialtyIn 2010, the ARTrust continued its mission of increasing funding support for allergy/immunology education, research and training through awarding grants to two individuals.

Due to the generosity of donors, the ARTrust awarded the first Gail Shapiro Clinical Faculty Award in 2009. This award is named in memory of AAAAI Past-President, Gail Shapiro, MD FAAAAI. Dr. Shapiro served as President from 2001-2002, capping a long legacy of involvement in the Academy. Before, during and after her presidency, she was involved in many AAAAI initiatives that had a far-reaching impact on the specialty.

The Faculty Development Award was the first award granted by the ARTrust and was awarded in 1993.
