The English Department Writing Clinic is open to any JSU student currently enrolled in
one of the Freshman Composition or Basic English Skills classes. The purpose of theclinic is to help students to better understand the conventions of Standard English so thattheir assignments will be clearly and correctly written. It is not necessary to have an
appointment to attend the Writing Clinic. Students may attend a tutoring session in oneof two ways:
1. Teacher Referral: The classroom teacher can require or encourage a student toattend sessions in the clinic. In order to do so, the teacher will complete a referral
form, giving the student and his/her tutor guidelines as to the areas that needwork. An English Department Writing Clinic tutor cannot assist a student with
any work which has been assigned for a specific course without the classroomteachers permission.
2.
Voluntary Attendance: If a student finds that he/she is having difficulty with aparticular area, he/she may come to the writing clinic for help. In this case, the
tutor will not assist with classroom assignments. Instead, the student will informthe tutor of the area of difficulty, and the tutor will ask the student to write or will
go through handbook exercises in order to assist the student in betterunderstanding the area of difficulty.
Writing Clinic tutors are not allowed to proofread or edit drafts. Students who come to
the Writing Clinic requesting that their drafts be read and edited will be turned away. Please remember that it is the students responsibility to come to the clinic with a specific
need in mind.
Writing Clinic tutors will review graded assignments in order to help the student to betterunderstand his/her errors; however, students must realize that any question concerning
the grade that is assigned should be addressed to the classroom teacher, not to the WritingClinic tutor, who does not have the knowledge or experience to answer such questions.
The English Department Writing Clinic has computers and printers for student use. The
guidelines for using these machines are the following:1. Students may use these computers if they are in the Writing Clinic for a tutoring
session.2. Students may work on assignments for English courses when the computers are
available; however, they may not use the computers to work on assignments inany other discipline, to send e-mail messages, or to visit social networks. The
primary use of the computers should always be for Writing Clinic business.3. Students may not use these computers in order to print work which they have not
worked on in the Writing Clinic. This is not merely a free printing service.
