The partnership between The University of Virginia (UVA) and NOVA benefits adult students by offering them the opportunity to complete their Bachelor of Individualized Study (BIS) degree from UVA without leaving Northern Virginia. The BIS degree is a rigorous, part-time, adult degree program with evening and weekend classes held at NOVA’s Alexandria Campus. This program is open only to current and former NOVA students who have completed at least 15 hours of transferable credit with NOVA. Sixty credits in total are needed to begin the program and 60 credits are required at UVA to earn a bachelor’s degree. Students must have completed high school at least four years prior to enrolling in the BIS program. With concentrations in social science, business, and education, UVA’s BIS program at NOVA makes it possible for working adults to complete a baccalaureate degree within the context of a challenging liberal arts education, typical of any program at UVA, and do so in a highly supportive environment. Writing skills and readiness for upper division university coursework are considered for admission into the program. As busy professionals, students generally take two courses each semester, including summer, allowing them to complete their degree in three to four years. Some finish earlier and others take more time. Faculty and staff work closely with students to assist them as they work to achieve academic aspirations within realistic time frames. Prospective students receive pre- application advising and transcript review. The BIS program, now with 277 graduates, was launched ten years ago and serves adult students in Charlottesville, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia. After two years at NOVA, the UVA/BIS program now has more than 80 enrolled students, eight of whom will earn their degrees this year. Marcia Willingham, one of the current participants in the program states, “I’m honored to have been accepted into the UVA/BIS program. As a native Virginian woman who entered college at the age of 47, I was driven to achieve the one thing that had eluded me my entire adult life, a college degree. I never dreamed I would realize that goal and one day walk the lawn at The University of Virginia.” Interested NOVA alumni are encouraged to attend one of the regularly scheduled information sessions offered each semester at NOVA campuses (see schedule on NOVA transfer/partnership site) or make an appointment with Dr. Bernadette Black by e-mailing bblack@ virginia.edu. Alumni will find details on the UVA/BIS Web site at www.scps. virginia.edu/bisdegree/ as well as the NOVA transfer/partnership Web site: www.scps.virginia.edu/atscps/bis3.htm. Unofficial transcripts are reviewed promptly by e-mail at [email protected] or by fax at 434-982-5335. NOVA’S TWO NEW PROVOSTS

NOVA’s Alexandria Campus welcomed its new provost, Dr. Peter Maphumulo in January 2010. When asked about his new

position at NOVA, Maphumulo said, “It is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a College that touches and transforms so many individual lives and communities.” Maphumulo comes to NOVA from Bellevue College in Washington, where he served as vice president/executive dean. He earned a doctorate in educational administration from Washington State University, and also holds a master of arts in curriculum from the University of Montana and a bachelor of arts in English from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington.

Dr. Julie Leidig began her duties as the Loudoun Campus provost effective July 2010. When asked about her appointment she stated, “I feel so lucky to

be on the Loudoun Campus! It’s a very vibrant place, full of faculty and staff who have great ideas and want to offer the very best to our students. We are also fortunate to be situated in a dynamic and growing community. I see a very bright future ahead in which we will be able to offer ever-expanding opportunities to the students we serve.” Leidig comes to NOVA after serving six years as vice president for instruction at Lone Star College-Montgomery, Conroe, TX. Originally from Chicago, she obtained her doctorate in Educational Administration/Community College Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin, and holds a master of arts in foreign language, and a master of education in adult education and human resource development. She received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Syracuse University.

Annual NOVA 5KThe Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation hosted it’s first annual NOVA 5K Race at the Annandale Campus on Sunday, October 17, 2010. Prizes, shirts, giveaways, and snacks were provided for the many enthusiastic and energetic runners and walkers. Sponsors for the NOVA 5K Race included BB&T Bank, Todos Supermarket, Barnes and Noble, Pepsi, COSTCO, Starbucks, Summit Marketing, and Pacers Running Stores.

Dear NOVA Alumni and Friends:

It is with honor that I serve as your 2010-2011 President of the Northern Virginia Community College Alumni Federation Board of Governors. I look forward to giving back to the NOVA community and working with the fantastic group of individuals who make up this year’s Board.

Northern Virginia Community College offers classes in more than 100 degree and certificate programs that enable

students to attain their educational and career goals. I can attest to the academic excellence that NOVA has to offer its students, as well as the many scholarships that aid scholars to develop and achieve their educational goals.

When I first came to NOVA, I had just gained my G.E.D. at the age of 35 and within the next four years earned an A.A. and an A.S., as well as admittance to The George Washington University with an academic scholarship. I completed my B.A. and M.A. as a history major, and I am currently an adjunct faculty member at NOVA’s Annandale Campus. I plan to complete my Ph.D. and publish my research into the lives of early American women. None of these goals were thinkable when I first arrived at NOVA. I owe my academic success to the lessons I learned as a NOVA student, and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to show my gratitude by working with the Alumni Board.

The Alumni Board members have the opportunity to aid NOVA students with annual scholarships. In addition, we participate in acknowledging academic success by assisting with the Who’s Who

in American Junior Colleges reception and giving out tokens of appreciation to each scholar at graduation.

One of the highlights of the school year for the NVCC Alumni Board is our Faculty of the Year reception. Students and alumni are given an opportunity to nominate an outstanding professor who helped them reach their goals or even changed their lives. Each nominee is recognized at the event and a winner is selected for each campus, as well as one adjunct faculty member.

My hope for this school year is to boost participation on the NVCC Alumni Board. We welcome past and current students (you only need 30 completed credits) wishing to give back to a college that has given so much to its students and the community. We are looking for your unique skills and talents to enhance our group’s ability to serve.

For information about the NVCC Alumni Federation Board of Governors, contact Bonnie Idle, Alumni Coordinator at 703-323-3749 or at [email protected] .

Have a great school year!
