Taylor University BasketballPhilosophy Statement

Championship Teams With Championship People

Basketball at Taylor University is a unique experience. It is very demanding physically and mentally because we feel a real burden to develop the talents God has given us to the fullest. Only through overcoming obstacles and working through adversity can one know the exhilaration of the climber as he reaches the peak or the thrill of the athlete as he does that which seemed impossible. We will work together, struggle together, grow together, pray together, and ultimately succeed together. Our young men will be changed because of their participation in our basketball program. We want that change to be in the direction that God wants them to go.

This statement acknowledges that it is not so much the result as the process that God can honor and use. We will become aware of the importance of the vital personal relationships that really test and develop our faith. In other words, as a team we have to be tolerant of our own and others’ weaknesses, learn to build up each other’s strengths, and become aware that together we must endure difficult times to truly see the best in each other. As believers, we will make these spiritual priorities and look forward to the growth God gives us in these areas.

It is our purpose to help young men develop the ability to truly maximize God’s gifts in an environment where Christ-likeness and educational achievement are a priority. Number of games won, championships attained, “big game” victories achieved then become an outgrowth of an everyday attitude that our Father God is going to do something special in our lives and prepare us to minister the redemptive love of Christ to a world in need beyond the college years.

In the basketball program, results are important in that they are a large part of defining excellence and determining the quality of what we do, and yet how we do things is as important as what we do. Certain-ly, we will not be perfect, but we can be faithful. Development of the qualities of personal and team leader-ship, accountability to each other, perseverance in the face of adversity, singleness of purpose, and an under-standing of the importance of doing our best each day will help these young men lead lives of significance.

Learning To Do Something Difficult Well

In outlining these objectives, several things come to mind. They include:A. Having a passion for what is done. There is always a price to pay. II Sam. 24:18-24B. A sense of excellence about what is done. Prov. 22:29 C. Learning to do one’s best without comparison to others. Gal. 6:3-9 D. It is impossible to do one’s best without doing something good for others around you. I Cor. 13:4-7E. Being part of a team means seeing the good in each other. Play to our strengths and stay away from our weaknesses. Phil. 4:5-8F. Enjoy the process! “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him to help you do it and He will.” Ps. 37:5G. True greatness comes in serving others. Mark 10:38-45H. We really do need each other. Eccl. 4:9-12I. God works His plan -- and allows us to play a part. Judges 7J. Acceptance of life’s difficulties. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Phil. 4:11-13; James 1K. Christ is my audience. Col. 1:27

678-337 Career Record

PaulPatterson

Entering his 32nd season at Taylor University, head coach Paul Patterson has established the Trojan basketball pro-gram as a preeminent figure on the collegiate basketball landscape. In a career marked with distinction, glorious accomplishments, and immeasurable contributions to Taylor University, 2010 saw Coach Patterson reach another accomplishment--more college graduates prepared to do real work in the real world.

“I really want to coach because athletics continues to be one of the few places where you have a direct impact on young people’s lives. If a parent were to ask me, ‘Why should my son play for you?’ the answer would be, ‘At the end of four years, your son will know how to do something really hard, well.’ It is rewarding for me to see our players going into their chosen field and making an impact of their own.”

In over forty years of coaching, many things have changed, but the foundation for success remains the same--cham-pionship programs are built with championship people. “One of our strengths over the years has been to recruit championship people on and off the court. They realize

Patterson’s graduates include several successful high school teachers and coaches, college coaches, authors, doctors, counselors, ministers, administrators, business professionals, CEOs, and financial planners, many of whom have climbed to the top of their professions. Of all the sta-tistics, accomplishments, and accolades Patterson has re-ceived, the one he is the most proud of is every player to play four years for Coach Patterson has gone on to earn a college degree.

While at Taylor, Patterson has amassed a record of 678-337

(.668), won 15 conference championships, and been to 14 NAIA National Tournaments. Patterson has 12 Coach of the Year awards to his credit, including the 1990-91 NAIA Na-tional Coach of the Year honor and the 1994 NAIA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. In 1996 he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame as well as the Hanover College Athletic Hall of Fame (his alma mater). In 2010, Patterson coached in his 1,000th career game as Taylor head coach. Following the season, he was inducted into the Grant County Hall of Fame.

Ten players have earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors and 28 have been selected to MCC All-Conference, NAIA All-District or All-Region teams. In addition, Patterson has coached players to 26 NAIA All-American awards at Taylor.

Patterson-coached teams are known for being fundamen-tally sound and for playing tough, aggressive defense. Taylor consistently ranks among the NAIA’s best teams in team defense and team free throw percentage.

Arriving at Taylor University in 1979, Coach Patterson took over a program that had never been to the NAIA National Tournament nor won a conference championship. In his fifth season at the helm, Patterson managed to lead the Trojans to the 1983-84 District 21 title by defeating Tri-State University 57-30 in the championship game. Taylor fell in the National Tournament to eventual national cham-pions, Fort Hayes State.

The 1985-86 season saw the Trojans win a second district championship in thrilling fashion with a 70-69 victory over Purdue Calumet. The game marked Taylor’s first time host-ing the District 21 championship and ignited the spark of excitement that would follow TU basketball to another Na-tional Tournament. The Trojans finished that season 26-7 after falling to the College of Charleston.

1986-87 marked another exciting season in Taylor basket-ball with another district title and another trip to the na-tional tournament. The Trojans finished the season with a

25-8 record and a Sweet 16 finish after knocking off South-ern Tech in the national tournament.

In 1988-89 Taylor University posted a school best 27 wins and only eight losses and found themselves in position for another district title and automatic tournament berth. Once again, TU would prove to be the head of the class as they beat Marian College 80 - 68 for their fourth district title and trip to the national tournament.

It was the 1990-91 season that secured Taylor’s place among the elite NAIA basketball programs in the country. That team finished 34-4 and advanced to the Final Four. TU would only lose one District 21 game the entire year and run away with the championship with a 78-60 win over Franklin College.

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJAN BASKETBALL

Taylor made quick work of Francis Marion University in the opening round with a 68-47 win and then followed that up with a nail-biting win over Northern State University 60-59. The scene was set for an Elite Eight matchup for the Tro-jans with the nation’s #1 ranked team Wisconsin Eau Claire. TU prevailed 64-57 in a game the Trojans dominated from beginning to end. Central Arkansas ended the Trojans’ sto-rybook season by defeating them in the Final Four 66-60.

TU would go on to win four straight District Titles from 1991-1994 including an Elite Eight finish to add to the pre-vious Final Four finish of 1991. Over the four-year span, the Trojans compiled a 119 - 21 record for an .850 winning per-centage.

From 1984-94, the Trojans recorded ten straight years with 25 or more wins, a feat that has only been achieved by three other schools at any level of collegiate basketball (UCLA, UNLV, and Lipscomb). The ten-year record was 271-69 (.797). Taylor also managed to win eight conference ti-tles and make eight trips to the NAIA National Tournament over the same ten-year span.

Taylor eventually moved from District 21 to the current Mid-Central College Conference where they captured a conference crown in 1997 with a thrilling 96-95 double overtime victory over the nation’s #1 ranked team, Bethel College.

After experiencing such tremendous success over two decades, Coach Patterson proved up to the challenge of a third decade of domination by leading his troops to five straight conference championships from 2002-2006.

The five-year time frame saw the Trojans win 127 games with only 39 losses, a winning percentage of .765. High-lights included a regular season conference title in 2002 and 2003, a conference tournament championship in 2004, a regular season championship and conference tour-nament championship in 2005, as well as a regular season championship and a Sweet 16 finish in 2006.

I don’t know of anyone in this profession that puts more energy and thought into the development, on and off the court, of his student-athletes. He is one of the nation’s best.”-Brad Stevens, Head Coach, Butler University

He played basketball and baseball for Hanover College and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in physical education and mathematics from Hanover in 1964. He also played four years of semipro baseball.

Patterson went on to earn his Master’s Degree in educa-tion from Central Missouri State in 1965. He served as a graduate assistant coach at Central Missouri in 1965.

From there, Patterson served as head coach at high schools in Spencer, Ind. (1965-68); Somerset, Ky. (1968-70); and Amelia, Ohio (1970-71). He was an assistant coach at Northwest Missouri State University from 1971-75.

Prior to his arrival at Taylor, Patterson was the head coach at Ashland Paul Blazer High School (Ky.), one of the pre-mier high school programs in the country, from 1975-79. While at Blazer, his team made the Kentucky State Tourna-ment each year and was named Conference Coach of the Year in 1977.

In 1978 he served as the head coach of the United States All-Stars at the Derby Classic, and in 1979 he led the Ken-tucky All-Stars to two wins over the Indiana All-Stars in the annual Kentucky-Indiana High School All-Star series. In 2003 Paul Blazer High School honored Patterson with the Distinguished Tomcat Award.

In addition to his coaching duties, Patterson is an associ-ate professor in the Physical Education and Human Perfor-mance department at Taylor. He also serves as the director each summer for the Taylor Basketball Camp, which has been held on Taylor’s campus for the past 53 years and has over 65,000 alumni.

Active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Pat-terson has worked at FCA basketball camps for 19 years. He also is a much sought after speaker at basketball clinics across the nation. During the 1994-95 season, he served as the President of the NAIA Basketball Coaches Association.

What former players are sayingabout Patterson

“Coach Patterson taught me to be tough, disciplined, and dedicated as a student, player, and as a man. It took me a while, but I learned that behind the tough and demand-ing exterior of Coach Patterson is a man who cares in-tensely for his players. He expected much, but he also cared much. Coach P’s record of excellence on the court speaks for itself. His record off the court, of preparing and shaping men to pursue excellence in life, is even more impressive.”-Scott Dean ‘90

“Coach Patterson’s passion and desire for the game is undeniable. He is a master of getting his players to play at the highest level possible. The values he displays are values I have carried with me into the working world.”-Eric Ford, ‘06

“I had the priviledge of playing on the first Paul Patterson team at Taylor. Paul is the greatest leader I have ever been around. There are few men I have respected more.”-Joe Coffey ‘82

“The blessings were many in playing for Coach Patterson. Both the tangible and the obvious ones at the time, learn-ing about traits such as discipline, hard work, and deter-mination. Since that time I have found more life lessons were not only taught but demonstrated on a daily basis.” -Pete Newhouse ‘91

“As a mentor, coach, and friend, Coach P gave me an ir-replaceable experience at Taylor. Over the years, he gave me a wealth of knowledge regarding life, basketball, and what it means to be a Christian in a competitive world.”-Mike Parsons ‘05

“Coach Patterson has been one of the most influential people in my life. Coach Patterson gave me a sense of what a competitive athletic experience should be in a Christian’s life. The challenge of the competitive sports experience wasn’t about trying to win a game or a champi-onship. The challenge was to become the best you could become while helping your team to do the same.” -David Close ‘81

“I would not be the man I am without the influence of Coach Patterson in my life. He encouraged me to grow in my life for a sport, but more importantly he helped me grow in the Lord. Coach has a long list of men that came to Taylor as boys that are winning in their careers and in their families and in their walk with the Lord. This is Coach’s greatest achievement.-Tim Taylor ‘95

“Coach Patterson is a great teacher, master motivator, sympathetic friend and an incredible basketball mind. The statistics speak for themselves but what the stats don’t tell is the number of lives touched and changed by this tough-minded, good-hearted, Christian leader.”-Rod Chandler ‘92

Brad Zarges is entering his first season as Taylor’s top assistant coach. Zarges spent the last 11 seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y.

While at Houghton, Zarges also held the position of assistant athletic director, and taught in the school’s physical education and recreation department. With a Master’s in Sport Sciences from East Tennessee State University, Zarges will continue his teaching responsibilities at Taylor in the physical education and human performance department.

The newest addition to the Trojans’ coaching staff is actively involved in the national basketball scene, having just completed his term as President of the NAIA-National Association of Basket-ball Coaches executive committee.

A native of White Plains, N.Y., Zarges began his coaching career as a student assistant at Hough-ton under then head coach and Taylor alumnus Steve Brooks in 1989. After earning his Hough-ton degree in physical education with a Bible minor, Zarges was named full-time assistant un-der Brooks in 1992.

In 1994 Zarges was named assistant coach at King College (Tenn.), where he served for five years under another Taylor graduate, Scott Polsgrove, and helped turn around a struggling program. The team improved from five wins during the 1994-95 season to 20 wins, captur-ing a conference championship, and earning an NAIA Division II national tournament berth in 1998.

As co-director of Houghton’s successful summer basketball camps, Zarges helped double camp enrollment over the last 11 years to become one of the largest basketball camps in west-ern New York.

Zarges was also actively involved in Houghton’s sports ministry outreach, taking his teams on short-term summer mission trips to the Czech Republic and Guatemala.

He lives in Upland with his wife, Bev, and their three children.

Ryan FrostAssistant Coach

Ryan Frost enters his first season as the second assistant coach for the Trojans. Frost comes to Taylor from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University where he most recently served as the top assis-tant coach and head coach of the junior varsity team.

During the seven years he spent at MVNU, Frost helped lead the Cougars to an impressive 176-53 record (.768) with six trips to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

Frost spent the 1999-2000 season on the coaching staff at Valparaiso (Ind.) University, which included a trip to the 2000 NCAA Division I Tournament. He spent a year at Indiana Wesleyan University (2000-2001) while obtaining his master’s degree in sports administration from Ball State University.

A 1998 graduate of Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, Frost then took the position as top assis-tant coach at Geneva (Pa.) College from 2001-2005 followed by a return to his alma mater.

Frost, who is a native of Clifton Park, N.Y., resides in Marion with his wife, Joni, and their daughter.

STuDENT-ATHLETE ACADEmIC SuPPORT

Taylor University’s athletic department maintains high academic and graduation goals for approximately 300 student-athletes involved in its intercollegiate athletic program.

To help achieve these goals, Taylor created the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program in 1998. Student achievement and performance has continued to improve ever since. After the spring 2010 semester, the cumu-lative grade point average for all student-athletes was 3.25. There were also 81 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Dean’s List during the spring semester with a 3.60 minimum grade point average.

Fourteen of Taylor’s fifteen intercollegiate athletic teams were recognized by the NAIA as scholar teams for the 2009-2010 academic year. To be named a scholar team, the team’s average GPA must be 3.0 or above.

Taylor student-athletes commit countless hours to practices, competitions, and training. The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program seeks to assist student-athletes in the effort to balance those hours with their aca-demic demands. All incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes attend seminars during the fall semester that discuss topics such as time and stress management, study skills, learning styles, test taking, and campus resources. The program also offers a monitored study table, tutor possibilities, and academic advising. Upon the request of their respective coaches, returning student-athletes also become involved in the program.

Scott Stan enters his first year as the director of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program. He oversees all details of the program and works in conjunction with the Academic Enrichment Center to connect student-athletes with the tutoring program and the writing center. In addition, he is also the staff mentor of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council which is comprised of one student-athlete from each varsity team. Their goal is to be a voice for student-athletes and to unify Taylor athletic teams while maintaining the Taylor University vision of reflecting Christ through their words and actions. The council also seeks out service opportunities for Taylor ath-letic teams to become involved in the community.

ATHLETIC ADmINISTRATION

Now in her 19th year at Taylor, former Trojan head women’s volleyball coach Dr. Angie Fincannon enters her third year as Taylor’s director of intercollegiate athletics. “As director of intercollegiate athletics, I’m con-fident that Dr. Fincannon’s leadership will advance and strengthen Taylor’s athletic program,” said Dr. Stephen Bedi, Taylor’s provost. “She is recognized and respected by her peers as a colleague and winning coach who took the women’s volleyball program to a national level of promi-nence.” Administrative duties for Fincannon include over-seeing the entire operation of the Trojans’ 15-sport athlet-ic department. She is responsible for the budgeting, per-sonnel evaluations, facilities management, representing the department at various organizational meetings, and the overall leadership of the department.

Fincannon also serves as the assistant to the pro-vost for Taylor’s Bahamian Global Engagement Program. She oversees the coordination of a program that will re-cruit Bahamian students, offer Taylor students the oppor-tunity to study at the College of the Bahamas, participate in sports ministry, as well as develop partnerships with churches, Christian ministries and over 100 alumni. A holder of three degrees from Ball State Univer-sity, including a master’s (‘90) and doctorate (‘04) in edu-cational administration, Fincannon led Taylor’s Physical Education and Human Performance department for five years. For the past two years she served as the dean of hu-man performance and athletics after a two-year stint as associate dean for special projects in Taylor’s office of aca-demic affairs. Fincannon began her time at Taylor in 1992 when she was hired as Taylor’s head volleyball coach and as an assistant professor of PHP. That was the beginning of a successful 13-year coaching career for the 2006 Taylor Uni-versity Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. During that span, Fincannon amassed a career record of 496-131 for a .791 winning percentage. Her teams won seven Mid-Central College Conference championships and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament four times (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001). The Dream Team of 1997 finished the season with a school record 48-3 mark and advanced to the Elite 8 of the national tournament. Fincannon was named MCC Coach of the Year five times, coached 10 All-Americans, and led her teams on three mission trips.

Amy Stucky is serving Taylor Athletics for her 16th year. A 1992 Taylor graduate with a major in biology and a specialization in athletic training, she received her Mas-ter’s Degree from Ball State University in Higher Education Administration in 1998. Stucky worked for Fox Valley Orthopedics in Elgin, Ill., as an athletic trainer for two years before returning to Taylor, where she served for 13 years as an athletic trainer. With her primary role being the day-to-day opera-tions of the athletic department, Stucky has played a ma-jor role in progressively improving Taylor Athletics. As the liaison between athletics and information technology, Stucky is the department’s technology spe-cialist. She begins her third year of service on the univer-sity assessment council. Stucky also serves as an assistant professor in the physical education and human performance department. She is an active member of Hazlewood Christian Church in Muncie, Ind., where she also resides.

The Trojans will once again be a team committed to excellence on the defensive end. Last year’s squad ranked tenth in NAIA D-II in scoring defense, giving up just over 65 points per contest. With a stout defense and a group of skilled offensive players the Trojans have the tools to return to the champion-ship form that has defined Taylor’s basketball tradition.

The Backcourt

The backcourt is unquestionably the strength of the 2010-11 Taylor basketball team. Senior swingman Drew Tower brings the experience that comes from playing in 91 games over the past three sea-sons. The 6’4 senior averaged 4.4 points per game last season, while knocking down 33 three-pointers. Tower provides stability and lead-ership for Patterson on both ends of the court.

Junior Kyle Hanaway enters his third season in a Taylor uniform as the floor general for the Trojans. The Crown Point, Ind., native start-ed 27 games last season and aver-aged over 30 minutes per contest while distributing the ball and accu-mulating 121 assists compared to only 56 turnovers. While Hanaway only averaged three points per con-test he was effective as a shooter, knocking down 11 of 20 three-point attempts.

Sophomore Casey Coons was the leading scorer for the Trojans last season as the Indianapolis, Ind., native averaged 15.6 points per game and led the team with 68 three-pointers. The MCC Newcomer of the Year last season started all 30 games of his fresh-man campaign and averaged 35 minutes per contest while scoring 468 points and dishing out 102 assists. Coons will once again be a vital part of the Trojans’ offense as Patterson designs even more ways

Following back-to-back subpar seasons, the 2010-11 Taylor team looks to return to championship form. Head coach Paul Patterson, entering his 32nd season, will field a young but experienced squad that should only get better as the season progresses. The Trojans return all five starters from last sea-son and the top three scorers from last year’s squad. In all, the Taylor returners averaged 49.9 points per game which was 74 percent of all Taylor scoring last season.

This year’s team features a talented trio of guards that played in every game last season and accounted for 274 of Taylor’s 403 assists during the 2009-10 season. The guards are joined by two return-ing post players that combined to average over 18 points and 8 rebounds a game last season and will be asked to provide consistent low post scoring. Patterson will be meshing the talented group of returners with two incoming fresh-men. Both newcomers averaged over 18 points per game last sea-son as high school seniors and will be leaned on to provide depth and contributions off the bench early in the season.

to get the guard the ball in scoring position.

Sophomore Tommy Peller served as a great complimentary scor-ing option alongside Coons last season. The 6’2 sophomore also started all 30 games last winter in his first season on campus. Peller was second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game last season while being named an MCC All-Conference Honorable

Mention honoree. Peller knocked down 45 three-point field goals and shot almost 40% from beyond the arc while pulling down 3.3 rebounds per game and dishing out 51 assists.

Adding depth to the Trojans’ backcourt are sophomores Jake Hoffman and Nathan Burdette. Hoffman played in 19 games last season and connected on 6 of 15 shots from three-point range. The Tipton, Ind., native will be called upon to provide a spark off the bench, and could see his 5 minutes per game average rise as the sea-son continues.

Rounding out the Trojan back-court is 6’1 freshman Ben Raichel. Raichel is a native of Austin, Ind. and has a knack for scoring the ball. The shooting guard averaged over 18 points a game as a senior at Austin High School and was a sharpshooter from long range as Raichel made a school record 174 three-pointers during his high school career.

The Frontcourt

Junior Jake Burkholder and sopho-more Nate Kasper lead a Trojan frontcourt that showed glimpses of great play last season but will need to be more consistent for Patterson if the Trojans are to return to cham-pionship form.

Burkholder started 11 of the 30 games in which he appeared last season. The 6’9 center averaged 7.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while also blocking a team high 26 shots in 495 minutes of action. The Crown Point, Ind., native will see more minutes this year and Trojan fans should hope he continues to knock down shots at the 60 percent success rate with which he fired in 2009-10.

Joining Burkholder on the block will be sophomore Nate Kasper. Kasper was the third leading scor-ing for Taylor last season as the 6’9 forward averaged 10.8 points per game while also pulling

down 4 rebounds per contest. The Valparaiso, Ind., native started 22 contests for Taylor and became the go-to post scorer by the end of his freshman season. Kasper con-nected on over 60 percent of his shots from the field and also made opposing teams pay for putting him on the foul line as he hit 83.3 per-cent of his free throws.

While Kasper and Burkholder will start the season as the proven commodities in the post, fresh-man Josh Riikonen will also make an impact in the paint. The 6’7 forward from Elkhart, Ind. comes to Taylor after a decorated career at Elkhart Central High School. Riikonen averaged a double-dou-ble during his senior season as the athletic forward posted 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per con-test. Riikonen is a skilled offensive player and will see more minutes as he becomes accustomed to the college game.

The Schedule

The 2010-11 schedule will once again feature a plethora of top notch competition. Taylor will play 14 games against teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Trojans open the sea-son at home against Cincinnati Christian before hitting the road for two games at the Purdue-Calumet Tip-Off Classic.

Following three non-conference games, the Trojans start off the Mid-Central College Conference season with a game at preseason No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan on Nov. 23. The IWU game kicks off a stretch of four games in 12 days that will include the Trojans against the defending NAIA national cham-pions and preseason No. 1 Saint Francis Cougars at home on Nov. 30.

The annual Silent Night game will be played on Dec. 10 as the Trojans take on Ohio State-Marion in the first game of the Ivanhoe Classic. The Ivanhoe Classic wraps up on Dec. 11 where the Trojans will face either Bethel (Tenn.) or Berea (Ky.).

The MCC is always stacked full of talented teams but this year the conference may be even more impressive. Six of the nine MCC teams are either ranked or receiv-ing votes in the preseason poll and the conference features the reign-ing national champions in Saint Francis. Not only did the Cougars run through the national tourna-ment as a 15-seed last March but they return all five starters from that squad and are certainly the preseason favorites to win the conference.

Taylor wraps up a challenging reg-ular season at home on Senior Day as the Trojans host Bethel on Feb. 19.

The professional ranks call it “rebuild-ing”. The 2009-10 Taylor men’s bas-ketball team will call it the University of Hard Knocks. Relying heavily on a talented group of underclassmen, the Trojans managed just an 11-19 record overall while laying a foundation for the future.

Those eight freshmen and sopho-mores combined for 79 percent of the team’s playing time and 81 percent of the scoring, led by MCC Newcomer of the Year Casey Coons’ team-best 15.6 points per game. The club’s top three leading scorers (Coons; Tommy Peller, 11.8 points per game; and Nate Kasper, 10.8) and four of the five players in the regular starting rotation, includ-ing Brock Woodward, who averaged a team-high 5.2 rebounds per game, were all freshmen, while junior Drew Tower and senior Justin Goeglein pro-vided the notable contributions from upperclassmen.

Most would assume to ease a young group of up-and-comers into college basketball with a lighter schedule, but these upstarts were thrown to the fire with two NCAA Division II clubs on the schedule and 14 teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25 or receiving votes in the polls, including seven in the top 12.

Don’t be fooled by the record though. These Trojans were battle tested and responded to the challenge post-

ing signature wins over Indiana Tech (RV), thanks to a buzzer beating three pointer by Peller, who was named Honorable Mention All-Conference, and a six-point home win over then-No. 4 Bethel, thanks to 19 points from Coons, 17 from Peller and a team 55.1 percent shooting clip from the field.

And they were mere possessions away from several other signature wins as nine of the season’s 19 losses were by six points or less and the point differ-ential against ranked opponents was a slim -6.5 points per game.

To prepare for the brutal regular sea-son schedule, Taylor opened the year with exhibition games against even-tual NCAA Div. I runner-up Butler Uni-versity at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse and Ohio University, who won the Mid-America Conference tournament championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tourna-ment.

Opening the regular season with three straight wins, the Trojans jumped out to a 6-2 start but could not seem to gain any momentum throughout the year. Two conference losses to No. 12 Huntington and No. 25 Spring Arbor were followed by a split in the Ivan-hoe Classic and a road loss at No. 8 Cedarville. Another pair of wins kept the fighting Trojans above .500 (9-6) but a loss vs. NCAA Div. II Ferris State

and a two point loss to NCAA Div. II Gannon on the second day of a two-day tournament closed the gap.

The Trojans won their first league game on Jan. 5 vs. Marian to improve to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-Central College Conference.

However, the youngsters entered the win column just one more time the rest of the season (vs. No. 4 Bethel) and ended the year on a nine-game losing streak. Those nine games were lost by an average of six points and came against five top 25 teams includ-ing a five-point loss to eventual NAIA National Champion Saint Francis and a two-point loss to top 10 mainstay Indiana Wesleyan to end the season.

Despite a rocky road that left the Tro-jans outside of the MCC postseason tournament, there is nothing new un-der the sun for head coach Paul Patter-son who coached in his 1,000th game at the helm of the Trojans on Dec. 22 and was inducted into his third hall of fame, this time the Grant County Hall of Fame.

The Trojan legend will watch fresh-man become sophomores and soph-omores become juniors and hopeful-ly enjoy the fruits of a team persisting through the hard knocks.

Taylor University’s home court, Odle Arena, officially opened in 1975. The building is named for former Taylor coach Don Odle, who coached basketball at Taylor for 31 years. In addition to the main arena floor, the facility houses the offices of the Taylor University Intercollegiate Athletic Department, the athletic training department, the depart-ment of Physical Education and Human Performance, and the Taylor fitness center. Locker rooms, racquetball courts, classrooms, a concession stand, and the Taylor Athletic Hall of Fame are also located in Odle Arena.

Prior to the construction of Odle, the Trojans played their home contests in Maytag Gym (now Rediger Chapel/Auditorium).

During the summer of 1998, Odle Arena underwent a major renovation. The university replaced the old floor surface with a maple wood floor, which has significantly enhanced the arena’s appearance.

In the fall of 2004 the University opened the Kesler Student Activities Center, which is connected to the west side of Odle Arena. The Kesler Center provides a field house with one wooden and three synthetic courts for recreational, intramural, and intercollegiate activities. The new facility also has a six-lane indoor track, a new fitness center, and new locker room facilities.
