Saint Michael’s College, one of the nation’s Best Liberal Art

Colleges in the 2008 U.S. News and World Report rankings and one of

The Princeton Review’s Best 368 Colleges, is a Catholic liberal arts col-

lege committed to creating a life-changing educational experience

for students from throughout New England, the nation and the

world.

Saint Michael's involves 2,000 undergraduate students in an on-

campus residential community characterized by lifelong volunteer

service, global perspectives and exceptional teaching in traditional

arts and sciences, as well as contemporary fields of study. The

College is situated on 440 scenic acres overlooking Burlington and

Lake Champlain, with superlative views of Vermont's Green

Mountains. The Saint Michael's community is further enriched by

approximately 500 graduate students and 200 international students

in the College's School of International Studies, one of the nation's

oldest intensive English language institutes.

A vibrant campus experience encompasses everything from

sports to academic enrichment, to the fine and performing arts, to

the unique international character of the college. Saint Michael’s is

known as a terrific place for students who want to make the world a

better place, as service to the community and to all humankind is a

vibrant part of student life, reflecting the heritage of service of the

Edmundite priests who founded Saint Michael's--the one and only

Edmundite college in the world--in 1904. Today, more than 70 per-

cent of the student body actively pursues community service proj-

ects through Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (M.O.V.E.), reflect-

ing a unique passion for social justice issues on campus.

With nearly 100 percent of undergraduates living on campus,

residential life is designed to enable academic pursuits, co-curricular

activities, and the pure enjoyment of the college years and the

Vermont experience to converge in a total Saint Michael's College

experience. The Tarrant Recreation Center and Ross Sports Center

form the epicenter for athletic and recreational activities on campus.

The College offers 21 intercollegiate sports that compete at the

NCAA Division II level with all but four teams participating in the

highly competitive Northeast-10 Conference, the second-largest

Division II conference in the nation.

For students who are looking for something slightly less com-

petitive, there is a wide variety of club and intramural sports such as

rugby, basketball, softball and even table tennis. Our acclaimed

Wilderness Program also bring students into the great Vermont out-

doors for adventure sports and survival training, from beginner to

advanced certification levels.

Saint Michael's is home to Greater Burlington's only Actor's

Equity professional summer theater, the Saint Michael's Playhouse.

On North Campus at historic Fort Ethan Allen, the Elley-Long

Music Center at Saint Michael's College is headquarters for the

Vermont Youth Orchestra Association and provides rehearsal and

performance space for the Vermont Mozart Festival. In recent years

Saint Michael’s students and professors have received Rhodes,

Woodrow Wilson, Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Science

Foundation and other grants, and Saint Michael’s professors have

been named Vermont Professor of the Year in four of the last eight

years.

The Princeton Review features Saint Michael’s in its 2009

edition of “Best 368 Colleges”, the fourth straight year that

Saint Michael’s has earned this distinction.

towns. Burlington is a thriving community that has just the right combi-

nation of cultural activities, great food, shopping, and outdoor pursuits.

A&E Television called Burlington the country’s No. 1 city in its “Top Ten

Currently in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has

established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II

conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 15 north-

eastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, three from

New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and

one from Vermont.

Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many

changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from

10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce

College, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint

Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New

Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In

2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing

Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I.

The NE-10 women’s tennis schedule is comprised of 13 match-

es, with each school playing its conference opponents once. The sea-

son is capped off by an eight-team conference tournament. The win-

ner of the conference tournament receives an automatic berth to the

NCAA Division II Northeast Regional tournament.

Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and

women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey,

football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse,

men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming

and diving, men’s tennis, and volleyball.

Greg Cluff

Head Coach

Greg Cluff, the winningest coach

in the history of the Saint Michael's

women's tennis program and the

2007-08 Northeast-10 Conference

Coach of the Year, enters his eighth

season as head coach in 2010-11. He

has compiled a 86-47 through seven

seasons, with each squad finishing at

least two games above .500.

In 2009-10, Cluff led Saint

Michael's to a 12-9 record, as the

Purple Knights qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for

the third straight season. Saint Michael's also advanced to the NE-10

Semifinals for the seventh straight season, compiling a 10-3 regular-

season conference mark, and Cluff was named the Saint Michael's

2009-10 Coach of the Year on April 29, the second time in three

years he was so honored (and third time in six seasons).

In 2008-09, Cluff guided the Purple Knights to a 14-7 record

(one win shy of the program record set the year prior), and helped

the program return to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Saint

Michael's qualified as the sixth seed in the East region, the program's

highest ranking in the NCAAs.

In 2007-08, Cluff led the team to a 15-7 season, the most wins

in program history. The team finished second in the NE-10 with a

10-2 record, and advanced to the NE-10 Championship. The pro-

gram also earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II

Tournament. For his efforts, Cluff was named the Saint Michael's

2007-08 Coach of the Year on May 1.

In 2006-07, Cluff led the Purple Knights to a 14-7 record, at the

time the most victories in program history. Saint Michael's earned a

share of the NE-10 regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the

NE-10 Tournament, advancing to the championship match. Cluff's

squad also earned the NE-10 Sportsmanship Award for women's

tennis.

Cluff has extensive coaching experience in the greater

Burlington area. He has spent more than 30 years (1969-81, 1990-

present) as the boy's tennis coach at Champlain Valley Union High

School in Hinesburg, where he served as a social studies teacher for

38 years. Cluff has led the team to four state championships (1977-

78, 1999-2000) and eight finals appearances under his tutelage,

including six consecutive finals berths from 1997-2002.

In addition to his high school and college coaching experience,

Cluff has also taught tennis for many summers. Since 2002, he has

been a tutor for the Town of Shelburne Recreation Tennis Program,

and from 1991-95 worked at the Burlington Tennis Club.

Cluff also is the College's coordinator of athletics admissions,

helping recruiting efforts between admissions and athletics. He has

served in this part-time capacity since the summer of 2008.

Amy Berkman

Assistant Coach

Amy Berkman returns to the

Saint Michael’s College women’s ten-

nis team for her third season as an

assistant coach in 2010-11

In 2009-10, Berkman helped

guide the Purple Knights to a 12-9

record, including a 10-3 mark in NE-

10 play, and the program's third con-

secutive appearance in the NCAA

Division II Tournament.

Berkman was a four-year standout at Middlebury College,

where she graduated in 2008 with a degree in biochemistry. As a

freshman, she helped the Panthers reach the NCAA Division III

National Tournament, and as a senior co-captain, she guided

Middlebury to a 10-5 record.

A native of Shelburne, Vt., Berkman was a top student-athlete

at nearby Rice Memorial High School.

Season Outlook

5www.smcathletics.com

Two years removed from the finest season in the program’s 28-

year history in 2007-08, the Saint Michael’s College women’s tennis

team will look to build upon the winning tradition instilled by

eighth-year head coach and 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Coach

of the Year Greg Cluff.

Along with Cluff, assistant coach Amy Berkman has already

helped the Purple Knights get off to a raging start with a perfect 5-

0 fall season. Saint Michael’s was picked to finish third in the con-

ference according to the NE-10 Preseason Coaches Poll, and enter

the spring ranked ninth in the East region in the 2010-11

Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) College Tennis

Rankings.

Seniors

The Purple Knights will be led by their core of three top

notch seniors: Marybeth Ash, Deahna Giguere and Marran

Ranks. The trio combined for 55 wins between singles and dou-

bles play last season, with Giguere getting All-Conference First

Team honors. Ranks had a terrific fall season and was named the

NE-10 Player of the Week in mid-September, and Ash was named

to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll in October.

Juniors

Juniors Eileen Mullowney and Emily Ogilvy are ready to

step into larger roles in 2011 and provide midlevel strength to the

Saint Michael’s squad. Ogilvy was named to the 2010 All-Conference

First Team for the #3 doubles spot and will likely remain there given

her past success. Mullowney, sidelined with an injury after just two

matches last year, is back at full strength with a chance to showcase

her abilities over a full season.

Sophomores

Three sophomores round out the Saint Michael’s roster, and

have shown tennis savvy beyond their years. Alex Dalton, Emily

Magee and Jean-Marie McGrath combined to win 73 percent of

their matches as freshmen, including a staggering 30-9 record in sin-

gles play.

Dalton received an All-Conference Second Team nod at #5 sin-

gles, and McGrath posted a perfect 11-0 record in singles action last

season. Magee emerged as a top choice for doubles play, going 6-1

between #1 and #2 doubles last season and earning a perfect 5-0

record at #1 doubles this fall.

Senior Deahna Giguere was an All-Conference First Team

selection in 2010 and should be a staple at #1 singles.Senior Marybeth Ash had a team-best 13 doubles wins in

2010, and should join forces with Ranks at the #2 doubles

spot.
