On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics,
Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration.
Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.
Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan men’s basketball. I am confident that Coach Bill Brown, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the basketball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place- finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment.
I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such
as Hamer Hall. Basketball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010-11 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

ABOUT C
AL UUNIVERSITY PROFILE
ABOUT US
California University of Pennsylvania, a comprehensive regional institution of higher education and a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is a diverse, caring and scholarly learning community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts, science and technology, and professional studies that is devoted to building character and careers, broadly defined. The University is inspired by its
core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility and is guided by its Bill of Rights and Responsibilities: We have the right to safety and security; We have the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of others; We have the right to be treated with respect; We have the responsibility to treat others with respect; We have the right to expect the best; We have the responsibility to give our best; We have the right to be treated fairly; We have the responsibility to treat others fairly.
MISSION: BUILDING CHARACTER AND CAREERS
To advance its ultimate mission of building the character and careers of students, the University shall focus its efforts on three goals: student achievement and success, institutional excellence, and community service. These interrelated ends will be facilitated by the following means: high quality faculty, students, programs and facilities. These means, in turn, will be funded through an energetic program of resource acquisition and stewardship.
LEGACY
Founded in 1852, and now in its second 150 years of service, the University is committed above all to academic excellence and intellectual rigor in the context of personal and institutional Integrity, Civility and Responsibility.
THE CAMPUS
Cal U’s 190-acre campus is nestled on a bend of the Monongahela River in the borough of California, Pa., 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. One of the first things you’ll notice when you visit for the first time is the natural beauty. Tree-lined lawns, broad walkways and exquisite landscaping surround restored historic buildings and new residence halls that have been recognized by the National Building Museum as among the finest in the nation. The Arboretum at California University of Pennsylvania is a public garden encompassing our 92-acre lower campus. We’re building an extensive collection that includes examples of nearly every tree indigenous to Pennsylvania. Lovely stained glass windows featuring Pennsylvania wildflowers, which grace the Grand Hall of Old Main, were created by Leslie Parkinson, emeritus professor of art. Another favorite site is the Manderino Library Gallery, an intimate space that features exhibitions from the Carnegie Museum of Art and other top museums and private collections. Take time to stroll through our sculpture garden, which features the magnificent “Ascent of Humanity” sculpture near the Duda World Cultures Building.
At Cal U, we’re small enough to feel like family, yet large enough to offer variety and diversity. Spend some time getting to know us! Take a virtual tour online, come visit or request information to learn more about campus life at Cal U.
CAMPUS LIFE
Cal U is known for its diverse and dedicated student body, nationally recognized housing, recently renovated facilities, varied events and activi-ties and countless opportunities to get involved. You’ll find a strong sense of community and traditions guided by the spirit of service and a sense of pride. In short, you’ll find a home here at Cal U. Become a part of a University dedicated to building character and building careers. Take a virtual tour, come visit or request information to learn more about campus life at Cal U.
LIVING AT CAL U
If you are a first-time freshman from outside commuting distance to the University, you will reside in Univer-sity housing for the first four semesters of your college career as space permits. But you won’t find dorms at Cal U. Here stu-dents live “The Suite Life,” enjoying roomy suites in new buildings. All six of Cal U’s residence halls have been built in recent years. Along with comfortable rooms, the halls feature well-designed common areas for socializing, including lounges with large-screen TVs and DVD players, as well as full kitchen areas and comfortable seating, not to mention rec rooms with ping pong and pool tables. Community assistants serve as leaders and facilitators within each hall. These students (graduate or undergraduate) live on designated floors and assist in overall operation. All are available through an on-call system 24 hours a day, with schedules and contact information posted throughout the building. The community assistants dedicate considerable time and ef-fort to developing community. They help students understand and comply with University and residence hall rules, and they plan programs and activi-ties to help make the most of the residence hall experience. Residence hall directors supervise each hall and work to ensure living on campus is productive and safe. These professionals (who have master’s degrees related to education and student development) live in the halls. The residence hall directors assist individuals and student groups, encour-age community development, promote academic success, handle hall conduct issues, supervise student staff and act as the liaison for facility is-sues.
VISIT US
It’s never too early to see how you will fit in at California University of Pennsylvania. Throughout the year we host several special events de-signed for everyone from high school juniors to students who have already applied. You can also schedule an individual visit that includes a meeting with an admissions counselor. Individual visits start at the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Eberly Science and Technology Building. This is the place to pick up literature about the University, watch a video and take a campus tour with a student ambassador. At the end of the tour, you will sit down with one of our admis-sions counselors and get answers to your specific questions. Plan to spend about two hours and 30 minutes when you visit, and feel free to bring your family or a couple of friends.

touches on a parking facility set to open this fall. Vulcan Garage offers more than 660 parking spaces, including spots
set aside for campus visitors. Adjacent to Hamer Hall, the Convocation Center is taking shape.
Underground utilities have been installed and the steel frame is rising. Designed as a regional asset, this state-of-the-art building features a 6,000-seat arena and executive conference facilities equipped with cutting-edge “smart” technology.
The Convocation Center is scheduled for completion in 2011.
The Convocation Center takes shape. The building will be faced with brick to match others on campus.
Parking is available on five levels in the new Vulcan Garage.
Nearly 400 laborers and skilled workers have worked at the Convocation Center site.

2010-11 PREVIEW
It’s been a tough couple of years for the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team since appearing in the 2008 NCAA Elite Eight. However, head coach Bill Brown and the Vulcans appear ready to close legendary Hamer Hall in vintage fashion during the 2010-11 season. “Hamer Hall is steeped in tradition; there have been a lot of championships played on that floor,” said 15th-year head coach
Bill Brown. “We have won a lot of exciting games here with a lot of them decided in the last minute. It’s been a tremendous home court advantage over the years.” The historic venue has been the long-time home for the Vulcans, who have won eight Pennsy lvan ia S tate Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships and made over a dozen N C A A To u r n a m e n t appearances s ince the 3,500-seat arena opened.
After missing the PSAC Tournament in back-to-back years for the first time in two decades, Cal U will feature a new foundation for Brown to mentor. The Vulcans return only five players and one starter from a team that finished 18-11 overall and fifth in the PSAC West standings with a 6-8 mark. “Everyone who returns is improved,” said Brown. “We have size and experience in Rashawd Hatten and Chad Tipton. Also, all the young men we brought in have leadership qualities and are used to winning.” Tipton, a 6-5 swingman, started the final 12 games last year and was named the team captain during preseason camp. A veteran junior, he has played in nearly 40 games over the last two seasons after a prolific high-school career in which he scored over 1,500 points. An athletic forward, Hatten was the only player to appear in all 29 games (14 starts) last season after transferring from Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). The 6-7 senior returns as the team’s leading scorer and rebounder and made nearly 52 percent from the field. At CCAC, Hatten was an all-region selection in 2009 and helped lead the program to the Junior College National
Championships for the first time in almost 15 years. The Vulcans wi l l feature a familiar face to many in the Mon-Valley with the addition of graduate student Steve Swiech. A former al l -state forward at E l i z a b e t h - F o r w a r d , Swiech has two years of eligibility remaining after starting his college career at Akron. “Steve has played at the Division I level a n d w a s o n s o m e
successful teams,” said Brown. ”Coming home should really excite him because it’s a chance to play in front of family and friends.” Another newcomer expected to contribute right away is sophomore transfer Quentin Harding. An athletic 6-5 swingman he led McKeesport to the WPIAL semifinals and was named to the Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 in 2007-08, a group which included former two-sport Jeanette standout Terrelle Pryor. “Quentin is going to make an impact because he’s so athletic and aggressive,” said Brown. “He can play both the 2 and 3 spot for us.” After lacking a true point guard last season, the Vulcans have added a pair of guards in junior transfers in Freddy Appiah (Erie Community College) and C.J. Townes (Baltimore City Community College). With Townes joining the program in December, Appiah could open the year as the starter. “We’ve added quickness in C.J. and Freddie, but both can play the point and there may be times you could see them both playing together,” said Brown. “C.J. can actually play three spots because of his strength. If there was an advantage of this team, it’s that almost everybody can play two positions and they are interchangeable.” Also vying for time in the backcourt in 2010-11 will be sophomores LaRon Byrd and Ryne Niemeic. Both players were proven scorers in high school and saw action last season as true freshmen. Niemiec was one of the most accurate long-range shooters in the PSAC last year, making 40.6 percent from beyond the arc. The frontcourt will also feature junior transfer John Williams (Baltimore City Community College) and senior Anthony Vaughn. Williams could see time at both the 3 and 4 depending on the line-up, and Vaughn is the last remaining player from the Vulcans’ 2008 PSAC Championship team. With core players returning and an influx of new talent accustomed to winning joining the program, the Vulcans look to once again reach the post-season and make more winning memor ies in Hamer Hal l before moving across the street to the Convocation Center. “It will be the best arena in Division II in our region,” said Brown. “There is not a facility that will match it, and we will be the envy of the region in terms of facility.”

In his 15 seasons as head coach, Bill Brown has continued to enhance the rich history of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program. During his time with the Vulcans, Brown has amassed a record of 289-121 to become the winningest coach in program history. He has guided Cal U to eight 20-win seasons with the Vulcans qualifying for the PSAC Tournament in 10 out of 14 seasons and advancing to the ‘State Game’ four times, winning it twice (1999, 2008). The 2007-08 campaign offered Brown and his staff one of the more challenging tasks of his Cal U tenure. Featuring four new starters, the Vulcans registered a 28-6 overall record, won their first PSAC Championship since 1999 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 1996. The 28 wins are also the second-most in school history. Brown has been named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in two of the last four seasons and five times during his 14-year tenure. Prior to his time at Cal U, Brown served as head coach at Division III Kenyon College for eight seasons. Under his direction, the Lords qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament in back-to-back seasons after posting 20-plus wins in 1993-94 and 1994-95. In 1993-94, Kenyon won its conference championship tournament and earned the top seed in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year with a 24-4 record. Brown started his head-coaching career at Sacramento State University
and coached the Hornets for two seasons during the program’s transition to NCAA Division I. He followed his time at Sacramento State with a season as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee under Don DeVoe. A native of Ohio, Brown started his coaching career at Ohio University after a successful playing career for the Bobcats. When people think of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program, instantaneously they think of its rich tradition and heritage. Dating back to the inception of the program, sometime around the turn of the 20th century, the men’s basketball program has continuously produced quality young men both on and off the court. During the early years of the program, the game was played much differently than it is today and usually at a slower pace. Points did not come as easy and victories were difficult to attain. However, during the 1923-1924 season, Cal U dealt rival Slippery Rock its only loss of the season with a 25-24 victory. Around 1935, things started to take shape into the direction of the modern-day game. Rivalries started to form in the Mythical State Teachers Conference against Clarion, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Slippery Rock, and Edinboro. These early games set the foundation for the heated and lively contests that are now witnessed every year. In 1950, the Mythical State Teachers Conference evolved into the Mythical West Penn Little 10 Conference by adding Lock Haven along with four other colleges. Then just one year later in 1951, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) was founded and now features a staggering 16 teams. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the sport itself began to advance. More emphasis was being put on athletics in general and the tempo of the game began to get quicker, which resulted in higher-scoring affairs. Duke O’Hara became the first Vulcan to eclipse the 1,000 point total. O’Hara finished his career (1948-1952) at Cal U with 1,116 points and was the first of 32 Vulcans to reach the 1,000-point milestone. During the same time period, Cal U saw many other great players wear the Red and Black, such as Hall of Famers: Lloyd Gilmore, Walt Sigut, Roy Maines and Sebastion “Sibby” Lonigro. Three years after O’Hara became the first Cal U player to score over 1,000 points in a career and set the school’s scoring record, Dick Majernick eclipsed that mark by tallying 1,317 points. Today, Majernick stays actively involved with the men’s basketball program serving a vital role within the 6th-Man Club. Just four years after Majernick set the scoring record, Roger Hotz netted 1,750 points to claim the top spot on the scoring list. His record stood for almost two decades until Delmer Beshore surpassed that mark in the 1978 season with 1,869 points. Beshore held this record until the current all-time scoring leader Joe Miller scored 1,924 point over his four-year career that ended in the 1989 season. Since Miller set the high mark, Cal U has had 13 young men reach the 1,000 point club. Derrick Scott is the most recent Vulcan to have challenged for the record as he totaled 1,661 points from 1993-97.
The reason behind the rich history of the men’s basketball program largely relates to the team success Cal U has experienced throughout its heritage. During the years (1962-1978) that Miles Witchey led the Vulcans, he coached numerous Hall of Famers that include Delmar Beshore, Bernie Floriani (1970 PSAC Player of the Year), Scott Mountz, former NBA player Ray Green, who still holds the record for most points in a single game with 51, Pat Hobart, Cleveland Stewart and Bernie Floriani. Witchey finished his 16-year tenure with a 182-173 record. After Witchey, the Vulcans were guided by Ed McCluskey (1978-80) and Tim Loomis (1981-86). During this time, the program continued to make strides and produce quality student-athletes. Hall of Famer, Michael Wilson (1981-85) remains as the fourth all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,732 points. In the 1986-87 season, the Vulcan program took under new
leadership when Jim Boone took control of the program. Boone led the Vulcans to the programs first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in the 1991-1992 season that finished with a final record of 31-2. Boone led the likes of Kenny Toomer, who holds the record for points in a single season with 842 and earned PSAC Player of the
Year in 1992, Ray Gutierrez with most three-pointers in a season with 143 and Player of the Year in 1993, Derrick Scott and Robert Jones who are both top five in rebounding and in the 1,000-point club, Hall of Famer Chad Scott, and Brent Kincaid, who was one of the most accurate shooters in school history. And currently to the school’s all-time winningest coach Bill Brown, who has a career record of 289-121 with two PSAC titles and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 2008 season. Brown has guided some of the most talented Vulcans in school history, including Ishmieal Kamara and Michael Johnson who earned PSAC Player of the Year awards after the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and Seth Martin the school’s 10th all-time leading scorer, This year mark the end of an era when the men’s and women’s basketball teams close out the 2010-11 season in Hamer Hall, as they will have a new home venue for the upcoming years. Many victories were won and memories made in Hamer Hall, but the Vulcan basketball programs will have a new home in the 6,000-seat Convocation Center. This new building will be a state-of-the-art facility that will feature premier amenities. The Cal U athletic department is inviting all member of the Cal U basketball family for the last game in Hamer Hall on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
*Please contact the Sports Information Office with any stories or facts as we are constantly trying to update and preserve the history of the men’s basketball program.

PSAC
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has
nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.
Learn more at www.diicommunity.org
NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affi rm that athletics events should refl ect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, family-friendly events a standard of the Division II experience.
