Shoppers walk in front of a tour bus with an Express clothing store ad on the side Friday in Chicago. Nationwide, early signs pointed to a solid turnout for the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. In an encouraging sign for retailers and for the economy, more shoppers appeared to be buying for themselves than last year, when such indulgences were limited.

A consuming frenzy

JULIAN GOMEZ/The Daily Utah Chronicle

Black Friday shoppers at Kohl’s in Centerville waited at least an hour and a half in checkout lines that began at the front of the store, wrapped around to the back, then circled back to the front. Kohl’s opened at 3 a.m., the earliest in the store’s history.

R. Stoutamireposted 11.24.2010 @ 10.23 AM“I think this close to a major holiday (Thanksgiving), and since most of the roads down-town, and most of the rest of the valley are snowpacked, the University should have been shut down on Wednesday also! I don’t think it was prudent to expect people to travel far to the U of U in these conditions. I think the U of U will also get to pay for a lot of slip and fall accidents on it’s campus as well. I noticed that only the roads near the U of U have been cleared, the rest of the valley is really slick! Additionally, I noticed the U of U groundscrew did their typical slacker job of not cleaning off the sidewalks as usual. The U of U should have closed the University on Wednesday, but the administration usually doesn’t take UTA to work, but usually drive their expensive SUV’s to work instead. Also, the well paid adminis-tration usually lives much closer to the University than most of the staff and students do.”

Anonymousposted 11.26.2010 @ 4.52 PM“Who says there weren’t any witnesses?”

Anonymousposted 11.22.2010 @ 8:42 PM“What really matters here is that there was somebody beaten and had to end up in the hos-pital. If you all want to know the story... Ryan was taken to the hospital in the early morning hours of Friday after the assault, he suffered a broken ankle, shoulder, a concussion, and multiple stitches were received. The Archuleta family then flew back home to Utah and Ryan was seen here in SLC. He has since gone through surgery. They were not there to fight. They were there to have a family vacation that was ruined by punks harassing and jumping two people there to just have a good time. Why is it that everyone has to jump to conclu-sions? It’s sad that you cannot go and support your team without having to come home with multiple injuries. You are sick to think that there was anything else happening. What would you do if this was your child, your brother and sister, or cousin? Would you be posting crap like you did above? Think again before you open your mouth with such a small mind!!”
