to discover the knowledge and intelligence of the people in that era.

F E T E D A YIt was fairly crowded during the Fete on Saturday 20 October, despite the unpredictable weather. The good thing about Fete is that it brings the community together, Alhamdullillah. During this year’s Fete, there were more community stalls selling items like clothes, hijabs, arts and crafts, etc. I thank all for being part of this event which is the biggest and most popular in our calendar. Our organizing team had worked very hard in preparing and running the show – my appreciation and thanks to all staff for their support and making it a great success once again.

A N N U A L Q U R A N C O M P E T I T I O NThe Annual Quran Competition was held on 24 and 25 October, Alhamdullillah. I am proud of the enthusiastic students who competed in the categories of memorisation, hfiz, adhan and khutbah. There was the Choir, Poems, Qira’at of the Quran and an Islamic Quiz for parents which highlighted the program. I am happy to note that the competition progresses year to year. My congratulations to both the Islamic Departments and a special thanks to all who contributed tirelessly towards this event. MashaAllah, I am intrigued with the Khutbah’s participants and could see them emerging as future Imams or Khatibs. May Allah (swt) reward the coaches for their passion and patience in guiding the categories of the competition. As I said in my speech, I would encourage the readers to understand the

meaning of verses of the Holy Quran and the only way is to learn Arabic.

N E W M U L T I P U R P O S E S P O R T S C O M P L E XAlhamdullillah, we have obtained the permit for building the new multipurpose sports complex and thank you to the Wyndham City Council for the approval. InshaAllah, we will commence the project very soon. This indoor sports facility with area of 6790sqm would adequately accommodate sport courts, gymnasium, stage, auditorium as well as kitchen/diner. The progress of the project will be updated in coming newsletters inshaAllah.

Dear Parents, Students & FriendsA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M

C A R P A R K The Administration carpark is closed each school day between 9.00am and 3.15pm, to allow our senior students more space during recess and lunch. Guests are still able to access the administration building during the day by parking in front of the mosque and walking through the mosque gates.

S P E E D I N GOver the course of the year, we have found many parents speeding in the car parks. As you can imagine this is extremely dangerous especially when smaller children pop out between cars. Please follow the actions of our staff on duty and keep in line with the speed on the school grounds at all times.

S P A R E C L O T H I N GWe have many younger students presenting to the front office due to bathroom accidents. For parents with children in Foundation and Year 1, can you please provide an extra pair of pants, underwear and socks in their school bags.

L A T E A R R I V A L S A N D E A R L Y D I S M I S S A L S We are still experiencing many students arriving late each day. School commences at 8.50am and all students are expected to arrive ontime. If you are finding heavy traffic in the mornings, try the new carpark and if you can leave 10 minutes earlier each day, this will ensure an early arrival.

If your child is required to be collected early due to an appointment, please advise the Administration Office so they can have your child waiting for you in the foyer. Students who fall ill during the day will be contacted by the Nursing staff for collection from the First Aid Department.

S T U D E N T A P P O I N T M E N T STo avoid disruption to your child’s learning it is requested that medical or other appointments for your children are made outside of school hours.

S T U D E N T L U N C H E S We are being inundated with parents arriving at the front office thorughout the entire day with their child’s lunch. Please ensure that your child has a healthy packed lunch in their school bag before they leave home in the morning. This creates a lot of wasted time for our staff.

V I S I T O R SAny parent, guardian or visitor must report to the Administration Office and sign in prior to entering the College grounds. This is necessary especially in the event of an emergency and also for the safety of all our staff and students.

If you are interested to learn more or do some of the activities with your children you can visit their website at http://schools.stjohn.org.au/

Finally, just a gentle reminder, if your child suffers from hay fever, it is recommended that they have their dose of antihistamine (Zrytec/Telfast/Claratyne) before school. This will cover them during the school hours. As I have mentioned in our last newsletter, the spring and summer months should be great fun for our students, with lots of opportunities for outdoor learning and play. But children with hay fever can find this time of year difficult; their symptoms can make them uncomfortable and even affect their academic achievement. Your cooperation, understanding and support with this initiative is very much appreciated.

Assalamualikum, October has been an eventful month. For the first time this year, our Foundation students started a 2-week Swimming Program. These are amazing life skills that increase swimming and water safety skills of our children to prevent drowning and increased participation in safe aquatic activity.

At the start of term 4, we had St John Ambulance Victoria organise a First Aid program for our Grade 1 to Grade 6

students. The Program was designed to educate children on how to assist in emergencies, whether at home or school. This was a free program that allowed our students to learn basic first aid skills. It was fun, engaging and age appropriate for our students. The feedback we received from the students was very positive and, inshaAllah, next year, we will run this Program again.

There are St John First Aid online resources and activities.

The Primary Islamic Department would like to welcome you all to the final term of the year! We have a lot in store for our students in Term 4 and look forward to sharing with you all what we have been up to!

Our Quran Competition was highly successful as we had 186 students learn the required verses of Surat Yunus and received their certificates and prizes! Year after year our students prove that they are eager and excited as ever to learn verses from the Quran by listening to the morning Dua/Quran recitation, attending the morning Quran classes and even practise at home. The Surah for Term 4 is Surat Al Mulk which will be played daily every morning inshaAllah. This semester our lovely Grade 2 female students have been practising the wearing of the Hijab every Friday mashaAllah. Our students have shown a lot of enthusiasm as they prepare themselves for wearing the Hijab as part of their Grade 3 uniform. Classes have been awarded golden stars for remembering to wear the Hijabs as well.

As our young students develop and blossom into young men and woman, it is necessary as an Islamic School that we address some of the many issues faced by adolescents every day. In week 2 our Grade 6 students took part in Take Control sessions taught by our Islamic teachers that were aimed at making our students aware of the change in hormones in both genders, peer pressure and emotions. We also discussed what is appropriate when in the presence or communicating with the opposite gender. Gender separate sessions were taught from an Islamic

Perspective along with evidence from the Quran and Sunnah.

The 16th Annual Quran Competition was held on 24 October. A touching speech by our Principal , Mr Omar Hallak was followed by performances presented to us by our school choir students. Students competed in the following Quran memorisation categories: 1/4 Juzu, 1/2 Juzu, 1 Juzu, 2 Juzu, 3 Juzu and Hifz Program. Other categories on the night included Quran recitation, Khutba presentation and Adhan recitation. A huge congratulations to all our participants who were awarded with prizes and certificates for their efforts on this successful night.

We would like to thank all of our dedicated staff who trained our students throughout the year and to our students who showed persistence and determination to compete in their categories. May Allah reward our teachers and parents for supporting and guiding our dear children through this valuable journey.

Throughout term 3 (every Thursday), the year 10 VCAL students were involved in a program called ‘AniMATES.’ It is a youth led social marketing campaign that promotes social cohesion by addressing race, and religious-based discrimination and hate. The students created an engaging animated video aimed at conveying a strong message to the wider population, and it was to emphasise Contributing to Australia.

The program had three phases, the first being the capacity building phase, based on leadership training and creating group cohesion. The second is the campaign development which allows the group to explore issues that are important to them. The final phase is the production of the video where students develop their concepts further by creating scripts and story boards, revising their animations and adding colour, music, and voiceovers.

The first phase involved leaders from different religious communities visiting to discuss and answer questions about their religions. They gave an insight to our students of what their beliefs really are, and clarified misconceptions that people can make. There were also many activities that allowed students to participate in activities with Wyndham City Education Centre (WCEC), which really uplifted the Social Cohesion between the two schools.

We also visited Victoria University, and “Vicky” the truck. It was a great experience that shows how culturally and religiously diverse Victorians are, and how awesome it is to be Victorian. It was targeting the second phases’

“campaign development phase,” as it was an attempt to give students ideas of what to explore in their own campaign, and give them ideas for their animation.

The final phase involved the production phase, the students created an engaging animated video aimed at conveying a strong message to the wider population, and it was to emphasise “Contributing to Australia.” It gave our students an opportunity to create an influential and positive message to the wider population. It began with a major discussion that really engaged all students, as we were searching for ideas for the animation. We could only decide on making one come to fruition (out of 7 ideas), and once it was decided, we created a story board. From there, the LOTE marketing team took over and made our idea come to life. The animation that they created will be shown in the Wyndham public areas such as Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre, in cinemas, and potentially, it could be seen on TV, so STAY TUNED!

The VCAL year 10 class have accomplished an outstanding achievement for both themselves and our school/community. They came prepared every week, and represented Al-Taqwa with the best behaviour. They really did work cohesively with students from WCEC and with their own classmates, and discovered many things about themselves during this project.

An example being, when Heyam Abbas was asked to make a speech with Adam Bou’khalil. Adam was calm and cool like a cucumber on stage, but Heyam was really nervous. She managed to pull herself together, get up on the stage, speak, and walked off with a massive smile. It really melts the heart to see the happiness of our students when they succeed and do a great job. Another highlight was Issra Melhams’ enthusiasm with discovering ideas for the animation. We chose one of her many ideas in the end and it was obvious on how proud of her hard work she was. She took ownership of her work and the class agreed on having her voice at the end of the video.

Finally, I believe that ‘AniMATES’ empowered our students to create a positive and constructive message that will strengthen relationships between Muslim and non-Muslim young people.

On behalf of Al Taqwa would like to thank everyone for ‘The Huddle’, including John King, Daniel Sammut and Mylene Wheeler who have contributed greatly in getting this initiative off the ground and inviting us to be a part of it. A huge thank you to Stefanos Chrisoulis, Yarra Bakri and Heba Hallak for bringing this program to our school and giving me the opportunity to coordinate it.

The Year 12 students completed formal classes in October, and were involved in a number of College organised activities aimed at celebrating the conclusion of their secondary education.

Over the course of this year the College has provided students with the support, encouragement and opportunity to achieve the best results possible. Creating such an environment can only be achieved by the hard work and dedication of many teachers and support staff. The Year 12 VCE and VCAL Programs have been well managed by the

respective Level Coordinators, Yarra Bakri and Stefanos Chrisoulis. On behalf of the College community and Year 12 students I wish to thank staff for their tireless work.

Finally we wish all Year 12 students the very best of wishes in their final examinations, and we look forward to celebrating their success at the VCE Graduation on Wednesday 21 November.
