Welcome

Welcome to the Concert Season 2009–10 at Royal Holloway. You will recognise the shape of things from previous years, but some programmes merit special mention. One of the triumphs of last season was our new music ensemble, Royal Holloway Sinfonietta. If you attended the Sinfonietta concerts you will have been struck by the professionalism and commitment of this student group. This season you can hear them in exciting compositions by Mark-Anthony Turnage and Louis Andriessen, both of whom have key birthdays in 2009–10 (50 and 70 respectively), and in works by student composers.

The Chapel is an important venue for music-making at the College. The Chapel Choir has a major international reputation, not least through its recordings with Hyperion, and a new Hyperion CD will be launched at this season’s St Cecilia Concert. A new feature this year will be the free Wednesday lunchtime concerts hosted by the Chapel throughout the year.

The Royal Holloway Symphony Orchestra concerts feature major, and much-loved, string concertos: Sibelius Violin Concerto, Schumann Cello Concerto and Elgar Cello Concerto (the latter concert in St John’s, Smith Square). There will also be a combined concert with the Royal Holloway Chorus in Windsor Parish Church, with the main work Berlioz’s Te Deum.

All these are ‘home-grown’ events, and so too are concerts by the Chamber Orchestra, the Early Music Group, the Andean Band, and the Gamelan. Professional visitors include CHROMA Ensemble (performing George Crumb and Toru Takemitsu), the London Mozart Players, new music from Poland and – a real novelty – the silent movie Phantom of the Opera, with organ improvisation by David Briggs.

There is much to enjoy here, and we look forward to seeing you.

Jim SamsonHead of the Department of Music
