 Toplum Gönüllüleri (Community Volunteers) network has increased to 90 TOG youth organizations in either at university campuses or outside the universities in 57 cities of Turkey. These youth organizations have voluntarily carried out projects in their local environment. The number of volunteers has risen to 22,699. Young Community Volunteers implemented 727 local, national or international projects that reached out to 287,152 people. Total of voluntary hours spared for these activities totaled to 1,156,699 hours. The total value added to GNP by minimum wage per hour has been 1,805,301 $. Istanbul Pink House, Samsun Pinhole and Samsun 19 Mayis are 3  Youth Centers where young people can meet, create ideas and share their skills and knowledge and learn. In the three Youth Centers a variety of projects, activities and trainings continued to take place for or with young people aged between 15 and 29. Also in Ankara, Diyarbakir and Izmir Coordination Centers run for the coordination of TOG youth organizations. In TOG’s youth centers, the  Young Space project has been run in partnership with Sabanci Foundation, which includes activities on youth information, discrimination and advocacy. TOG wants to develop a better model for youth centers and share it with the public and civil society organizations. Young Community Volunteers from TOG’s local organizations gather twice a year in TOG  Youth Council . This gathering is a meeting point for representatives from TOG youth organizations. They share their experiences and ideas of their projects and shape the future of TOG. Also, every year they vote and elect their representatives to take place in the Board of Directors of TOG. The 14 th TOG Youth Council took place in Canakkale hosted by Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in March 2009 and 15 th TOG Youth Council took place in Samsun hosted by Ondokuz Mayis University in October 2009.   Youth Participation was TOG’s theme for the year 2009. Various projects, seminars, youth councils, researches, monitoring project and street activities were held in underlining the theme. • For increasing the capacity of project development and implementation of young communityvolunteers 24 Local Needs Analysis Meetings, 2 Coordination Meetings, and 4 NationalWorkshops were held in a number of cities.

• TOG has projects called TOG ATAK, in which young people from several local TOGorganizations meet for creating awareness on social issues. In these projects, young peoplefrom different cities and regions gather to perform a project for 2-3 days. In 2009 TOGimplemented 11 TOG ATAK and 24 local TOG ATAK projects on different issues such ascoastal cleaning, school renovations, global warming, cultural heritage, human rights andworkshops in volunteerism and civil society. 6 TOG ATAK projects were realized with thepartnership of Mavi Jeans.

• In summer, young people from different backgrounds met in different locations (Istanbul,Mersin, Siirt, Hatay, Karabuk, Mardin, Diyarbakır and Balıkesir) and realized 8 Summer Projects. These projects were on the promotion of local culture, educational support for children, ecology, youth filmmaking etc.

• In 2009, Mentorship Project has continued its activities with 61 mentors and 125 mentees.

Besides providing guidance to youngsters by matching them one-to-one with adult volunteers,the project also organized events which helped to increase the interaction among them.

• TOG continues to give scholarships to 591 university students all around Turkey.

• In 2009 by organizing 5 training of trainers, 100 Community Volunteers began to give trainingson the field. Also with 504 trainings, in which 1,134 trainers and 10,473 young participantswere involved, 97,336 volunteer hours were generated in 3,777 training hours.

• A youth photo-contest on Youth Participation for Development was organized parallel to theAnnual Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund taking place in Istanbulin October 2009. The contest was held in partnership with the World Bank and it aimed at

drawing the attention of Turkish young people and youth organizations to the issue of development and to share their points of view on the matter with high level officials. 115photos were submitted by 51 young photographers from 25 provinces. The three best worksreceived awards; 30 best photos selected by the jury started their journey in different towns of Turkey as an itinerant exhibition.

• In the frame of The Idea of My Life - Entrepreneurship Project for Youth run in partnershipwith Avea and aiming at supporting young entrepreneurs with trainings and consultancy inimplementing their business ideas, 76 business ideas were developed into business plans byyoung entrepreneurs in 2009. 30 of these business plans were presented to theEntrepreneurship Board in November 2009 and 15 of them, prepared by 28 young

entrepreneurs, were found successful and were awarded with loans totaling 620.000 TL(411,769 $) from the Fund for Youth Entrepreneurship. As of early 2010, all youngentrepreneurs are in the process of establishing their businesses.

• The Living Library was implemented twice in 2009, in Civil Voices Festival in September andin 28th Istanbul TUYAP International Book Fair in November, with the partnership of IstanbulBilgi University Youth Studies Unit and with the financial support of Istanbul 2010 EuropeanCapital of Culture Agency. The Library received its guests during four days in total. The bookswere borrowed 521 times and 693 readers benefited from the Library.

• Two local projects that were developed by young Community Volunteers in 2009 receivedfinancial support from two different grant programs. Culture Hunters, implemented in Kocaeli

and aiming to raise awareness among the local youth on the cultural heritage of this province,was supported by the S-UN Fund established jointly by the Swiss Development andCooperation Agency, the United Nations Development Program and the Youth ServicesDepartment. The Marketplace project, developed by Istanbul Technical University CommunityVolunteers and aiming to empower women by getting them in touch with various women’sNGOs in neighborhood marketplaces, continues with the support of World Bank Civil SocietyFund Program.

• The White Caps project; aiming to raise awareness among primary school pupils aboutsocietal peace and to promote the development relationships based on respect, trust,tolerance and cooperation among them, started with the support of Janssen-Cilag inDecember 2009.

• The Solar Generation project developed by local Community Volunteer groups andGreenpeace received financial support from the Global Environment Facility Small GrantsProgram in late 2009. The project will be implemented in 2010.

• The Think Purple! Project which is being implemented with Youth Studies Unit had beenrewarded with a financial support at the “Development Marketplace 2009 Competition”. Withinthe Project activities, Anadolu, Erciyes, Gazi, Ege, Yıldız, Kocaeli, Dokuz Eylül, Tokat,Samsun, Biga, Pamukkale TOG groups started to monitor the gender equality at their localTOG groups and also the foundation as well.

• By the Magnifier to the Address project which was implemented with the partnership of Youth Studies Unit, the local civil monitoring groups were formed in Istanbul, Samsun, Kocaeli,Izmir and Konya monitored the availability, accessibility, quality and efficiency of youth

services that must be provided for young people at the locals. In 2009, the local groupsmonitored the services of youth centers of municipalities, European Union Offices of theuniversities/governorships, presidency of health, culture and sport at universities, youthassemblies of city councils and dormitories. It is planning to prepare a report with the datafrom local monitoring visits and the report will be shared with the related public bodies, NGOsand universities. The project will be implemented in 15 locals in 2010 by the received financialsupport from National Endowment for Democracy and Delegation of the EuropeanCommission to Turkey.

•  TOG Assessment Study had been continued to realize the complementary impact of theTOG at nation-wide. In 2009, the focus groups were actualized; the measurement tools weredeveloped and disseminated for participation.

• The research on The Needs of University Students was published by TOG. 1886 youngpeople participated to the research from 43 cities and 59 universities. The aim of the researchis to contribute to the development of a more efficient, high quality and student centeredapproach in university life. The research defines the basic needs of university students under 12 main titles and proposes solutions through those needs. The research was shared with therelated public bodies, NGOs and universities.

• TOG participated to The Strategic Paper on Social and Personal Development of Youth advisory group meetings organized by the State Ministry responsible for Youth which aims thedevelopment of a new youth structure in Turkey.

• TOG has been selected to become a member of the Advisory Council on Youth of theCouncil of Europe for the period 2009-2011. Taking co-management on the youth field asthe principal the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe consists 30 differentyouth civil society organizations.

• 49 young people participated to the international training projects, 42 young peopleparticipated to the international youth exchange projects. TOG as the sending, hosting andcoordinating organization for  European Voluntary Service (EVS) continued to send youngpeople through EVS. In 2009, 17 young community volunteers have been selected for doingshort term and long term “European Voluntary Service” in the NGOs of Germany, Holland,Italy, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Luxembourg. Young Community Volunteers participated

the international trainings in Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, England, France, Holland, Italy,Ivory Coast, Poland, Slovakia and Spain. 42 young community volunteers participated theinternational exchange projects in Germany, France, Armenia, Italy and Spain.

• Toplum Gönüllüleri Vakf ı takes place in the founding process of   Youth Culture in Action network and becomes an observer member of “Youth for Exchange and Understanding” youthnetwork.

• Young people from Azerbaijan, Canada, Czech Republic, Georgia, Macedonia and USAparticipated to the summer projects that were implemented by young community volunteers.

• TOG realized a joint project titled Bridge of Benevolence with an NGO - Future is Yours-from Armenia for developing the mutual understanding and dialogue amongst young people inthe two countries. 14 young people from Turkey and 16 young people from Armeniaparticipated to the two exchange projects in Istanbul and Yerevan.

• A TOG Student Club is established in the International Cyprus University. 9 young peoplehave come to do “European Volunteer Service” (EVS) in TOG from Germany, Italy, Lithuania,Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Spain. Two young people from Yale University interned inthe International Relations Department from the middle of June till the end of July. One youngcame from Leipzig University to intern in Ankara Coordination Center from Germany.

• In June 2009, Community Volunteers organized the Heartfelt Memory Night and raised750.000 $ for the Community Volunteers’ projects. The night was organized with the financialsupport of Kadir Has Foundation as a fundraising event in Yenikoy Sait Halim Pasa Watersidewith the participation of 450 guests. The celebrities Demet Akbag, Gulben Ergen and MehmetAli Birand participated in the event and offered a special memory to the guests who made adonation. During the night, the local and national projects developed and implemented byyoung volunteer university students, TOG ATAK Projects, Summer Projects, InternationalStudies, Youth Researches, Youth Councils, TOG Youth Peer Trainings and Scholarshipshave been supported by donations.

• The artists and designers Ayse Birsel, Bahar Korcan, Behic Ak, Ela Cindoruk, Gunnur Ozsoyve Piyale Madra created a special series for gift and congratulatory cards of Community

Volunteers as part of the project What I Feel to support Community Volunteers’ work. Withinthe context of the project, special designed gift and congratulatory cards has been developedto offer individuals and corporations a disjunctive possibility for gift giving in special days suchas new-year, birthday, anniversary etc. The project has been developed by Parallel DesignCommunication and Publishing. The art director of the project was the artist and graphicdesigner Yilmaz Aysan. The presentation of the project took place with an organization hostedby Jeffi Medina and Medina Turgul DDB in Kasimpasa Tuzambari together with theparticipation of the artists who are supporting the project. The donations, coming by selling of these cards are supporting the social responsibility projects of young Community Volunteers.

•    Youth in Social Service Campaign, started in 2005, has been supported by regular 

contributions of 28 corporations in order to increase funding for the social responsibilityprojects of Community Volunteers in 2009.

•  975 news about Community Volunteers and its projects have been published andbroadcasted. 666 of them have been published in print media, 30 of them have beenbroadcasted in media and 279 of them have been published in e-media. The activities of Community Volunteers have been presented to public throughout various TV and RadioPrograms.
