Athletic AdministrAtion

Now in her 18th year at Taylor, former Trojan head women’s volleyball coach Dr. Angie Fincannon enters her second year directing Taylor’s intercollegiate athletic depart-ment as the dean of human performance and athletics. “As dean for human performance and athletics, I’m confident that Dr. Fincannon’s leadership will advance and strengthen Taylor’s athletic program,” said Dr. Ste-phen Bedi, Taylor’s provost. “She is recognized and re-spected by her peers as a colleague and winning coach who took the women’s volleyball program to a national level of prominence.” Administrative duties for Fincannon include over-seeing the entire operation of the Trojans’ 15-sport in-tercollegiate athletic department. She is responsible for the budgeting, personnel evaluations, facilities manage-ment, representing the department at various organiza-

tional meetings, and the overall leadership of the depart-ment. A holder of three degrees from Ball State Uni-versity, including a master’s (‘90) and doctorate (‘04) in educational administration, Fincannon has led the PHP department for the past four years and also served as the associate dean for special projects in Taylor’s office of aca-demic affairs for the past two years. As PHP department chair, Fincannon oversees an academic department of 15 full-time professors and seven adjunct professors, which serves over 150 students in three distinct majors. Fincannon also served as Taylor’s Director of Summer School programs from 2005-2008. Fincannon began her time at Taylor in 1992 when she was hired as Taylor’s head volleyball coach and as an assistant professor of PHP. That was the beginning of a very successful 13-year coaching career for the 2006 Tay-lor University Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. During that span, Fincannon amassed a career record of 496-131 for a .791 winning percentage. Her teams won seven Mid-Central Conference championships and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament four times (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001). The Dream Team of 1997 finished the season with a school record 48-3 mark and advanced to the Elite 8 of the national tournament. Fincannon was named MCC Coach of the Year five times, coached 10 All-Americans, and led her teams on three mission trips.

Amy Stucky is serving Taylor Athletics for her 15th year. A 1992 Taylor graduate with a major in biology and a specialization in athletic training, she received her Mas-ter’s Degree from Ball State University in Higher Educa-tion Administration in 1998. Stucky worked for Fox Valley Orthopedics in Elgin, Ill., as an athletic trainer for two years before returning to her alma mater. While assisting in the administration of women’s athletics, Stucky has played a major role in progressively improving the Taylor athletic department. Stucky also serves as an assistant professor in the school’s physical education and human performance de-partment. She begins her second year of service on the university assessment council. Second Year Head Coach25th Year at Taylor

RonKorfmacher

Entering his 25th season on the Taylor football sidelines, Ron Korfmacher returns for his second year as head coach of the Trojans. After seeing his first graduating class of 12 seniors through to completion, Korfmacher has turned his attention to the 2009 football season and a new chapter in Taylor football history.

“My expectation is that we continue to establish a win-ning work ethic and attitude throughout our entire team and program so that we—Taylor football—will become a team that is characterized by effort and execution on the field and by excellence and service off the field.”

One of the primary objectives for Korfmacher and his coaching staff is to elevate the level of play on the field and in the classroom for each athlete that wears the Tro-jan gold. “Among my desired outcomes for Taylor foot-ball is that each enrolled football player graduate from Taylor and contribute on a team that competes and contends for a league title during his collegiate football career.”

Korfmacher’s ability to clearly communicate his ideas and faith serve as valuable tools as he leads the Taylor football program into a new era.

After spending four years as a quarterback for the Tro-jans during his playing days from 1978-1981, Korfmach-er earned a degree in business administration from Taylor in 1982. He then returned to Upland in 1984 as an assistant coach for the next 23 seasons. During that time he served stints as offensive coordinator, as well as coaching quarterbacks, running backs, and the defen-sive backfield.

From 1985-2005, Korfmacher served as Taylor’s recruit-ing coordinator, a role in which he was responsible for the program’s nationwide recruiting efforts. Before tak-ing over as head coach in 2008, Korfmacher coordinated athletic recruiting for all 15 of Taylor’s intercollegiate ath-letic programs.

Beyond the measurable successes each player strives for during their team in the Taylor football program, Korfmacher wants players to leave Upland prepared to serve. “We want to produce men who in their adult lives are rooted and established in Christ and are equipped and prepared to lead lives of excellence and service in every endeavor they undertake.”

“We want to attract more men to this team, to this op-portunity and thereafter produce more Taylor football graduates who will bear an eternal impact in their vo-cations and professional lives, in their communities, churches, and homes.”

In 1990, Korfmacher earned a Master’s in Executive De-velopment for Public Service from Ball State University.

Korfmacher and his wife, Julie, live in Upland. They are the parents of three children—Sara (TU ’09), Ben (19), and Rachel (16).

Both the offensive and defensive lines return key players for the most battle-tested units on the team.

The Offense

With eight offensive starters returning, including three on the offensive line, this unit will play a large role in determining the success of the Taylor offense this season. Starting quarterback Shaun Addison returns for his junior year with a talented and experienced group of wide receivers as targets. However, the offense did take a hit when it was announced last spring that Josh Cook, First Team All-MSFA pick and the team’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 1998, would not return for the 2009 season. Working the trenches will be a trio of returning starters in senior Ross Hayden and juniors Marc Cattrell and Jacob Cooper, along with seasoned veterans Andrew Heffner (Sr.), Jeremy Nelson (Sr.), and Jacob Wasiniak (Sr.). A talented group of underclassmen are also prepared to step in to add depth to this unit. At the quarterback spot, Addison returns for his junior season after starting all ten games a year ago. Competing for time as the backup signal caller will be Jordan Coffey and Nick Freeman, a pair of highly skilled recruits. This trio combines to give Taylor the most depth at the quarterback position in several years. The most inexperienced posi-tion on the offensive unit heading into the season is the running back spot. With no returning tailbacks, the Trojans will look to a running back-by-committee approach early in the year. Korfmacher expects that one or two will emerge from training camp as the go-to back from a group of five newcomers—Cory Anderson, Kyle Anderson, Sebastian Maybir,

The 2009 edition of the Taylor University football team will have a vastly different look compared to the team that second-year head coach Ron Korfmacher fielded a year ago. With 30 newcomers added to the roster this offseason, the Trojans will attempt to find the right mix of veteran leadership and young talent to maximize the team’s success this season.

Despite the departure of nine starters from last year’s team that fin-ished the season with a 2-8 record, the Trojans figure to be a deeper team this season with ten additional players and a full offseason of train-ing and development in the Taylor system. With each assistant coach returning to the staff this season, and the addition of two more assis-tants in 2009, the program is on level footing and poised to improve on a stepping stone season from a year ago. Setting the tone for the Trojans will be the groups in the trenches.

Travis Spitnale, and Tyler Wood. On the opposite end of the expe-rience spectrum is a unit of wide receivers that proved its mettle last season under offensive coordinator Greg Wolfe. Led by junior Ryan

Magnuson, who had 37 catches for 508 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2008, the receiving corps also returns junior Trent Schmale and senior Trevor Terrell to round out last season’s top three pass receiv-ers. A bumper crop of new talent from the 2009 recruiting class makes this unit one of the strongest on the team. Topping the depth chart at the tight end position is sophomore Travis Tomaszewski, along with Matt Orvis, a transfer from the Air Force Academy. With limited depth at this position, both players will have ample opportunity to display their talent this season.

The Defense

The loss of six starters, includ-ing four MSFA Honorable Mention selections, has changed the face of the defensive unit, but the cupboard is not bare for defensive coordinator Pete Demorest. The performance of the front seven, led by seniors Reed Smith and Chris Wheeler, and sophomore Nahum Masimer, will be a determining factor in the success

2009 seAson previeW TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJAN FOOTBALL

13

of the 2009 Trojan defense. The defensive line will be forced to grow up quickly following the loss of several key players. Masimer will be a staple on the defensive line, with Wheeler seeing action at both tackle and defensive end. Senior Matt Burrell, junior Brandon Irvine, and sophomore transfer Nathan Boland will battle for playing time on the defensive front. Sophomore Nathaniel Causey will also be in the mix at one defensive end spot.

Hit just as hard by the depar-ture of graduating seniors, the line-backer corps will have to replace Paul Passiales and Ty Needler, who each started 31 consecutive games

over their final three seasons. The lone returning starter is senior Reed Smith, who tallied 57 tackles in 2008. Front-runners for the other two start-ing spots are Garrett Wheeler, a transfer from Malone University, and Brent Corbett, who was converted to weakside linebacker from his strong safety position in the offseason. The defensive backfield is by no means full of depth, but the unit is seasoned and loaded with talent. The MSFA leader in interceptions a year ago with six, junior Marcellus Burton is the headliner. He is joined by transfer Pagel Williams (Sr.) and returning starters Brandon Mitchell (Sr.) and Brandon Onuselogu (Jr.). Opposing quarterbacks will have their hands full with this athletic group.

Specialists

For the fourth straight year, senior Nick Davis returns to handle the kicking duties. Davis recorded his best season in 2008 when he nailed 8-15 on field goal attempts, including a 49-yarder against Olivet Nazarene. He was nearly perfect on PATs with a 16-for-17 efficiency. Davis will again handle the punting duties this year after averaging just over 35 yards per punt last season.Entering his first year on the field for the Trojans, transfer Pagel Williams is the front-runner to return punts. Taylor’s top two kick returners from a

year ago, Trent Schmale and Marcellus Burton, both return for the Trojans this season.

The Schedule

Consistent with schedules of the recent past, the Trojans will face a challenging set of opponents in one of the toughest conferences in the NAIA. Of Taylor’s six MSFA Mideast League games, three of those opponents are ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll. The season will begin at home in historic fashion, as Jim Wheeler Memorial Stadium will host its first-ever night game on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. against Anderson in the annual Wagon Wheel Game. Following the season opener, it will be one full month before the Trojans return home after visits to William Penn (Iowa) and St. Francis (Ill.) followed up by a bye week. League play opens on Parents’ Weekend against No. 17 St. Xavier at home, but the Trojans will hit the road again to Ohio for a battle with No. 25 Malone on Oct. 10. Taylor then hosts back-to-back home games against Walsh for Homecoming on Oct. 17 and Trinity International the following Saturday. Road games at Marian and Olivet Nazarene precede Taylor’s final game of the regular season at home against preseason No. 4 Saint Francis (Ind.).

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJAN FOOTBALL

troJAns in service

Twelve Taylor University football players and three coaches spent their spring break in Mobile, Alabama, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. The group volunteered considerable labor and construction skills on three houses throughout the week.

THE RED BARNLocal Youth for Christ ministry, “The Red Barn,” was assisted by TUFB at their lock-in with a fantastic obstacle course designed by the Taylor football team. Approximately 70 junior high and high school students enjoyed spending the night in the Kesler fieldhouse playing games, eating snacks, and hearing about having a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Taylor football players served as volunteer staff for the annual “Take it to the Hoop” basketball tournament sponsored by Special Olympics Indiana-Grant County and held here at Taylor University each January. About 450 Special Olympians from ages 8-80 jammed the Kesler Center for the event.

Preschoolers enjoy spend-ing time with Taylor football players while moms attend MOPS at a local church.

TROJAN PRAYER BUDDIES --Coming in Fall 2009Local boys ages 7-11 have the opportunity to be influenced for Christ through the Trojan Prayer Buddies program. Boys from the surrounding community are paired up with one or two players and meet periodically to spend time encouraging and supporting one another in school activities, athletics, hobbies, in prayer, and just having fun together. Events this fall include activities like attending a Taylor football game, a swim night, and a pregame breakfast at the dining commons.

troJAns in the neWs At the conclusion of the 2008-09 school year the Taylor University athletic department recognized Taylor football player Paul Passiales ‘09 as the Gates-Howard Male Athlete of the Year. Pas-siales was a two-sport athlete for the Trojans in foot-ball and baseball. The Gates-Howard Male Athlete of the Year award is given annually to the male athlete who has brought the most honor to Taylor through athletics. As a linebacker Passiales was named to the Mid-States Football Association Mideast All-Conference honorable mention team as a junior and as a senior. In 2008 he ranked third in the MSFA with 19.5 tackles for loss and fifth in the nation with almost two tack-les for loss per game. On the baseball diamond, the Wheaton, Ill., na-tive was a four-year starting catcher. He was a three-time unanimous all-conference selection and part of two conference championships, including the 2009 NAIA national tournament qualifying team. Passiales is also Taylor’s career and single season hits leader.

Last fall, Taylor football player Jeremy Prudhomme ’09 was named as a semifinalist by the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame for the 2008 Draddy Trophy. Prudhomme, from Hart, Michigan, was one of 164 semifinalists selected from all divisions of collegiate football for the 2008 Draddy Trophy. Only 12 NAIA players were named among the group. As a defensive end for the Trojans, Prudhomme led the MSFA in sacks as a junior and earned two straight MSFA Honorable Mention honors as well as being designated as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstand-ing football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leader-ship and citizenship.

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJAN FOOTBALL

mid-stAtes FootBAll AssocAtion

The Mid-States Football Association was formed in April 1993 when 11 insti-tutions that had competed as independents came together to form one of the largest conferences in NAIA football.

The conference is divided into Mideast and Midwest leagues, and the champions of each receive automatic berths to the NAIA playoffs.

Each member school plays the other teams in its league plus at least one crossover game with members of the other league each season.

The charter members of the MSFA were Geneva

College, Malone College, Tiffin University, Urbana University, Westminster Col-lege, the University of Find-lay, Lindenwood College, Olivet Nazarene University, Saint Xavier University, Tay-lor University and Trinity In-ternational College.

In its sixteen-year existence, the MSFA has grown into the premier NAIA football conference, having already produced three national champions and sending 18 teams to the national play-offs in the past six years. In 1994, Westminster won the national title while Findlay was co-national champion in 1995 and national champion in 1997. Most recently, Saint

Francis (Ind.) took runner-up honors in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Five MSFA schools participated in the 2007 NAIA playoffs.

The MSFA has undergone a modification for the 2009 campaign. There will be two new teams in Grand View College and Waldorf Col-lege, both from Iowa. Both schools will be part of the eight-team Midwest League. Meanwhile, three Illinois schools--Olivet Nazarene, Saint Xavier, and Trinity In-ternational--will compete as part of the eight-team Mid-east League.

Taylor University Football Families (TUFF) is a parent organization that allies with Taylor’s intercollegiate football program, staff, and team. TUFF exists to sup-port and encourage the team, staff and each other as football families. This active group connects families of players with one another through various means. They put together tailgate meals, travel notes, di-rections to hotels and restaurants for game days. They participate and assist in several annual events throughout the season: the opening training camp team and family meal, TUFF Team Post-Game Hog Roast, and Senior Recognition Weekend. Prayer is an important priority of this group, providing prayer support among its members as well as the team and staff.

After the conclusion of a Taylor University football player’s career, and as a result of participation in TUFF, parents and extended family members often remain personally connected to the TUFF organization, for-mer TUFF parents, the Taylor football program, and the University as a whole.

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJAN FOOTBALL

Taylor University’s athletic department maintains high academic and graduation goals for over 300 student ath-letes involved in its intercollegiate athletic program.

To help achieve these goals, Taylor created the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program in 1998. Student achievement and performance has continued to improve ever since. After the spring 2008 semester, the cumu-lative grade point average for all student-athletes was 3.16. There were also 56 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Dean’s List during the spring semester with a 3.60 minimum grade point average.

Ten of Taylor’s fifteen intercollegiate athletic teams were recognized by the NAIA as scholar teams for the 2007-2008 academic year. To be named a scholar team, the team’s average GPA must be 3.0 or above.

Taylor student-athletes commit countless hours to practices, competitions, and training. The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program seeks to assist student-athletes in the effort to balance those hours with their aca-demic demands. All incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes attend seminars during the fall semester that discuss topics such as time and stress management, study skills, learning styles, test taking, and campus resources. The program also offers a monitored study table, tutor possibilities, and academic advising. Upon the request of their respective coaches, returning student-athletes also become involved in the program.

Robin Lockridge enters her first year as the director of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program. She oversees all details of the program and works in conjunction with the Academic Enrichment Center to connect student-athletes with the tutoring program and the writing center. In addition, she is also the staff mentor of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council which is comprised of one student-athlete from each varsity team. Their goal is to be a voice for student-athletes and to unify Taylor athletic teams while maintaining the Taylor University vision of reflecting Christ through their words and actions. The council also seeks out service opportunities for Taylor athletic teams to become involved in the community.

Although there are many ways to be involved financially with Taylor and her students, scholarships provide a unique opportunity to honor those who have significantly influ-enced your life while directly investing in preparing today’s students to be tomorrow’s Christian leaders.

There are many ways to fund a scholarship--such as cash bonds, stocks, real estate, trust, annuities, or a bequest from a will or living trust. Taylor provides professional and confi-dential assistance in using life income and non-cash gifts to establish scholarships.
