    Welcome to Centre County, home of the PennState Nittany Lions! At the 76th annualPennsylvania School Press Association

    convention, we are getting centred as we lookat scholastic journalism today. What are the

    newest trends? How will student journalismchange over the years? As we move into a

    technologically-advanced society, we haveincluded a technology strand this year that willhelp staffs and advisers use a variety of online

    resources and tools for their publications.Sessions are scheduled on Thursday and Friday

    at the Penn Stater Conference Center.

    Information on speakers and breakout sessionscan be found in this convention program. Allof the sessions will be located in the PresidentsHall and the Senate Rooms located on the main

    oor of the Penn Stater. Exhibits,featuring universities and yearbook companies

    will be located in the lobby of the PresidentsHall. Thank you for attending the 76th annual

    Contest/Tour InformationThe writing contest will be held on Thursday, March 12thfrom 2-4 p.m. Students must have pre-registered for thissession. Tickets will be placed in the registration packet foryour school. Winners of the writing contest will be namedat the closing ceremonies on Friday afternoon.

    Carry-in contests will be held from 9 a.m. to noon onFriday, March 13th. Again, students must have

    pre-registered for this session. Winners of the carry-incontest will also be named at the closing ceremonies onFriday afternoon.

    A sightseeing tour of Penn States campus will be availableon Thursday. Bussing will be provided. Tour informationwill be available at the registration table.

    who own and use digital single lensreex cameras do so without a basicknowledge of composition and

    what pixels are and how they work.

    Knowing a few basic rules can makea world of dierence in onephotographs; photographs thatcommunicate to the reader;photographs that make people stopand say, how did he/she do that?     journalists have in Pennsylvaniaright now. We will also exploreseveral common laws that impact

    Writing Contest-Students partici-pating in this years PSPA writingcontest will get to meet reporter

    Steve Manuel. Manuel is an activephotographer with Penn StateUniversity where he photographsmany of the Division I sports teams.His photographs have beenpublished in more than 115publications,including USA Today, SportsIllustrated, The New York Times andthe Philadelphia Inquirer. After thepresentation and a brief Q & A ses-sion, students will gather to writenews, features and opinion piecesduring the second hour. Winningentries will be featured online and

    Sam Bidleman - Sam is in his31st year of teaching English,composition, graphics andjournalism at Bloomsburg HighSchool. He serves on the staof the PA Governors Institutefor Information Literacy, writesand edits for several scholasticpublications and chairs MiddleStates validation visits. Bidlemanhas been honored as a nalist inthe PA Teacher of the Year and

    as PA School Press AssociationsJournalism Teacher of the Year.

    Maggie Bauman - Maggie

    Bauman, a senior at BloomsburgHigh School, is the featureseditor of the Red & White. Lastyear, she was an award-winningnews and feature writer. Aftergraduation, she plans to attendPennsylvania College ofTechnology and major in MassMedia Communications.

    John Beale - Veteranphotojournalist John Bealeteaches photojournalism,advanced photojournalism anddocumentary photojournalism.Prior to his arrival at Penn State,he spent 21 years as staphotographer and chief

    photographer for the PittsburghPost-Gazette. A member of theU.S. Senate Press PhotographersGallery, his work has beenhonored with numerous nationalawards, including two SigmaDelta Chi Awards, theCommunity ServicePhotojournalism Award from theAmerican Society of NewspaperEditors and photo of the year by

    the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Beales photos have been widelypublished in numerousmagazines and books. In 2001 he

    served as a Journalist inResidence at Penn State. He hasalso taught photojournalism atPoint Park University inPittsburgh.

    Rick Brooks - Rick Brooks isa Magna Cum Laude graduateof Fairmont State University inFairmont WV. He has degreesin Commercial design, Graphics

    and Fine arts along withJournalism and Art education.While at Fairmont State heedited and designed the awardwinning Mound yearbook.Brooks is theNortheast Creative DesignManager with Jostens and hasworked in publishing workedsince 1986. He works with anddesigns for High schools andColleges throughout theNortheast. Numerous PIA,Columbia and NSPA awards havehonored his clients includingmultiple Bennys, Gold Crownsand Pacemakers. A member ofJEA, Columbia, CMA and thesociety of Collegiate Journalists,he actively lectures and teachesat national and state

    conventions. He possessesextensive technologybackground in Photoshop,PageMaker, InDesign, Illustrator,Painter and Oce. He receivedthe Gold Key from CSPA in2000 and the Keystone fromPSPA. Brooks also sits on theexecutive board of thePennsylvania School PressAssociation.

    CTerrence Casey- Terrence Caseyis editor-in-chief at The DailyCollegian at Penn StateUniversity. A senior majoring injournalism and religious studies,Terrence will graduate inDecember. Before being aneditor, Terrence have been a stareporter, metro editor, campuseditor and opinions page editor.

    Jesse Colaizzi - Jesse Colaizzi

    (PSU, Integrative Arts 03) holdsa Master of Arts in BroadcastJournalism from Point ParkUniversity. He is also the PointPark University StudentBroadcasting NetworkCoordinator, PhotographyFacilities Coordinator, andpart-time faculty member. Heteaches Television ProductionTechniques and Television

    Non-Linear Editing. Jesse isalso a producer of HometownHigh-Q, a high school quiz show,shown on the CBS-Pittsburghaliate KDKA-TV. Outside ofPoint Park University, he has afreelancing business, for whichhe is a eld audio specialist forThe Videohouse Inc. His eldaudio credits include multipleprograms on The HistoryChannel, ABC, CBS, The NFLNetwork, ESPN, Bravo, and FOXNews Network, to name a few. Inhis spare time, Jesse enjoysmaintaining his real estateproperties, woodworking, andmaking his own wine. He resideswith his wife, Heather, in BenAvon, Pa.

    became the Classrooms for theFuture Technology coach forthe high school. He is also onthe eAcademy Consortium withthe Westmoreland IntermediateUnit. The consortium iseducating school district toimplement online courses.

    DJulia Davis - Sixteen-year-oldJulia Davis is a BloomsburgHigh School junior and thenews editor of the Red & White.Leading a jam-packed life, Julialls almost every minute of herspare time with writing, musicaltheatre, watching reality TV orcaring for her menagerie of farm

    animals. Julia became a PSPAboard member to promoteunbiased, informative andengaging journalism in highschools across the state.

    EJoshua Etterman - JoshuaEtterman is a former PSPA

    Student Board member fromHershey High School. In 2001,while working for thePennsylvania School ReformNetwork and studying atDickinson College , he was one ofthe rst members of PSPAsSection 12.9 team that helpedto stop a proposal to strip Manyprotections from the states

    student journalists. Hiscolumn,From Left Field wonthe 2002 Keystone Press Award

    for Division IV newspapers.Former editor of theElizabethtown Chronicle weekly,he has reported for the HersheyChronicle and The(Hummelstown, Pa.) Sun. Since2002 he has worked for CompleteCollege Solutoins, acollege-planning and nancialconsulting rm.

    FHelen Fallon - Helen Fallon isacting chair of the new Schoolof Communication at Point ParkUniversity. Prior to thisassignment, she served as thechair of its Journalism and MassCommunication Department

    since 1999. She startedteaching full time at the privateliberal arts college in 1986 afterworking for 11 years in the eld asa reporter, copy editor and editorfor three Western Pennsylvanianewspapers and a brief stint inhealth-care public relations. Inaddition to her teaching, Fallonhas worked as a part-time copyeditor rst in the news then

    features department of thePittsburgh Post-Gazette since1987. She actively supports highschool journalism education andhas given or led manyworkshops and lectures to highschool journalism students andtheir teachers throughout herteaching career.

    Heather Starr Fiedler - Dr.Heather Starr Fiedler is anassistant professor of digitalmedia in Point Park UniversitysJournalism and MassCommunication Department.She specializes in new andemerging media technology,especially online journalism. Herclasses include onlinejournalism, Web publication,print design, computer-assistedreporting, and magazine writingand design. She is the adviser of

    Point Parks student-runnewspaper, the newsmagazineand literary magazine. She is alsothe founder and general managerof PittsburghMom.com, amicrosite for Pittsburgh areaparents, that is owned by thePittsburgh Post-Gazette.

    Cheryl Franzmann - CherylFranzmann is a Walsworth

    Publishing Company Keyaccounts representative inwestern Pennsylvania. A formeryearbook adviser at DeLand HighSchool in DeLand, Florida, herstu won ve All-Americans andfour gold medals for their work.Franzmann attended OhioUniversity Scripps School ofJournalism and is a former CSPAand NSPA judge.

    Cari Frei - An employee ofTaylor Publishing Company forthe past eight years, Cari Freiexcels in working with stas andpreparing both new andexperienced advisers for the year.After teaching English, yearbookand newspaper, Frei understandsthe trials of production.

    GSara Ganim - Sara Ganim hasbeen working for the Centre

    Daily Times as a crime reporterfor two years. Last summer, sheinterned at the Associated Press.Before her professional career,Ganim was a reporter for TheDaily Collegian in State College.While there, she placed threetimes in the Hearst awardcompetition. Last year, shereceived an honorable mention

    for a feature story in theKeystone state awards.

    Scott Geesey- Scott Geesey hasbeen a sales and servicerepresentative for JostensYearbooks for the last 10 years,covering central and northernPennsylvania. Geesey alsoworked for the KeystoneCentral School District in

    Clinton County in 1998 and 1999as a teacher and part-time mediaspecialist. His exclusive yearbookwebsite, www.jostenscentralpa.com, is one of the few privatelymaintained yearbook productionwebsites in the country, lledwith ideas, tips, strategies andmore for all yearbook advisersand stas. Before enteringeducation, Scott worked as a

    radio and TV broadcaster for 13years in the State College area.

    Darcy Goshorn - DarcyGoshorn has taught Englishlanguage arts and journalism forve years at East Pennsboro AreaHigh School in Enola,Pennsylvania. Currently, heserves as the Classrooms for theFuture coach,

    where he works with teachers tointegrate 21st Century skills intotheir curriculum. The schools

    newsrooms and classroomsaround the world, and has beentranslated into Russian, Chineseand Polish. His follow-up, InsideReporting, has becomeAmericas best-sellingjournalism textbook. Hes nowpounding away at a new booktentatively titled The CompleteGuide to Online Journalism.

    Janice Hateld - A certiedjournalism educator, JaniceHateld is a member of the

    Pennsylvania School PressAssociation and also newspapercoordinator. Previously, Hateldwas a newspaper adviser andliterary magazine adviser. She isalso a national judge for NSPAand CSPA.

    Mike Joseph - Mike Joseph hasworked as an editor and reporterfor the Centre Daily Times for 10years, with previous work at thePocono Record in Stroudsburg,The Bridgeport Post inConnecticut and an English-language newspaper in Taipei,Taiwan. Awards include arst-place Keystone award forinvestigative reporting about

    Interstate 99 construction.

    LSeana Litt - Former yearbookeditor and adviser, Seana Litt hasbeen using InDesign for morethan seven years to createyearbooks for schools and otherstate organizations. Litt, ayearbook representative fromTaylor Publishing, is also anInDesign instructor for thePennsylvania NewspaperAssociation.

    MSteve Manuel - Steve Manuel isa senior lecturer ofcommunications at Penn State.He earned both undergraduateand graduate degrees from PennState and has been teachingpublic relations andphotojournalism since 1996. Hisphotographs have beenpublished in more than 115

    publications, including USAToday, Sports Illustrated, The

    New York Times and Navy Times.From 1992-1996, he served asspokesman for the U.S. DefenseDepartment at the Pentagon.Manuel has participated as aphotographer in major USOshow tours to teh Balkans, SouthKorea, Cuba and most recentlytoured Kuwait and Iraq withcomedian/actor Dane Cook.

    Mike McVitty - Mike McVitty isa high school art educator in thesmall town of Neville, PA. Hehas worked as a co-adviser forthe schools literary magazinefor four years. As co-adviser hisprimary focus is helping the stawith InDesign and Layout. He isalso vice-president of PSPA.

    Dr. Anthony Moretti - Dr.

    Anthony Moretti joined thePoint Park faculty in August 2005after spending two years teachingat Texas TechUniversity. Moretti primarilyteaches broadcast journalismcourses in the Department ofJournalism and MassCommunication. He teachesbroadcast news writing andproduction classes and

    supervises the twice weeklystudent TV news program andother special broadcast produc-tions. Dr. Moretti earned hisPh.D. from the E.W. ScrippsSchool of Journalism in 2004. Healso holds a masters degree injournalism from Ohio Morettispent almost 13 years in thebroadcast industry as a reporter

    and producer. He worked insouthern California and Ohioin both radio and television and

    covered numerous news andsports events during those years.
