From the Director…A Jam-Packed Schedule!

The Friends of the Library Used Bookstore is located at 103 2nd Ave., Mayodan. The Friends of the Library of Western Rockingham County originally opened the bookstore in Octo-ber of 2006 and doubled their space by moving to their current location in spring of 2009. The used Bookstore has replaced the annual book sale the Friends of the Library held each spring. The bookstore is open every Friday 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

As a non-profit and all of the proceeds benefit the Madison, Mayodan, and Stoneville Libraries. One of the only used bookstores in Rockingham County, there are over 7,000 books and many categories including Fiction, Non-fiction, Self-Help, Religion and Spiritual, His-tory, Biography, Resource, Cookbooks, Sports, Classics, Audio books, Movies and much more. There is a separate Children’s room including Instructional material for parents and teachers. Prices range between .25 and $2.00. All books are donated and tax deductable donations are ac-

Through book sales, donations, and membership fees, the Friends help support many programs and activities such as: Summer Reading Programs, Rockingham Reads, Author Night, and purchases of books, magazines, shelving, and book carts. They also support the new merged Library Branch. Yearly memberships of The Friends of the Library of Western Rockingham County begin at $10 and membership forms can be picked up at the bookstore. New members are always welcome! Some advantages of being a member include shopping 50% off at the bookstore in July and Dec., receiving the newsletter twice a year, one free book with purchase once during the year, and supporting local libraries.

Rockingham County Cooperative Exten-sion Director Brenda Sutton is pleased to an-nounce that a local office of N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service is being established at the Cooperative Extension offices in the Ag Building (Old Wentworth School). The Rockingham County Volunteer Center will help match volunteers with agency needs. The Coop-erative Extension Volunteers will coordinate the effort. An application is available for potential volunteers to indicate their skills, interests, and time availability. Likewise, agencies needing volunteers (both for special events and to help fill on-going needs) can submit request applications. WASHINGTON ─ The U.S. Small Business Administration today launched a new online training course to help strengthen access to contracting opportunities for small businesses, including those owned by women, minorities, disadvantaged individuals and veterans.

The training course, “Recovery Act Oppor-tunities: How to Win Federal Contracts,” is part of a federal government-wide initiative announced last month by President Obama and being led by SBA and the Department of Commerce.

As part of the outreach to small businesses, the comprehensive online course uses both au-dio and script to provide information about the federal marketplace, contract rules and, most importantly, how to sell to the government and where to find contract and Recovery Act oppor-tunities. The new training portal is a free online training course designed to assist entrepreneurs during this period of eco-nomic recovery. This self-paced, instructional guide provides an overview of the federal procurement process.

The Recovery Act Op-portunities course is avail-able on SBA’s Web site at www.sba.gov or directly at www.sba.gov/fedcontrac-tingtraining. The course is indexed by subject matter to allow ease of use, and it includes multiple direct links to additional con-tracting resources. The Recovery Act Opportuni-ties course includes direct links that highlight the best contracting resources and engages small business owners in the contracting process. The course also includes practical and fun-damental steps to engage business owners in the federal contracting arena.
