2009 Summer Programs33 acres of learning by doing and caring

Welcome to Nueva!

Our school community

inspires passion for

lifelong learning,

fosters social and emotional

acuity, and develops the

child’s imaginative mind.

Children enjoy the theme Imagination. Two programs are

offered in the morning: the House of Crocker and Pirates of 1717:

Adventures of the Whydah. Two are offered in the afternoon:

Under the Big Top and Outdoor Adventures. All four programs are

filled with many activities, and they incorporate our Nueva model

for learning.

“I think today was the best day of my life....” Zoe ’16 first day at Nueva

Teens build leadership skills, mentor young campers, attend

mixers, and receive 1:1 mentorship each day from Nueva

faculty and lead instructors.

“This school has taught us to love learning, to forever ask why and prize the wonder of discovery, to learn from errors and not learn failure, to have a mind and not be afraid to use it, and to see the world around us with open eyes and ears and hands and mind and never take anything for granted....”

Laurel ’07

Offerings include a three-week Nueva Musical

Theater Program and Parent/Child one-week Steel Drum sessions.

Campers in grades 3–5 participate in a full-day Creative Academies program. Each week they will choose four programs, two in the morning and two in

the afternoon, that they will pursue for that week. Each

session offers choices: Adventure, Innovation,

Immersion, and Olympic Endeavor.

Summer Program Snapshot “The summer is an amazing time when our school is able to extend its teachings outward into the greater community and welcome more children to experience the wonders of Nueva learning.” Laura Whitsitt, Director of Community Programs

House of CrockerEnter the world of fantasy as children step foot through the front doors of the fantastically decorated lower level of Crocker Mansion and receive their fantasy names for the week. Children will take on roles in a rotational trade workshop system and all children will be chosen to become fantasy Crocker Court leaders each week as they govern the House trades and affairs, have fantasy dress to wear, and enjoy House games and activities. Children will learn old-fashioned etiquette during daily high tea, full of humor and storytelling. In two-week sessions, the House of Crocker will welcome a visitor from a far away land of fantasy. Two-week sessions will culminate with preparations for a dazzling bazaar showcasing the House’s trades.

Pirates of 1717: Adventures of the WhydahDiscover the Golden Age of Piracy! Become a pirate and enter the true story of the Whydah. Learn how real pirates of 1717 were early pioneers of democracy, equality, and loyalty. Dressed as a pirate, build an international crew, leading to the writing of the Whydah Pirate Code of Conduct. As the upper level of the Crocker Mansion is transformed, be immersed in real pirate life, including adventure activities, fencing, rock climbing, treasure hunting, and in two-week sessions, the making of a pirate feast!

Erika Barbero has formerly taught Nueva School students in Japan and will offer her diverse set of talents this summer in K–2, 3–5, and 5–8 programs. Erika graduated magna cum laude from Smith College in Biological Sciences, is an accomplished violinist, and an expert juggler! Under the Big Top, science offerings, and Nueva Musical Theater

Outdoor AdventuresWelcome to the life of an explorer. Enter a world of adventure in Nueva’s wondrous outdoor forts. Each explorer group will build and design their fort and cooperate with neighboring groups on explorer tasks and challenges that rotate and bring together explorers. Explorers will pitch tents, learn how to grow food in Nueva’s garden, care for chickens, hike through wilderness on scavenger hunts, and experience craft projects with nature’s building blocks. Each session will interact with our visiting wildlife experts from Coyote Point Museum who just may bring some animal friends to meet our young explorers. We will end each day with all daily groups coming together for explorer songs in Nueva’s natural outdoor amphitheater, and we will end two-week sessions with a program of lively skits of the explorers’ own creation.

Under the Big TopWhat young child hasn’t at one time wanted to join the circus? Imagination will run wild as young circus performers live the circus life. Under a real circus big top on the mansion lawn, every child will have a chance to wear the “big hat” as they enter the Ringmaster Institute for the Wacky and Wild. From circus clothes full of funkiness to colorful face paint, every child will experience roles through whimsical expression and downright goofy behavior. Nueva’s Ringmaster Extraordinaire will lead daily circus games full of play and laughter for all. By session’s end every child will achieve the status of an Under the Big Top Graduate, with full privileges to spread their talents and love of circus life. In two-week sessions, the circus brings big dreams to life in the Under the Big Top — Day to Dream Big event, led by the Ringmaster’s Wacky and Wild graduates!

A Walk in Ancient China — trip day included!Experience an immersion into the language, history, food, arts, celebrations, and traditions of ancient China.

Writing on the Wall (hieroglyphic art) — trip day included!Using a combination of phonetic symbols and logograms, children will create their own Mayan hieroglyphics. Forwarding into the 21st century, children will explore and create the different forms of graffiti art that exist today.

Cooking with CultureChildren will learn and practice the history, tradition, and hands-on food preparation of two different cultures.

West African Drum and DancingFeel the beat and learn traditional songs, dances, and drum rhythms from the West African countries of Guinea, Senegal, and Mali.Artistically Moved (through Music)Use music as motivation to create art projects through mixed media drawing, painting, or another art of choice. Indian Dance Learn a variety of traditional folk and popular dances from India including Bhangra, Dandiya/Garba, “Diya” (candle) dance, and Spring dance with colorful scarves. This offering blends Indian dance elements with Western dance styles such as hip-hop, ballet, and jazz.Create It!Embrace arts, engineering, music, and technology as building begins. Work with different materials in this do-it-yourself program – electronics, wood, and metal are just some materials you will use to construct your original inventions.

SMART MagicCombine math and art in creative designs. (Some Math and ART) Experiment and learn the tricks and methods of magic.

Adventure

Tree TalkCreate a messaging system from tree to tree in Nueva’s outdoor wilderness complete with ropes, pulleys, swings, and whatever unique designs you create. Each group of five works together to create systems, solve puzzles, and complete tasks using communication between the trees. Each team will be a successful tree-talking unit, communicating in five unique ways across parts of the campus.

Salem Mock Trials (debate and law)Enter the world behind the hysteria. Re-enact the story of the witch-hunt as you live in Salem, Massachusetts, in the year 1692. Explore the many factors behind the witch-hunts as you take on roles such as John Proctor, a witchcraft skeptic, or Anne Putnam, an afflicted girl. Immersed in role-play, you will face the challenges of the Puritans and live in a community wrapped in jealousy, fear, and superstition.

Dollars and Sense (investment role play)When do you get to walk into a camp and be given 1.5 million dollars? You’ll be investing in stock, buying a house, and having fun. Can you double your money or will you lose it all? Act out scenarios, follow the real market, and search the Nueva campus for start-up ideas you can’t help being lured into. Will you have made more dollars or not made much sense?

At the Top (rock climbing)Like to climb? Get fitted into your harness and give Nueva’s indoor rock-climbing wall a try. With newly designed paths to choose from, be encouraged by our instructors to reach any height. Not ready for the wall? Give Nueva’s swinging ropes a try. Swing or climb, there is something fun for everyone.

The Case of Sylvie Sly (mystery and forensic science)You must find the Golden Key before it is too late. Work as a team to gather evidence and form a forensics team. Sylvie Sly is still on the Nueva campus. Sylvie is searching for the lock that protects the map that leads to the legendary, secret, underground passage used to bury treasures in the walls long ago. Learn forensic skills and trace your evidence to find Sylvie Sly. Examine hair, clothing fibers, shoe scuffs, soil, and patterns of fingerprints. Learn processes such as fuming, lifting fingerprints, and chromatography to examine ink blending; then use your observations, search skills, and interviewing to bring Sylvie Sly to justice.

Jenna Greenfield teaches 5th Grade Humanities at The Nueva School and is a former attorney. She has directed a small nonprofit and proudly claims to be an expert on witches! Salem Mock Trials

Innovation

Flight School — trip day included!Explore physics, flight, space, and the earth. Learn aircraft design and prepare your own flight plan. Build and operate a team catapult. Learn about physics and leverage as you design, troubleshoot, and test your catapult, getting it into competitive shape for the end-of-the week launch challenge. Through test flight after test flight, opportunities abound!

Got Game? (science of video games) — trip day included!Designed to deepen children’s high level of interest in animation and gaming. We will cover the vocabulary of the game design discipline, highlight the real-world roles and collaborations that take place within gaming, and introduce projects that allow students to learn game-making skills in both individual and group projects. Gaming is where science and math come together to equal fun!

Toy Design — trip day included! As a toy design company, your group must decide which toy it will design to bring to life. Breaking into teams, work on different movements of the same toy. Use the “wheel of motion” and the scientific principles of motion and light to bring your toy to life right in front of you.

Delve into DNADive in and learn how a biotech lab works. Work hands-on and with models of DNA and proteins, figuring out how they are built and what they actually do. Cryogenics (liquid nitrogen and more!)Learn about temperatures that begin at -240F and the physics and engineering behind the uses of low temperatures. Learn about these temperatures, how they are produced, and test materials that are above and below -240 to learn how they behave.

Wishing upon a Star (solar system investigation) — trip day included!Dive into hands-on activities that explore how our understanding of the cosmos shapes our human experience. Using Nueva’s own portable planetarium, participants will explore constellations and the stories they inspired in ancient civilizations, and we will write our own constellation-inspired myths. We will explore the possibility of life on other planets, study the conditions required for life, and contemplate the messages we might want to send to an extraterrestrial civilization. In culmination, we will use a virtual telescope to create a tour of deep space narrated by student poetry inspired by these beautiful and complex images.

Robotics I and IILearn design, mechanics, and programming in exciting robotics trials and troubleshooting. Offerings are designed for beginning (I) and intermediate (II) students. Participants will work with Lego Mindstorm NXT.

Paula Hundley is a Technology Support Specialist and a technology teacher at The Nueva School. She previously worked for Apple in consumer and educational technical support. Paula has 10 years of experience in IT support and loves gaming! Got Game?

Olympic Endeavor

FencingHave you ever wanted to put that silver equipment on and learn what it is really used for? This is a perfect opportunity to try fundamental fencing techniques and positions. You will learn balance, strength, and coordination.

Team HandballThis indoor Olympic game moves fast as defenders try to stop attackers from approaching the goal. Contact is only allowed when the defensive player is completely in front of the offensive player. Unlike basketball, where players are allowed to commit only 5 fouls in a game (6 in the NBA), handball players are allowed an unlimited number of “faults,” which are considered good defense and disruptive to the attacking team’s rhythm. Goals are quite common in handball; each team usually scores at least 20 goals!

Wushu (martial arts)Become introduced to an ancient Chinese sport full of form, jumping, and tumbling. Wushu in Chinese means “martial arts.” Learn different skills in this art that will help you face challenges and inspire you to succeed.

CricketWicket in Cricket? You’ll have fun saying the names before you even step onto the pitch. A cricket match is played on a grass field where a wicket, usually made of wood, is placed at each end of the pitch and used as a target. The bowler, a player from the fielding team, bowls a hard leather cricket ball from one wicket towards the other, which is guarded by the batsman, a player from the opposing team. Sound crazy? Just wait until you try it!

Great Balls of Fire (ball sports)Ball control, quick decisions, speed, passing on target – futsal is fast and fun! The term futsal is the international term used for the game frequently referred to as five-a-side or mini-soccer. Also learn the real sport of team dodgeball—rules, and strategy. Game after game, this Great Balls of Fire program is a blazer!

Azmi Mamis teaches Physical Education and is the Athletic Director at The Nueva School. Azmi has taught at Nueva for 9 years and came to Nueva from Malaysia where he was teaching and coaching soccer. Cricket and Great Balls of Fire

“As a student, Nueva taught me that it is not only possible, but actually preferable, to undertake projects of your own design, rather than passively accepting things to do. Now that I am a teacher here, I can appreciate that even more, because I see how much preparation it can take to make all of those different projects and resources available, and how much trust it takes on a teacher’s part to let a student have that kind of freedom.” Laura Atkinson ’99
