Remember when pulling out those weeds or moving furniture that we need to look after our backs, shoulders etc as we don’t want an injury to limit our enjoyment during the festive season. If you are a bit stiff you may benefit from a tune up! If you can try to reverse your posture regularly, maintain a neutral spine where possible and remember to contract your deep abdominals at a low load while you work, walk, sit etc until it becomes a natural habit. If this all sounds like a foreign language, see one of our physios who can show you how to protect your joints and become fitter and stronger to enjoy life. On that note if you find it difficult to exercise on your own we run several different exercise classes – some aimed at improving spinal stability, muscle endurance and flexibility and others aimed at improving general fitness (Cardio and LifeStyle Fitness). Making Great Gains This year we have also added a specific Pilates for Men class, a 10 week program addressing spinal muscle control and endurance, flexibility and general strength. This program has been extremely popular with participants making great gains in flexibility and muscle control and reporting significant improvements in their general comfort while working, lifting etc. We are about to start another program on Tuesday mornings at 8am – so if you’re interested book in quickly as we can only take 6 for this program. Teenage Pilates Our teenage Pilate program has continued to be popular and this year we have run both a mat class and equipment circuits for this group. We have a new group starting on Wednesdays and will continue this program throughout the school holidays. Christmas Closure This year Eastern Sports & Spinal Care will be closed from December 24 and reopen on Monday 4 th January 2010. In the meantime, we would be happy to help you get started on an exercise program or give you a tune up so you are ready for the Christmas period. Christmas Time 2009With Christmas looming we become very focussed on preparing the house and garden for houseguests and parties and often forget ourselves!

Felicity in IndiaOn November 27 Felicity will be heading to Vellore in India to work as a volunteer in a hospital setup by an American woman, Ida Scudder who lived in India as a young adult with her family who were missionaries. As a young woman Ida was called upon to assist three women who were having difficult births. Having no medical knowledge she was unable to help and all three died. This prompted her to return to American to study medicine after which she returned to Vellore and initially set up a small infirmary for women and children, which has expanded to become a hospital and training facility to nurses and doctors and has gained worldwide recognition.

We wish Felicity every success in her personal and professional development as she encounters many varied and different health issues and look forward to her stories when she returns in January.

Meanwhile the rest of our team will take over the Cardio and LifeStyle Fitness programs for which Felicity is renowned.

Hot Weather and ExerciseWith the hot weather starting earlier than usual we remind you of the importance of keeping well hydrated.

Don’t drink just when you exercise, it is important to drink regularly each day to keep your blood plasma levels up so that your heart doesn’t have to work hard to pump more thickened blood around your body. They recommend 2 litres of water a day. While coffee, tea and alcohol are liquids, they tend to dehydrate you causing you to excrete more liquid than you take in.

Remember the wee test – if it is not very pale you need to drink more water!

Fel and her coworkers take a well earned break!
