Both the Tiger 1 and the Panther G machineswere designed and built to stand up againstthe Russian T 34. Each carried a crew of 5. Ofthe two tanks, the Tiger 1 was heavier andslower (56.9 tons/38 km/h). The Panther waslighter and faster (44.8 tons/55 km/h) with a75mm gun and a 16hp/ton power ratio. TheTiger had an 88mm gun and with the same690hp engine; but only had a 12.3 hp/tonpower ratio.

Over 6000 Panthers (various models) werebuilt throughout the war, but only 1,355 ofthe various Tigers were produced.

This faithful replication of an Old West stage-coach, includes four horses complete withharness, reins and hitch chains. Adriver and shotgun rider are included,along with three passenger and hold-up man.

The model shown, built by RichardMelillo, shows several creative details not in-cluded in the kit to capture a 3-D ”Momentin Time.” After creating a base he added ac-tual mud, rocks and dirt. The arrow is a

straight pin with paper feathers. He makeshis own rope to “tie on” the luggage by twist-ing together embroidery floss. He added bitsof metal tape to the wheel edges.

To make the shotgun rider appear to beturning around, he manipulated body partsbefore painting. After doing extensive re-search, Richard “ages” his model with paintto help tell the story exactly as it might haveappeared.

At the Campaign of SecondManassas (August 27-September1,1862), the Confederate Armyof North Virginia, under GeneralRobert E. Lee, overran andcaptured a Union ArtilleryBattery. Major General JohnPope of the Union Army ofVirginia lost twenty-six of hisbest artillery men on the hilltopknown as “Battery Heights”.

After the battle, it was usualfor the winning side to takeand utilize the weapons andany supplies available. It was astrong victory for the South andcame as one of the few theywere to have in the rest of war.

Germany’s only aircraft carrier, Graf Zeppelin, wasnamed in honor of Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin.Construction was started in 1936, and plagued withproblems, the war was over before she was completed.She was scuttled by the Germans and later towed toRussia by the Soviets, where she was used for targetpractice until finally sunk in 1947.

The specially designed Stuka (JU87c) had foldingwings and a arresting hook. The ME 109-T hadextended squared-off wing tips, with a similararresting hook. Fifty-seven ME 109-T aircraft werebuilt and tested in over 1,500 take offs and landings.

After the construction of the aircraft was stopped,all the completed planes were used by the Luftwaffeelsewhere. No plane ever took off or landed onthe Graf Zeppelin.

Submarines

The first shots of the Pacific War began when the USSWard sank the HA-20 with a shot from its 3” guns threehours prior to the Pearl Harbor attack. Five mother subsand their midgets where lying in wait at the entrance ofPearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. The mother ships

I-16, I-18, I-20, I-22, I-24 all launched their midgets to gointo Pearl Harbor and sink ships. All were sunk exceptHA-24, which grounded at Hickam Field Beach and wassalvaged and used as a US Bond drive incentive inAmerica. Its pilot was the first Japanese prisoner of war.

Commissioned in 1944, the I-53, one of three in itsclass, was launched in 1943 from Kure Naval Dockyard.C3 boats were fitted with inferior engines due towartime shortages, resulting in a reduced surface speedof 17.75 knots and 6.5 knots submerged; however, addi-tional fuel tanks made it possible for long-range cruises.A Japanese version of a snorkel was first used on theseclass subs.

With modifications, the I-53 was converted into akaiten carrier in November, 1945. Initially, four kaitencould be carried, later it was increased to five. I-53 carried19 torpedoes with six each 21” torpedo tubes on the bow.

On July 24, 1945, in the Philippine Sea, a kaiten ofthe I-53 sank the Navy destroyer Escort USS Underhill(DE 682), the only warship sunk from this type ofweapon. I-53 survived the war, and was scuttled by the

The mother subs, designed in the mid-thirties,continued on in the war. All were refitted by the end ofNovember, 1941, to carry the Midgets to Pearl Harbor.IJN I-20 was one of five C1 type submarines developedfrom the KD6 (class). With a typical compliment of 101crew members, they could cruise at 23.5 knots when

surfaced and 8 knots while submerged. The deepest theycould submerge was 330 feet. The after casing (space aftof the conning tower) was reserved for the fitting of oneType A midget submarine. The U.S. forces sank all, I-22IaN 1942, I-18, I-20, I-24 in 1943 and I-16 in 1944.

US Navy off of Goto, Japan, in April, 1946.The Japanese began development of the Kaiten

(“Turning of the Heavens”) in early 1944. The kaitentorpedo program was not accorded high priority until afterthe Imperial Japanese Navy’s failure to defend the Mari-anas in 1944. The kaiten featured the combinationof a Type 93 oxygen-powered 48’4” X 24” torpedo witha large warhead guided by a human pilot. The warheadcontained a charge of 3300 lbs. of high explosive witha maximum speed of 30 knots.

The first Kaitens required the pilot to enter while themother submarine was surfaced. Later modificationsallowed for entry through a lower hatch fitted in thekaiten. Once inside, the pilot received target data bytelephone (with break-away line) before being launched.Actual successes were few and heavy losses were sufferedas there was no way to return to the mother ships. It wasa “one way “ mission, part of the “Kamikaze — SpecialAttack” tactics. All, a failed attempt, to destroy the enemy.

The Graf Zeppelin made its first trip tothe United States, October 11, 1928.Carrying 63 people and cargo, it aver-aged 56.6 miles per hour. The flightlasted 111 ½ hours and covered 6,000miles. On its return trip to Germany,it made a record breaking time of 71hours and 12 minutes — a new recordfor airships.

The Hindenburg disaster provedto be a fatal blow toward any furtherdevelopment of the great airships. Themajor hazards for these airships were

weather, fire, and the resulting explosionof burning hydrogen.

The Graf Zeppelin made its lastflight to South America in 1938 and wasretired and dismantled in 1939. The re-tirement of the Graf brought the era ofthe great airships to an end.

This Graf Zeppelin model kit hasbeen specially designed for the experi-enced model builder. This kit has beenretooled and reissued to include interiorof control cabin.

The USS Los Angeles was a rigid airship,designated as ZR-3. Built in 1923-1924 by the Zep-pelin factory in Friedrichshafen, Germany,the original designation was LZ-126. The airshipwas given to the United States by the German Gov-ernment, since it was partially funded by war repa-rations fromWorld War I.

The airship was commissioned into the U.S.Navy on November 25, 1924, at Anacostia, D.C.,with Maurice R. Pierce in command. At the sametime, it was switched over from hydrogen to heliumgas, which reduced payload but improved safety.The USS Los Angeles logged a total of 4,398 hoursof flight, covering a distance of 172,400 nauticalmiles (319,300 km) flying from the Pacific to the At-lantic. It not only served as an observatory and ex-

perimental platform, it was a training ship for otherairships.

On August 25, 1927, while tethered at the Lake-hurst high mast, a gust of wind caught the tail of theLos Angeles and it was lifted it into colder, denserair, just above the airship. The tail continued to liftreaching an angle of 85 degrees. After finally de-scending, the ship suffered only slight damage andwas able to fly the next day.

As an economy measure, it was decommis-sioned in 1932, and later re-commissioned for abrief period after the USS Akron crashed in April1933. Struck from the Navy list in 1939, anddismantled in its hangar, the career of the longestserving airship ended without disaster.

LOS ANGELES was key in the development ofthe low-mast mooring system for airships andthe technique of an airship-airplane hook-on,in 1929-31.

The USS Los Angeles carried a light biplanefighter aircraft, the Curtiss Sparrowhawk, whichwas designed to be deployed from a larger air-craft. At 20 feet (6m) long and with only a 25foot (7m) wingspan, the Sparrowhawk was idealfor service with rigid-framed airships because ofits small size.

Although armed, its primary duty wasreconnaissance and observation, giving airshipsit served on a much wider search area. For launch-ing, the Sparrowhawk would free-fallfrom outside the airship's hangar, and for recov-ery, it would hook a trapeze in mid-flight and bemechanically pulled into the airship.
