Returning in June 2009 forits 11th year, the NorthDevon Festival is recognisedas being one of the topfive events in the countryby The Times.

The Festival celebratesthe rich cultural life of thearea with dance, music, fairs,art, lifestyle, sport, theatre,comedy, nature, heritage andcommunity events happeningthroughout the area over themonth of June.

Many of our Festival events are inspired by ourunique environment, one that is recognised acrossthe world for its landscapes, wildlife and culture.The dramatic and inspiring North Devon coast isdesignated as an Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty and sits next to the woodlands, clearstreams and high moorlands of Exmoor NationalPark. Large parts of these areas are included in theUK’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Festivalaims to develop new ways of bringing people andthe environment together to make it a truecelebration of culture, landscape and life.

2009 marks the 200thbirthday of Charles Darwin,creator of the theory ofevolution. The Museums ofDevon present a programmeof celebratory events toinclude exhibitions, talks,events and the Darwin inDevon tour.

Darwin travelled throughDevon on his way toboard the Beagle in 1831.On this voyage he gatheredinformation which laid thefoundation of the theory ofNatural Selection. Darwin alsocollected evidence from ahuge army of amateurnaturalists around the UK.These people were alsocreating the collectionswhich local museumshold today.
