secretary, charged with administration of the Bank’s board of directors and

advisory councils. He is a member of the National Association for Business

Economics and the Philadelphia Council for Business Economics. He serves on

Christopher C. GezcyThe Wharton School

Christopher C. Geczy, Ph.D., is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance at The

Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His current research focuses

on various topics including risk management, multifactor models, the

performance of managed funds, various aspects of equity lending and short-

selling, and shareholder agreements among parties to firms. His work has

appeared in various books and scholarly journals including the Journal of

Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Political Economy.

It has also been covered in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The

Financial Times, Forbes, SmartMoney Magazine, on CNBC’s Squawk Box and

in numerous other media outlets. Professor Geczy is a Fellow of the Wharton

Financial Institutions Center and has been the New York Stock Exchange

Chris worked for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System,

Washington, D.C., in its Division of Research and Statistics. He regularly teaches

investment management and co-created the first full course on hedge funds

at The Wharton School along with a number of executive education courses

and has taught AIMR-accredited professional Risk Management courses

Economic Advisory Board of the NASDAQ, acts as an editor of the Journal of

Alternative Investments, is a founding board member of the Mid-Atlantic Hedge

Fund Association, and serves on the curriculum and exam committees of the

Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association. Chris has consulted

for clients in the areas of asset allocation, hedge fund portfolio analysis and

development, financial risk management, and the development of investment

and trading strategies. Focusing on the recent turbulence in today’s financial

environment, this session will first provide a broad survey of economic trends

affecting firms, markets, and investors. It will help to frame how the business

cycle (recessions and booms, bubbles and crashes) affects interest rates and

bond prices, as well as corporate earnings and stock prices. After this broad

overview of the current state of the economy, the session will explore the

number of alternative investment options that are available to investors and

will discuss the important and critical role they play in investor portfolios, while

understanding the different risk and liquidity

profiles from those in standard asset classes.

Panelists: Joe Sullivan, Vice President and Treasurer, Airgas, Inc.;

Mark Rothleitner, Vice President Investor Relations & Treasurer,

The Black and Decker Corp.

In today’s continuing financial crisis, treasurers have had to peel back layer after

layer to identify financial risks that had never concerned them until now. Not

a few treasurers have found themselves grossing up borrowing notices to fill

holes left by Lehman Brothers or Bear Stearns, or finding receivables financing

programs withdrawn, or discovering auction-rate securities weren’t really just a

yield-enhanced cash equivalent, or that their 401(k)’s stable value fund wasn’t

so stable. These issues and others led to attention at the shareholder and board

levels of treasurers’ efforts at risk identification, tracking and mitigation. Hear

a panel of treasurers discuss how they’ve mended these and other potential

holes in their companies’ financial safety nets.

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

General Session: Liquidity Management in Volatile MarketsRose Garden

Moderators: Brad Fox, Vice President & Treasurer, Safeway, Inc.;

The credit crisis has placed considerable stress on corporate treasurers in both

the short term financing and investing arenas. Within this context, however,

creativity and at times, ingenuity have been required to find new ways to

manage liquidity risks. This panel session will present case studies from NACT

member companies on innovative approaches to the short term markets.
