On May 30, 2009, Texas High School proudly graduated 312 students who had earned scholarship offers totaling $12,220,271. Texarkana Independent School District honors the district’s graduating seniors who have achieved superior academic performance through the cum laude system. Under this system, students earning a high grade point average can place in one of three categories at graduation: summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude. Students, in effect, are competing against a pre- established academic standard of excellence rather than against their peers. With the cum laude system, the district is able to recognize all deserving students for academic excellence upon graduation. Texas High School recognizes as honor graduates those students with weighted grade point averages at or above specific benchmarks. e weighted grade point system applies a weighted factor to the grade earned by the student in the class. Higher weighting factors are applied to advance placement courses, concurrent enrollment courses and pre-advanced placement courses. Summa Cum Laude recognizes those students with a weighted average of 155.0 or higher which is the equivalent of a 97.6 or higher average in standard courses and an 87.4 or higher average in Pre-AP or AP courses, or a combination of the two. Magna Cum Laude recognizes those students with a weighted average of 150.0 or higher which is the equivalent of a 95.9 or higher average in standard courses and an 85.8 or higher average in Pre-AP or AP courses, or a combination of the two. Cum Laude graduates must maintain a weighted average of 143.0 points which is equivalent to an average of 90 in standard courses. Students, in effect, are competing against a pre-established academic standard of excellence rather than against their peers. With the cum laude system, the district is able to recognize all deserving students for academic excellence upon graduation. Texas High School recognizes as honor graduates those students with weighted grade point averages at or above specific benchmarks. The weighted grade point system applies a weighted factor to the grade earned by the student in the class.
