History can and will repeat itself

Throughout history, every recession has seen an unlikely outcome the

emergence of some great entrepreneurs. Billionaires such as Bill Gates

and Richard Branson didnt shy away from difficult times and Kleeneze

is no different. Our top Distributor, Bob Webb, rode to success on the

back of the 1990s recession, as did many more of the

top Network leaders.

Recessions lead to change. And when things change,

there are opportunities. And good business people are

those that seize these opportunities, because thats

what makes them successful. Bob Webb

Customers change their habits

Most retail businesses were reporting significant downturns at the end

of last year. Here at Kleeneze, though, we were 11% up on the

previous December. When times are good, customers stick to what

theyre used to regardless of expense. Now, customers will be

looking around for more cost-effective alternatives that will still provide

them with the service they need.

Tough times see out weak competition

We arent in the expensive luxury retail market. We dont sell high

priced items - our average price is 5-6, which is why we will always

win hands down when money is tight. We know more people are

staying away from shops, but thats not a problem - we take the shop

to them. We offer a unique, free, personal, home delivery service. Who

can compete with that?

No risk

On the whole, people dont like to take risks especially with their

finances. However, at a time when jobs are no longer safe and the job

market no longer thriving, that risk just seems less risky. Now with the

SOS incentive, you can make your start-up fee back in a matter of

weeks anyway.

Finding money

It may not be about redundancy or even earning extra cash for some.

Many people will be put off starting up their own business at the

moment, because of worries that the banks have cut back on their

lending. Its a valid concern.

The average initial outlay for setting up a franchise is 45,400, though

again this varies dependent on the sector. Around half of franchiseesborrow money to set up the average amount being 50,500.

Kleeneze, on the other hand, costs between only 75-151 to set up

and rather than wait six months to two years before you yield a profit,

you can reap the cash rewards straight away with no overheads or

employment or staff costs. And there are no restrictions on earnings.

Hire the boss! (because sacking the boss isso last year)

Last week, the BBC published an extract from a new document by the

Chartered Institute of Personnel that suggests more than one in three

UK employers are planning to cut jobs in the first three months of

2009. In January we saw a massive influx of new people almost 25%

higher than January 2008 and its inevitable that your new team

members will know someone who is being made redundant. Forget

sacking the boss you could be recruiting them very soon!

I was speaking to a consultant recently who told me that last year if

you were made redundant you would be out of work for 3 months on

average, this has now risen to 6 months, and will probably rise again.

You need to make sure youre able to support, to nurture these people

that join us through redundancy. Most will be in shock and denial,

believing they will soon find a job, so they cant spend too much time

on Kleeneze.

Its vital that you and your team help them build a plan to get

to a full time income through both retail and sponsoring inline with

So, weve established that its not a happy time for the economy at the moment. Were aware that there is a huge

number of people who are looking for a way to pay their mortgages. It should be, by now, incredibly obvious that

millions of people are currently unemployed and in great need of a regular income. And, if all of this has somehow

managed to pass you by, you cannot have failed to notice that some of the biggest names in retail Woolworths,MFI, Zavvi and The Pier to name but a few are no longer in existence.

When you factor all of this in, it stands to reason that when asking people if they want to start up their own business

in retail, no less they may think youre nuts. But they need to listen up right now is the perfect time to start a

business. Its possible they could need a little more justification than that though!
