On-site volunteers logged 275 group hours and 1,474 individual hours to accomplish the following (plus so much more):
• Removed the greenhouse in the Enabling Garden and remodeled the base
into a large raised bed with perimeter seating.
• Remodeled the current informational kiosk and added a second kiosk south
of the Enabling Garden.
• Hosted successful Memorial Day Event, Mid-Summer Celebration, Wine &
Scarecrows and the Fall Harvest Festival.
• Bought a new gator made possible by fundraising efforts and grant funds.
• Renovated the Head House to provide additional storage and a more
welcoming and safe environment for volunteers.
• Replaced the diseased catalpa trees in the parking lot with honeylocust
trees.
• Constructed a cement walking path from the Activity Lawns to the Shade
Garden.
The Board of Directors was also busy at work developing new policies to help The Arboretum operate smoothly and in a more professional manner. Policies included acquisition of public art, facility rentals, gift acceptance and on-site professional photography policies. Committees worked diligently to improve on-site programs and events as well as fundraise to meet our annual operating budget.
Dear Volunteers, Members, Friends, Donors, and other Supporters, What a great year 2009 has been for The Arboretum! “We’re all about growing . . ., “ has been my theme for the year. As you read through this annual report, you will see the many ways that The Arboretum has grown during the year – site improvements, new volunteers doing some new tasks, new sources of funds to help develop and maintain our green space, new knowledge gained, and best of all simply more people enjoying The Arboretum in the ways that help them grow and thrive. However you have helped this year – by lifting that shovel, writing that check, coming up with that great idea, pulling those dratted weeds, taking that photo, making that emergency repair, inviting that new person to join, contributing those beautiful annuals, mowing that vigorously growing grass, studying that financial report, writing those personal notes, creating one or more of those incredible scarecrows, cooking those potatoes, reading that story to children, tending to those fish ponds, or killing those Japanese beetles, YOU have made this a successful year for The Arboretum – a Growing Year for us all. Thank you! Your invaluable support makes it possible for Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens to be an ever-growing part of our community. We’re all about growing . . . because of you. Here’s to exciting growth in 2010, because of you. Pam Hays – President, Board of Directors

Learn…
What a wonderful summer of classes we had this year at The Arboretum! We couldn’t have asked for better summer weather, which led to a lot of fun in the Children’s Garden! Our Terrific Tadpoles (ages 3-5) had no problems learning through fun messes of painting flowers with Kool-Aid, digging through different kinds of dirt, and soaring around the Children’s Garden as birds! A huge thanks goes to the parents and grandparents who attended the Terrific Tadpole classes with their little ones! We were able to go a bit more in-depth with our Friendly Frogs (ages 6-8) classes. These students got to build “Veggie Vehicles,” create artwork with plant material, and sketch prairie grasses in their Iowa’s Prairie Sketch Books Story time was a great success again this summer! Those who had come last summer and then returned this year saw how big Jake the Snake had grown over the winter. From spiders and bees to butterflies and fairies, our wonderful storytellers delighted children of all ages at each Wednesday story time! 2009 was the 7
th year of the “Petals and Blooms” program which brought together children and adults with
disabilities to form meaningful relationships while learning about nature. Adult programming was also very popular with classes ranging from photography to container gardening and landscape design.
As far off as summer may seem, it shall soon return and we will once again be playing and learning in the gardens. We hope to see you again in our 2010 classes!
Fall Harvest Festival Weekend Thank you for supporting The Arboretum’s 11
th annual Fall Harvest Festival!
The 2009 theme was “Green Space, Your Place!” Between the Saturday evening fundraiser to the Sunday family festival, the weekend was enjoyed by over 3,000 visitors. For the first time, Wine & Scarecrows was a fundraising event with all proceeds helping support The Arboretum’s general fund. Guests sipped wine while strolling through the music-filled gardens, bid on silent auction items, and ate a delicious pork dinner in the gardens. Make sure to not miss this event next September! The Sunday free festival included an open-air market, petting zoo, food vendors, and children’s games and craft activities while over 80 scarecrows were displayed in the gardens. Thank you to the event’s major Sponsors: City of Waterloo Hotel Motel Tax Fund, John Deere Waterloo Operations, Northeast Iowa Family Practice Center, Service Roofing Co., and On Media Precision TV Advertising. Thank you to the business and individual in-kind donors listed below; 125 volunteers; and free entertainment provided by UNI Community Music School – Kindermusik, UNI Suzuki School String Musicians, UNI student jazz musicians, Kinetic Energy School of Movement & Music and Cedar Falls High School Madrigal Singers. We hope to see you at this year’s Wine & Scarecrows celebration September 18th and Festival on September 19, 2010!

In 2009, hundreds of dollars of plant material and other items were donated thanks to the many volunteers and community gardeners that tend
the gardens throughout the season. There are too many to list here, but The Arboretum thanks you for your financial support and volunteer
hours. The gardens are bright and beautiful with color because of you! We would also thank the many Cedar Valley businesses that have given
in-kind gifts throughout 2009.
Linda
Have you considered putting The Arboretum in your will? Besides a bequest, there are also many ways to give a planned gift to The Arboretum. The Arboretum will be happy to work with you or your financial advisor concerning this. One planned giving option is to donate to The Arboretum's Endowment Fund, managed by the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. Contact the Community Foundation at 319-287-9106 or visit http://www.cfneia.org for further information if this is an option you prefer.

Outstanding Service
As we celebrate our 2009 accomplishments, we’d like to acknowledge the outstanding service of three board members as they complete their board terms: Linda Fisher, Nancy Friedman, and Kevin McCrindle. Linda – is completing a three-year term on the board of directors. Besides serving as a board member, Linda has made many different types of contributions to The Arboretum, not the least of which is making possible the pig roast for Wine and Scarecrows! Linda has faithfully created and maintained community gardens for many years, and also has been active with marketing projects. Kevin – is completing his second three-year term on the board. For six years, he has supported the board regularly with his attendance and his active support of all events. Being an attorney, he has been alert to any potential legal considerations the board might have to deal with and has helped The Arboretum develop needed policies regarding different issues. Nancy – has been on the board for the last six years, serving as president of the board for three of those years, Fall Harvest Festival chair for 2009, and on the Director of Horticulture Search Committee in 2007 board term. Through her tenure with The Arboretum, dating to its beginning in 1995, Nancy has served on numerous arboretum committees and chaired many of them! She creates and maintains two community gardens annually and contributes to The Arboretum in every possible way, dealing with the most down and dirty tasks (she can be found digging and weeding most days in the summer at the arboretum) as well as with some of the most complicated (issues of high finance and vision!).

Mission Statement The mission of the Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens is to enhance the quality of life for all individuals through horticulture. We seek to enrich life by nourishing and sharing the beauty of the natural world, the joy of gardening, knowledge of plants, and the diversity of our world. We accomplish this mission by:
Maintaining an extensive plant collection, in which trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plant material are cultivated for scientific, educational and ornamental purposes. Providing a focal point for individuals and groups across the Cedar Valley that share a passion for horticulture, botany, and the natural world. Generating excitement and interest concerning the variety and importance of the plant world and fostering respect for the earth by being an environmental education center for both adults and children of all ages.
Promoting knowledge and appreciation of plant species that thrive in the Cedar Valley.
Providing a place where people can walk, gather and rest in areas where they can enjoy trees and shrubs, and plantings are clearly labeled and explained for educational purposes.
Maintaining open, green space, which provides a showcase of environmental stewardship of 74 acres of Iowa land, pro-tecting the natural habitats of bird and animals.
Providing a beautiful, outstanding outdoor venue for community celebrations, as well as a leisure destination for visitors, tourists, and prospective employees.
