For nearly 100 years, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has been dedicated to ending animal homelessness and providing care and comfort for those who have no voice - the animals of Hillsborough County. Over the course of it’s history, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has experienced tremendous growth and major challenges but most importantly support from the community in its endeavors to serve and protect.

In moving forward at a rapid pace, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, through its partnership with Hillsborough County Animal Services, is attempting to end euthanasia

as a means of controlling overpopulation and to fi nd a home for every companion animal in Hillsborough County. To fulfi ll that goal, in 2009 the Humane Society of Tampa Bay distributed over 300,000 pounds of food through the Food Assistance Program, evaluated and treated 1,364 owned pets in the newly opened Wellness Clinic, performed over 10,000 surgeries at the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic operating proudly since 2000 and vaccinated 2,243 pets of the needy at our free shot clinics. Though large numbers, what these statistics represent is most important, a decline in the euthanasia rate by over 41% since 2005. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without your help and support.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Advisory Board of Directors, and our staff and volunteers, a sincere thank you.

Holly O’Brien, PresidentThe Humane Society Board of Directors

We certainly hit a milestone in 2009 when we completed our 5000th adoption. By December 31st we saved 5,305 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Many of these animals had been transferred in from high risk shelters. Our goals with our partners at the ASPCA and Hillsborough County Animal Services were to increase the save rate and dramatically decrease the euthanasia rate in our county. We are meeting this goal every day as you can see on the graph on page 4. In 2009 we expanded our work in the community so that animals can stay with their owners rather than be turned in to a shelter because of the tough economic times. We did this by increasing our food assistance program, our free shot clinics and opening our affordable Wellness Clinic to the public.

In 2009 we received a 4 star charity rating, the highest you can get, because of our fi duciary responsibilities. You can feel good about donating to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. We stretch your donations to help as many animals that we possibly can. 86 cents of every dollar goes to fund our life saving programs. On behalf of our staff and volunteers, thank you for continuing to support the work that we do for the animals!

2009 was a diffi cult year for many. With an unemployment rate of nearly 13% in Hillsborough County, many people needed help and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay was there. Our Free Food Assistance program (now re-named “Casper’s Cupboard”), gave away nearly 300,000 pounds of free food to hungry pets. In addition, our Animeals program delivered food to 125 homebound pet owners per month.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay was also very proud to open our Affordable Wellness Clinic. Low cost vet services are now available to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here struggling pet owners can fi nd affordable vaccines, heartworm tests,

fl ea and heartworm preventatives, as well as other medical procedures they would otherwise be unable to afford for their pets.

HSTB spayed and neutered 10,363 animals last year. This will prevent thousands of unwanted pregnancies and unwanted litters from ending up on the streets and in the shelters of our community.

Finally, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay continued its commitment to help bring pet vaccines into needy areas. In 2009 HSTB administered 2,243 vaccines to pets at our three free shot clinics.

HSTB IN THE COMMUNITY

Dr. Yeruva examining a patient at the Wellness Clinic.

Despite the economic downturn last year, for the fi rst time in its history, HSTB was able to adopt out over 5,000 animals! Of the 5,306 adoptions, 2,654 of those were animals saved from shelters with a high-euthanasia rate and that otherwise might not have been saved.

HSTB is committed to saving more lives than ever before and hopes to surpass 5,000 adoptions again in 2010!

Some Very Special Adoptions in 2009…

Lucky was found completely covered in hardened glue. He was shaved and then

lovingly cared for at HSTB before fi nding a wonderful home a few weeks later!

Casper was found starved and near death by HCAS. After several months of rehabilitation at HSTB, he found a loving mom and shares his home with

another dog and cat. He is the namesake for “Casper’s Cupboard”.

Merry was transferred to HSTB after giving birth to 4 puppies in a high-euthanasia shelter. After 8 weeks of

love and shelter at HSTB, mom and all her babies found the loving homes they

deserved!

Can you imagine anyone leaving these kittens in a box by our dumpster?

Unfortunately, someone did. HSTSB took them in and found each of them

their forever home.

Noel & Breeze were horribly mistreated and called a 3 foot patch of dirt their backyard. HSTB provided them the medical help they needed and then

found them homes.

Adding on to Save more Animals

In 2009 we continued and strengthened our commitment to help fi nd homes for at risk animals. We know that our partners at Hillsborough County Animal Services are able to fi nd homes for most of the puppies and small dogs. Their challenge is fi nding homes for the larger dogs and adult cats. We did not have the capacity to hold more large dogs, so we constructed an outdoor covered patio to house them. This “Second Chance Patio” has 18 larger dog runs. Each week we take at risk dogs from Animal Services. They stay on our patio until we have room in our adoption ward. As soon as there is a cage available the dog is moved to our adoption program. This patio saves big dogs every week. Thank you to Board Member, Bob Reina, and Maddie’s Fund® for making this patio possible!

Our Generous DonorsWe thank each and every one of you for your support in this past year. Without your support, we could not save all the lives that we did in 2009. We would love to mention every donor, but space limitations allow us to recognize by name only those who have contributed $200 or more in 2009, but in our hearts, we thank you all!
