Introduction

Every year, the Telfer School of Management Career Centre prepares an “Alumni

Status Report”. Similar to many of the leading business schools, the University of

Ottawa Telfer School of Management drafts this report in order to highlight the

achievements of its graduates approximately one year after graduation.

Students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels can study in any of the

various academic programs offered in either of the two official languages. The only

exception to this is the Executive Master of Business Administration Program and

the part-time MBA program, which is offered only in English in 2009. However,

students in these programs can submit their assignments and write their exams in

French.

In 2009, the Telfer School of Management offered a four year Bachelor of

Commerce Program at the undergraduate level. This program is an honours

baccalaureate in commerce offering enriched high-level administration courses,

leading to a number of career opportunities and providing the basic instruction required

to undertake studies at the graduate level. Students registered in fourth year were

able to choose an honours program with or without the following options: Accounting,

E-Business, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources Management,

International Management, Management, Marketing, and Management of Information

Systems (MIS). All programs, with or without an option, are four years in duration.

The Telfer School of Management also offered the following programs at the

graduate level in 2009: the Master of Health Administration (MHA), the Master of

Science in Management (MSc Management), the Master of Science in Health

Systems (MSc HS), the Master of Business Administration (MBA), the Executive MBA

(EMBA), and the joint MBA-LAW Program (MBA-LLB or MBA-LLL).

Co-operative Education Programs were also available for all options of the four-

year program, allowing students to obtain a specialization while combining academic

studies with practical work experience. At the end of the second year, paid work terms

within an organization alternate with study periods.

Undergraduate students also had the option to spend a semester or year abroad

within the International Exchange Program. Their academic and professional

endeavours could be completed in a different environment, while discovering a new

culture and the different customs of Australia, Austria, China, Denmark, England,

France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden,

Switzerland, Thailand and the United States. In fact, the Telfer School of Management

offered opportunities in 45 international universities in 2009.

Method

The “2009 Alumni Status Report” is a compilation of data from a survey of graduates—

class of 2009—from the Telfer School of Management. The class of 2009 includes

students who, having completed their studies, attended the convocation in June 2009

and October 2009, as well as the EMBA class of 2007-2009.

In May 2010, a mailing list of the 2009 graduates from the Telfer School of

Management was requested from the Alumni Office. Using this data, each of the 708

graduating students received a personalized letter explaining the survey‟s objectives.

For environmental reasons, graduates did not receive a hard copy of the survey.

Instead, they were directed to a URL where the survey could be completed

electronically.

Our overall final response rate for the 2009 Alumni survey was 36%. The

following table compares the response rates from 2006 to 2009, divided by program:

Response Rate B.Com MBA / MHA EMBA Total

2006 35% 55% 59% 44%

2007 36% 57% 70% 41%

Six different surveys were created; two French (Undergraduate and Graduate)

and four English (Undergraduate, MBA/MHA, MSc and EMBA) surveys. Each survey

was specifically tailored to the individual programs in order to accurately reflect the

different Telfer School of Management programs.

In late June 2010, graduates were called at home in the afternoons,

encouraging them to complete the survey either on-line or directly over the phone.

The data was compiled with “Perseus Surveys Solutions” software. The answers

to questionnaires completed via the website were automatically inserted into their

corresponding database

The “Alumni Status Report” is separated into two sections: the results (in tables

and charts), and appendices providing the lists of employers/job titles; all results are

divided by program. Data regarding the different options of the B.Com are also

included. When consulting this document, please note that the data was drawn from

258 responses from the 688 graduates, of which: 175 were B.Com respondents, 54

were MBA respondents, 9 were MHA respondents and 20 were EMBA respondents.

There was only 1 graduate of the MSc program and results were not disclosed in the

report to respect respondent confidentiality. Please note that the 258 respondents did

not answer all questions of the survey.

Overall School Results

General Information

In 2009, the Telfer School of Management awarded 688 diplomas. Of this total,

80% were from undergraduate programs, while the remaining 20% were graduate

students.

The following table breaks down the number of graduates by program of study

since 2006:

The subsequent analyses include only the information provided by the number of

respondents to each individual question. The number of respondents from each of

the other programs varies depending on the nature of the question.

Placement Rate

The following table summarizes the placement rate of our 2009 graduates

across 3, 6, 9, and 12 month intervals. For B.Com, MBA and MHA graduates, we

asked them how long it took them to find their first job after graduation.

With respect to the EMBA graduates‟ employment profile, we asked them how long it

took them before their first promotion or career shift after graduation.

Salary

Telfer School of Management graduate students (MBA, MHA, and EMBA) were

asked their annual salary both prior to starting their program and one year after

graduation. Undergraduate students were only asked the latter as most students

entering an undergraduate program do so immediately after high school and have no

full-time work experience. The following table shows the average salary for the 2007,

2008, and 2009 graduates as well as the average increase in salary for the 2009

graduate students. All graduate level alumni obtained significant salary increases, the

highest being 34% for MHA students.

Overall Satisfaction

In section three, we asked graduates about their general level of satisfaction with

their Telfer School of Management program. Using a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = Not at all

satisfied and 10 = Very satisfied), the highest average score was an 8.2 from the

EMBA graduates:

The following table summarizes student satisfaction rates from 2006-2009:

Year B.Com MBA MHA EMBA

2006 7.3 7 6.8 7.5

2007 7.4 7.6 7.6 8.5

2008 7.5 7.5 7.3 8.3

2009 7.2 7.7 6.9 8.2

Overall, we can conclude that the 2009 graduates are more than satisfied with their

program of studies at the Telfer School of Management.

Legend

Throughout the report, the results will be displayed in tables that will show the

frequency ( f ) and the percentage (%) of response for each question.
