This is UAA!ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s larg-est, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a mini-mum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Commencement ceremonies take

place in early May at Sullivan

Arena.

Opened in 2003, UAA’s new library building (above) is an architectural gem at the heart of campus. A new science building is currently under construction as well, helping UAA stay at the forefront of today’s research technology.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICSNicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country.

UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament.

Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 124 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 14 individual national champions since 1991.

The Seawolves are currently coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history, with NCAA Semifi-nals appearances for men’s and women’s basketball, strong NCAA team showings from men’s and women’s track & field and skiing, and the first individual NCAA track & field title in UAA history by long jumper David Registe.

UAA athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 11 of the last 14 years.

UAA became just the second school in NCAA Div. II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s basketball teams to the Final 4 when it pulled the trick in 2007-08.

has one of the more unique mascots in the country. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977.

The name Seawolf represents a mystical sea creature and, according to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it rep-resents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

Sanders, a Washington native who Stoklos is counting on for all-around contributions. “Shakea is physically strong and lean,” Stoklos said. “She will potentially be one of our top vaulters and floor workers. She’s right up there with Agostino on floor and vault.” Kaelei Spoor – a decorated high school gymnast from New York – has the potential to crack the lineup on vault, beam and floor. Stoklos is confident she will be among the team’s top competitors on beam. Colorado native Jackie Thomas will be counted on strongly to help fill the void in UAA’s beam lineup left by the absence of Cole and Fullerton. Fellow rookie Erin Aitcheson could see action on bars and vault, while walk-on Tori Barrow has her best chance to get into the lineup on floor.

uted as a freshman. In addition to Cole’s absence, Stoklos was dealt another preseason blow when sophomore Kelsey Fullerton went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. The Texan would have been a staple in the vault, beam and floor lineups, where she averaged 9.423 or better on all three events. Another sophomore, Rebekah Booth, returns after practicing and competing on exhibitions in 2008. The talented freshman class may be highlighted by the addition of Shakea

As Paul Stoklos leads the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics program into

its silver anniversary season, he will do so with one of the youngest Seawolf squads in his 25 years as head coach. But that’s not to say that the senior-less Seawolves will be devoid of talent as they shoot for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title. UAA returns five experi-enced gymnasts – three juniors and two sophomores – to go with five exciting freshmen for the 2009 campaign. The talented trio of juniors will be depended upon heavily as potential all-arounders Courtney Williams and Lauren Agostino should anchor the lineup along with vault and beam specialist Meagan Byrne. Williams has competed as an all-arounder in 21 of her 24 career meets, delivering a career-high of 38.325 last sea-son. Meanwhile, Agostino, a 2007 NCAA West Regional all-around qualifier, returns from a season off. “Courtney is pretty rock-solid on every-thing,” Stoklos said. “She’s very confident in everything she’s doing and is really hit-ting her routines. As for Lauren, it’s really good to have her back. I think the year off was good for her; it let her focus on why she wanted to be back in school. She’s back with a real intensity about what she wants to do and where she wants her edu-cation to take her.” Byrne returns for her second go-round as team captain, but the squad’s emotional leader should also provide a big lift on her two main events, where she owns career-highs of 9.725 (beam) and vault (9.625). Junior Micki Cole returns to the ros-ter as well in 2009, however the Phoenix native will likely be sidelined for the year following off-season shoulder surgery. The sophomore class will be led by Kristy Boswell, who Stoklos calls one of the hardest workers he’s ever coached. Last year the New Jersey native posted the second-best bars average in school history (9.644) as she helped the Seawolves smash multiple school records on that apparatus. “Kristy is consistent and works tireless-ly,” Stoklos said. “You ask her to do an assign-ment and she’ll do twice that every day. She never complains about anything. She’s a very hard worker, very focused and disciplined. We hope to expand her repertoire to include more vault and beam this year and make her an all-around competitor.” Sophomore Maria Puricelli was anoth-er big reason for UAA’s success on bars last year, posting the fifth-best average (9.585) ever for a Seawolf. The Missourian could also see action on vault, where she contrib-

records. Stoklos came to UAA in 1985 and proceeded to build a solid and tal-ented team that has had three national champi-ons, 12 All-Americans and 37 Academic All-Americans. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gym-nasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of stu-dent-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a gymnastics coach as an undergraduate and grad assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years, helping to bring a fledgling program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at the University of Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981 and a master’s degree in exercise science in 1984. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol. He also enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos lives in Anchorage with his girlfriend, Kim Glover, and their three canine companions, Sam, a terrier mix, and German shepherds Buck and Mora. He is also a member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

The only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage

has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 25th season in 2009. Over the past six seasons, Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I, and boosted

the team’s talent to its highest level ever. In fact, the 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004. The 2005 Seawolves set six school records, including dual-meet winning percentage, and produced four USAG All-America certificates as Stoklos captured his second consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year award. The previous season, the Seawolves won six USAG All-America certificates - including two individual national titles - and broke 16 school

2008 SEASON REVIEW / SEAWOLF FACILITIES

SEAwOLF FACILITIES

U AA hosts its home meets

on campus in the 1,250-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf gymnastics, bas-ketball and vol-leyball since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans.

Seawolf gymnasts also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. The Seawolves train off-campus at the Anchorage Gymnastics Association facility in Midtown. UAA gymnastis have exclusive use of the AGA gym for proactice. The facility offers 12 compe-tition beams, four sets of uneven bars and two spring floors, as well as a loose foam pit for vaulting, tumbling and bars. The gym includes almost 23,000 square feet of training space.

2008 IN REVIEw

With its 4-10 dual record, the Seawolf

gymnastics team made a dramatic improve-ment from the previ-ous season and laid an extremely solid founda-tion for the future. UAA’s success was most evidenced on bars, where the team’s 47.694 season average was more than half a point better than the previous school record. The Seawolves also set a school mark for vault average (47.665). UAA’s 192.825 at the MPSF Championships in Davis, Calif., was the second-best meet total in school history, although the team was barely edged for second place by Seattle Pacific. Senior Jessica Portlock earned All-MPSF honors on vault, bars and floor as she closed out one of the finest careers in program history

DR. STEvE COBBDirectorofAthletics–UniversityofAlaskaAnchorage

In eight seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprec-edented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but Dr. Cobb has also set the foundation for future success in several ways. The 2007-08 campaign saw UAA enjoy one of the most memorable

seasons in school history, highlighted by Final Four appearances for both Seawolf basketball teams. With the concurrent NCAA Tournament runs, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinal round. In 2006-07, seven of UAA’s 11 sports qualified teams or individuals for NCAA Championships play, including a 15th place finish for the Seawolf men’s cross country team at nationals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gymnasium floor and the con-struction of a new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. In 2001, Dr. Cobb was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame. He has also been instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volley-ball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference cham-pionships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addi-tion, black bears, grizzly bears, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, dall sheep and bald eagles all make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a past-time to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third largest state park in the United States and offers a vari-ety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife view-ing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and pro-tection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the win-

Alaska is the largest state in the union - one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second larg-

est state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of Lakes, boasting more than 10,000 lakes, Alaska has more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. Alaska is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wild-life viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.
