cga educational foundation scholarship recipients

This year, a record 263 scholarships totaling $315,500 were awarded to deserving students attending college this fall.

Beginning with just one scholarship in 1998 – the $2,000 Don C. Beaver Scholarship – the Foundation’s program has blossomed to more than 250 scholarships including a $2,000 Hall of Achievement Scholarship and a $1,500 Convenience Store Scholarship. These scholarships are open to CGA member company employees and their dependents.

Legacy and Donor Scholarships are also available membership-wide. Legacy Scholarships are established to honor individuals or companies with a $1,000 college scholarship in their name. Each

Legacy Scholarship represents a long-term commitment of 10 years to our scholarship program. This year we are pleased to add three new Legacy scholarships to the program. Details on these can be found on page 41.

Member-funded Donor Scholarships include ten $1,000 Illuminator Educational Foundation Scholarships, four $500 Stanislaus County Grocers Association Scholarships, two $2,000 Classic Wines of California Scholarships, one $1,000 Larry Kranich Memorial Scholarship funded by Quik Stop Markets and one $1,000 Paul A. Hughes Memorial Scholarship funded by HOWS Markets.

Finally, the Foundation assists member companies with providing scholarships for their employees through the Piggyback Partner-ship Program. Employees of participating companies apply for CGAEF Scholarships and automatically become eligible for their company’s scholarships.

For more information on the scholarship program, contact Brianne Korte at [email protected] or (916) 448-3545.

The CGA Educational Foundation proudly recognizes three new Legacy Scholarship Donors: Bimbo Bakeries USA, Darioush Khaledi, and Gene and Peggy Yee. The Legacy Scholarship Program is designed to recognize and honor California’s grocery leaders for their many contributions. Under the program, donors commit a minimum of $10,000 to fund annual $1,000 scholarships in the honored individual’s name.

The retail industry has had a generous and tireless leader in Doug Detherage, Director of Customer Relations with Bimbo Bakeries USA. Detherage, of Rancho Mirage, first experienced working in the retail world as a grocery courtesy clerk at age 15. From there, he went on to enjoy a long and productive career in the bread industry. Over the years, he worked to develop strong relationships between suppliers and retailers through the Illuminators, the California Grocers Association, and the Food Industry Sales Managers Club. Detherage also has been an effective supporter of educational programs as a past CGA board member and through his service on CGA’s Educational Foundation Board.

One of California’s most successful independent grocery operators, Darioush Khaledi built his K.V. Mart chain in the Los Angeles area on the twin platforms of serving the community and creating a well-trained workforce. In that same spirit, Khaledi, Chairman and CEO of K.V. Mart, has worked as a leader in the industry to strengthen the business climate for retailers and advance educational opportunities for retailers and their families. Khaledi, a former chair of CGA, left his native Iran in 1976 to protest its dictatorship regime. Today, besides being a successful California retailer, Khaledi is the owner of Darioush Winery in Napa Valley, which produces world-renowned wines in a setting celebrating Persian culture.

Gene Yee’s experience and accomplishments in the grocery business have spanned more than half a century. Yee came to this country as a child from China, built his first grocery store in San Jose in 1948, which grew into Dick’s supermarket chain of 15 stores operating until 2001. Over the years, Yee did all he could to help new immigrants get started in the industry, as well. A longtime leader in the retail world, Yee’s generous spirit and commitment to the industry played out into notable achievements: He was Chairman of the California Grocers Association in 1974 and inducted into the Sales Managers Club’s Grocers Hall of Fame in 1997.
