From the Head of School Taking Steps Forward

As I write this letter, the last of the materials and supplies are arriving on campus for our newest building project that will ultimately provide a state-of-the-art Library Media Center for our Prep students. The vision of construction trucks rumbling on campus, while students peer through the protective fencing to see how the project is progressing, is a perfect example in defining the level of excitement and progress that exists at Gulliver Schools as we continue Taking Steps Forward.

In one word, it has been an impressive year – a year filled with emotion as we celebrated our many successes and wel-comed significant change. We kicked off the 2009-2010 school year with school wide enhancements from new technolo-gy to facility renovations to campus beautification. In January, we proudly unveiled our new state-of-the-art Aquatic Center at the Prep. We also rolled out several new logos and a modern Raider mascot, a change that was largely student driven.

Our students remain at the center of everything we do here at Gulliver Schools, and year after year, we are continuously amazed at all they are able to accomplish. Beginning with our youngest students and their dedicated teachers, giving back to our community is always a priority at our Academy and South Miami Campuses. Primary and Lower School students become involved in collection efforts and activities that help their neighbors and their school. They soon discover that there is indeed more joy in giving than in receiving. Collectively, in grades -12, students completed more than 60,000 hours of community service and more than $4,000 was raised to support the victims of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti $2,000 of which was contributions through a matching gift program by the Macquarie Group Foundation. Every year, our PreK through grade 8 student body are recognized for outstanding achievements in dance, visual arts, and physical fitness, just to name a few. This is all accomplished while upholding the highest academic standards in their classes.

This level of excellence is certainly maintained by our high school students. Our 2010 class was particularly notable, earning the following distinctions: four students were recognized as National Merit Scholars by their respective college or university; three students were recognized as National AP Scholars; seven students were recognized as National Hispanic Scholars; and three students received recognition with Silver Knight Awards, with one being a recipient and two earning honorable mentions. Our seniors also continued the tradition of 100 percent college acceptance, with more than $8 million dollars in scholarships awarded.

As you know, the doors of opportunity and discovery made available to students at Gulliver are enhanced through the generous gifts from our parents, alumni, staff, and friends. Every dollar raised goes directly toward our programs and ser-vices, supporting virtually every aspect of the Gulliver Schools experience. I’m honored to share with you our 2009-2010 Annual Report of Giving. I hope you enjoy learning more about Dollars at Work and reflecting on the strides we have made together. In many ways, our annual report represents the wonderful partnership Gulliver has with all of you: the parents, faculty and staff, alumni, and friends of our educational community. Thank you for working diligently to advance our efforts. Each and every one of you makes Gulliver the extraordinary place it is today.

– 11 –GULLIVER SCHOOLS 2009-2010 ANNUAL REPORT

From the Chairman, Board of Trustees & PresidentOn behalf of Gulliver Schools, it is my pleasure to present our fourth Annual Report of Giving. As demonstrated by the accomplishments of our students inside and outside of the classroom, the performance and recognition of our outstand-ing faculty, the enhancements to our campuses and physical plant, and the significant increase in philanthropic giving to Gulliver Schools, the 2009-2010 school year was truly remarkable.

This year’s Annual Report of Giving clearly illustrates the depth and breadth of commitment from all constituents of our community. Even more impressive is the fact that these metrics were achieved during the most challenging eco-nomic time in decades. With more than 2.7 million dollars raised, our Annual Giving reached record highs. We also exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $400,000 by nearly ten percent. Additionally, our Annual Giving participation was up by more than 10 percent overall, with the largest increase seen in faculty and staff Annual Fund participation, which jumped an amazing 12 percent! Again, this is an extraordinary achievement for a school that is still relatively young in its non-profit status.

We are robustly focused on ever-enhancing the quality of our academic programs and the offerings we provide our students. To that end, as part of our long-range strategic plan, we are developing new state-of-the-art facilities and campus improvements. There are many great things in store for Gulliver and the members of our school community that will enable us to continue providing the best possible educa-tion to the whole child, from PreK through 12th grade. The pending approval of a revised Master Plan for the Acad-emy campus and further enhancements planned for our Preparatory campus are important elements of the future for Gulliver.

These and other capital projects underway and recently completed are just some of the wonderful, demonstrable re-sults for Gulliver when we all come together. Our unwaver-ing commitment to you is that we will continue providing our students with the best possible learning environment, a dedi-cated faculty, and opportunities for engaged and informed parents and alumni. We will continue to raise the bar on the quality of academic, co-curricular and other educational pro-grams, on facility improvements across our campuses, and on enhancing the entire school experience for students, fac-ulty, parents and other members of the Gulliver community.

Our Head of School, John Krutulis, and his team have done an exceptional job across all aspects of the school’s learning environment and business operations. They have fostered a positive and inclusive climate geared toward ensuring ev-ery stakeholder – student, parent, faculty, and alumnus – un-derstands how important his or her respective role is to the school’s success. By providing great day-to-day leadership and working with the board of trustees toward a clear vision of where Gulliver is headed in this new decade, John and his team have ensured that we stay true to the values and principles laid out by our Director Emeritus, Marian Krutulis.

I continue to be honored to serve as president and chairman of the board of trustees of a school with an outstanding man-agement team, and whose faculty and staff are sincerely focused and committed to the fulfillment of our mission – to educate the whole child by ensuring an outstanding dynam-ic learning environment which recognizes and nurtures the unique talents and gifts of each student.

On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I thank you for be-ing an integral part of Gulliver’s success and its future.

Sincerely yours,

Jeffrey Bartel ‘84Chairman, Board of Trustees & President

Building Our Endowment An endowment is unique in that it establishes a permanent fund that provides perpetual, annual support for Gulliver Schools. Gulliver Schools is committed to building its endowment to help develop and ensure the school’s long-term financial security. As an endowment fund donor, you may decide to designate your gift to one of our established endowments or inquire about initiating a new one. As of June 0, 2010, the endowment totals $4,782,620.

Initiating a new endowment has a threshold amount of $2,000 which enables our benefactors to create a lasting legacy in their name or in the name of someone they wish to honor or memorialize. The initial gift of $2,000 or more will never be touched, and since it is invested, it will grow each year. Only interest income from the endow-ment will be used for the purpose you designate.

The new Aquatic Center, in honor of Director Emeritus Marian Krutulis, was unveiled during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Preparatory Campus. The new facility features a state-of-the-art 0 meter x 2 yard Olympic size pool with seating for 00 spectators, locker rooms, a workout and training room, and coaches’ offices.

During the ceremony, Village of Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner addressed attendees and John Krutu-lis, head of school, offering a special thank you to the many donors who made the Aquatic Center possible. Following an introduction by Senior Eric Tano, Aquatics Center Director James Sweeney highlighted Gulliver’s swimming and water polo program and introduced Gulliver seniors Trevor Reitz and Julianne Valdes, who shared with guests their experiences as Gulliver student-athletes. The event concluded with the ribbon cutting and inaugural lap.

Gulliver extends a special thank you to The Gintel Family Foundation, Inc. and Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo Sesana and The Sesana Family, our lead donors whose generous contributions were the catalyst for making this new center possible. For years to come, it will be filled with countless students and fans cheering the Raiders to victory.

Library Media Center Once complete, the new Library Media Center for the Preparatory Campus will be located near the administra-tive offices, adjacent to the Cafeteria. With an array of integrated media housed in a unique 12,000 square-foot complex, the Library Media Center will serve as a place for reading, research, study, preparation, production, and presentation.

The first floor of the two-story complex will encompass a student union area complete with a coffee bar that will serve as a venue for study hall, seating during lunch, larger lectures, meetings, and events. The majority of technol-ogy will be housed on the second floor. In addition to computer stations, the area will also have work tables with power and internet connectivity for laptops, as well as classroom space complete with SMART Board technology.

Gulliver extends its sincere appreciation to the many donors who made the vision of a new Library Media Center possible. A special thank you to The Fairholme Foundation and the Shah Family, our lead donors, whose gener-ous gifts were instrumental in making this dream a reality. Once open, it will quickly become an important part of student life, both academically and socially. Field DedicationThe football field at the Preparatory Campus was dedicated to the late Sean Taylor during a ceremony taking place on Friday, September 4, 2009, before the first football game of the season. The ceremony celebrated Sean’s life as a Gulliver Raider, a Miami Hurricane, and a Washington Redskin. The Taylor family was in attendance at the unveil-ing of the new scoreboard with Sean’s name and were gifted with a commemorative plaque in Sean’s honor.

A 2001 Gulliver Schools alumnus, Sean Taylor helped Gulliver win the Florida Class 2A State Championship in 2000, with a 14–1 re-cord. As a proud Raider, Sean was a star on both sides of the ball, playing running back, defensive back, and linebacker. In 2007, he was named to the Florida High School Association’s All-Century Team, which selected the top players in the 100 year history of high school football in the state of Florida.

2009-2010 ANNUAL REPORT

Technology Update The Technology Enhanced Classroom Initiative, commonly known as TECI, has been underway since January 2006. TECI equipment typi-cally consists of an interactive Board (SMART Board), ceiling projector, laptop, podium cart, DVD, VCR, document camera, and control box (box located on wall providing teacher ability to switch from one de-vice to another). Prior to placing the equipment, a classroom must be made “TECI Ready”. Some of our classrooms must have certain items upgraded prior to being able to install the TECI equipment.

Across campus, traditional dry erase boards are being traded in for this new state-of-the-art technology. Mounted on a wall, SMART Boards are interactive electronic whiteboards that utilize a data projector to display output from a computer. These boards are touch-sensitive so a user can write with a finger or stylus, enabling live onscreen manipu-lation in much of the same way as a computer touch screen feature works. Having these as a tool in the classroom allows teachers to incorporate audio, video, animation and interactive activities into their instruction and provides support for a diverse variety of student learn-ing styles. The SMART Board also allows them to utilize the wealth of resources available on the Internet for incorporation into lessons plans.

Today, nearly 10 classrooms have been upgraded with the new technology. The majority of TECI funding has been made possible by generous donations from parents, alumni and faculty, sponsorships from area businesses, fundraising events and activities, grant awards, as well as through allocated general operational dollars from the school, all of which are a true testament to the belief in the mission of Gulliver.

While we have made significant progress since 2006, there are cur-rently more than 0 classrooms across all campuses that need TECI in-stallations: one room at the Pinecrest Prep Campus; three rooms at the Pinecrest Middle Campus and, more than 10 at each of the Academy and Prep Campuses. Gulliver continues to rely on the generosity of our community of supporters to keep the momentum going, fulfilling the remaining needs and bringing technology to all Gulliver classrooms.

The Gulliver Bricks for the Future Campaign is designed to give you a unique opportunity to show your Raider pride. Each year, Gulliver invites its parents, faculty, and alumni to make their per-manent mark on campus through personalizing an engraved brick. We would like to thank the donors of the 2009-2010 Brick Campaign who purchased a brick to celebrate and honor a special time, person, or occasion in their life. These bricks become part of our beautiful atrium and breezeway areas that students see every time that they walk through campus.

Proceeds from the purchase of bricks support the Annual Fund. Annual Fund gifts go to work immediately, helping all students. Because these gifts are unrestricted, they can be used where they are needed most.

For more information or to place a brick order, visit our website at www.gulliverschools.org or contact the Office of Advancement at 786.709.4081 or e-mail [email protected].

2010 Signature Event Committee

On March 6, 2010, Gulliver Schools’ Academy Campus was in top décor while more than 0 parents, faculty, students, and guests gathered for an evening of traditional New Orleans fun. The school’s inaugural signature event, Night in New Orleans, raised funds for the Joseph A. Krutulis Memorial Endowment, which supports tuition as-sistance. The evening’s festivities began with a cocktail reception that featured Cajun-style fare and a silent auction. Guests strolled though “the streets of New Orleans” to enjoy live street-style performances in-cluding jazz sets, sidewalk chalk and caricature drawings, and theatre excerpts, from Gulliver Prep students.

After cocktails, guests were ushered to an elegant lawn side tent for the dinner program. Head of School John Krutulis welcomed everyone and introduced the Prep Performing Arts students for their final performance of the evening. Guests dined on traditional New Orleans-style cuisine, complete with gumbo and beignets, and later danced until the late evening hours.

The theme for this year’s Signature Event is Cruise the Night Away. The event will be held on March , 2011, at Gulliver Prep. For registration and sponsorship information, visit our website at www.gulliverschools.org, or contact the Office of Advancement at 786.709.4081 or e-mail [email protected].

Javier Rodriguez ‘98, our current head baseball coach, left the event with one of the biggest smiles of the day as he drove away in his new Cadillac, courtesy of Williamson Cadillac Hummer, with years of free lease payments after getting a “hole in one.” Over the last four years, the event has raised nearly $200,000. The event owes its success to the invaluable support of our alumni, past parents, current parents, faculty, sponsors, corporate partners, friends, and the school’s dedicated advancement team members.
