Mission

Inspired and guided by Gospel teachings and the principles and charisms of the Marists, Notre Dame Academy focuses on Christ as the foundation of human knowledge and prayerfully works to educate the developing child with a global perspective. “Knowledge set in the context of faith becomes wisdom and life vision.”

Dear Parents and Friends of Notre Dame Academy,

The past five years have been pivotal for building the foundation of Notre Dame Academy. In this time, we have created a learn-ing environment rich in knowledge, faith, and service. Our students have prospered from living our mission each day, “Knowl-edge set in the context of faith becomes wisdom and life vision.” Thank you for partnering with us to fulfill our mission.

I am proud of the distinguished Catholic school we have created together. In five short years we have expanded our Marist edu-cation to include the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) in Pre-K through 5th Grade. Our students have experienced exceptional, hands-on instruction based on units of inquiry for the lower school and high school preparatory block scheduled courses for the Middle School.

Through your continued generosity, we have enhanced the academic program by investing further in our faculty and technology. Last year, over 20 faculty members attended professional development conferences and workshops, bringing the fruits of their learning into the classrooms in areas such as math, reading, phonics, and Catholic faith. Implementing new and innovative instructional techniques keeps our faculty passionate about teaching and enables our individual and collective successes. One of the most measurable successes is the student performance on the CTP4. I am pleased to report that our 3rd through 8th Grade students continue to perform consistently above the national norms on the subtests (e.g., math, reading, writing, etc.)

Your generous and worthy sacrifices have also enabled Notre Dame Academy to enrich our learning environment by investing in Apple technology. With over 200 Apple devices (MacBooks, iPads, and iPod touches), our students will now have the tools to connect them to the global community by using technology for information access, problem solving, conceptual development, and critical thinking. I firmly believe that in today’s world, technology is an integral part of the work place, and in order to better prepare our students for the future, technology must become an integral part of the classroom.

Our strong tradition of service learning, with activities ranging from making blankets for children diagnosed with cancer at Chil-dren’s Healthcare of Atlanta AFLAC Center to providing school supplies and vitamins to children in Nicaragua through Amigos for Christ, has mutually-benefited 12 local, national, and international need-based organizations. Our students have learned the importance of giving at an early age, as well as the societal challenges that face each service partner. I am proud of the progress and impact we have made over the past five years with our Service Learning Program.

As we look to a new year, we reflect on the blessings of the past five years as inspiration for the future of Notre Dame Academy.

May God bless you for your generous support of our school, our programs, and our students.

Sincerely,

Debra M. Orr Head of School

Dear Parents and Friends of Notre Dame Academy,

On behalf of Notre Dame Academy’s Board of Trustees, I am pleased to present you with the 2009-2010 Annual Report as a tribute to our founding families and loyal supporters who have maintained a steadfast commitment to our school over the past five years. Their sacrificial generosity of time and treasure is a testimony to the strength of our institution that is grounded in the Catholic faith and guided by the Marist values.

As the father of two Notre Dame Academy alumni who are now students at Marist School in Atlanta, I feel blessed to be part of these remarkable school communities that embrace the Marist values of knowledge, faith, and service. In my role as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I continually witness the Marist value, “Make the school a family,” in all aspects at Notre Dame Academy. One of the hallmarks of our school community is our volunteers who serve countless hours on 28 School and Family Organization committees, Board of Trustee committees, and in the classrooms every day. Their passion and dedication define the “family” we have created at Notre Dame Academy.

As we celebrate five years of excellence, Notre Dame Academy is especially grateful to the following individuals:• David Schroeder, a school founder and the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees whose volunteer leadership and commitment have made a significant mark on the school’s vision

• 13 staff and faculty who recently celebrated five years of service, particularly Debra Orr, a school founder and Head of School whose administrative leadership and vision have created a dynamic educational and spiritual community: Cheryl Brown, Julia Derucki, Mercedes Fernandez, Barbara Findley, John Findley, Joan Janoszewski, Anne Mancini, Irene Nowicki, Sharon Orrick, Kathy Paryzek, Kelly Quinn, and Maria Rios

• Rev. David Musso, S.M., Marist School and Notre Dame Academy Chaplain who celebrates Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly at the school

• Local diocesan priests who also celebrate Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly at Notre Dame Academy

Thank you again for your loyal support. May we always be mindful of and grateful for God’s blessings and presence in our lives.

Sincerely,

Joseph P. GeorgeChairman, Board of Trustees

During this period of economic decline, Notre Dame Academy has exercised prudent cost controls while increasing financial aid

through its Tuition Assistance and Georgia GOAL Scholarship Programs to families facing financial hardship. In addition, the school has cautiously managed and reviewed its endowment funds. Despite the decreased value of its endowment funds, the funds continue to be excellent investments.

In its fifth year of operation, the school has maintained a balanced bud-get and achieved four of its five strategic goals. The remaining strategic goal is the expansion of its campus, which has been re-evaluated in light of the economy. With the recent settlement of the school’s land-related lawsuit against the City of Suwanee, Notre Dame Academy’s Buildings and Grounds Committee is working diligently to formulate an expansion plan on the current premises.

The financial report represents the efforts of dedicated people work-ing hard for the benefit of the students. While we are proud to report positive fiscal numbers for the 2009-2010 school year, Notre Dame Academy recognizes that this would not have been possible without the ongoing, generous support of its community. Gifts to the Annual Fund, special programs, and parent-led initiatives augmented operations to help maintain a reasonable tuition and fee schedule.

A Special Thanks ... to the Notre Dame Academy Board of Trustees, Board committee members, faculty and staff, volunteers, and all other constituents who worked to make the most of every dollar spent.

Consistent with the strategic plan, Notre Dame Academy revamped its financial model last year to set tuition at near-cost levels. The traditional 15% gap

between tuition and operating expenses was eliminated. While the school’s Board of Trustees focused on sustaining a lean budget, donations to the Annual Fund and other fund initiatives continued to be as vital as ever to support and enrich technology, academic excellence, and other non-budgeted operating expenses.

Under the guidance of the Advancement Office and Advancement Committee, the Notre Dame Academy Community and supporters rallied despite the downturn in the economy to exceed its $300,000 Annual Fund goal with 100% board, staff, and faculty participation, and 75% parent participation. Notre Dame Academy is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mannion, parent chairs of the 2009-2010 Annual Fund, for their leadership and dedication, as well as to the countless parent volun-teers who worked tirelessly on this successful campaign.

The proceeds from the 2009-2010 Annual Fund enabled the school to:

• Acquire over 200 Apple technology devices for teachers and students

• Tile the lobby and the outer perimeter of the Assembly Room of the Elementary and Middle School

• Install new carpet in the Assembly Room, lobby of the Early Years Campus, and numerous classrooms and offices

• Purchase academic resources including a Scantron machine and forms, a kiln, and “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum materials

• Provide professional development opportunities to staff and faculty to enrich the academic program

A Special Thanks ... to Mr. and Mrs. Sean Lynch for donating their Atlanta Falcons’ Executive Box for

a raffle and the sale proceeds of Sugar Plum Kids’ merchandise to the school.

Ways to Give

35

There are many ways to participate in the Notre Dame Community and to contribute needed resources that are vital to the success of Notre Dame Academy and its students.VOLUNTEERISMVolunteer support builds a sense of community and allows Notre Dame Academy to enhance a family’s experience with us throughout the year. Some of the many opportunities include participating in class and school-wide events and celebrations. Many companies will now consider volun-teer hours for a matching gift. Please check with your company’s Human Resources personnel for more information.

DIRECT CONTRIBUTIONSGifts by check or cash are highly effective in enhancing the school, and they offer benefits to the donor and may be deductible on federal income tax returns. Each donor should consult with a tax advisor appropriate for his or her individual circumstances. Many donors prefer to pay by credit card on our website to take advantage of various credit card promotions, frequent flyer miles, and other reward programs. We accept, American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

GIFTS-IN-KINDNon-cash gifts which can benefit our school and students are always ap-preciated.

SECURITIESWe are grateful for gifts of appreciated securities.

MATCHING GIFTSMany companies offer matching gift programs which can double the im-pact of your contribution. Information about a company’s matching gift policies is typically available through the company’s Human Resources Office or internal website.

Notre Dame Academy is an independent, Marist-sponsored, Catholic and IB World School serving Pre-K3 through 8th Grade. Our 450 students are educated in SMART Board classrooms in a nurturing, hands-on environment. Students and teachers use Apple technol-ogy devices including MacBooks, iPads, and iPod touches with daily curriculum.

The goal of Notre Dame Academy is to integrate the Gospel into the context of academic content. As such, the academic curriculum is of the highest standards and prepares students to thrive in an in-creasingly global society. Full-time students receive age-appropriate Catholic instruction, art, music, Spanish, computer science, daily physical education, and recess. In addition, all students partner with local non-profit organizations to perform service projects and to pursue studies of specific societal problems related to the service partners’ challenges.

Notre Dame Academy is run by an independent board of trustees. The school is accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Southern Association of Independent Schools and is listed in The Official Catholic Directory, thereby receiving its 501(c)(3).

The 2009-2010 Annual Report is published by the Advancement Office of Notre Dame Academy to express gratitude to those who have given to our community during the 2009-2010 fiscal year (ending June 30, 2010.) In preparing this report, every effort has been made to ensure its accuracy. Please accept our sincere apologies if there are corrections to be made, and notify Anne Mancini at [email protected].
