“FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Happy Halloween October 2009

Welcome back to all the snowbirds. We

missed all of you and we hope you are

ready to begin your return and enjoy the

beautiful Florida weather. Being October

already, most northern residents are already

back here in Southfork. You will see some

changes, new neighbors, old neighbors

gone, more houses for sale.

The summer was extremely hot and humid

but the pool was put to good use and was

packed daily. Now the season is ready to

start with all of you back and again,

welcome back!

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is upon us and so far we

here in Dade City have not encountered

any bad weather.

Do not let this put you in the (it won’t hit

us mood) because the season lasts until

Always be on alert and listen to the weather

newsletters can be viewed in color on the web site at www.floridacommunities.com. (click on Southfork at bottom of

_____________________________________________________________

How to Stay Young

1. Throw out non-essential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors

worry about them. That is why you pay “them.”

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let

the brain idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” And the devil’s name is

Alzheimer’s.

4. Enjoy simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve and move on. The only person, who is with us our

entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music,

plants hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond

what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take quilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign

country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at least every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our

breath away.

from the Association President

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Many of our “snow birds” are returning and more are soon to be here! Please welcome them………….

In 2009 I will have been here physically, for 9 months…..During June, July and August, I received and sent more

than 300 e-mails and also made many phone calls doing my duties as President and was kept abreast of all the

happenings here in Southfork.

Year round residents, Tony Trubiano-Vice President, Phyllis Grossi-Treasurer, Jim Morvatz-Director, kept Aggie

Mitchell-Secretary/Activities Coordinator and I informed almost daily the well being of all Southfork residents.

Marti Witham-Director and Larry Ruffner-Director are also year round residents. Should there have been a real

emergency…..(Five members), a majority of the Board, were here to take immediate steps.

There were only 3 concerns brought to the Boards attention and we responded within hours and are continuing to

resolve those issues which two of those issues are with management.

If you have questions or concerns, please stop in to see me, or give me a call. We are all adults and if you not happy

with something, let’s talk about it. Things can only get better if we communicate with each other.

Looking forward to making the balance of 2009 even better!!!

Dot Cady, President

Labor Day Picnic Because of the high temperatures and high humidity and the possibility of afternoon showers, the activity committee

decided to have the picnic at 5:30pm with the option of eating inside or out!

We were hoping for cooler temperatures for our cooks who did a fantastic and wonderful job. THANK YOU

AGAIN, Jim Morvatz, Jim Pelltier, Bob Downs and Frank Albers.

The reason it was called a “picnic” was the menu: Hamburgers, Hot Dogs. Salad, Chips and Dessert. My face is

RED…..I did not anticipate the much larger quantity of salad needed. I APOLOGIZE!!!!!!!

Attempting to do something “new” we decided that the Association would provide the picnic food and charge $2 for

members and $4 for non members to give out door prizes. 80 people signed up (we were very happy about that)

allowing $160 for the door prizes.

Eight $20 gift certificates from Publix’s, Sweet Bay, Winn Dixie, Walmart, Sonny’s, Golden Corral, Village Inn and

I-Hop were won by, Sandy Kendall, Shirley Tiratto, Betty LaForest, Peggy Lare, Delores Cady, Shirley Garner,

Mary Bolin and Tom McComb. Ernest Cady won the 50/50 . (P.S Ernest & Delores Cady are not related to me.)

MANY THANKS TO: Bobbi Gillis, Marielle Quain, Pat & Phyllis Grossi, Carol Albers, Colombe Remick and Mary

Bolin for all of their help. Thanks to all who put the club house back in order and the “good fairy” who put

everything away in the kitchen before I got back there to do it!

Dot Cady

From orm’s desk

It sure has been a hot and wet summer but September 22nd was the first day of Fall.

Aren’t you glad that we don’t have to look forward to ice and snow and don’t have to

think about shoveling or long underwear.

Please be reminded that I cannot address a problem until I know it exists. Please feel free

to call me or come by my office. My door is open and if I am not in you can call my cell

phone @205-4080 or the office as I forward the office phone if I have to go out and

Sandy is not there. Thank you for your cooperation and consideration.

I have not taken a vacation this year due to my health but may take a little time later if

things improve, both health wise and business wise.

We have now started virtual tours of our re-sales on line but so far I don’t see an increase

in activity.

Please remember your lot rent is due on the first of the month and is past due on the 5th.

Thank you for your promptness.

Why you should clean your rain gutters

Have you ever taken a look at the gutters on your home? This is indeed an important part of maintaining your home,

especially in these regions where rain and other weather conditions result in a great deal of fallen debris and large trees

hanging over the roof.

Over time, organic muck builds up in rain gutters, creating a prime growing area for all kinds of things. Some gutters

can become so built up with debris that small trees and ferns actually take root in the gutter muck. Gutter‘s should be

cleaned at least twice a year for this reason. Ignoring the task can create numerous problems, such as rotted fascia

boards, water damage to the sides and roof of your home and even foundation problems and fading color of the sides of

your home.

If you do have trees or shrubs near your home, keep them well-trimmed. Damaged or collapsed gutters lead to more

accumulation of gutter muck, which in turn leads to even more severe problems.

Cleaning gutters can be very dangerous and time consuming. PLEASE, when using a ladder be very careful and make

sure to use safety precautions and have someone available in case that you fall.

One easy method for all of us seniors is to use a water hose to remove the leaves. All you need to do is turn up the

water pressure on the spout and get an attachment that can concentrate the water and then you just spray it on the

leaves to forcefully move them. On a hot day this could be fun and the water coming back can keep you cool. (smile)

“My Special Friend Bill”

I’ll see you in the morning sun, I’ll look for you when evening’s done.

I’ll hear your laughter thru the day.

I’ll miss the times we worked and played, the jokes we shared will always be,

A time of joy , the tears will cease.

I’ll keep the wonderful things you made , I’ll cherish one and all.

The one we always laugh about, is still hanging on my bathroom wall.

I will not say, “Good bye ole friend,”

For we shall meet, yet once again.

Until that time, ole friend, of mine, I’ll watch for you at evening time.

Together, we will laugh and say,

“Hello ole friend, how was your day?

In honor of a very special friend, Bill Glatfelter.

“May the Angels be waiting to open the gates , make way, make way,”

“The Mayor has arrived.” Just follow us, your chariot awaits.

We will, all of us remember you,

Willie Stoever

Aspirin @ Bedtime

1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night. The reason: aspirin has a 24-

hour “half-life”. Therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the aspirin

would be strongest in your system.

About Heart Attacks: There are other symptoms of a heart attack besides the pain down the left

side of the arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of

sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

,OTE: There may be no pain in the chest during a heart attack. The majority of people (about

60%) who have had a heart attack during their sleep, did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the

chest pain may wake you up from a deep sleep.

If that happens, IMMEDIATELY, dissolve 2 aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of

water.

Call “911” and state “Heart Attack” and that 2 aspirins have been taken.

Take a seat on a chair or sofa and wait for their arrival and ……….DO ,OT LIE DOW,!!!

(I received this via email from approximately 4 people and thought everyone should be aware of this.

These tips may save your life. )

THIS GIVES US SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

WITH ALL OUR NEW ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY.

GPS

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. SOMETHING TO CONSIDER IF YOU HA VE A GPS - DON'T PUT YOUR HOME ADDRESS IN IT. PUT A NEARB Y ADDRESS (LIKE A STORE OR GAS STATION) SO YOU CAN STILL FIND YOUR WAY HOME IF YOU NEED TO, BUT NO ONE ELSE WOULD KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE IF YOUR GPS WERE STOLEN.

CELL PHONES

/ never thought of this...... This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet etc, was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our pin number and I replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:

DO NOT DISCLOSE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CONTACT LIST. AVOID USING NAMES LIKE HOME, HONEY, HUBBY, SWEETHEART, DAD, MOM, ETC. AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, WHEN SENSITIVE INFO IS BEING ASKED THROUGH TEXTS, CONFIRM BY CALLING BACK. ALSO, WHEN YOU'RE SENT A TEXT BY FRIENDS OR FAMILY TO MEET THEM SOMEWHERE, BE SURE TO CALL BACK TO CONFIRM THAT THE MESSAGE CAME FROM THEM. IF YOU DON'T REACH THEM, BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT GOING PLACES TO MEET 'FAMILY AND FRIENDS' WHO TEXT YOU.

*PLEASE PASS THIS ON*

I never had much thought about the above before but as of now,

no longer have 'home' listed on my cell.

Page 11: 2009-10_Southfork_Newsletter_Color

Important notice

Recently one of our residents, after leaving the doctors office, discovered that she had left her purse in the

waiting room. When she returned to the doctor’s office, discovered that her purse was stolen.

When she arrived home she then contacted a credit card company to report the card lost and was amazed

that charges had already been made to the stolen card.

As a caution: write down the name of the card (i.e. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, etc.), your account

number on the face of the card and the 3 or 4 digit security code number usually on the back of the card.

Then write down the toll-free phone number on the company that issued the card to you and file this

information in a place where you can find it if you ever experience the same problem. You should do the

same with other documents in your purse or wallet (i.e. drivers license, social security card etc.)

_____________________________________________________________________________________

COFFEE HOUR

There is a Monday morning coffee hour each week starting at 8am to 9am. There is always coffee

brewing which is free to all residents and we do have donuts for those who are a little hungry and

with a small charge of $.50 each for each donut. What a good way to meet some of your neighbors

and start your week.

The men are usually talking about the latest sport event on TV or some current political news item

that is causing a stir in the world. (There is so much discussion that the world problems could be

solved right here in Southfork by our locals.) (smile) On the other hand the women are always

talking about the latest happenings right here in our own community.

Just sitting at one of our tables of residents you can learn a lot about what is going here in Southfork

and the surrounding community.

There is no agenda or speakers and just a chance for our community to come together. Bring your

smile and wit and we’ll furnish your coffee free.

We would love to get to know all of our new residents and the others that have been in hibernation

lately. Come join us on Monday’s!!!!

night of (maybe) luck and listen to all the complainers who do not win. You will hear

Metro Crime Prevention

Metro Crime Prevention will give a crime prevention seminar on November 2nd, at 9a.m. in the clubhouse.

Topics for discussion will include:

Break ins, ID Theft, Car Jacking, Purse Snatching, Rape and Fraud.

It is extremely important that we all make ourselves aware of proper crime prevention and what to do if a

particular crime is committed on your person or property.

This seminar should last about 45 minutes depending on how many questions come up for discussion.

I hope to see you all there.

Annual Fall Carport Sale

Start to clean out your closets, sheds etc. in preparation of the Fall carport sale.

It will be held on Saturday, November 14th, from 8am to 12 noon. For the first time there

will be coffee and donuts available and a bake sale in the clubhouse.

There is always a lot of traffic through the park on this day so be prepared to make a little

cash with all of your items.

Page 13: 2009-10_Southfork_Newsletter_Color

Bunco Night

Monthly BUNCO night will start on Sunday, Oct 18th

at 6:30pm and every 3rd

Sunday of the month thereafter.

This is a dice game and something everyone can learn in 5 min. We will have someone to show all how to play the

game and each person will get a copy of scoring etc. There must be multiples of 4 people for each table played.

For each game played (at least 3 games), the losers from each table will move to the next table and have a

different partner for the next game. The winners stay at the same table but change seats for each game not

having the same partner. We will need alternates in cases of someone not being able to play, so if you are

interested in being an alternate please let us know that also.

There will be a $3.00 charge per person and 7 prizes given out by the end of the evening and the more people that

play, the more the prizes will increase. Based on 12 people at $3.00 each we will pay out cash prizes such as:

Most Bunco’s $10.00

Most Points $6.00

Most Wins $5.00

Most Losses $3.00 (we never gave out prizes for a loss before)

Traveling Dice $5.00 (last person holding the fuzzy dice)

Most mini Bunco’s $5.00

Draw of name of no wins, losses etc. $2.00 (people who have won nothing)

Everyone will have a chance to win something whether they lose or win. There should be a lot of laughter, fun

and good friendship with an evening such as this. The traveling fuzzy dice will be the hit of the evening and the

person getting a Bunco receives this until the next person gets a Bunco and the last person holding the fuzzy dice

gets a prize. It is tossed from table to table………….

This game of BUNCO is played all across the USA in many communities and is played by all ages.

On this Bunco night we will ask the players for some finger food to be brought in (such as chips & dip, cookies etc.)

so we can enjoy and be a little festive. Every one brings their own refreshment drinks. So plan on a fun evening

and look for the sign up sheet on the bulletin board at the clubhouse. We need to know how many will be

attending so that we have enough tables set up. So instead of a boring Sunday evening, come and join us all for

some fun.

Any questions, please contact, Phyllis Grossi, 567-6105.
