FACILITIES

Originally constructed in 1939 and renovated in 1989, McAlister Field House serves as the home of The Citadel’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs.

The facility, which also houses the athletic department’s administrative offices along with locker rooms for the basketball and baseball teams, has a seating capacity of 6,000.

When built in 1939, the facility was referred to as “The Citadel Armory,” and seated 4,500 for basketball games.

In 2001, The Citadel annexed a women’s facility onto McAlister Field House. The women’s wing is home to offices and locker rooms for the women’s volleyball and soccer teams.

Top to bottom, McAlister Field House is one of the top basketball, volleyball and wrestling arenas in the region for both participants and fans. Even though 6,000 fans can pack into McAlister Field House for a basketball game, no fan is further than 24 rows away from the court. In addition, concession stands and restroom facilities are located on both the first and second floors.

With the seats pulled back, there are three full-size basketball

and volleyball courts for practice. During inclement weather, The Citadel’s baseball, football, tennis and track teams use the facility.

In January of 1998, 2002 and 2005, The Citadel and McAlister Field House hosted the annual All-Academy Wrestling Championships. In 2008, the facility host the Southern Conference Wrestling Championships.

McAlister Field House has also hosted such entertainment acts as Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, Bob Hope, Kenny Rogers and Patti LaBelle. Events that have utilized the multi-purpose building include WCW Wrestling, Charleston Cup Gymnastics Championships, Special Olympics, Moja Arts Festival Activities, Rotary/Red Cross Roundball High School Basketball Classic and assorted high school and college graduation ceremonies.

The floor was repainted during the summer of 2008 and exhibits the new Southern Conference logo and “Spike,” the logo of The Citadel athletics.

The wrestling team will be competeing on a mat dedicated to the late Brian Ruff Jr., a former Bulldog wrestler. One of the largest mats in the region, it provides ample space for the Cadet graplers to keep wrestling on the edge.

Coaches’ offices, locker rooms and the Bulldogs’ wrestling room are all located in Vandiver Hall. Vandiver Hall was built in 1991 and is a multipurpose athletic complex. Displayed on the walls of the wrestling room are names of former Bulldog wrestlers and the honors they received. The soccer, track and field, golf and cross country team locker rooms and offices are also located in Vandiver Hall.

Rob Hjerling, the 2004 Southern Conference Coach of the Year and a 1994 graduate of American University, enters his 11th season as head coach of The Citadel’s wrestling program.

Hjerling has an overall record of 77-78-4 and a combined 47-33-1 over the last six seasons. After going 2-11-2 and 1-4 in the SoCon (fifth of six) his first season, Hjerling boosted the Bulldogs to 13-3 and 5-0 in the SoCon (first of six) in 2004.

In 2009, The Citadel turned the corner, posting a 9-6-1 dual meet record and a 3-2 SoCon record. The Bull-dogs defeated VMI, Appalachian State and Davidson in conference play and participated in several nation-ally recognized tournaments. The Bulldogs placed fourth at the Southern Conference championships held at McAlister Field House and featured seven individual placers, including freshman Odie Delaney who captured the 197-pound weight class title. Delaney became the second true freshman at The Citadel to qualify for the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

The Bulldogs made strides in 2008, besting their record from the two previous seasons along with bringing in a top recruiting class. The Citadel secured big conference wins against VMI and Davidson. Hjerling led the Bulldogs to some of the most prestigious tournaments in college wrestling today, affording the young team the opportunity to gain valuable experience competing against the nation’s top competition. The team placed fourth in the Southern Conference Championships with six individual placers.

In 2007, the Bulldogs had a nationally ranked athlete in Travis Piccard, who was invited to the All-Star Classic. The Citadel was led by experience and future prospects. The Bulldog lineup ran the gamut from true fresh-men to redshirt seniors. This was a transition year for the team as the gained experience and grew stronger as cadet-student-athletes. The squad placed fourth at the Southern Conference Tournament with six placers.

Hjerling guided the 2006 squad to a historical season as Dan Thompson became the first All-American wres-tler in Bulldog history by placing seventh at 165 pounds at the NCAA Championships. Thompson also won the Southern Conference Championship at 165 pounds and six other Bulldogs placed to help The Citadel to a third place finish in the conference. Sean Markey joined Thompson at the NCAA Championships at 141 pounds after earning an at-large bid by finishing second in the SoCon and being named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year.

The 2005, the squad placed second in SoCon and sent three wrestlers to the NCAA tournament to mark the sixth time in six seasons that the Bulldogs sent wrestlers to the National Championships and the fifth season with multiple qualifiers. They also had five other wrestlers earn spots on the podium.

In 2004, the Bulldogs matched their highest ever winning percentage with a record of 13-3 (.813) on their way to the school’s first SoCon wrestling championship since 1967. Hjerling’s grapplers included four in-dividual conference champions in Ryan McClester (125), Dan Thompson (157), Keith Clifton (174) and Billy

Linane (HWT), all earning automatic bids to the NCAA Championship, while Sean Markey (133) earned one of the leagues at-large bids to bring the total number of Bulldogs in the NCAA’s to five. McClester

HEAD COACHwas named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year.

Hjerling directed the third place 2003 squad to the highest winning percentage, .813, in school history. The Hjerling-led group saw two members, Keith Clif-ton (184) and Billy Linane (HWT), win SoCon champi-onships, while six others grappled to finish in the top three in the SoCon. With two conference champs and three runners-up, the Bulldogs sent four members of the 2003 team to the NCAA championships in Kansas City.

The 2003 squad also saw two grapplers make their way into the national rankings. The 133-pound Sean Markey finished the season ranked as high as 18th nationally by The Wrestling Mall, while 149-pound Travis Piccard saw his name make it to 19th late in the season by the same publication. The Bulldogs finished that season with a mark of 13-3.

In 2002, the Bulldogs entered numerous tournaments with NCAA powerhouses and also wrestled dual meets versus Top 25 teams. Hjerling led The Citadel to scoring the most points since the SoCon’s 1967 Championship Team and best dual meet record since 1991 at 10-7. The Bulldogs had seven conference placers, five finalists, one SoCon champion and one NCAA qualifier.

In 2001, there were six conference placers, two conference finalists, one SoCon champion and two NCAA qualifiers. The team was ranked 16th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25.

During his first season (‘99-‘00) he had four conference placers, one conference finalist and one NCAA quali-fier. The level of competition drastically increased with Hjerling at the helm. The team managed to go 5-15 and 2-3 SoCon (fourth of six). Hjerling came to The Citadel after spending the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at George Mason Uni-versity, where he helped the Patriots to a runner-up finish in the Colonial Athletic Association while coaching four NCAA qualifiers. Following Hjerling’s departure, George Mason had one of their best seasons yet, show-ing the superb recruiting that had been done during Hjerling’s time there.

He spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Hjerling coached five NCAA qual-ifiers during those two seasons. He got his start in coaching at Manheim Township High School in Lancaster, Pa., spending the 1995-96 campaign as an assistant coach. As a senior at American University, Hjerling posted a 28-4 overall record. In addition, the Lancaster, Pa., na-tive captured the Colonial Athletic Association’s 158-pound weight class championship, garnered CAA Most Outstanding Wrestler honors and earned a berth in the NCAA Championships. He completed his wrestling career with 69 victories. Hjerling is married to the former Megan Hoban of Cleveland, Ohio. The couple has two sons, Séamus and Liam.

Jeff Ragan, a former All-American at Oklahoma State, is in his 10th season as an assistant head wrestling coach at The Citadel and enters his first season as associate head coach.

Under the assistance of Ragan, the Bulldogs crowned their first All-American in Dan Thompson, and have stood at the top of the Southern Conference podium. Ragan brings the technical knowledge and skill to the practice room on a daily basis as he helps train the Bulldogs’ smaller weights.

Ragan has helped the Bulldogs excel on the mat and in the classroom. As a professor and as a coach, he aides the team in turning out high quality cadet-student-athletes at The Citadel.

Ragan graduated from Oklahoma State in May of 2000 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. A four-year letterman in wrestling, Ragan was a member of three Big XII Conference championship teams while posting an overall record of 101-43. As a senior, the Englewood, Fla., native won 31 matches and cap-tured the Big XII Conference individual crown in the 125-pound weight class and finished sixth at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.

A four-time Big XII All-Academic Team selection, Ragan was named the Oklahoma State Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Year in 2000 and was tabbed to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic All-America team. In addi-tion, he became the 19th wrestler in Oklahoma State history to register over 100 career victories.

Ragan also was a four-time freestyle All-American. In 1998 he captured a Freestyle Espior National Champion title and became a Junior World Team member, where he placed in the top 10.

As a prep star, Ragan posted a 103-5 overall record at Lem-on Bay High School, making three finalist appearances and winning a pair of Florida state championships, while earning Outstanding Wrestler honors as a junior and senior.

Ragan finished graduate school at The Citadel in December of 2002 and also works as an adjunct professor in The Cita-del’s mathematics department. He is married to the former Andrea Denise Clark. The couple has a daughter, Allie, and a son, Jacob.

Plamen Paskalev is in his first year as an assistant with the Bulldogs. He spent the 2007-2008 school year as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Central Missouri.

Paskalev is from Sofia, Bulgaria. He is a 12-time Bulgarian national champion, a three-time world team member, and a two-time Olympian. At the World Championships, he is a seven-time placer finishing seventh ('99), 11th ('94, '95, '98) and 12th ('97). He was fourth in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and 16th at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

He concluded his career in 2006 by becoming the first wrestler in UCM history to have a perfect record, fin-ishing the season 18-0 and winning a national title. Paskalev became the fourth Central Missouri wrestler to win a national title and was the first to win one since 1991. He was a three time All-American at Central Mis-souri, finishing fourth at heavyweight in 2003, third at 197 in 2005 before winning it all in 2006. Paskalev has the highest winning percentage in school history for the Mules, winning 64 of his 69 matches (.928).

Evan Sola enters his third year as an assistant wrestling coach. The two-time All-American and three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Champion joined The Citadel staff after finishing his undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina.

A leader on the UNC wrestling squad, Sola finished his career with a record of 117-32, tying for fourth in program history in the all-time wins category. Sola’s name can also be found in the all-time pins category as he won 27 matches by fall, placing him ninth. The former 133-pound wrestler was honored twice as the ACC Wrestler of the Year and once as the ACC Championship Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The Wernersville, Pa. native graduated from Conrad Weiser High School with the third all-time highest win record in state history, posting a 160-7 record. During his collegiate tenure, Sola was a four-time ACC final-ist and four-time NCAA qualifier earning All-American honors twice. He was the recipient of the Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time Award at the 2005 NCAA Championship with three falls in 6:11. Sola proved to be a dedicated student-athlete while at UNC earning All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team honors while in the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Sola is currently pursuing his master’s degree in counseling at The Citadel Graduate College.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate ath-letic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origina-tion.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.

The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the South-east and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spar-tanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Membership HistoryOn Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mis-sissippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee.

Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929.

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the an-nual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appa-lachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdraw-ing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including

Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee.

The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Confer-ence included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which be-gan play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greens-boro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

LeadershipJohn Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Iamarino has promoted the Southern Conference through an ambitious agenda which has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, launched the conference’s Hall of Fame and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions.

The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference.

Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league of-fice from Charlotte, N.C., to Asheville, N.C.

Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current conference logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corpo-rate partners.

Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C., to Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts.

Championship HistoryThe first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tourna-ment remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to in-clude women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success.

The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The 2008-2009 season saw the Bulldogs finish the seasoson with a 9-6-1 overall record and a third place regular season finish in the Southern Conference. The Southern Conference Tournament, host-ed by the Bulldogs in McAlister Field House, saw The Citadel finish fourth with seven placers and one champion.

Freshman Odie Delaney went 5-0 in So-Con dual action, earning the number one seed in the SoCon Championships. He won the 197-pound weight class in the tournament and earned the first trip to the NCAA Championships for a true freshman in The Citadel’s history. The Destin, Fla. native led the team with 25 wins and 14 pins en route to a successful opening campaign.

The Citadel tallied 55.5 team points to claim fourth at the SoCon Champion-ships in Charleston. Junior Tyler Sim and redshirt freshman J.C. Oddo both took second place in the 125 and 174-pound

weight classes, respectively. Senior heavyweight Aaron Brown took home third place and freshman Richard Alarcon (133), sophomore Derek Sickel (165) and freshman Kelby Smith (184) earned fourth place honors.

A youthful Bulldog squad that featured only one senior of their 10 starters was challenged with early tournaments at the The Citadel Open, the Navy Classic, the Penn State Open, the Reno Tournament of Champions and the Southern Scuffle. The dual meet schedule also presented challenges with

nationally ranked ACC champion Virginia Tech along with Ohio and George Mason. Early hurdles tested the Bulldogs and allowed them to come on strong late in the season as they would take third place at the All-Academy Championships at VMI. The Bulldogs scored seven placers including Tyler Sim who became the eighth Bulldog to claim a title in the event. It also prepared The Citadel for SoCon play as they would down VMI, Appalachian State and Davidson to fin-ish third in the conference, the first time they placed third since the 2005-2006 season. The Cadets finished the season winning eight of their final 10 dual meets.

2008-2009 RECAPTyler Sim produced a solid season earn-ing the number one seed in the South-ern Conference Championships after a 4-1 record in the SoCon. He also won his weight class at the All-Academy Cham-pionships in Lexington, Va. and recorded an overall record of 20-14.

J.C. Oddo and Richard Alarcon were pleasant surprises in their freshmen sea-sons. Oddo finished second at the SoCon Championships and at the All-Academy Championships and was second on the team and in the Southern Conference with 11 pins. Alarcon rallied to take fourth at the SoCon Championships. He also placed fourth at the Penn State Open and had the third most victories on the team with 22.

Heavyweight senior Aaron Brown, sophomore Derek Sickel (165) and Kelby Smith (184) rounded out the placers for The Citadel at the SoCon Championships. Brown finished his Bulldog career going 3-1 in SoCon dual action with a major decision and three pins to go along with the three seed in the SoCon Championships.

The Bulldogs led the SoCon in pins by a large margin with a total of 73. Odie Delaney (14), J.C. Oddo (11), Derek Sickel (10) and Keith Koziel (10) were the top four in the league in pins. The Citadel ranked second in total number of team wins, individual wins and technical falls.

The Citadel took home serveral awards last season. Tyler Sim (125) and Odie Delaney (197) were named to the All-Conference Team in their respective weight classes. Richard Alarcon (133), J.C. Oddo (174) and Delaney (197) were all named to the All-Freshmen SoCon team. The Bulldogs were honored with three Wrestler of the Week awards in the last four weeks of the season as Keith Koziel (week eight), Tyler Sim (week nine) and Odie Delaney (week 11) took home the accolades.

The 2009-2010 season looks bright for the Bulldogs who re-turn only one senior starter and add experience and depth to a competitive squad. Eighteen newcomers will be chal-lenged right away as the Bulldogs plan another rigorous schedule highlighted by hosting The Citadel Open to start the season.

Senior Dan Thompson became The Citadel’s first All-Americanwrestlerondaytwoofthe2006NCAAWrestlingChampionshipsattheFordCenteronMarch17.

At165pounds,Thompsonstartedthedayinthequarterfinalswhere he faced Oklahoma State’s second-seeded JohnyHendricks.Hendrickscameawaywitha9-6decisiontogivetheBulldoghisfirstlossofthetournament.Thompsondroppeddowntotheconsolationfifthroundwherehedefeatedninth-seededMichaelPoetafromIllinois,7-6.ThevictoryoverPoetamovedThompson into thefinaleightandsecuredhisAll-Americanstatus.Thompsonthenmovedontotheconsolationsixthroundwherehefacedhisfirstnon-seededopponentinEdinboro’sDeontePenn.TheBulldogendeduponthewrongendofanearcradleandwaspinnedinthefirstround.ThelossmovedThompsonintotheseventh-placematchwherehewouldfacefellowAll-AmericanEricLuedkeofIowa.

ThompsonearnedtheNo.7spotat165poundswithan8-3decisionoverIowa’sEricLuedke.LuedkeopenedthematchwithatakedownbutThompsonescapedtotrail2-1afteroneframe.ThompsondefferedthechoiceinthesecondroundtoLuedkewhochosetostartonbottom.Luedkeescapedtogaina3-1lead,butThompsonsoonscoredatakedowntoeventhematchat3-3.Thompsonchosethedefensivepositiontostartthethirdperiod.TheBulldogescapedtogaina4-3leadwithjustoveraminuteremaining.With20secondsleftinthematchLuedkeattemptedashotbutThompsoncounteredtoscoreatakedownandaddtwobackpointsastimeexpired.Thompson’seffortwasimpressiveenoughtoillicitastandingovationfromtheFordCentercrowdofover15,000.

SUPPORT STAFF

Ben Waring enters his first year as Assistant Media Relations Director at The Citadel. He will serve as the primary contact for wres-tling and baseball and the secondary contact for football.

Waring joined the Bulldog staff in August after earning a master of science in edu-cation degree with an emphasis in sport management from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. While with the Monarchs, he served as a graduate assistant in the sports information office working with baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer and wrestling.

Prior to working at Old Dominion, Waring completed an internship with Stanford as an event manager in the athletics department in Palo Alto, Calif. Waring is a 2008 graduate of the University of South Carolina where he earned a bachelor of science degree in sport and entertainment management. While a student with the Gamecocks, he worked in game management and operations. He was also a baseball operations intern with the Columbia Blowfish in 2006.

Waring was born in Germany and moved around to several cities growing up as his father spent 27 years in the U.S. Army.

Ben currently resides on James Island.

Blair Wagner is entering his third year with the Bulldogs Strength & Conditioning Staff.

Wagner directly serves the basketball and wrestling programs, while assisting with football and baseball at The Citadel.

He was first appointed in December 2007 after spending the fall with the College of Charleston in a similar position. While with the Cougars, he was responsible for the men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and wom-en’s swimming and track and field teams. In addition, he assisted with men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.

In October 2007, Wagner had the privilege of training the New York Knicks during their preseason camp in Charleston.

Prior to arriving in Charleston, Wagner spent a short time as a volunteer strength coach at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Wag-ner attended the University of Wyoming and obtained his bachelor’s degree in exercise science while working primarily with the UW Football and Strength & Conditioning programs. Blair is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and sports performance coach certified through United States Weightlifting Association.

Wagner, a native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is currently pursuing his master’s degree in ex-ercise science with The Citadel Graduate Col-lege and expects to graduate in May 2010.

Blair currently resides on James Island.

David McBurney enters first year with the Bulldogs Athletic Training staff. He will be working directly with the wrestling team and will assist with the football team.

McBurney comes to The Citadel after spending a year as the trainer for the men’s soccer team at UNC Charlotte. Prior the joining the 49ers, he was a PRN Athletic Trainer with the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. He graduated from Ap-palachian State University in May of 2008 with a bachelor’s degree of science in athletic training with a minor in health promotion. While with the Mountaineers, David worked as an athletic training student for three years.

McBurney’s certifications include: NATABOC Certi-fied Athletic Trainer, American Red Cross CPR Certi-fication and Member of the National Athletic Train-ers Association (NATA).

McBurney, a native of Lenoir, N.C. is currently pur-suing a master’s degree of science in health exer-cise and sport science from The Citadel Graduate College.

The Citadel President Lt Gen John W. Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three var-sity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force.

A command fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange officer flying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general.

Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has flown the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jag-uar aircraft, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130.

On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (‘03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

The Citadel’s President Lt Gen John W. Rosa, Jr. named Larry Leckonby as the 11th athletics director at the South Carolina Military College in a press conference held at the Altman Athletics Center in June 2008. Leckonby of-ficially joined the Bulldog Family in July.

Prior to The Citadel, Leckonby spent six years as a senior associate athletic director at the University of Mary-land. Hired as the athletic department’s Chief Financial Officer in September 2002, he managed the depart-ment’s annual $51.2 million operating budget, capital projects and long-range financial forecasting.

In addition, Leckonby was the sport supervisor for women’s basketball, assisted the Athletic Director with men’s basketball and football, and supervised the athletic business office, athletic ticket office and information technology. He was also responsible for coordinating departmental construction projects, which have included expansions to the Gossett Football Team House, new grass and field turf practice fields and the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. He also served on several campus committees including the University Finance Com-mittee and the University Facilities Advisory Committee.

Prior to accepting the position at Maryland, Leckonby served as the senior associate director of athletics at the University of Houston, appointed in January 1998. He was responsible for the daily administration of the department and specific areas of duty involving finance, planning, fund-raising and marketing. He also served as interim athletics director for six months in 2001 and 2002.

Leckonby also worked as the associate AD for business affairs at Boston College for four-and-a-half years (1993-98), and the assistant AD for finance and operations at Old Dominion University for five years (1988-93). He was the ticket manager and assistant business manager at Boston University from 1982 to 1988, after begin-ning his athletics business career at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) where he was an administrative assistant to the business manager beginning in 1981.

A former lacrosse player at Duke University, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in management science in 1979. He earned a master’s degree in sport management from Massachusetts in 1983.

Leckonby is an active member of the College Athletic Business Managers Association. While serving on numer-ous finance and planning committees during his career, he also has helped direct several NCAA and conference championships including NCAA Baseball Super Regional events in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

Leckonby and his wife, Cris, have two daughters, Hunter and Katie, and a son, Liam.
