Yet we are currently examining everyaspect of our business model for possiblereinvention. In this, our 56th year, we have
undertaken our first-ever, network-widestrategic planning initiative, with
implications for our programs, our national/affiliate interaction, and
our governance.
Why contemplate fixing something that isn’t broken?
Because the environment – from theschool system to federal guidelines to
American society to global competition –is changing so fast, so fundamentally, that
we risk irrelevance if we don’t keeppushing to be ahead of the curve.
At its root, the challenge Young Audiencesfaces is analogous to the one confronting
our educational system and our entirecountry. We are living in what the author
Thomas Friedman calls an increasingly flatworld. By that he means a world in whichhundreds of millions of people in placeslike China and India are able to competebecause of a rising middle class, moreprevalent education and instantaneous
Internet communication.
Young Audiences, measured by virtually anycriterion, is a remarkably successful enterprise. The largest organization in the arts-in-education
field, its 31 affiliates provide nearly 87,000programs to 7,000,000 children each year.
4
Chuck Vest, the former president of MIT,said recently, “The United States is stillthe most innovative nation on the planet, but we can only maintain that lead if weinvest in the people, the research thatenable it.” He went on to say, “Innovationis where creative thinking and practicalknow-how meet to do new things in newways and old things in new ways.”
At Young Audiences, we believe that wecan and must teach the creative thinkingthat is so crucial to fashioning a future ofinnovation for our children and our nation.
And it is by integrating the arts into oureducational system — in essence, byinstituting a culture of creativity — thatwe can do it.
In previous years we have discussed inthese pages the views that the arts areintrinsically valuable in their own right, or instrumentally valuable as a means ofteaching curricula. Like MIT’s Mr. Vest,best-selling business author Daniel Pinkoffers another compelling perspective:
The flat world is overflowing with students who cando the routine work of production, and do it muchmore cheaply than Americans can. How can ouryoung people and, by extension, our nation succeedin such an environment? The answer is throughcreativity and innovation. Our hope, our future lies in our being able to create the next new thing (think Internet, iPod and Google). Innovation is our competitive advantage.
7
“The arts are the antithesis of routine.
And what concerns me is that we have an
education system, particularly at the
elementary and secondary level, that is
being geared toward routines, right
answers, and standardization at
precisely the moment that
routine work spells demise.”
It is through pervasive exposure to the
arts that we will give our children a leg
up on achieving meaningful, successful
lives in a thriving, creative society.
This is why we are committed to providing
arts-enriched programs in, before and
after school; in libraries, camps,
community centers; programs for the
whole family as well as students.
In the next few pages, we give some
examples of how Young Audiences is
attempting to foster and nurture a culture
of creativity in the education of our
children and in our organization.
“There’s this methodology about math and sciencethat seems like kind of a routine, unartistic ability,
but the best mathematicians, the best scientists, thebest technologists, the best inventors make these
bold, artistic leaps of imagination.”

67,073One of our signature programs for cultivating creativethinking is Arts for Learning Lessons©, a ground-breaking supplemental literacy program that blends thecreativity and discipline of the arts with learning scienceto raise student achievement in reading and writing.
Based on the work of learning scientist
Dr. John Bransford, this program was initially
designed for use by grade 3-5 classroom
teachers, and is now being delivered by
Young Audiences and collaborating teachers
in grades 6-8 and grades 1-2, supporting
whole school participation and coordination
across grades.
In A4L Lessons, students work back and
forth in an integrated manner between
literacy instruction and arts-based activities,
strengthening their creative and critical
thinking skills while building and using
higher-level literacy capabilities that
align with state and local standards.
This year, to further strengthen literacy
learning while engaging students in the arts,
Young Audiences designed and implemented
text-based A4L Residencies, delivered by
trained teaching artists in cooperation
with the classroom teacher.
Residencies are either aligned with the A4L
Units for grades 1-8, or inspired by the Emmy
award-winning PBS series BETWEEN THE
LIONS® created by WGBH and Sirius
Thinking, Ltd., for children ages 4-7 (pre-K to
grade 2). Field tests of BETWEEN THE LIONS
Residencies in Oregon, Las Vegas, and New
Orleans began in December 2007 and
continued through spring 2008.

YOUNG AUDIENCES PROVIDED 3,244 TEACHERS’ SERVICES:
3,244As we did last year, Young Audiences again
commissioned independent studies by WestEd toassess the learning impact of Arts for LearningUnits. These studies reconfirmed that studentsexperiencing A4L Lessons showed a consistent
pattern of statistically significant improvement onliteracy assessments related to state and local
standards; significantly greater literacy learningthan comparison groups receiving only their
standard literacy curriculum; and markedly greaterinterest and engagement in A4L Lessons than in
their regular literacy curriculum.
We anticipate continued growth of Arts
for Learning in 2008-09, and expect to
at least double the number of Arts for
Learning Lessons and Residencies
delivered by the end of the year.
The Units also are being implemented in
after-school and summer programs.
Additional independent evaluations of
A4L will be forthcoming in 2008-09.

Another major success for Young Audiences thisyear has been the burgeoning popularity of theMetLife Dance for Life residencies. This year, 17 affiliates involved thousands of students in the program’s goal of inspiring young people toexperience the joy and physical benefits of dance. In addition, several affiliates have linked Dance forLife to areas of the core curriculum, includingintegration with the Arts for Learning program.Learn more about this and other Young Audiencesprograms in the Letter from the Chairman and in the Affiliate Highlights section.

4,666Finally, as we mentioned above, Young Audiences has
been deeply involved in the process of pursuingcreative reinvention within our organization. It began
last year when we engaged the consulting firm of WolfBrown to survey our network. WolfBrowninterviewed National board members, affiliate
executive directors and board members, and YoungAudiences constituents to generate its
findings in a Use and Needs Study.
This report provides the basis for a long-
term strategic plan being prepared by the
Boston consulting firm TDC. Once again,
all the many interests and constituencies
in Young Audiences are contributing their
perspectives on what changes we need to
make to accomplish our mission in a
rapidly changing environment.
This is being accomplished through
in-person meetings at this year’s national
conferences, at regularly scheduled
committee meetings, via in-depth
interviews by phone, by establishing
a real-time blog open to the
Young Audiences network, and by special
affiliate and National Board retreats
devoted to key issues.
16
6,955YOUNG AUDIENCES REACHED
6,955 SCHOOLS:
Among the issues being studied:
> The balance between performance-demonstrations and workshops/residencies;
> The pursuit of more after-school, summer school or even adult art programs versus in-school programs;
> The relative merits of different growth models, such as merging with other organizations or instituting a national certification for artists;
> Implications for programming in expected changes to No Child Left Behind and a greater emphasis on creativity;
> New approaches to fund raising, marketing and other revenue streams.
TDC will help us hypothesize several
strategies that address our work and
these issues. Then we will test those
hypotheses both within and outside the
network. Based on how these strategies
resonate with our affiliates and our
constituents (teachers, educators, artists,
funders, and patrons), we will develop a
strategic plan for evolving Young
Audiences’ mission and programs.

7,000,000YOUNG AUDIENCES REACHED
7,000,000 CHILDREN:
This process is both exciting and daunting. It is not comfortable to question the way we dothings or to contemplate far-reaching changes. But that is precisely the artistic, as well as the
truly scientific, way forward. “Innovation iswhere creative thinking and practical know-how
meet to do new things in new ways and oldthings in new ways,” said MIT’s Chuck Vest.
We will continue to question, probe, test, and innovate, for our success and for the success of the children who depend on us.
2120
It has been our privilege to continue serving Young Audiences Arts for Learning in its 56th
year. In 2008, seven million children across the country benefited from arts-in-education
programs that unlock their creative and inventive abilities and teach them how to
think conceptually.
The breadth and excellence of Young Audiences’ work shows in this year’s programmatic
accomplishments.
Heading the list is the success of Arts for Learning Lessons and Residencies, a literacy
program that enhances reading and writing skills in grades K-8 through the integration of
the arts into classroom lessons. A more detailed description of this program is given on
pages 8-11. Altogether, more than 5,400 students in 14 school districts across the
country received Arts for Learning Units or Residencies. The 11 affiliates participating
in the Lessons in the 2007-08 school year are: Indiana, Louisiana, Miami, New Jersey,
Northeast Texas, Northern California, Oregon, Rochester, San Diego, Virginia, and Wichita,
Kansas. Additionally, there was a pilot site in Las Vegas.
The success of Arts for Learning Lessons is backed by the unprecedented support Young
Audiences has received from The Starr Foundation. This spring, The Starr Foundation awarded
Young Audiences the largest grant in our history: $2.25 million to support Arts for Learning
Lessons and Residencies for the next 18 months. We thank The Starr Foundation for this
generous gift and its unwavering support for this groundbreaking project.
Associated with the development of Arts for Learning Lessons is the BETWEEN THE
LIONS® program, inaugurated this year with residencies involving about 570 students in
New Orleans, Las Vegas, and Portland, Oregon. BETWEEN THE LIONS Residencies provide
a supplemental literacy program for students in grades K-2, developed in collaboration
with the highly acclaimed, PBS television series “BETWEEN THE LIONS.”
This year Young Audiences affiliates had phenomenal success in enlisting school support
and the participation of thousands of students in the MetLife Dance for Life Residencies.
Participating in the third year of this program were 17 affiliates in Colorado, Houston,
Indiana, Kansas City, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Northern California,
Northeast Ohio, Northeast Texas, Oregon, Rochester, San Diego, St. Louis, Virginia and
Western New York.
Brooks ThomasChairman
In 2007-08 Young Audiences’ commitment to increase students’ knowledge and
engagement in the classical arts continued through the Classical Initiative project.
Six national grants were awarded this year to affiliates in Indiana, New Jersey, Northeast
Texas, Virginia, Northeast Ohio and Rochester. In addition to increasing the number
and caliber of classical programs presented to youngsters, the Classical Initiative also
promotes partnerships with schools and other community cultural organizations.
This year also was marked by several other important developments:
Thanks to the support of our affiliates, we drafted a new Affiliation Agreement that
reinforces the links between the National organization and all Young Audiences affiliates.
This Agreement, which replaces the document last amended in 1979, is intended to
advance the common arts-in-education goals of the organization.
Hand-in-hand with the Affiliation Agreement, we also embarked on an intensive planning
process through a comprehensive Use and Needs Study of the Young Audiences network
and the National organization. This study will enable us to form a solid base for Young
Audiences Arts for Learning as it moves into a more complex and meaningful
program of service to American education.
By providing innovative and high-quality arts-in-education programs for nearly six decades,
Young Audiences Arts for Learning continues to gain the respect and support of our
constituents, funders, the media, other arts educators and the general public.
Our organization is making an important investment in the cultural future of our country,
and drawing on the best artist educators available today to do it. The beneficiaries, of
course, are today’s youngsters and tomorrow’s citizens. On behalf of the National YA
board and staff, we would like to thank all those who have made Young Audiences’
aspirations a reality.

we developed after-school
residencies in dance and
photography for middle school
students. We received a grant
from the Connecticut
Commission on Culture and
Tourism to start a family
learning program with the
Lutz Children’s Museum in
Manchester. In cooperation
with the state arts
commission, we helped plan a
statewide forum for Careers
in the Arts for persons with
disabilities. YACT, which is
also a VSA arts affiliate, had
a national winner in the
All Kids Can Create program
sponsored by CVS
Caremark Foundation.
Eastern Pennsylvania
Our organization has
undergone a comprehensive
restructuring over the last
year and a half, and in May
we welcomed a new executive
director, Aileen McCulloch. We
also developed a new program
called ARTS FOR PEACE to
address the rising violence in
schools served by YAEP. The
aim of program is to provide
art as a tool for students and
educators to express their
feelings in productive,
non-violent ways.
Houston
Our programs increased to
1,902 from 1,712 and reached
over 335,000 children and
1,800 teachers at a price
of $2.25 per person. Our
professional teaching artists
presented a rich variety of
performances, workshops,
residencies and professional
development programs in
more schools and community
venues—306 sites compared
to 248 last year. In addition,
we continued our strong
partnership programs with
Houston’s leading charter
schools, hospitals, at-risk
centers and libraries.
Indiana
In celebration of the 20th
anniversary of our Summer
Arts for Youth (SAY) program,
we held our first gallery
exhibition to showcase
youth artwork. SAY was a
semifinalist for the Summer
Learning Center’s Excellence
in Summer Learning award.
The greatest honor for SAY
was receiving the 2008
Coming Up Taller Award from
the President’s Committee on
Arts & Humanities. This award
recognizes outstanding
community arts programs
that celebrate the creativity
of America's youth, providing
them learning opportunities
and chances to contribute to
their communities.
Kansas City, MO
Our In-School and Arts

Our Community School of
the Arts, offering after-school
instruction in the arts,
increased enrollments 30%,
to 1,348. Partnering with
the Greater Kansas City
Community Foundation and
Affiliated Trusts, we provided
financial assistance to 43% of
these students. We received
a $279,000 grant from the
Francis Family Foundation to
assist us in expanding Arts
Partners over the next three
years to three new school
districts.
Kern County, CA
We have been providing
arts-in-education programs
to 260 public and private
schools throughout Kern
County since 1970. Young
Audiences professional artists
give students an opportunity
to participate in an extensive
range of multi-cultural and
multi-disciplinary programs
and workshops. This year,
we have added new ensembles
to our roster and redesigned
our program catalog to
reach more teachers
and administrators.
Louisiana
A $200,000 grant from
the State Department of
Education funded a Truancy
Prevention Program for 12
schools in the Recovery
School District. Our new
performance series, School
Is Cool, focused on the value
of education and the need
for students to improve
attendance and punctuality.
A family program was also
developed to make parents
aware of the importance of
consistent school attendance.
Maryland
We partnered with over 400
schools and community-based
organizations to present 3,128
arts experiences to 204,000
young people, educators, and
families. These services
included 917 performances,
1,820 residency workshops,
and 307 training sessions for
artists and educators. Raising
more than $200,000 in
restricted grants allowed us to
deeply discount 44 percent of
these services to underserved
populations. We also secured
our first national grant from
the Dana Foundation to
expand the scope and services
of our newest initiative, The
Teaching Artist Institute.
Massachusetts
Our artist educators increased
programming 10% with nearly
1,300 in-school performances
and over 900 events out of
school time this year. The
out-of-school events were a
new growth area, a result of
contracting with Boston After
School and Beyond. We were
in over 400 sites, including
schools, hospitals and libraries.
The Young Artists series
concluded a fifth successful
year. This summer we
provided programming for
urban youth on one of the
harbor islands.
Minnesota
Founded in 1963, Young
Audiences of Minnesota has a
long history of bringing arts
experiences to the youth of
Minnesota and surrounding
states. We work with teachers
and schools to develop
collaborative, multi-disciplinary
and multi-cultural programs,
workshops and residencies for
elementary and secondary
school students. Selected
roster artists also offer
professional development
sessions designed to share
skills and arts activities that
enhance and enrich the
teaching methods of
classroom educators.

New Jersey
In the first year of our
collaboration with the New
Jersey State Museum we
provided 57 family and
school events, including two
Family Festivals. YANJ, in
partnership with several arts
education organizations, was
instrumental in designing
and conducting the first arts
education conference in New
Jersey’s history. “Charting
the Course,” featuring Sir
Ken Robinson, was attended
by 300 teaching artists,
educators and representatives
from major arts organizations.
Our new Adopt-A-School
program – which connects
businesses with underserved
schools – raised $62,900 to
support arts programming
in five of Trenton’s
public schools.
New York
Young Audiences New York
reached over 200,000
students and 180 schools. We
teamed up with the Noguchi
Museum and the Museum of
Arts & Design for visual arts
residencies and with the Sony
Wonder Technology Lab for an
after-school stop-motion
animation residency for high
school students. In addition
to these programming
collaborations, we began a
professional development
partnership with the
Community Word Project
one of the country's leading
professional development
organizations.
North Texas, A Division
of Big Thought
Our newest project, Thriving
Minds, formerly the Dallas
Arts Learning Initiative,
coordinates and manages
Dallas’ resources into a system
to surround children with
creative learning in school, out
of school and in communities.
Our partners include the City
of Dallas, Dallas ISD and over
60 community organizations.
As a result, the Dallas ISD
School Board has awarded
Big Thought a contract to
assume management of
before- and after-school and
summer enrichment programs
for approximately half of
Dallas ISD elementary
and middle schools.
Northeast Ohio
Our new five-year strategic
plan includes goals to increase
both our financial strength
and public support for the
arts, and to reach more
children in outlying Northeast
Ohio counties. We hosted our
fourth ArtWorks, a unique
summer job training program
in the arts for over 80
students. The apprentices
created art, hosted public
performances and exhibits,
and learned transferable job
skills. The ICARE program has
been redesigned as Art Is
Education, a model of whole
school arts integration for the
Cleveland Metropolitan School
District, beginning with eight
schools this fall.
Northeast Texas
The number of students
participating in our programs
rose to 59,000 from 19,000
in 2006. We participated in
Arts for Learning Lessons,
a program that enhances
reading and writing skills in
grades 3-6 through integration
of the arts into classroom
lessons. We also piloted a
successful year-long
dance residency for 40
economically-disadvantaged
middle school students.
A grant from MetLife will
enable us to offer this
program to a second
middle school in 2009.
Northern California
We serve students, teachers,
and families throughout the
region, from Monterey
to Mendocino, from San
Francisco to the Central Valley.
This year, we continued to
build on our four-decade
tradition of partnering with
schools and community sites
to offer educationally sound
and artistically excellent arts-
education programs. Our
roster of over 100 professional
artists and ensembles
represents a diverse range
of art forms and cultural
traditions.
Oregon and SW Washington
We were one of three Young
Audiences sites selected to
pilot the new BETWEEN THE
LIONS® artist residencies.
During the residencies,
students learned about and
made art as they participated
in music, dance, visual art
and drama programs that
systematically reinforced
and extended their literacy
learning. Five hundred guests
attended our Mad Hot
Ballroom gala, which raised
$140,000. Twenty-four
thousand students from
100 schools participated in
the annual Run for the Arts
jog-a-thon, raising more than
$770,00 for arts-in-education
programs in their schools.
Rochester
Our 140 teaching artists
provided 825 performances,
2,565 workshops, and 144
residencies for 73,000
students in 211 schools.
The MetLife Dance for Life
performance and residency
project reached over 2,600
students. New York State
Council on the Arts and the
Wayne County Community
Fund supported a partnership
with the Newark, NY rural
school district to develop a
district-wide, arts-in-education
plan. We partnered with the
New York State Alliance for
Arts Education and Monroe
#1 BOCES to sponsor
“Broadening the Circle,” a
workshop exploring arts
learning for students
with special needs.
San Diego
Our roster artists reached
54,000 students with 7,004
arts programs. We expanded
our district-wide programs in
National City and San Ysidro,
provided new residencies in
East County, and continued
South Bay Union’s after-school
programs at 12 sites. The
free Family Arts & Literacy
Connection series partnership
with The Salvation Army Kroc
Center served scores of
families and provided
classroom workshops for
nearby schools. We partnered
with San Diego Unified and
Rowan Elementary to
introduce the Arts for
Learning Lessons literacy
program to all six grades
at Rowan.
Santa Cruz County, AZ
Our The Arts…Bringing Life
To Learning project included
assembly programs, classroom
workshops, multi-day artist-in-
residence programs and
outreach programs for Santa
Cruz County pre-school
through 12th grade students
and educator professional
development workshops.
For a second year, we brought
electric violinist Mark Wood
to Nogales to work with 200
middle and high school string
and choir students. The
“Electrify Your Strings”
residency culminated in an
exhilarating community
event for over 600 people.
Southeast Texas
Although our Live at the
Library project was originally
aimed at preschoolers,
children have kept coming
back to participate as they
aged, thereby broadening
the scope and reach of
the program naturally.
Consequently, this year we
expanded Live at the Library
to include after-school and
summer reading programs.
Offerings like these enable us
to provide a vital link to the
arts for many children and
rural families in and around
Beaumont.

MANAGEMENT’S DISCUSSION OF YOUNG AUDIENCES, INC. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
Young Audiences’ FY 2008 financial statements reflect the organization’s sound financialhealth and its long-standing commitment to provide the highest quality programs andservices to YA affiliates while maintaining low administrative and fund-raising expenses.Expenses for Affiliate Program Services were 86 percent of YAI expenses overall;administrative and fund-raising expenses were 8 percent and 6 percent respectively.
Several items are worth noting. First, current accounting standards require that the full value of multi-year grants must be included as revenue in the fiscal year that grantnotifications are made. However, substantial expenses for carrying out these grants maynot be recorded in YAI’s financial statements until the year in which they are expended.
In FY ’08 YAI received a grant of $2.25 million from The Starr Foundation in support ofArts for Learning Lessons and Residencies. While the full value of the grant was recordedin FY ’08 financial statements, significant expenses for the project will not be incurredand recorded until FY ’09.
A review of Young Audiences, Inc. annual reports over several years reveals that similargrants resulted in deficits in some years which were offset by surpluses in other years. In each of these instances, the organization’s annual operating income and expenses on a cash basis was balanced, with neither a significant operating surplus nor a substantialoperating deficit occurring.
In addition, this year the below average performance in the marketable securities portionof the YAI Endowment Fund, resulted in a substantial loss in the end-of-year net assets of the organization.
If you would like additional information about YAI’s financial condition or the accountingrules which determine how multi-year revenues and expenses are recorded and verified, please contact the Young Audiences, Inc. national office.

this year after 14 years of
service. We thank Alayne
for her leadership and
dedication to Young
Audiences and our mission
to bring arts-in-education
programs to schoolchildren
in Missoula and rural
areas of Western Montana.
Western New York
Our teaching artists
conducted residencies that
tied a variety of arts into the
core curriculum for every
student from pre-K to grade 12
in Holley School District. The
Buffalo Teacher Center funded
residencies for 4th graders
about the Erie Canal, and
“Alphabet Awareness; The
Phonics Program” for the
youngest learners in 26 City
of Buffalo schools. In May,
we held our second annual
conference, “Arts Abilities:
A Vision for Inclusion,” for
and about arts integration for
special needs populations.
Woodruff Arts Center,
Atlanta
YAWAC conducted
approximately 4,000
programs in 51 Georgia
counties and two neighboring
states. Our residency
programs, Share the World
and smART stART, were
repeated with great success.
SHOWCASE 2007, which was
held at WAC, was featured
on the local Fox affiliate’s
morning TV show. In
collaboration with the
other WAC divisions, YAWAC
began planning TA101, an
initiative created to prepare
new and emerging teaching
artists. We hosted the 2008
Young Audiences National
Conference to rave reviews
and record attendance.
