About the Registered Remodelor’s Council

In 1976 the Home Builders As-sociation of Louisville (HBAL) founded the Remodelor’s Council in order to strengthen the aware-ness of professional remodelers and to raise the image of the pro-fession as a whole.

As Registered Remodelors must meet stringent requirements that set them apart from the average re-modeler, clients can take heart in

knowing that when they hire a Reg-istered Remodelor they are working with a professional that is striving to be better than the rest. As we head into the new century remod-eling will be on the upswing. The new owners of this Indian Hills home wanted to update their already large

kitchen and family room area. David Westfall gutted the existing kitchen,

providing all new flooring, carpentry, wiring, plumbing and paint to make

way for a design by Pete Stone of Stone Kitchens. New installation included

custom cabinets, granite counter tops and high end stainless steel appliances,

including a GE Advantium oven, professional grade gas range, two islands,

two dishwashers and two sinks—perfect for preparing gourmet meals. The

kitchen also features an unusual narrow hammered copper sink with wood

counter top, providing a touch of country.

In the adjoining family room area Westfall replaced a fireplace mantle, and

added bookcases, painted cabinets, crown molding and chair rails.

With the help of remodeler Michael Cadden, the owners of this St. Matthews area

home have transformed a simple ranch into a two-story showplace. Promaster

completely gutted the original interior and added a second floor, a large kitchen/

family room at the back of the house, and a garage.

In addition to the exciting visible changes to the house, there is an important, less

visible one—a geothermal energy system that uses the temperature of the ground

to heat and cool the house by means of water lines drilled some 200 feet into the

ground. The all-electric system, which requires no exterior air conditioning units,

will cut the owners’ utility bills by 30 to 40 percent, and Cadden says the installation

cost will be recovered in six to eight years. New insulated glass windows and doors

and foam insulation add to this renovated home’s energy efficiency.

And the owners can enjoy their spacious, eco-friendly home in style. The

large kitchen, which opens to the family room area, features inset door cabinetry,

stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, built-in bookcases, and a bar area

with a wine cooler and glass door cabinets. There are hardwood floors throughout

the home, a blend of the original and new flooring. The family room opens to the

rear yard and a side covered deck space that is used for grilling, and there is a mud

room off the kitchen with built-in cubbies.

On the new second floor, the master suite features a bath with basket weave

tile, marble countertops, a multi-head shower and whirlpool tub. The entire house

has been wired for home audio and plasma TVs, giving the owners room to grow

and the opportunity to relax and have fun while doing so.

beside a new in-ground pool. Remodeler Ben Tyler tore out and re-built the

master bath on the main floor, and constructed the tiki room on the level below.

The new master bath and closet are more than double the size of the previous

space. The bathroom features an unusual sweeping granite ledge beside the sleek

tub that becomes a seat in the frameless shower. There is also a 7 foot wide wood

vanity cabinet with raised sink in the center, and contemporary finishes on all of

the fixtures.

The tiki room below features sliding glass doors, seated counter space, a tile

floor, a mini-kitchen with refrigerator and ice-maker, and a full bath for comfort

and convenience at the pool.

The new owners of this early 20th century two-story Crescent Hill home

wanted to expand and update the house for their young family. Remodeler

Stephen Shackelford opened up the kitchen with a columned archway that

leads to a breakfast nook and family room that’s now a perfect space for en-

tertaining. The kitchen designed by Marvin Stich features an oak hardwood

floor, granite countertops, updated appliances including a gas cook top, a

mahogany-topped breakfast bar, and custom built cabinets that nearly reach

the 11-foot ceiling and are painted white and green, in keeping with the period

style of the house.

New double doors from the breakfast nook lead to the deck, with

additional exterior doors on either side of the family room fireplace. The deck was

expanded, with new steps and a landing as well as a mud room with custom

cabinets which was added next to the kitchen. Shackelford built an additional

deck and railing system above the front porch, accessible from the new master

suite on the second floor.

The new master bath features a tile floor and large walk-in shower with

multiple heads, and large master closets, another bathroom and a laundry room

were also added upstairs.

When this century old two-story frame house in the Highlands nearly burned

to the ground in 2006, remodeler Kiel Thomson was one of those who assured

the owners as well as Louisville officials that the structure could be not only

be saved but fully restored.

After reinforcing the basic structure, Thomson tore the house down to the

studs and began to re-build in keeping with the home’s original style, but with

an eco-friendly approach, using salvaged and energy efficient materials. The

result is essentially a 100-year-old house that is even more efficient than many

of today’s brand new homes.

The house features hardwood floors, tile and granite bathrooms, and a

unique three-floor solid oak staircase that is completely open from top to

bottom, with views from each landing and a newel post salvaged from Joe Ley

Antiques. Granite countertops grace the all-new kitchen.

Having moved back into the house just 11 months after the devastating fire,

the owners are thrilled to be living once again in this unique Louisville home

where they raised their children.

not to scale. maps do not show all surrounding streets.

This 1929 Cherokee Triangle Georgian revival home has had only three owners

in its history. The third and current owners called on Todd Stengel to lovingly

restore the residence with the goal to preserve the integrity of the original design

of Joseph and Joseph, Louisville’s oldest architectural firm.

Aluminum siding that was installed by previous owners was removed,

revealing lost architectural details. After researching local archives, Stengel

reproduced and reinstalled the original dental blocks. The wood was cleaned and

repainted. All windows were re-glazed, and cracked glass was replaced with wavy

glass for an authentic look. Cypress shutters were custom milled to replicate the

originals. Exterior masonry and iron were refurbished. Tile roof was repaired, and

built in copper guttering was installed—all details essential to return this classic

home to its former glory.

By removing interior walls, Stengel was able to double the size of the kitchen,

merging early 20th century style and 21st century amenities. Custom designed,

painted cabinets, hidden pantries, wainscoting, marble countertops and a subway

tile backsplash complete the period look and feel. High end appliances, including

a gas range, wine cooler, concealed TV and cook top vented to an existing chim-

ney provides a modern polished look and convenience.

Interior doors, hardware, moldings and chandeliers were refurbished. The orig-

inal radiators were restored and made fully functional. Mechanicals and HVAC

systems were updated. Icynene foam insulation enhances the high efficiency units

that were integrated in multiple zones throughout the home.

Ultimately, four bathrooms were renovated, including a now luxurious mas-

ter bath. Stengel converted the existing master bath into a walk-in closet. An

adjoining bedroom became the master bath, featuring heated tile floor, a cast iron

whirlpool tub for modern comfort with a period look, and a private water closet

with the European-style toilet/bidet combination.

A sleeping porch on the second floor received a new copper roof. The third

floor, accessed via the original low-ceiling stairway, was given a cottage-like feel

with refinished pine floors, a guest bedroom, bath and sitting area.

Remodeler and Builder Vince Kimbel renovated this three-story Highlands

home in keeping with its traditional style, but with every modern amenity. The

wood trim, hand-scraped hardwood floor and custom cabinets in the remodeled

kitchen have old-world charm, while new high-end appliances, including a Subzero

refrigerator, Miele dishwasher, Thermador electric cook top and Jenn-Air

warming drawer to provide state-of-the art convenience. The varied trims of the

breakfast room match those of the rest of the house.

A stairwell from the kitchen to the remodeled basement was opened up to

create a wide landing with raised wood panels and a cast iron railing, bringing

together these family spaces on two levels. The basement was torn back to the

studs, and new carpet, new trim work, including bead board and a chair rail, were

added along with custom cabinets and an entertainment center. Two steel support

columns were also encased in colonial-look columns. A bar with wine cooler,

beverage center, ice maker and small dishwasher make the renovated basement a

perfect space for entertaining.

The longtime owners of this classic Seneca Park Stratton-Hammond ranch

home hired Steve Sebastian to turn their never-finished basement into a highly

functional and comfortable living area. Part of an existing lower level garage

was converted into a workshop with pegboard walls suitable for hanging tools, a

heated and cooled storage room with custom cabinets, and a utility/laundry room

with a 20-foot long counter and built-in refrigerator. A separate office features

custom built-in cabinets and bookcases, as does a sitting room with TV that has a hid-

den Murphy bed and an area where one of the owners enjoys painting as a hobby.

Sebastian also removed a concrete wall in the basement to enlarge an

existing bathroom. Corian countertops grace the new bathroom and the rest of the

remodeled basement areas, and the owner’s own artwork provides a suitable

finishing touch in the hallway.

The owners of this Cannons Lane area ranch home wanted to update and upgrade

their home of many years, so Pat Wissing created a 317 square foot addition plus

another 400 square foot screened enclosure to add both character and comfort. A

new stone paver entry and front porch welcome visitors. The remodeled kitchen

features cottage cabinets with a honey maple glaze, granite countertops and all

new appliances. A custom-built entertainment center and red oak hardwood floors

accent the addition, along with a refurbished stone fireplace with new mantle.

Double French doors lead to the new screened porch, and a mud room with custom

shelves and cubbies, and a new two-and-a-half-car garage that is accessible via a

new side entry. On the exterior, Coronado stone and Hardy fiber cement siding

pull together the look of old and new.

The owners of this one-and-a-half story Oxmoor Woods home wanted to move

the master suite to the first floor, so remodeler Robert Peterson expanded

an existing first floor bedroom into an oasis of comfort and convenience. A

first floor bathroom became a large ladies’ walk-in closet, and the existing

walk-in closet is the men’s. An all-new master bathroom was created with a

vaulted ceiling, heated tile floor, his and hers vanities, corner whirlpool tub,

and a completely open walk-in shower with a unique curved serpentine wall

of earth-tone mosaic tile that separates the shower from the bath area. The

luxurious bathroom is separated from the new master bedroom by a sliding

black Shoji Japanese-style glazed door with glass panels that coordinates with

the black vanities.

New ceramic tile in the foyer and hallway of the home ties together the new

master suite with the rest of the house.

Open space and abundant light: That’s what Phil Fackler brought to this Oxmoor

Woods two-story when he expanded its kitchen, master suite and terraced back yard.

Beginning upstairs, Fackler completely gutted the master bath, installing new

tile, granite countertops, new lighting fixtures and a new window. A wall of the

existing master closet was torn down to open the area as a sitting room with two

round windows and custom book shelves, and a new, huge master closet with cus-

tom cabinets and a full laundry was created from what had been a spare room over

the garage. Oak hardwood floors with walnut accents and recessed lighting grace

the new master suite and sitting area, and a new fireplace with built-in plasma TV

above completes the cozy feel.

Wainscoting was added to the upper hallway and foyer below, where crown

molding and other trim details are among the colonial design accents. The new

kitchen is double the size of the old one, now with custom maple cabinets, granite

countertops, hardwood floors, and professional grade appliances by Gaggenau,

including a custom steam convection oven, separate refrigerator and freezer with

wood door panels, warming drawers, and a custom stainless steel hood over a

gas cook top—a delight to the owners who love to cook and entertain. A unique

feature of the kitchen is an unusually shaped eating bar that angles away from the

chef/host at work.

The back wall of the kitchen is a sweep of full-length windows and glass doors

that lead to a new terrace accented with limestone pavers, which can be accessed

from either the breakfast room or the expanded great room. A 6 by 22-foot stone

fireplace is the centerpiece of the back yard, and is flanked by cooking areas, for

when the cooking and entertaining moves outdoors.

The owners of this two-story Hurstbourne home off Colonel Anderson Parkway

wanted to add a sunroom to the kitchen, where they could enjoy the view of

mature trees in a lovely back yard. Remodeler Stan Humphrey knocked out the

back of the existing kitchen, and added a sunroom with a sweep of windows and

a vaulted ceiling. An island and some existing cabinets were removed, and new

cabinets were installed to draw the kitchen and sunroom together. A light-colored

ceramic tile floor throughout unifies and completes the expanded space.

The back yard adjoining the new sunroom was completely re-landscaped, and

a double-tier paver patio with new lighting was added—all of which can now be

admired from the stunning new kitchen and sunroom with its 180-degree view.

Phillip W. Leigh, Sr. has given new life to this half-century-old Jeffersontown area

ranch, while maintaining its style within the southern-themed neighborhood. He

literally took the roof off, adding 2,300 square feet to the interior and almost dou-

bling the living space. An 80-foot porch was created in front, along with a veranda

in back, complete with a porch swing. Two mature trees in front were preserved,

as were the original brick fireplaces inside the house, which was completely re-

wired and re-plumbed.

Oak and travertine tile floors accent the grand room, kitchen and foyer, which

features a barrel ceiling. Low ceilings were raised to opened throughout most of

the house, and the new kitchen features a 10-foot island, granite countertops, cabi-

nets with built-in spice racks, and professional grade appliances. Bay windows in

the cooking area afford a view of the back yard, which could easily accommodate

an in-ground pool.

Downstairs is a 900 square foot mother-in-law suite with its own outside

entrance, master bedroom with tray ceiling, two large closets, glass-enclosed

shower, eight-foot vanity, separate den with fireplace, second bathroom, and

The owners of this Fern Creek/Highview area tri-level home love to cook and en-

tertain, as do their teenaged children, and remodeler Rick Allison has given them

plenty of room and all the amenities in their newly expanded kitchen-great room.

Walk in the front door, and be amazed at the space that’s been created. A wall

between the old kitchen and family room was removed to create this large, func-

tional and highly livable area, with the kitchen now central and inviting. The en-

larged kitchen area features tiger wood Brazilian flooring, a very large island with

vegetable sink and room to perch on a bar stool and eat under pendant lighting, a

planning desk, granite countertops, ceramic tile backsplash, top of the line General

Electric appliances, and crown molding throughout to finish the look. In addition

to the large screen TV in the expanded family room area, a TV hangs under the

new custom kitchen cabinets—ready for all who gather in this lively space.

The owners of this home in a country-like setting in the Fern Creek area wanted to

have family gatherings with everyone in the same room, so Hundley Construction

expanded the existing kitchen and pulled an enlarged dining area into the kitchen

space. The spacious new kitchen features custom cabinets, a stained wooden ca-

thedral ceiling, granite countertops and all new appliances.

Hundley Construction also built an addition on the side of the house, creating

a single-car garage, a laundry and an additional bathroom, all now conveniently

located on the first floor, rather than on the walkout level below. The kitchen and

other addition almost double the living space on the first floor from 1,800 to 3,100

square feet. An added bonus, under the kitchen addition is now a large room for

sewing and crafts.

When it’s time for the extended family to head outdoors, there will be more

space to gather there as well, on an enlarged deck off the kitchen that surrounds an

existing swimming pool.
