Goals
The Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC) was created through a $7.2 milliongrant from the United States Department of Education that ended with the 20072008
school year. MCPS has adapted the goals established by the grant to meet current system
needs. The MSMC goals are to

Milestones
Middle School Magnet Consortium students keep track of their educational progress
through grades and assessments in their course work. They also track their progress
through several milestone achievements each year that span the skills and knowledge of
the disciplines. MSMC schools have developed milestones for each grade level in the fol-

The schools that form the Middle School Magnet Consortium each have a distinct instructionalfocus, yet share several common elements to establish a rigorous academic program for all
students. All MSMC schools offer

Common ElEmEnts
A primary goal of the Middle School Magnet Consortium is to increase student capacity forhigher-level instruction in middle school and for advanced study in high school. Several commonelements among the three schools have been established to
ensure a consistently high level of rigor for all students.
Accelerated Core Curriculum
Though each Consortium school has a distinct instructional
focus, the academically rigorous accelerated core curriculum
promotes high school and college preparation for all students.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has developed
a program of studies that provides students earlier access tochallenging courses. Students in MSMC schools have the
opportunity to earn credit for up to eight high school courses
bytheendofGrade8.Thechartonthenextpageshowsthe
range of courses available to MSMC students. Courses that
carry high school credits are noted with an asterisk (*).
Specialized Courses and
Extended Learning Opportunities
The distinct instructional focus of each magnet school
computer science and digital design at Argyle, arts at
Loiederman, and science at Parkland, provides a content-based
structure for the curriculum at each school. Interdisciplinary
connections are formed around the concepts, content, and
thought processes of the schools instructional focus. In
addition,everystudenthastheopportunitytotakespecialized
courses in the schools area of focus. See each schools
descriptionforspecicexamples.
Each school offers after-school and summer learning
opportunities such as academic coaching and support in
the core curriculum. Clubs and other after-school activities
will be related to the schools instructional focus. Summer
programs related to the schools theme will be offered if the
MCPS budget permits.
Options For All
Every student has
the option to take a
specialized course.
Students also may take
advanced courses in
the schools specialty.
High School Credit
Students in Consortium
schools will have the
opportunity to earn
credit for up to eight
high school courses by
the end of Grade 8.

Highly Effective Instructional Program
MSMC schools provide professional development
forteachersandextendedlearningopportunities
for students to create a rigorous instructional
program at each Consortium school. Professional
development and team planning time for teachers
is provided within the school day. Professional
development centers around helping students
reach their highest potential in the accelerated
core curriculum and specialty courses. The
magnet coordinator and staff development teacher
at each school help coordinate the professional
developmentforteachersandextendedlearning
opportunities for students.
Collaborative Partnerships
MSMCschools have established partnershipswithbusiness and community organizations to
supporttheinstructionalfocusoftheschool.PartnershipsbetweenArgyleandBoozAllenHamilton,
Loiederman and Strathmore Music and Art Center and Roundhouse Theatre, and Parkland and
NASA/Raytheon areexamples ofsuccessfulcollaborative relationships that MSMC schools
have formed. In addition, each school works closely with parents to strengthen school-home
partnerships.

to accelerate in the eld of aerospace science.
Extended Learning Opportunities
MSMCschoolsofferavarietyofextendedlearningopportunitiesafterschoolincludingacademic coaching and support in the core curriculum. Aerospace related after-school
clubs may include such offerings as astronomy and robotics. Summer programs related
to the schools theme will be offered if the MCPS budget permits.
What will a student schedule look like?
MSMC schools use an innovative block schedule. That means students have four classes
