Family Book Launch & Annual Reunion Dinner in Penang The year started with the launch of the family book entitled “From Fujian to Penang and beyond” in Penang on 8 February. This annual message summarizes the main events for the year 2008 for the Lim Chean Hock/Khoo Saw Saik family. 1. Family Book Launch & Annual Reunion Dinner in Penang

The year started with the launch of the family book entitled “From Fujian to Penang and beyond” in Penang on 8 February. This event coincided with the annual family reunion dinner which was well attended by about 70 family members. Fig. 1 shows a photo of the book launch, with the three co-editors, namely Ong Poh Kee, Wilson Lim and Angela Ang. Other photos are shown in Figs. 2, 3 & 4.

2. Family video-recording session at Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Penang

On 9th. February, about forty members gathered at Cheong Fatt Tze mansion to hear ten members share interesting stories. The session started off with an address by Madam Wee Keow Hoon, followed by Mr Ong Poh Kee and other relatives, including Lim Keow Kheng, Lee Keat Chye, Wilson Lim, Cheah Phee Chong, Wee-Ch’ng Keow Hiang, Leong Khoon Wah, Lim Lin Lee, Angela Ang and Ong Ai Lin. Topics included:

� “Fond memories of 25 Farquhar Street”, � “Fond memories of the Matriarch Khoo Saw Saik”, � “Recollections of family reunion dinners”, � “Writing of Lim Chean Hock family book”, � “Happy days in Penang”, � “The family of Lim Eng Choon” and � “Memories of Lim Pek Chin”.

3. Special birthdays and wedding anniversaries In June, Mr Lim Ewe Huat (3rd. generation) celebrated his 80th. birthday in Singapore, with friends and relatives. His dinner was at Mandarin Marina. Madam Wee Keow Hoon and Mr & Mrs Ong Poh Kee from Penang attended the dinner.

The Lim family also extends their congratulations and best wishes to Mr & Mrs Ch’ng Keong Kheam (3rd. generation) (better known as Ah Bah & Chun Hoon) on the occasion of their 60th. wedding anniversary. They were married on 18 December 1948.

4. Family Accolades

Congratulations to Madam Yow Sow Lay (4th. generation) for being appointed Principal of Methodist Girls’ School, Penang, as from January 2009. Sow Lay and her husband Leong Khoon Wah are in the accompanying photograph.

Louisa is the daughter of Lim Kean Chong & Grace Ong, and the grand-daughter of Lim Ewe Huat & Evelyn Tan. Louisa is now studying Economics, Politics and International Studies at University of Warwick, England.

5. University Graduation Well done to Miss Olivia Leong (5th. generation) for her degree from University of Malaya, in Computer Science (Information Systems and Management).

Fig. 13: Graduation photo of Olivia Leong (5th. generation) Congratulations also to Miss Antonia Fei Colin-Jones (5th. generation), who has graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Economics with Transport Studies), from the University of Leeds, England. Antonia is the daughter of Yvonne Quahe and Graham Colin-Jones. She is now working with Jacob’s consultants in London.

Dr Andrew Lim (4th. generation), received a Masters degree in orthopedic surgery from the National University of Singapore. Andrew is now working with the National University Hospital, Singapore.

6. Births There were two births in the year 2008 and the family extends hearty congratulations and best wishes to the proud parents: 1] Joy Natasha (5th. generation), born in May 2008 to Shireen (4th. generation) and Godwin Supramaniam in the state of Selangor.

2] Rebecca Tay (5th. generation), born in September 2008 to Siew Lin (4th. generation) and David Tay in the state of Penang.

7. Family weddings 2008 witnessed two weddings, one in Penang and the other in New Jersey, USA. In May 2008, Loh-Lim Szu-Fen (5th. generation) was married to Lee Ville in Penang. Sze-Fen is the daughter of Lim Lin Lee and Laurence Loh.

8. Family bereavements In October, Madam Cheah Keow Loo (3rd. generation) passed away in Kuala Lumpur. Keow Loo is the daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Cheah Hong Teik. The late Madam Cheah Keow Loo leaves behind a son Khoo Boo Kean in Kuala Lumpur.

She is the wife of the late Mr Quah Chok Jin (3rd. generation). The late Madam Lee Ah Kiew leaves behind her daughter Cynthia Quah and family in Singapore, her son Quah Eu Meng and family in Dalian.

8. Other events Brenton (5th. generation), who is the elder son of Sheela and Denny, joined the Royal Australian Air Force in January. He is now doing his B.Sc. degree at the University of New South Wales, on the campus located at the Australian Defense Force Academy in Canberra.

Fig.22: Brenton (5th. generation) in Perth, WA In September 2008, Dr. Shirlene Lim (daughter of Albert Lim) received the “Young Investigator Award” in Washington, DC, for her research achievements. Back in Australia, Shirlene also performed skydiving over Sydney at a height of over 4,000 metres. Incidentally, her brothers Andrew Lim Kean Leong did skydiving in the USA in 2004 and Michael Lim Kean Chong enjoyed the same sport over Sydney in 2006.

Fig.24: Shirlene Lim skydiving at 4,000 metres over Sydney, Australia Lim Ewe Jin and his wife Gaik Sim have recently moved from Penang Island to live in a suburb near to Bukit Mertajam on mainland Penang. Holden Lim Kian Liang (4th. generation), Kris, and their two children Sheridan and Evan, finally outgrew their old townhouse in Daly City, California and recently moved to a house in San Mateo, California, which is a 30-minute drive south of San Francisco.
