according to regulation (ec) no. 1907/2006 (reach), the manufacture or import of chemical substances in volumes exceeding 1 ton per year must be registered at the european chemicals agency (echa) in helsinki. reach registra-tion is related to substances and not products, e.g. preparations/formulations of substances. Production, import and marketing of a reach-substance will be restricted to those uses evaluated in its registration dossier. the reach process starts with preregistration (1st june 2008 until 1st december 2008), which ensures the availability of preregistered substances to the registration date. the date of registration depends on the production volume of the substance and lies between 2010 and 2018. We confirm that we will, pursuant to reach requirements, pre-register all substances manufactured by clariant functional chemicals division in the eu or imported in the eu, that are relevant for the products listed in this bro-chure. however, no guarantee can be given that clariant will offer all listed products in the future, particularly over the 11 year phase of the reach implementation. if reach registration requirements lead to unacceptable costs, clariant will contact its customers to find an appropriate solution.

genapol®, emulsogen®, arkopal®, sapogenat®, dispersogen®, calsogen®, genamin®, synergen®, genagen® are registered trademarks of clariant.

introduction

Emulsogen® V 1816 EO/PO block copolymer 100; pasty ca. 72,9 6 960 Low molecular weight EO/POs typically have a molecular weight below 1000 g/mol. These surfactant molecules are small and flexible and can quickly adhere to newly formed surfaces. Medium molecular weight EO/POs typically cover molecular weights from about 1000 – 3000 g/mol. As a consequence of the increased molecular weight, these products tend to exhibit higher viscosity and/or waxier consistency. Their main application fields are as emulsifiers and dispersants in EC and SC formulations. High molecular weight EO/POs have molecular weights typically above 3000 g/mol and are mostly waxy, only a few being liquid. They are used as co-emulsifiers or dispersants in EC or SC formulations.

Sapogenat® t 040 Tri-sec-butylphenol polyglycol ether with 4 EO 100; liquid

ca. 27,5 8 not reg. 4-Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) and 4-Octylphenol ethoxylates (OPEs) as well as the underlying phenols are listed in the EU SEC (2004) Document as substances with evidence of endocrine- disrupting effects (Category 1) whereas 2,4,6-Tri-sec.-butylphenol as well as its ethoxylated derivatives (Sapogenat T types) are not listed.Based on the structural elements of known endocrine disrupters (EDs), it is likely that the endocrine-disrupting effect of alkylphenols and derived ethoxylates is associated with

- a para-substituted alkyl group on the aromatic ring with at least 3 carbon atoms- no polyalkylation on the aromatic ring Supporting evidence was obtained using three different in vitro receptor binding tests with Sapogenat T 130 and 2,4,6-Tri-sec.- butylphenol in which both molecules did NOT show endocrine- disrupting effects in any of these tests. In these test models the known EDs estradiol and 4-Octylphenol clearly showed endocrine-disrupting effects demonstrating the suitability of the test models.

Based on available scientific facts published in literature as well as on the results from 3 different in vitro tests it can be concluded in a weight of evidence approach that it is unlikely that 2,4,6-Tri-sec.-butylphenol and the ethoxylated derivatives (Sapogenat T types) exhibit endocrine-disrupting effects.
