BEHIND THE NEW LOOK SUSF

A meaningful new identity for Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness was

launched in 2008; one that pays homage to our proud,

traditional roots, while doing justice to our vibrant and diverse

future.

A year later, it has been an unmitigated success. Yet where

did the logo come from?

If you recall, the former Sydney University Sport logo was a

simplified version of the Sydney University coat of arms dating

back to 1855. The shield’s main arms represented elements

of the Oxbridge tradition: an open book for Oxford, and a

blue cross for Cambridge. Colours and emblems related to

the countries of the United Kingdom, the Prince of Wales and

the stars of the Southern Cross.

In the new logo, key visual associations have been

maintained but modernised. The lion, the shield shape and

blue and gold colours express our essential personality

strength, prowess and fitness.

We are the lion. Hear us roar.

JANUARY 2008 brought with itthe imperative of change. Facedwith the challenge of movingfrom assured funding fromstudent subscriptions (as a resultof voluntary student unionism

legislation in 2006) SUSF had to rely heavily onthe University to finance our activities. We werefortunate in receiving advice and assistancefrom a number of the University’s officers, inparticular Paul Slater, Deborrah Lambourne andBob Kotic. John McCarthy, QC and Fellow ofSenate, was also a ready source of wise counselto us in a time of considerable uncertainty.

Fortunately, the University Senate resolved tovery substantially underwrite the studentexperience here at Sydney University. We freelyacknowledge the outstanding generosity of ourUniversity in supporting us in this way. As aresult we have been able to continue tooperate without the need to curtail any of ouressential activities.

Instead, while not a change we welcomed, the introduction of VSU at Sydney University

had the unintended consequence of causingSydney Uni Sport & Fitness to enter into agenuine partnership with the University. Thishas provided very tangible benefits to us andregardless of what the future may hold, we willendeavour to maintain the very close links wenow have with our parent body.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts of ourFinance and Administration Manager, TonyJackson, in familiarising himself with theintricacies of the University accountingprotocols and in spending long hourspreparing estimates and forecasts in therequired format.

Another big change came with theunexpected resignation of our ExecutiveDirector, Greg Harris, who had provided strongleadership through sixteen years of growth andachievement. The new Executive Director, Rob

Smithies, with Michelle Nancarrow as hisDeputy, came from within our own ranks andhandled the transition seamlessly. We believe that we have justified theUniversity’s faith in us by our performancesthroughout 2008 in relation to our businessoperations; our delivery of leisure and fitnessservices to the University community; and theachievements of our clubs and individualathletes. In a challenging economic environment wewere able to finish the year with a healthytrading surplus, due largely to solid patronageof our centres, a credit to the dedication andinitiative of the staff.Pleasingly, 2008 was another wonderful year ofsporting achievement with seven athletescollecting medals at the Beijing Olympics andParalympics, a gold medal for Bronwen Watsonat the World Rowing Championships and aworld record for Matt Jaukovic in the 50mMen’s Short Course Butterfly. Our rugby clubwon its fourth consecutive Sydney First GradePremiership and our rowing club was ranked

most successful at the NationalChampionships. Finally, is it more than appropriate to paytribute to the army of volunteers who worktirelessly to make our sporting clubs sosuccessful.

SYDNEY UNI SPORT & FITNESS ANNUAL REPORT 2008 5

I BEGIN my first report as Executive Directorby acknowledging the success of theprevious Executive Director, Greg Harris.Greg’s vision, guidance and drive helped totake this organisation from a struggling,navel-gazing rabble to the successful and

professional operation it is today. Many achievementscould be highlighted from his tenure, however his efforts tokeep the Football and Cricket Clubs at the top level of theirrespective Sydney Grade competitions, the redevelopmentof the Sports & Aquatic Centre, the improvement of thescholarship system, the merger of the men’s Sports Unionand the Women’s Sports Association, and his fight againstthe VSU legislation stand out as landmarks that haveshaped Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness and its clubs.

Together with President, Bruce Ross and members of theManagement Committee and clubs, Greg forged a culturethat is now infused in the corridors – we play hard and weaim to win, we take studying seriously and we invest in thefuture. Thanks Greg for your hard work, your investment inpeople, your willingness to take a chance and most of all, your passion.

2008 was another solid year for Sydney Uni Sport &Fitness. These achievements, detailed further in this report, highlight just some of what was accomplished:

• Over $1.8 million spent on infrastructure – the 2ndbiggest spend over the last 20 years – including new 500lux lights on Oval No. 1, new roofing on the Glebeboathouse and interior refurbishment, new tiling and airconditioning at the Arena, new grounds machinery, andmajor capital works at the Sports & Aquatic Centre;

• Successfully re-branding of the organisation to begintrading as “Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness”, launching a newwebsite and ROAR magazine;

• A record profit generated in our commercial gymfacilities, an excellent result in a tough economy and withseveral new competitors opening in our catchment area;

• 20 Sydney Uni Olympians and Paralympians representingAustralia at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, winning 3 silverand 4 bronze medals;

• A 4th consecutive first grade rugby premiership;• The Cricket Club making the finals in all grades;• The ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flames finishing runners-up in a

tough grand final;• The Women’s National League Volleyball team winning

their national competition;• Our Boat and Rowing clubs continuing to dominate the

national landscape as the best clubs in Australia, againwinning the Centenary Oar;

• Swimmer Matt Jaukovic breaking the world record for the

50 metre short-course butterfly;• Rower Bronwen Watson winning gold at the World

Championships;• A record spend on scholarships and athlete support;• The employment of directors of cricket, soccer and

hockey; and• Our first ever sport function dedicated solely to female

sport, the Blue & Gold Flames lunch, which raised over$14,000.

This was all achieved whilst still maintaining a healthybudget surplus and without incurring any debt.

None of this would have occurred without a lot ofsupport from many areas. First and foremost I must thankour friends at the University who have supported us in thepost-VSU era and given hours of their time and energy tohelping us, not to mention the obvious and muchappreciated financial assistance. Many thanks to GavinBrown and Dr. Michael Spence, Bob Kotic, DeborrahLambourne, Andrew Coats, Paul Slater, John McCarthy QC,John Cox, Phil Sorbello, Tony Cox, Ingrid Bascur, RichardFisher, Olivia Perks, and Richard North. A big thanks toDavid Lavings and Matt Inch from CMS Consulting whoassisted with the major capital works projects.

Finally, my thanks to all of the dedicated staff andvolunteers who put in so many hours ensuring we provide ahigh level of service to our clubs, athletes and patrons eachday. So many people fall into this category that I am unableto name them individually, however I would specifically liketo thank my Senior Managers, Tony Jackson, David Shaw,Ian Evans, Rod Tubbs, Ross Xenos, Michelle Nancarrow,Martin Harland and all the SUSF staff for their fantasticefforts in 2008.

2009 presents a fresh set of challenges and opportunitiesfor our organisation. I remain confident that, with ourpeople and resources, we will meet those challenges andcontinue to deliver a successful and vibrant sport andfitness program.

God bless,

Rob SmithiesExecutive Director

UNIVERSITY PROGRAMSShort Courses2008 was an encouraging year for ShortCourses which attracted a total of 551enrolments; 60 more enrolments than2007. The number of enrolments takenin semester 2 was the highest taken in a

semester since semester 1 2002.The most interesting achievement,

however, was the ratio of members tonon-members which has graduallydecreased from 1:2.5 in semester 12007 to 1:1.3 in semester 2 2008. Witha greater number of enrolments and anincreased proportion of non-members,the income for the program hasincreased over the past four semesterswith a sharp increase in the mostrecent semester.

The gradual increase in participantnumbers may be attributed to:

• Increase in the number of coursesoffered

• ‘Fit & Energised’ e-newsletter sentto previous participants andenquirers at the beginning of eachsemester

• Inclusion of short coursesadvertising in ROAR magazines,ROAR e-newsletters and ISSUnewsletters

• Marketing and promotional focus

result of webpage referrals. The bettereducation of SUSF customer servicestaff was also a key factor in thesuccess of the program in semester 22008.

The four fencing courses offered insemester 1 and 2 in 2008 were by farthe most popular courses. Many ofthose who had participated in thebeginner courses in 2007 returned forthe intermediate course in 2008.Fencing was so popular in semester 2that an extra course running from theend of semester until Christmas wasset up to accommodate for thedemand.

The growth of the program is limitedby the availability of venues. A greaternumber of courses may be conductedbut they would have to be ones whichare outsourced due to the lack ofavailable facilities on campus duringpeak hours. For semester 1 2009,greater venue availability has beenallocated to the program withadditional courses planned to run inthe Activities Hall and EducationAnnexe Dance Studio on Mondayevenings.

The link with clubs has beenstrengthened this year with theaddition of archery for beginners andbadminton for beginners. Both clubshave stated that the establishment ofcourses has been beneficial inattracting new club members. Otherclubs such as Sailing and UltimateFrisbee have expressed interest inrunning beginner courses in the

program in semester 2 2009.The key strategies for promotions in

2009 are: introduction of new courses,‘open for everyone’ slogan, user-friendly web pages and onlineenrolments, distribution of ‘get fit andenergised’ e-newsletter to pastparticipants and enquiries, SUSF staffeducation prior to program launch,Come n Try for FREE promotion inconjunction with SMS reminders, promotional presentations to keymarket groups – international students, college and university housingresidents, and the delivery of brochuresto the local community and non-member markets.

Lunchtime Sport2008 was a great improvement on 2007where the number of teams registeredin the indoor mixed netballcompetition decreased significantlyfrom 2006 and where 3-on-3 basketballand dodgeball competitions failed torun due to insufficient registrations.Several teams from the indoor opensoccer competition in 2007 returned toparticipate in both semester 1 and 2 in2008 whilst the popularity of the newindoor mixed soccer competition grewthroughout the year.

The new fixtures and format for theindoor open soccer competition andthe on-going support of the Co OpBookshop as sponsors are key factorsin creating culture for the program.Teams indicated that the new formatwhich allowed an ultimate winner in the

competition was a winning formula. The indoor open soccer competitionran at capacity in both semesters in2008 with a maximum of 48 teamsregistered in both semesters.

The indoor mixed netballcompetition attracted 8 teams insemester 1 but only 5 in semester 2.Indoor mixed soccer had 5 teams insemester 1 and 8 in semester 2.

One of the most encouragingoutcomes was the inclusion of teamsfrom International House and SydneyUni Village. The residencies have noworganised to cover the costs of teamsin the program. This is set to continuein 2009.

A promotional initiative thatattracted interest to the program inboth semesters was the inclusion of themessage ‘Don’t have a team? Contactus and we’ll try and find one for you tojoin’ on posters and flyers. Individualsmade enquiries throughout the year toget involved in the program and insemester 2 at least 2 teams were madeup of those who had called without ateam.

A number of enquiries are alsocoming through the web page for theprogram which includes all new andcurrent season information. It is hopedthat in 2009, an online results systemmay be set up to encourage greater useof the web page.

For semester 1 2009, the sameschedule for indoor open soccer, indoormixed netball and indoor mixed soccerwill be run. An open basketball

competition will also be included. Sincethe number of netball teams registeringhas decreased over the past 3semesters, a court is available for anextra competition to be run. The formatof the basketball competition will notbe 3-on-3, but rather with full 5-playerteams. An extra 2-3pm timeslot onThursdays has also been reserved as anoverflow option for teams that miss outon registering in the indoor opensoccer competition as teams wereturned away in both semesters 1 and 2with the competition booked tocapacity.

A focus for the program in 2009 willbe trying to build and foster culture toencourage teams to return forconsecutive seasons. A ‘hall of fame’will be set up on the noticeboardwhere pictures of previous winningteams will be posted.

Events in semester 1 attracted betternumbers than 2007, but most events insemester 2 had a lower rate ofparticipation. It is unknown whatfactors caused the decline inparticipation in the program insemester 2.

Interfaculty Sport participationnumbers have been on the decline forthe past few years with 983 participantsin 2005, 973 participants in 2006, 942participants in 2007 and 893participants in 2008. A loss of almost100 participants over a four-year periodis apparent. Further consultation withthe faculty representatives will occur in2009 to better determine what sports

Work were victorious for the secondyear in a row followed by VeterinaryScience, Commerce and Lawrespectively. It was disappointing thatMedicine finished towards the back ofthe field given the rivalry in previousyears between Education andMedicine. However, it was encouragingto see smaller faculties such asPharmacy, Law, Dentistry, Agricultureand Engineering participating in anumber of events throughoutthe year.

2008 saw two interns oversee theadministration and organisation ofInterfaculty Sport; Johanna Way insemester 1 and Antony Butler insemester 2. Antony Butler will bestaying on to manage the program forsemester 1 2009.

16 events have been scheduled for2009 with traditional and individualsports such as cricket and squashomitted in favour of more popularteam events. The 16 events in 2009 areas follows: touch football (2competitions), tennis, soccer m, soccerw, ultimate frisbee, netball, badminton, table tennis, basketball m, basketballw, indoor soccer (2 competitions),volleyball, handball and 5km run.

It is hoped that the inclusion of lesstraditional and easier-to-play sports willturn around the declining participationrate for the program. Communicationwith faculty sports representatives willneed to be improved as well aspromotional strategies.

Intercollege SportThe overall victor of the 2008 RawsonCup was St Paul’s College and theRosebowl was Wesley College. Thefinal overall point scores are as follows:

2008 was an eventful year forIntercollege Sport with challenges suchas incidents of misbehaviour and theft, tribunal hearings, a rain-drenchedRawson rugby final and what seemedlike a never-ending list of items toamend in the constitution and policyand procedure documents. Despite theobstacles, the 2008 Intercol Committeeand Leonie Lum banded together toensure that the Rawson and Rosebowlevents were delivered in a professionalfashion, addressing as many loopholes

and ambiguities in the constitution andsporting by-laws as possible. In handingover to the 2009 committee, the 2008Intercol committee left a legacy ofcleaner finances and a plan to ensurethe stability of Rawson and Rosebowlsport and other Intercol events forfuture years.

Two years from the first involvementof SUSF in the management of Rawsonand Rosebowl events, efficient policyand procedures are now in place toensure the program is deliveredeffectively. Venue bookings for eventsare secured at least 6 months inadvance and the communication of thecalendar and notices around thecollege community are well-managed.College teams can now be assured thatevents are sufficiently staffed withqualified officials, safety procedures arein place and a reliable systemestablished to ensure protests areheard fairly and promptly. Thoseunfamiliar with the intercollegiatenetwork can now easily find a relevantcontact for their enquiries. Eventprogrammes are now distributed tothe college community at least 2weeks prior to an event and allcurrent information can be accessedvia the intercollege sport webpage.

While the management of Rawsonand Rosebowl sporting events hasbecome more systematic and efficient, there is still a way to go in ironing outcertain policies and procedures.Management of behaviour at events isstill a work in progress. Intercolrecognised and accepted their duties inevent management following incidentsat the rowing regatta in 2008 but thecommittee is yet to ratify a behaviourmanagement strategy to deal withmisbehaviour at events.

A five-year agreement was signed withthe residential colleges at the conclusionof 2008, securing SUSF involvement inthe management of Rawson andRosebowl sport until 2013. It was statedin the 2007 annual report that emphasisin 2008 would be placed on improvingthe services and programs currently runby SUSF to better cater to the needs ofthe college community, rather than onstreamlining the management ofintercollege sport. It is hoped that in2009 this will be achieved.

Affiliated Campuses2007 saw most of the affiliatedcampuses remain fairly active inpromoting sport and recreationactivities despite a reduction infunding, 2008 was in contrast a veryinactive year. The Conservatorium ofMusic used their funding to participatein the social netball competitions heldat the University Sports & AquaticCentre. Medicine, Law, Dentistry(Westmead), Sydney College of theArts, and Veterinary Science (Camden)did not utilise their allotments despiteactive encouragement by SUSF staff torun sporting activities on their

campuses. Dentistry and Medicine failedto get their annual rugby tournamentrunning due to issues with insurance.Law did run their annual sports day.Veterinary Science (Camden) signed upSUSF members throughout 2008 but didnot take advantage of the 100% rebateoffered to them.

It is hoped that visits to the affiliatedcampuses and meetings with new 2009campus representatives early semester1 2009 will help to promote andencourage greater participation insport and recreation activities at theaffiliated campuses.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMSSchool Holiday Sports CampsThe School Holiday Sports Campscontinue to be very popular with 2,551enrolments taken in 2008. Enrolmentsin the sports camps persist largely dueto the database of previousparticipants, sporting clubs andchildcare organisations that are sent abrochure every school holiday period.Local schools are also deliveredbrochures for distribution and sentmarketing information about thecamps. The data shows that themajority of enrolments are previousparticipants and that word of mouth isalso a very effective marketing tool. The mail out to past camp participantshas reached its largest ever distribution(over 4,500).

85 sports camps were offeredthroughout the year, an increase on the80 camps offered in 2007 and 77 in2006. Total enrolments were well downfrom 2007 where 3,256 were recorded. The reasons for this are varied butinclude a combination of factorsincluding staff turnover at SUSF andCamp Australia, the economicdownturn and increased competition inthe local area.

The multi-sport camps at both HK

Ward Gymnasium and St Andrew’sOval proved popular with new sportsand instructors. Soccer, cricket, tennis, netball and basketball also provedfavourites this year with our water poloprogram steadily improvingparticipation rates.

Key relationships were establishedwith Camp Directors and Sydney Uniclubs (particularly rugby union, cricketand basketball). The Acuvue SydneyUni Flames maintained theirinvolvement in 2008 with basketballplayers delivering coaching sessionsand player appearances. The SydneyUni Football Club supplied coaches forthe rugby union camps and alsoorganized player appearances from theWaratahs. The Sydney Uni CricketClub has always been very good atsupplying coaches and they continuedto be great supporters of the programin 2008.

The multi-sport camps throughout

the year included the usualcomplement of excellentcoaches and teachers. TheCamp Directors were allqualified and experienced PEteachers and the guestinstructors included instructors injudo and hip hop dance, chiefinstructor in Aikido, certifiedultimate frisbee instructors, aLevel 3 fencing instructor andMaestro of Arms, and AustralianEuropean handballrepresentatives. A Matilda’splayer also coached on thesoccer camps providingcoaching tips for young femaleplayers. They are theofficial snack supplier and have reachedan agreement which will see thempartner with Sydney Uni Sports Campsfor the next three years.

The contractual agreement betweenCamp Australia and SUSF continued in2008. Camp Australia experiencedsignificant restructuring this year atadministration and customer servicelevels. Neil Finlay continues to workwith their staff to maximise benefit toboth organisations through qualityservice delivery of our camps.

Support for community groups fordisadvantaged children such as theBoys and Girls Brigade and NASCA wascontinued throughsponsored campplacements and sports programs oncampus in 2008.

School SportThree primary schools, two highschools, one tertiary institution and onespecial school from the local areaparticipated in the School SportProgram at Sydney Uni in 2008.Schools included Paddington PublicSchool, North Newtown Public School,St Mary’s Cathedral School, St Andrew’sCathedral School, Carinya SpecialSchool, Alexandria Park Primary andHigh School, Balmain Public School, and Brigidine College, Randwick. Eachschool participated in various activitiesincluding kickboxing, rock-climbing,judo and other more traditional sportssuch as soccer, ultimate frisbee, cricket

and netball.Unfortunately, Summer Hill School

(reason not specified) and St Andrew’sCollege (direct booking at SUSAC) didnot participate in the 2008 program. However, Randwick East TAFE andCarinya Special School, in addition toextra visits from Paddington PrimarySchool, made up for this loss. In term 3,Brigidine College Randwick broughtapproximately 150 students toparticipate in a Year 9 Activities Day atSydney University. This day, whichstarted in 2006, ran successfully again.Balmain Primary School also conductedan end of year activities day on-campusin term 4 for approximately 85 Year 4, 5and 6 students, delighted with thestructured and diverse program, professional coaches and excellentfacilities.

In comparison to 2007, the numberof schools participating in the programwas about the same (losing 2 schoolsand picking up 2 plus an additionalactivities day). The number of studentstaking part in the program in 2008decreased from 885 in 2007 to 810 in2008. The number of classes beingtaken dropped marginally from 38 in2007 to 36 in 2008.

The year 11 and 12 modules continueto be updated and modified to meetstudent’s needs and new equipmentincorporated into the modules. Termtwo and three remain the busiest timefor the PDHPE program and to keepup with demand we have looked intoemploying a casual staff memberduring this time in 2009.

We have seen similar success withthe Sports Medicine AwarenessCourses with participation numberscontinuing to grow and all schoolsfrom 2007 returning and completingcourses with us in 2008. Both schoolprograms met budget for the year.

Positive relationships continue tobuild between SUSF and theCynergex Group (our partner for thedelivery of accredited first aid courses)and we have had a good year withfirst aid courses. Student participationin refresher first aid and CPR coursesincreased in popularity and ourpartnership with Macquarie Hospitalremains strong. Six CPR courses wereheld at the hospital through the year.University students remain our maintarget audience with a total of 528students completing a course with usin 2008. Due to a large number ofEducation students completingcourses in 2007, we were slightlybelow budget for 2008 for first aid.Marketing and communicationstrategies have been improved withthe Education Faculty with specificgroups being targeted for next yearwhich will hopefully increase ourproductivity in 2009. Marketingadvances for first aid have allowed usto expand the business and we haveseen good enrolments from Medicine,Engineering, Colleges, Universitystaff, SUSF staff and members of thegeneral public.

In June, two major projects werecompleted at the Arena Sports Centre. The ground floor and change roomswere tiled to replace old linoleum. Airconditioning was installed in thegymnasium and coaches offices.General upkeep, these upgrades andinterior/exterior painting has had apositive impact on the many using thefacilities.

During August we submitted theDA for the Cunningham’s ReachBoathouse. Council delayed the DAwhile seeking advice from an externalconsultant, requiring further changesto the application. We have re-submitted the DA and hope to have itapproved shortly.

Glebe Boathouse saw improvementsin September. The old roof, containingasbestos, and the 25 year-old airconditioning system were replaced. Asubsequent program of minor works tothe pontoon, boatshed and changerooms was established, whichcommenced in early 2009.

The final major works for 2008 tookplace at the Sports & Aquatic Centre inDecember. Two large windows were

added to the southern wall (matchingthose at the western wall), and rows ofwindows at the top of the walls werereplaced. This has dramaticallyincreased the amount of light cominginto the pool area.

Upgrades to the box gutter outsidethe building with stainless steel shouldresolve all issues with water leaks. Aircurtains between the pool deck andthe rest of the centre were also added. The centre’s metal super-structure waspainted as a rust prevention measure.Static lines, walkways and ladders werealso added to the roof to enhancesafety.

Finally, a program was established tocomplete the remainder of work onthe Sports & Aquatic Centre for 2009.This included a refurbishment of thefoyer, the replacement of the poolplant, and the addition of a smokedetection and alarm system.

GroundsOur grounds did well, holding up toanother year of heavy use by our clubs. They remain in good condition thanksto a magnificent effort from all ourgrounds staff. The inclement weatherduring the winter football seasonrendered many surfaces unplayable attimes. Nonetheless, the wickets andsurrounds were ready for the summercricket season.

We are aware that lighting on No 2Oval and The Square needs improvingand are currently working with theUniversity on solutions.

Grounds staff were delighted totake delivery of the following newequipment during 2008: a Gatortransport vehicle, a Mentay Tow-A-Tarp, a John Deere tractor mower anda “Super Sopper.” The total value ofthese new machines wasapproximately $100k.

Facilities BudgetThe following summary is based onunaudited financial figures for 2008.

Producing ROAR Magazineinvolved writing, collating and editing42 pages of content; consultativedesign and layout of the publicationand generating advertising revenuebefore printing and distribution. In2008, a total of 8,000 copies weredistributed.

ROAR was met with very positivefeedback – some calling it the‘quintessential on-campus sportingpublication’. Plans for the future areto increase the magazine to tri-yearlyand growing distribution bases toincorporate electronic circulation. Weseek to enhance stories of our seniorelite athletes and associations withintriguing insights into the role thatSUSF is playing in their remarkablecareers.

BeijingTwenty Sydney University athletesrepresented Australia in Beijing. Theiramazing achievements generatedsignificant exposure for SUSF throughlocal and metro media outlets, particularly through the Cumberlandnewspaper group. Through variousmarketing activities – particularly webcoverage, the University was also veryaware of our athlete’s involvement, with a message of support from thenew Vice-Chancellor posted on oursite for the duration of the Olympicand Paralympic Games.

MembershipVarious targeted annual membershipand facility fitness pass campaignswere run throughout 2008. The firstand traditionally the largest campaignwas O’Week.

Although being one of thestrongest membership weeks of theyear, O’Week failed to reach the

AFTER strategicallyplanning there-branding of theorganisation, 2008offered the challengingopportunity to publicly

rollout a revitalised image and identity. We benefitted from an increased

commercial focus, with targetedpromotional activities to segmentedaudience groups both on and off-campus, driven by a Marketingdepartment now in its second formalyear of operation. While the re-brandwas undoubtedly the biggest projectand achievement of 2008, supportingour Olympians’ Beijing campaigns, launching ROAR magazine and regularmembership promotional campaignswere also of major importance.

There was a substantial change withinthe Marketing department staffing. After passionately driving the re-brandthrough research and concept stages toa successful roll-out as Marketing &Memberships Manager, Michael Crumpleft SUSF and was replaced by RossXenos in July.

MARKETING AND MEMBERSHIPMARKETING AND MEMBERSHIP THE BIRTH OF SUSF.

RebrandingThe birth of the new Sydney Uni Sport &Fitness brand occurred on January 1,2008 followed by the intricate process ofre-identifying the organisation. Thisencompassed the update of physicalfacility and directional signage, staffuniforms, a new website and a newbranded publication – ROAR magazine.

WebsiteLaunched on February 18,www.susf.com.au tremendouslyimproved the online personality of thenew Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness. Aswell as refreshing information from theprevious website, the new site exposedthe new brand, with a fresh, contemporary colour scheme. A newcontent management platform enablesdirect-integration between theGladstone Member RelationshipManagement system. The new site, through revisions to plug-in applications, now generates more statistics on sitetraffic and is an important tool formarketing feedback.

On average, throughout 2008, thefollowing statistics define monthly trafficto the site:• Average site visitations – 11,000• Average page viewing – 33,700• Average time spent navigating site

per visit – 2:42• Percentage of new visitors – 61%

ROAR MagazineOne of the year’s most significantachievements was the birth of ROARMagazine.

Replacing the SUS Handbook, ROARMagazine is a bi-yearly, all-in-one topicaland informational publicationinnovatively showcasing the products, services, programs and benefits ofSydney Uni Sport & Fitness to bothon- and off-campus communities.

Designed in association with brandconsultant agency RGC, ROAR attractedpromotions and paid advertising frominternal and external stakeholders. The

heights of success that it had beenearmarked for. An unfortunateculmination of poor weather and ITproblems were largely to blame for thelack of traffic and poor conversion ofpassing traffic. However week one ofSemester proved strong to regainsome of the ground lost in the weekprior.

In May, an innovative fitness passcampaign was conducted, offering 2weeks of Gold Membership access foronly $25. The campaign was targetedat enticing new members toexperience an SUSF membership, aswell as allowing current members theoption to experience the benefits of anupgrade to the highest pass level. Withover 430 individuals taking up the offer,it was an enormous success. Most

pleasing was that almost 20% of trailersrolled onto another term membershippass – taking total campaign revenueto approximately $58,000.

September saw another innovativecampaign succeed with a broad targetaudience. The ‘Win a 48cm TV/DVD’campaign gave all new and renewingmembers an entry into the draw to winthe main prize. The campaign attracted187 entrants, raising over $61,000 inpass revenues. The open, all inclusivenature of the campaign, matched witha low cost per entrant in promotionalexpenditure, achieved an impressivereturn on investment.

Frontline ServiceSupported by a new, united brand,SUSF customer service staff of on-campus facilities are at the ‘Frontline’of our operations. Understanding this,a consultative process was undertakenwith all Frontline staff, including CentreManagers and Shift Supervisors, todevelop a new service mission andobjectives through the end of 2008.

New service frameworks were

developed and communicated toFrontline staff through a series oftraining workshops, commencing inNovember. The implementation of newservice strategies has been met withgood feedback from staff and has seenan improvement in the standards ofservice to SUSF’s stakeholders.

2008 was an Olympicyear, which resulted inthe ‘Blue & Gold’ Clubstaging more functionsfor members who are allsporting alumni and/or

supporters of sport at SydneyUniversity.

Functions in 2008The eleventh consecutive annual ‘Blue& Gold’ Cricket Luncheon took place atTattersalls Club on Friday February 29.

The entertainment commenced withAdam Spencer interviewing the twomost recent SUCC 1st XI captains,Greg Mail and Shane Stanton, plus twoAustralian Women’s Test cricketers –the Blackwell twins, Alex and Kate –who are also key members of theUniversities Women’s 1st XI.

Later that afternoon, Mike Coward, one of Australia’s most experiencedcricket writers and commentators, reviewed the season’s “intensecompetition” between Australia andIndia plus the likely impact of the IPLTwenty20 player auction andsubsequent Twenty20 competition.Mike’s panel comprised threeprominent members of thesubcontinent press – Khalid Ansari,Debasish Datta and Nagraj Gollapudi.

The annual ‘Blue & Gold’ Aussie RulesLuncheon took place at the FourSeasons Hotel on Friday 11th April.

Adam Spencer moderated a panel oflegendary Sydney Swans’ players: LeoBarry the champion fullback, JudeBolton the specialist midfielder andMichael O’Loughlin the game’s recordholder. Experienced ‘Blue & Gold’campaigners declared that Adam’splayer interviews were the mostentertaining they had ever seen!

The laughter continued whenimpersonator Andrew Startinintroduced our luncheon guests to AFLcommentators Bruce McAvaney, SamNewman and Denis Cometi plus someof their cricket counterparts, notably

Richie Benaud and Tony Greig.

An Olympic FeastThe ‘Blue & Gold’ Olympic Dinner wasa splendid occasion in The Great Hallon Wednesday 7th May – just threemonths prior to the Beijing OpeningCeremony.

The keynote speaker was alumnusJohn Coates AC – the Chef de Missionof all Australian Olympic teams sinceSeoul in 1988. John provided ourguests with fascinating insights intoBeijing’s Olympic preparations andmade very encouraging predictions(which subsequently proved to be veryaccurate) about Australia’s medal tallyat the 2008 Olympic and ParalympicGames.

Adam Spencer moderated a panel ofprevious Sydney Uni Olympians (ChrisFydler - swimming gold medallist; PeterMontgomery – 4 time Olympicwaterpolo player; Natalie Porter –

basketball silver medallist and LianeTooth – dual hockey gold medallist)and another panel of Beijing-boundSydney Uni Olympians (canoeist RobinBell, waterpolo player Trent Franklin,800m runner Lachlan Renshaw andwheelchair basketballer Sarah Stewart).

Debating RugbyThe twelfth consecutive annual ‘Blue &Gold’ Rugby Luncheon was held atTattersalls Club on Friday 25th July.

Adam Spencer moderated anentertaining panel discussion, whichinvolved SUFC First Grade coaches,Damien Hill and Trevor Woodman, plusSUFC senior players, Tom Carter (whohad just completed a stellar Super 14season with the NSW Waratahs) andTim Davidson (who has now captainedSydney Uni to four consecutive ShuteShield victories).

The principal entertainment that daywas the annual ‘Blue & Gold’ debate,

which this year saw The Gentlemen ofRugby (James O’Loghlin and RobCarlton) successfully assert that “Rugbyunion should be reinstated as anOlympic sport”. Although soundlydefeated for the twelfth consecutiveyear, the Low-Life Academia team(Adam Spencer and Rhys Muldoon)were extremely amusing. Unfortunately, they once again fell foul of a totally andunashamedly biased adjudicator – theformer Australian Rugby UnionPresident, Mr PL Harry!

Celebrating BeijingThe ‘Blue & Gold’ Olympic CelebrationLunch was held at the Four SeasonsHotel Sydney on Friday 29th August inhonour of the twenty 2008 Sydney UniOlympians, who competed with greatdistinction at the Beijing Olympic andParalympic Games.

After welcoming home the athletes,Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spencepresented each of them with a print ofa clever montage, comprising art cardpictures of the twenty 2008 Sydney UniOlympians in Beijing. During thispresentation ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor was assisted by SUSFExecutive Director, Robert Smithies, and by Simon Fieldhouse, the artistwho created the montage.

The principal entertainment that daywas Adam Spencer’s moderation oftwo very lively panels, each involvingfour of the 2008 Sydney Uni Olympians. The first panel comprised Australia’sfirst female Olympic wrestler, Dr KylaBremner; women’s 10m platform diver,Alex Croak; the coxswain of the men’srowing eight, Marty Rabjohns, andmen’s waterpolo vice-captain, ThomasWhalan. The second panel comprisedmen’s C1 slalom canoe bronzemedallist, Robin Bell; women’swaterpolo bronze medallist, TanieleGofers; men’s coxless four rowing silvermedallist, Francis Hegerty, and ouryoung 800m runner, Lachlan Renshaw.

Golf TraditionsThe annual SUSF/Blues Association“Traditional” Golf Day was held at StMichael’s Golf Club on Wednesday 8thOctober.

The size of the field was less thanprevious years, but the enjoymentfactor was higher than ever. The Farr-Jones team disappointed when captainMax was once again unable to control

his three boys – Peter, Nick and Simon! The team event was actually won bythe lads from Killara Golf Club –Richard Debenham, Terry Gilchrist, IanTonkin and Adrian Young.

The twelfth consecutive ‘Blue &Gold’ Xmas Hamper Golf Day was onceagain held at the New South WalesGolf Club on Tuesday 25th November.

Twenty teams competed for theChancellor’s Cup, which was won bythe Finn Foster APB team. 2nd and 3rdplaces were filled by teams featuringSydney University sporting alumni – theSt Vincent’s Clinic team (Chris Browne,Michael Neil, Martin Sullivan and NickVertzyas) and the euphemisticallyentitled “Men About Town” team(Campbell Anderson, Stewart Boyce,

Graham Hurst and Arthur Johnson). There were lots of laughs during the

presentation ceremony – none more sothan when Australia’s modern dayBanjo Patterson, Murray Hartin, recitedsome of his wonderfully amusingverses. As always … everyone was awinner on the day, because allparticipants took home splendid Xmashampers.

Flames Burn BrightThe Flames’ Silver Jubilee Luncheonwas held in the Anchorage Room atWatersEdge Restaurant on Thursday4th December.

170 guests were thoroughlyentertained by Adam Spencer’s panels, the first of which comprised fourplayers with more than 1,000 Opals’appearances between them: KarenDalton, Trish Fallon, Robyn Maher andMichele Timms. These four championAustralian athletes enthusiasticallyrecounted past escapades, all of whichoccurred off the court!

Adam’s subsequent panellists wereall members of the current ACUVUESydney Uni Flames WNBL team. Our

highly prized imported players, LindseyPluimer and Rhonda Price, providedsome fascinating insights into theirbasketball backgrounds. A verymotivated Eva Afeaki impressed theaudience with her determination tobecome an Opals player and AliciaPoto, our team captain and many timesAustralian representative, promisedthat the ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flameswould win their next three consecutivehome games. The Flames dulydelivered those three victories in thesecond week of December!

This luncheon was the first ‘Blue &Gold’ sporting function dedicated tofemale sport. It was a great publicrelations exercise for the ACUVUESydney Uni Flames and it raised some

useful dollars towards the funding ofour WNBL franchise.

FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup,and Charlotte Walters, whorepresented Australia in the World U23Rowing Championships. We werethrilled that our scholarship holdershad such success in their sport during2008.

We were also very proud ofthe 15 Sydney University Bluesrepresenting Australia at the Olympicsand Paralympics in Beijing, namely,

Robin Bell and Lachlan Milne incanoe/kayaking, Trent Franklin, RobMaitland, Sam McGregor, ThomasWhalan and Taniele Gofers in waterpolo, Liz Kell, Francis Hegerty andMarty Rabjohns in rowing, Alex Croakin diving, Kyla Bremner in wrestling,Megan Rivers in hockey, Angie Ballardin wheelchair track and field and SarahStewart in wheelchair basketball.

Function HighlightsAs usual the Pin Function at TheGrandstand on 1 August proved to bea highlight of the year. Over 100people attended and had lots of fun, watching pins being presented tothose who received their Blue in a yearending in “8”, listening to some oftheir own being interviewed andreminiscing on days and feats ofyears ago.

Chairman of the Senate SportsLiaison Committee, John McCarthy QC,presented the pins and endorsed theBlues program in getting the sportingalumni of the University to continuetheir support of University activities. The year ended with the traditionalBlues Dinner held in the Great Hall on15 November and the presentation of22 Blues and 4 Gold awards. Sadly ourformer Chancellor and Rowing Bluefrom 1963, Justice Kim Santow, hadpassed away suddenly after a relativelyshort illness. Only two years previouslyhe had garbed the new Blues!

Guest speaker, Olympian TrentFranklin (water polo Blue1999) usedpractical demonstrations with AdamSpencer’s cooperation to illustratepoints in his talk. Adam followed upby interviewing scholarship holders,Melissa Hammond and CharlotteWalters, as well as Olympic athleteLachlan Renshaw (Matt Jaukovic whowas overseas with the Australian Swimteam at the time). While Chancellor,Governor Marie Bashir was unable toattend, it was very pleasing towelcome our new Vice Chancellor DrMichael Spence who presented thecertificates and made theannouncement of the Blues of theYear: Keesja Gofers (the AlisonHattersley Trophy) and LachlanRenshaw (the John Sykes Trophy).

Our congratulations go to Dr PhilHarris, boat Blue 1964, who receivedan AM in the Australia Day HonoursList as well as to Dr Malcolm Stening, hockey Blue 1937, and Mrs PatriciaGeidans former President of SUWSA,who both received OAMs.

Further, and as anintegral part of the launch of the Colts, the club has started to work closelywith the development and recruitmentstaff of the Collingwood Football Club.It is to be hoped that this relationshipbenefits both clubs for years to come.

As well as these off fielddevelopments, SUANFC was proud tobuild on our efforts to support localjunior football, and were honoured tobe part of bringing the Peres Centrefor Peace Team to the University.

On the field, the Seniors fellagonisingly short of the finals but itwas positive to be in the position to bechallenging for a finals berth in itssecond year back in the PremierDivision. The Reserves were theoutstanding achievers of the year witha fantastic finals performance takingthem to the grand final. The Blues mayhave lost the grand final to PennantHills but they have done so well thatthey have been promoted twodivisions. 2008 was one of the bestseasons ever by a Reds squad, withencouraging training attendance anddevelopment of the playing group.

SUANFC would like to acknowledgeits sponsors, the Forest Lodge Hotel,Sydney City Toyota and Scooteria;Sydney University Sport & Fitness;former VC Gavin Brown for his supportof sport at the University; the SUANFCcommittee and all members andsupporters of SUANFC.

AFL WomenThe Sydney University Women’sAustralian Football Club (SUWAFC)fielded one side in the 2008 SydneyWomen’s AFL (SWAFL) competition.Following the 2007 Premiership it

proved to be a rebuilding year due toseveral retirements by club stalwarts.SUWAFC finished in fourth position(unable to proceed beyond theelimination semi-final) which was anachievement given the number ofrookies who had been brought intothe side.

SUWAFC had its second player(Gianna Abbonizio) pass the 100 gamemilestone, with Bryony Cole and EmmaYuen notching up 50 games. Another

season highlight for some members ofSUWAFC was being approached tofeature on an edition of SaturdayDisney promoting female participationin AFL.

With the absence of the Women’sAFL Nationals in 2008 (now held everysecond year) no NSW side wasselected. Instead, a “SWAFL Team of2008” was announced, with SUWAFC’sGianna Abbonizio and Emma Yuenbeing named in the squad. Emma Yuen

American FootballAt season end the Sydney UniversityLions American Football Club have

extended their winning streak to 33games with a record over the last 6seasons of 72-2. What does 2009 holdfor the Lions? Another year ofdedication, hard work and qualityfootball, and the opportunity to be thebest team in NSW.

The U18 Colts had a rough year justmissing out on making the playoffsafter a promising season. After beingwell coached by our two Americanimports Brad Ryals and Colby Myers, with the assistance of Andrew Mathews, the Colts showed a great deal ofpromise in the early stages of theseason. However, a tough draw and afew close games saw the Colts falter atthe playoffs. With the return of many ofthese players and some promisingyoung talent we are hoping to makethe playoffs under the tutelage of HeadCoach David Thode in 2009.

After an arduous pre-season trainingprogram the senior team were grindingour teeth in anticipation for our firstgame of the season. Head CoachStephen Dunne and Defensive Co-Coordinator Ryan Wonser had put usthrough our paces for months inpreparation for a hard season. Afterbeing scheduled to play the BondiRaiders, and that game beingabandoned due to inclement weather, our first game of the year came against

our archrivals. Labelled the ‘Brain Bowl’we were up against the UTS Gators.True to Lions history against UTS, wewere clinical in a dominant 42-0performance. The season started offwhere we had left it in 2007. Ourregular 10 game season continued inmuch the same fashion with the Lionsscoring 504 points at 45.8 per gameand our stellar defence held ouropposition to 66 points at 6 per game. Our highlight of the regular seasonwould have to be our performanceagainst the West Sydney Pirates in the6th round where we came outvictorious 14-0 after a hard foughtdefensive battle. The toughest battle ofthe year would turn out to be replayedcome Championship day in earlyDecember.

After rolling the Sutherland Seahawksin the semis we were on our way to our19th championship game in our 25-yearhistory and our 10th straightChampionship appearance. On aperfect day at Campbelltown SportsStadium we had the opportunity tomake history in the NSWGFL bybecoming the first team to win 6straight Waratah Bowl titles. In athrilling battle of offences we came outvictorious after four very hard quartersof quality football. The game wasclinched late in the fourth quarter witha final score of 38-34. It was definitelyone of the most entertaining games theleague has seen and showed how closethe competition was between the topranked teams. Our running backMatthew Croasdaile was named theChampionship MVP racking up 211rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on theday.

Competition has been quiet this year, with a few of our members enteringclub and state tournaments. Onehighlight was a first place at State ShortCourse in Open Barebow Recurve. Like2007, the club will have a strongturnout at the end of year City ofSydney Tournament, with one newmember making his competition debut.

In semester two the club ran its firstarchery beginners course as part ofSUSF short courses program. Thesecourses proved to be popular, withboth sessions booked out. It hasprovided extra exposure to the cluband has resulted in some new membersjoining the club after completing thecourse.

2009 will hopefully see morecompetition entries, with a number ofthe new members at a level to startcompeting. Also we look forward tohaving new faces helping out with theclub’s management, carrying on fromthe work and dedication of theprevious members.

BadmintonSydney University Badminton Club(SUBC) started the year with 50members. More people wanted to joinduring the year and the club finishedwith over 70 members, a substantiallyhigher number than last year. One ofthe greatest challenges in successfullyrunning a club is the amount ofregistered members, thus our aim forthe future will be to promote SUBC andlet it continually expand.

Two teams in two different divisionsentered the Interclub competition thisyear. The results were satisfactory andwe are proud to have dedicatedmembers representing SUBC everyyear. Around mid-august, we held adoubles tournament with many playersfrom all over Sydney entering. Thesuccess of this led us to believe that byholding two tournaments next year, itwill be an excellent way for fundraising

BasketballSydney University Basketball Club(SUBC) entered two teams into thehighly competitive Division 1 Men'scompetition at Norths. Despite manynew and young faces our first divisionteam, led by veteran Ben Turner, qualified for a playoff appearance. Dueto AUG commitments our SydneyUniversity side was unable to compete.

With new coach Ben Osbourne onboard our men were able to grab abronze medal at the ECC. The team ledby stand-out veteran James MacCannwas complemented by some new facesand second year players. Thecontinued hard work and effort to joinrepresentative teams by the boys hasseen an improvement in results overprevious years. At AUG's the boys weremet with better quality opponents andshould be commended for making theplayoffs. The overall commitment andhard work by the Sydney UniversityBasketball Men is to be commendedhowever continued hard work will seeeven better accomplishments next year.

The women's basketball teams havehad an outstanding year. We have hada lot of new faces this year with someamazing talent. We entered threeteams into the club competition atSydney City Basketball. All teams didvery well. Our first team won DivisionOne, progressing to Premier League. The commitment to training and gameshas been impressive, mainly due to our

awesome coach Vlad Alava. It is greatto see the girls having fun andimproving together.

The women's team won the ECCcompetition, undefeated. The girlsbeat every team convincingly. For thefirst time we also entered a social teamwhich was a great way for our regularclub players to see how representativesport works. At AUG's our girls teamwon Division 2 undefeated. Theyperformed brilliantly as a team, especially in their tough final match.Particular mention to Melissa Smith, who was chosen in the Green and Goldteam, the only person from Division 2to be selected. Thecombined knowledge and experienceof all coaches has greatly improved thefitness, defence skills and sparringabilities of all club members.

On August 6th SUBxC hosted theSydney University Intercollegiate Boxingtournament on No. 1 Oval in front of 400spectators. Eight bouts were held withpoints averaged on the collegeparticipants, the last bout decided if StPaul’s won outright or a three way tie. A

valiant effort by Dr Branieff found himflagging in the last round and the pointsswinging to St John’s.

This year the State Championshipswere held at Blacktown RSL on theweekend of the 18-19th October.Coach Greg Stanton took one of hisnew charges, Oleg Ilkinou. Olegcompeted in the light heavy weightcompetition, 75-81kg. Tiring in the lastround gave opportunity for hisopponent to pull ahead on points.Oleg now has the advantage ofknowing the required level of fitnessand skill required and is keen to tryagain in 2009.

SUBxC celebrated its centenary in2008 with a dinner at the Grandstandoverlooking No 1 Oval, the same ovalwhere the first competition was held in1908. The Sydney University BoxingClub Chapter of the Sydney UniversitySports Foundation was launched at thedinner. CanoeSydney University Canoe Club (SUCC)got off to a good start with someentertaining beginner trips for thosewho had recently joined. The paddleon Sydney Harbour saw a bunch ofbeginners cause havoc in the shippinglane while a trip up to the BarringtonRiver provided some entertainment asthe beginners learned how to navigatethrough rapids, rocks and trees. DuringEaster the more experienced paddlersheaded up the coast to the NymboidaRiver which was a lot higher than theprevious years. The trip became quitean epic with many swims and a foldedcanoe.

The club was fortunate this year, theSydney Catchment Authority pumpedup water from Tallowa Dam all yearproviding excellent challengingwhitewater down the WingecarribeeRiver all winter. This is a superb 16kmstretch of mainly grade 3-4 rapids that

runs through some impressive sceneryand ends at a nudist camp.

The most memorable trip washowever the trip down to theMurrumbidgee and Molongolo Rivers. The water was low but a soliddownpour overnight made things quiteinteresting. Three broken paddles, dislocated shoulder and a brokenfinger made for a very memorableMolongolo first descent. TheMurrumbidgee wasn’t any easier. Onepaddler got stuck in a hole until thestrong current ripped away his paddleand camera that was attached to hisvest. Everyone survived but by the timewe paddled to the measuring gauge halfway down the river the water had risen bya metre. Some chose to walk out, whilethe remainder took their chances. Luckilythere were no further incidents. Othernotable river trips included the Murray,Kangaroo and the Thredbo Rivers while

the lifts were still running and snow couldstill be seen on the banks.

In calmer waters, the marathoncontingent of SUCC strengthened overthe year, and a few members enjoyed the111km of pain in the Hawkesbury Classic, while others opted for the perhapsmilder option of a casual paddle on theLane Cove River each Wednesday night.Canoe Polo is always a hit and was upand running again this year.

Between rains there were many tripsout to Penrith Whitewater Stadiumwhere even complete beginners canhave fun in the inflatable 2-person rafts.

Cycling and TriathlonSydney University Cycling and TriathlonClub, like many clubs, suffered fromnon-participation in O-Week due to thehigh costs charged by the UniversityStudent Union. During 2008 ourmembership numbers reached an alltime low to the extent that we initiateddiscussions with Sydney Uni Sport andFitness about methods of resurrectingthe sport on campus or at least savingit from extinction. Following thatmeeting steps have been takentowards winding up the SydneyUniversity Cycling and Triathlon Cluband incorporating our activities withinthe Sydney University Athletics Club.We are very grateful for the lifeline theyhave thrown us and anticipate approvalfrom the Management and GeneralCommittee in early 2009 to see thishappen. From 2009 cycling andtriathlon activities will be managed by asubcommittee of the Sydney UniversityAthletics Club and continue to have apresence on campus and at club andintervarsity meets. Under their strongumbrella, it is anticipated that bothsports will most likely flourish.

KendoSydney University Kendo Club (SUKC)has seen its membership continue togrow with new beginners and oldmembers returning to continue theirkendo journey. The strength andreputation of our club has increasedwith many of our members comingfrom other universities who have theirown club.

Our members participated in all ofthe major competitions held in NSW

including the 33rd Australian KendoChampionships at UNSW over theEaster break in the individual Kyucompetition. The club also competedin the Dae Han Moo do Kwan OpenInvitational with a 3rd in the individualDan event then the NSW StateChampionships with 3rd in the Kyuindividuals and 2nd in the Danindividuals.

Sadly, this year SUKC was not able tosecure our 4th win at the AUG’s inMelbourne, however we did very wellto finish 2nd and 3rd in the Kyu andDan teams events respectively. The lossmotivated our members who aredetermined to bring the championshipback to Sydney Uni in 2009. With onlylimited experience, these resultsshowed the strength and quality of ournew generation and great potential forimprovement. Special mention to JinnyLai who placed 4th in the Women’sDivision, Nelson Kam and WalterChung who placed 5th in the Open KyuDivision, and Ervin Peng for obtainingGreen and Gold. The members of theclub who participated also hadgoodwill practice sessions at a numberof the Melbourne based clubs fosteringinter-club relationships.

The club hosted two highly

respected and well-known Sensei’sfrom Japan as part of the FoundersCup weekend. Oda Sensei (HachidanIaido) and Chiba Sensei (HachidanKendo) held several seminars in theirspecialty over the course of the fourdays they were in Sydney.

Looking into the future, besides newplans for training methods andrecruiting, the club is currentlynegotiating with Redfern Town Hall touse their facilities for night training sothat our members who are no longerstudents can keep in touch with theclub. We look forward to repeating thisyear’s success and doing better in thefuture.

team is arguably the strongest the clubhas seen in recent years - we lookforward to what’s in store next season.

Division 2 had a rather challengingseason, given the high standard of thecompetition. Under the pressures oftheir tough opponents, this season wasboth physically and mentally trying, butthe team’s constant display ofsportsmanship, and performance intheir final matches, must becommended,

Division 7 proved the biggest successof the club this year – giving SUNC itsfirst ever State League premiership. The Division 7 team beat minorpremiers and long time rivals ManlyWarringah in a nail biting grand final. The team’s talent and skills wereevident throughout the season, but itwas their performance in the grandfinal that truly displayed their character, storming back in the final minutes totake a 45-44 victory. This win istestament to their hard work anddedication to the club and to eachother.

The AUG teams displayed greatsportsmanship and talent inMelbourne. Women's and mixed teamsboth performed exceptionally wellunder the pressure of their strongcompetition, and specialcongratulations must go to Erin Bellwho was awarded Green and Gold.

Landell Archer was crowned 2008Dooleys State League Player of theYear and was awarded ‘The NanceKenny Medal’. This is an outstandingachievement for Landell. Furthercongratulations must go to LizBornstein, the recipient of a Blue thisyear. Outside of the University, Liz’stalent has been recognized within thenetball community on a State andNational level.

This season was only made possiblethrough the hard work, time and effortsof others. SUNC would like to thank allof the coaches, managers andassistants. They are the backbone toour club, and provide unwaveringsupport to our players throughout theseason, on and off the court. Inparticular, SUNC would like to thankCoach Lisa McConchie. Hercommitment to SUNC and the playersover the years has been remarkableand she has, in every aspect of her

coaching, gone above and beyond. Weare very sad to lose Lisa as she reducesher commitment to the netball world tospend more time with her family.

We are looking forward to an excitingseason next year, with a newlyestablished and highly motivatedcommittee, a new joint venture withCity of Sydney Netball Association anda brand new coaching staff. The futurefor this Premiership Winning Club lookspromising!

Rockclimbing and MountaineeringSydney University Rockclimbing andMountaineering Club (SURMC)members were busy climbing all overAustralia in friendly competitions andof course hanging out at the Ledge andthe Forest Lodge hotel afterwards. Thepub this year drew a particularly largecrowd. The awesome climbing stencilsin the graffiti tunnel were the highlightof a soggy O-Week where a healthynumber of members joined.

Our budget this year went mainlytowards replacing some older ropesand self rescue courses to give clubmembers the skills and confidence torun trips in 2009, as trip leaders were inshort supply in 2008.

Early in the year, trips were focusedon getting new climbers on rock, withbeginner trips being run to MountPiddington in the Blue Mountains andBarrenjoey near Palm Beach. Theseenjoyable trips succeeded in getting anumber of new faces hooked onclimbing. A second round of trips wasalso run at the start of semester 2including another Mt Piddington tripand to Medlow Bath.

Over Easter members spread out tocover as much rock as possible, including the inevitable trek down toMount Arapiles in central westernVictoria. Closer to home there wasclimbing in Nowra and the WolganValley in the Blue Mountains. Near theend of first semester a friendly climbingcompletion was kindly set up by Phil atthe Ledge which was great fun withopen and beginner men and women allhaving a terrific time on the routes andchallenges Phil set up.

The semester break saw another roadtrip, this time to Frog Buttress inQueensland. It was a great trip; newer

members started learning theintricacies of traditional lead climbingand the more experienced tried theirluck against the soaring crack climbsthat the area is famous for.

The Interclub Climbing competitionwas held with great success at theLedge. Climbing and outdoor clubsfrom Sydney Uni, UNSW and UTS alltook part. Phil Staples set up someawesome routes to challengebeginners and experts alike as well asother fun team challenges includingprussic race and the blindfolded gearpack up. SURMC won overall, in front ofUTS and UNSW as well as 1st, 2nd and3rd place in both the open and novicemen’s categories. Open Women’s waswon by Fiona Thompson, BeginnerWomen’s by Karoline Riou andBeginner Men’s by Thomas Chow. Some great prizes for both individualsand clubs were provided by MountainEquipment.

A self rescue course, run by mountainguide Mic Rofe, was attended byMichael Lee, Dean Hillan, Georgi Knox,Katie Phillips, David Dearnley andEugene Tam. All learnt lots of new skillsto help them manage any situationwhere things don’t quite go accordingto plan. Backcountry, snow and iceskills were the order of the day duringthe august trip to Blue Lake in theSnowy Mountains.

Point Perpendicular was anotherlocation receiving a fair bit of attentionthis year seeing SURMC members inboth April and October. The hugevertical sea cliffs on the northern side ofJervis Bay provide great climbing in ahighly scenic and tremendouslyexposed position high above theocean.

In what is sure to become a moreregular occurrence, the Beer andBouldering (and slack lining) day on21st September in Queens Park wasanother highlight of 2008. A beautifulday, a wide variety of boulderingproblems, cold beverages and a slackline in the trees meant there wassomething for everyone.

A highly enjoyable dinner, organisedby Dean Hillan and Maddy D’Arcy, atthe Nags Head hotel on 21stNovember finished off 2008. Here thephotography and writing awards werejudged. James Hendersen took out the

Rugby LeagueSydney University Rugby League Club(SURLC) enjoyed its first year back into1st Grade after winning the 2nd Gradegrand final in 2007. We ran with oneteam in 2007 but managed two teamsin the Tertiary Cup competition in 2008.The club will continue to grow in 2009with more players, sponsors andofficials.

SURLC had one of the higheststudent representations in thecompetition with plenty of talent ondisplay. The season started slowly butwe managed to make it to the majorsemi final where we lost the CSU

(Police Service) in the dying minutes ofthe game. We had knocked overcompetition leaders and favorites forthe title, UTS in the previous weekwhich was the game of the season. The 1st Grade team was coached byMichael Axlander and managed by JimPizanias who did an excellent jobpreparing the team. They were wellsupported by trainer Steve Freebornand Ted Hansen.

Our 2nd Grade team started strongbut ran out of puff in the last part of theseason and just missed out on makingthe finals. They showed plenty ofcourage and were always willing tosupport 1st Grade. It was good to seenew talent developed over the season. We also saw new players to the gamewho played their first game of rugbyleague. 2nd Grade was helped byplayers Nick Forwood, Luke Meredithand Sean Ryan.

Five players made the NSWCombined University side which playedQueensland at WIN Stadium inWollongong before the City vs Countrymatch: Matt Warren, Murat Yildirim,Brendan Lee, Adam Hansen and DanielDenford. Four students also made theHellenic Rugby League side whichplayed in Brisbane as part of the RugbyLeague World Cup: York Antoniou,Stuart Philpot, Sam Mournehis and PaulSalamakis.

The season ahead is shaping to bebigger with aggressive playerrecruitment. We have been in talksabout the possibility of fielding a sidein the Jim Beam Cup competition for2010 season. Several NRL clubs haveexpressed interest as being a partner inthe venture.

I would like to thank the sponsors fortheir support: Duck and Swan Hotel,Macarthur Podiatry Group, MaximHome Loans and Foot Focus. Theyhave all confirmed for sponsorship for2009.

The club exists for the benefit of thestudents and players. The executive iscommitted to making this clubprosperous and successful, for all of usto look back with fond memories andpride.

coaches Damien Hill, Trevor Woodmanand Anthony Eddy on guiding thefortunes of the team. Having alreadysecured the minor premiership, the 45-20 grand final result over Randwick wasa marvellous finale to the season.

My congratulations also extend toour three Colts teams, who each wontheir minor premierships and eachsuccessfully defended their titles. Thiswas also history in the making. Thecommitment and sportsmanship of thethree Colts grades was something tobehold, with Thirds beating Manly afterthe bell and Seconds coming frombehind in the second half to defeatEasts, before Firsts turned in a clinicaldisplay to defeat Easts and remainundefeated in 2008.

Congratulations to all colts’ playersand coaches, and particularly ourCoaching Co-ordinator Nick Ryan, whose record over the past six seasonsis phenomenal.

I also don't want to forget the FourthGrade side, that almost caused a hugeupset against Randwick. Randwick hadgone through the competitionundefeated, compiling over 1,100points along the way. Come the grandfinal we led 14-10 midway through thesecond half before succumbing 24-14,three tries to two. It was a gallant effort, well done to all involved.

Needless to say, with five of our eightteams in grand finals, we retained theoverall Club Championship for the fifthseason in a row and the Eric SpilsteadColts Club Championship, for thefourth successive season. We won TheSydney Morning Herald Club of theYear award as well. Sydney Universityplayers Daniel Halangahu and NathanCharles were also awarded The SydneyMorning Herald Player of the Year andRookie of the Year respectively.

To win four titles speaks volumes forthe commitment and ability of ourcoaches, players, managers, fitnesstrainers, medical staff and volunteers. Ahearty thankyou and congratulations toeach and every one of you; you’vemade the club and its supporters veryproud.

With the demise of the AustralianRugby Championship, we returned to atraditional 22-round Shute Shieldcompetition this season. This is a true

test of a club’s strength through theGrades and Colts, and as the resultsshow, we rose to the challenge.

From the base to the pyramid, congratulations to our host ofrepresentative players in Super 14teams, Australian Sevens, AustralianU20 and Australia A, and particularly toPhil Waugh and Dean Mumm, who arerepresenting Australia on theWallabies’ Spring tour of Europe.

Rugby Union WomenOn the playing field it was a fantasticseason for Sydney Uni’s rugby womendespite the loss of some veryexperienced players and the loss of afantastic coach in Kelly McCallum fromthe 2007 season. The arrival of somenew players to the team added to theteam’s strengths and helped Uni all theway to the grand final in 2008 withsome very convincing performances inthe weeks leading up to it. We werealso the only team to beat the eventualgrand final champions, Warringah.

Unfortunately the club could notsecure a regular coach and had theinvolvement of three coaches over thecourse of the season as this was theonly amount of time they were allavailable for.

Our season saw nine players makethe Sydney representative side thatwon the National Championship heldon the Gold Coast in July, with SydneyUni stalwart Rachelle Pirie captainingthe side to a narrow win in the final overQueensland. We also had two playersin the Sydney 2nd side and two playersselected in the Defence Forces side. With a total of 13 players involvedSydney University had the highestrepresentation of all clubs at thechampionship.

This year also saw two of the SydneyUni forwards, Alex Hargreaves and KatePorter, selected in the AustralianWomen’s side in the autumn testsagainst NZ. Club MVP of the year, halfback Faryaneh Hayati, was alsoinvolved in the National 15’s and 7’ssquads but unfortunately sustained aknee injury in the final againstParramatta which ended her seasonprematurely and she was a notable lossto Sydney Uni in the grand final.

The season concluded with anawards night in our new sponsor venue, the Hampshire Hotel. MVP aspreviously mentioned went to FaryanehHayati; Best Back to centre, KellyDucker; Best Forward to flanker, RoisinMcNulty; and Most Improved to winger,Kristi Beynon.

Off the field it was also a successful

year. There was change in thecommittee with Rachelle Pirie comingin as the new President. Despite thelack of sponsorship for the season, theclub managed to sustain itself well withfundraising and ended the year with asurplus. Sailing and BoardsailingSince the beginning of 2008, theSydney Uni Sailing Club has re-established itself as a successful clubwith a bright future. In 2007, a new

committee set about rebuilding a clubthat was close to collapse. Aftercompleting the much neededmaintenance on the club boats thathad made them inoperable the clubwas ready for service.

We participated in O-Week andrecruited a strong membership base. The new members, along with a fewuncertain potentials members, thenattended the Club’s first open day for2008 which allowed the new membersto meet, see the way the Club operatesas well as take the challenge of sailing ashort race course on a hydraulic sailingsimulator. The simulator allows athletesto hone their skills by replicating thetechniques for tacks and gybes undercontrolled weather conditions. The clubhopes to further utilize this equipmentin 2009 for the advancement of racingmembers with the support of BethwaiteDesign, the designer of the 49erOlympic class based Woollahra SailingClub.

The Club organized a number ofevent fundraisers for the purchase ofnew equipment and boats. Theestablishment of the Sailing ClubFoundation marks a significant changein approach to fundraising activitiesthat will allow for the furtherdevelopment of the club. Bycooperating with Alumni Services as

well as the many local sailing clubsaround Sydney Harbour, it will be ableto raise the necessary funds.

In 2008 we became an affiliated clubof Yachting New South Wales for thefirst time. This will give the Club theopportunity for greater engagement inthe NSW sailing community and betterpublicise our events and activities.Yachting NSW also plays a significantrole in the planning of many of thelarge NSW regatta events heldthroughout the year. It is this expertisethat the club aims to benefit from in thefuture in the planning of its events.

The new websitewww.usydsailing.com first went live inlate 2007 in preparation for 2008 O-Week. Since then, the site has becomea hub of information about sailing inSydney as well as providing a muchneeded means for communication withmembers. In late 2008, theestablishment of a ‘Crew Search Forum’was made to create a link betweenuniversity students and the Sydneysailing community. Many students havethe interest to get involved in Sydney’svibrant yacht racing scene but do nothave the knowledge or a way to getinvolved. The ‘Crew Search Forum’provides this link and allows the Club tobe the centre for communicationbetween the greater Sydney sailingcommunity and the Sydney studentmass. Being the only remaininguniversity sailing club in NSW meansthat the club is developing the servicefor all of the NSW university students.

In March 2009, the Club will hold thefirst University Regatta between theNSW universities since 2003. The eventwill be held on Lake Macquarie over along weekend and will allowcompetitors from around the state tocome together to compete for theirUniversity. Despite the lack of universityclubs, the event will be promotedthrough NSW’s universities with thehelp of Australian University Sport andthrough the NSW sailing and yachtclubs by Yachting NSW. The event willdrive the re-establishment of sailing inuniversities which once played a majorrole in the development of the sportamongst the youth. By promoting boththe competitive race side as well as asocial atmosphere, the event will haveattraction that is similar to events like

the University Games. Developing theevent as the sailing equivalent is thegoal.

With a lack of university sailing clubs,a growing partnership has beenestablished with the UNSWWindsurfing Club. The first joint eventwas held in mid October and involved40 members heading to Hawks Nest fora weekend of sociable sailing andwindsurfing. The first joint regatta eventthat will provide race managementexperience in preparation for theUniversity Regatta will take place in lateNovember. The growth of thispartnership will allow both clubs tofurther develop racing events and there-growth of university sailing andwindsurfing.

The Sydney Uni Sailing Club in 2008built a membership base and astructure for the Club to becomesustainable in the future. 2009 will seethe establishment of new events thatwill promote the Club and the sport inuniversities around NSW. Fundraisingplans will reach full implementation andhopefully bring in the much neededfunds for the purchase of new boatsand equipment to replace the agingfleet. These plans have been

formulated after much consideration ofwhat is needed by students, universitiesand sailing. By harnessing the rightsupport, the Club hopes that the re-growth of university sailing can secureits position as a dominant universitysport in NSW and Australia.

SkiThe Snowsports team this year came3rd overall, 2nd in the men’s division,5th in women’s, and 2nd in crosscountry. Overall we obtained 415.5points. Melbourne University came firstwith 450 points. These results were a bitdisappointing considering the amountof talent in the team. In the women’sdivision we came 1st and 3rd in alpineindividual and 1st in cross country. Theoverall results reflected our inability tofield a full team in every event this year.Another contributing factor to theresult was an unprecedented numberof individuals who did not start theirevent. In 2009 recruiting andadvertising by the club and teammanagers will be critical.

Individuals were only entered inevents they expressed interest in. It

costs $70 to enter someone in anevent, and by not starting, we forfeited$70, plus were at risk of losing another$70 for not starting. We entered theteam in events to ensure that therewere at least 3 competitors in eachevent – trying to maximise our overallpoint score. Because people did notstart, or were disqualified, we did notfield enough participants to maximiseour chances of winning.

AUC’s is an amazing event. Thankyou to the Club for $10,000 worth offunding, and all the effort involved inaccumulating the funds to enable us tohave such an amazing week again thisyear. Overall the week was a success –individually we did really well and thesocial program was phenomenal. Theonly downfall of this year’s event was inthe team aspect which I am sure can beremedied next year.

SoccerSydney University Soccer Football Club(SUSFC) began 2008 with the electionof an Executive Committee with a new-found, confident view about the futureprospects of the Club. We havecontinued to thrive since theintroduction of Voluntary StudentUnionism. The Soccer Division of theSydney Uni Sport Foundation waslaunched in style, current and former

players of various vintages enjoying thecompany of club-mates fromthroughout our history. From theguests in attendance on launch nightsome $140,000 was pledged, representing a substantial first steptowards our target of $500,000 in fiveyears.

A huge thank you to our FoundationPatrons Brendan Casey and Ray Hyslop,Fellows Laurie Gluskie and SimonPhilips, and further Benefactors andFriends of the Foundation. The pool ofmoney donated to the Foundation isalready over $100,000 and the Club hashad no need to even consider drawingon the interest yet. Having theFoundation did mean that we couldbudget more aggressively in 2008, andwe were able to take the decision towaive fees for women’s 1st Grade. Fromthere, discussions started in earnestwith Sydney Uni Sport and Fitnessabout the appointment of a full-timeDirector of Soccer, which they have verygenerously supported.

In 2008 we fielded thirty-two teams infive different associations, with roughlyfive hundred players competing underthe SUSFC banner. And that does notinclude the intervarsity teams or thesummer futsal!

The highlight of 2008 was the firstsilverware the Club has won in theFootball NSW Women’s PremierLeague. The women also lead the way

in intervarsity play, returning from theAustralian University Games with goldfor the second year in succession andthe fourth year in succession that oneof the Sydney University teams has wonthe tournament.

There were not many otheroutstanding performances, and yet2008 was a remarkable year for theClub. Throughout the year there wasstrong sense of camaraderie andpurpose, with players and coaches aliketaking an interest in the progress ofother teams in the Club, andimportantly, showing a willingness tohelp wherever possible. This alsocontributed to a healthy atmosphere atsocial events.

Over the course of the season,SUSFC won 188 games of the 568games we played (~33%), drew 167games (~29%) and lost 203 games(~36%). We kept the scorers busy toobagging 883 goals (excluding finals)while conceding 980 (excluding finals).Overall, we held our own, andpreparations are already underway foran even better year in 2009.

Sydney Uni players Samantha Poole,Michelle Edgtton and Annabel Davieswere named in the Green and Goldteam at the conclusion of the AUG.

During the year the Club did notenter teams into the Manly Warringahcompetition as there was a lack ofinterest. It is hoped that an effort torecruit more players at O’Week in 2009and a new committee will reinvigoratethe Club and see girls playing the sportweek-to-week as well as at intervarsityevents where they continue to do verywell.

SquashFrom the start of 2008 the Women’sand Men’s Squash Clubs wereamalgamated into one SydneyUniversity Squash Club (SUSC). It was agreat move allowing us to attract moreplayers and more teams.

2008 saw the SUSC complete anothersuccessful year. Playing membershipnumbers were more than the 2007levels, with a total of 94 full memberswho played in all competitions duringthe year. As in previous years, the Clubfielded teams in the South-EasternPennant Competition, participating inall three seasonal pennants: Summer(January and February), Autumn (March– June) and Spring (August -November).

The Summer Pennant is a gradedhandicap competition and is used bymost players as a vehicle formaintaining fitness over the Christmasand New Year break. This past year wefielded five teams, which is an increaseon other years.

The Autumn and Spring Pennants arethe main competitions of the year withteams competing in grades from Stateto Division 14. The Club fielded 11teams in the Autumn Pennant and 12 inthe Spring Pennant. The AutumnPennant saw the Club have 8 of the 11teams reaching the final 3 play-offs,with 7 of these contesting the grand

final and 2 teams in Div 1 and Div 14winning the grand final. The SpringPennant saw 5 of the 12 teams reachingthe final three play-offs, 3 teamscontesting the grand final, with 2 teamssecuring the championship in theirdivision.

The Club Championship was playedbetween the Autumn and SpringPennants. 25 Members competed forthis year’s bragging rites, which sawMurray Gibbons from the Div 1 teamdefeating Arno Becker 3-0 in the final.

The Club has the capacity to field 20teams in each of the Pennants. At themoment we have 12, so any newmembers are welcome. We cater for alllevels of play, from beginners at thegrassroots level, to those who arecontemplating a return to the sportafter a spell, or those wishing to joinour Club from another.www.squash.soc.usyd.edu.au

inaugural “Sutto” Award. Brian Suttonwas on hand to make the presentationto 12 year old Jessica Donovan.

We sent enthusiastic teams of varyingages to the St George/Sutherland DistrictMeets, Metropolitan, State andAustralian Championships in both longand short course categories. All ourswimmers conducted themselves in thetrue spirit of Sydney University, showinggood sportsmanship, dedication toachieving their best and support of eachother. Congratulations to all thoseswimmers who represented us andespecially to those who qualified forMetropolitan, State or NationalChampionships for the first time this year.

The SUSC Club Nights (Saturdays)and Race Nights (Fridays) held monthlycontinue to be well supported. Thesuccess of these meets dependsentirely on parental involvement. It was, therefore, encouraging to see sixteenparents offer their time to attend aTimekeepers Course to becomeaccredited Technical Officers withSwimming NSW. Congratulations andthank you to all these new officials.

An important initiative this year, bycoaches Vanessa Smith and SteveAlderman, was the introduction ofSUSC Records. We thank them for themany hours spent researching thearchives. Our Club has a veryauspicious history.

Olympic Games years offer extraimpetus and inspiration to sportingorganisations. SUSC was no exception, with Jonathon Newton narrowlymissing Beijing selection and MattJaukovic making two finals at theselection trials. A vocal group of SUSCmembers proudly cheered them on atthe Olympic selection trials in March.SUSC is indeed unique, featuring thepathway on offer “From Beginner toOlympian”. We must sincerely thankSydney Uni Sport and Fitness for theircontinued support of our swimmers.

Thank you to our fantastic coachingstaff, especially Steve Alderman andVanessa Smith. Your sterling efforts, often “above and beyond the call ofduty” are very much appreciated by all.

I thank the committee for all theirtime and effort in making the Club runwell and prosper as it has.

Table TennisFirstly, a big thank you to all themembers of the Sydney UniversityTable Tennis Club (SUTTC) who stillattend and participate in the weeklysessions as without your support, ourclub wouldn’t be where it is today.

This year has been one of turmoiland change. After a few golden years,2008 has brought many challenges forSUTTC. With many of the previouscommittee members leaving, it hasbeen difficult to fill the gaps that theyhave left behind. The lack of O-Weekpresence by the Club due to financialdifficulties has provided for a lack ofmemberships and a lack of funding tofully support players wishing tocompete for SUTTC at State andNational titles.

I am hoping that the Club will beable to provide for its members formany years to come, however thisrequires further support from currentand potential members who I hopeparticipate not only in the sport, butalso in the organisation anddevelopment of SUTTC. This year wehad approximately 20 members, whichis considerably lower than the 60 wehad last year. On the bright side, thesemembers tended to come moreregularly than members last year, presumably because they paid SUSFmembership voluntarily.

Although we have some financialsupport through our memberships andassistance by SUSF, this onlycontributes to a small portion of what isrequired to maintain a club. Sendingmembers to competitions is anexpensive exercise and as much as wewanted to support members at theAustralian University Games, thefunding and organisation of arepresentative team was difficult thisyear.

If there are any people willing tohelp, the Club would be appreciative ofyour time and effort. Please helpSUTTC become as exciting andinvolved as it once was, and hopefullywe can be successful in the many yearsto come. The administration dutiesmust be handled by a team of peopleotherwise SUTTC may cease to existwhich would be a shame consideringhow inexpensive it is to play comparedto the vast majority of other table

tennis clubs around Sydney. Finally, I do thank the members who

have helped promote the club aroundthe University and for helping getthrough a tough year. I hope that youwill continue to contribute to SUTTC asyour assistance has been invaluable. With your help, SUTTC will become asuccess - a club in which there isdiversity of cultures and a sanctuary forall things table tennis. Come join in thefun in 2009. We hope to see you there.

TaekwondoSydney University Taekwondo Club(SUTC) has seen exciting growth andhas experienced one of our best years. Many new and eager faces joined theclub and taekwondo training classes inthe dojo were often at capacity;something which has not been seen formany years.

The performance of our members inthe Australian University Games wasvery impressive. Eleven club memberscompeted in the AUG’s, representing arange of belt levels and most won theirmatches convincingly. The mostprominent match involved Sydney Yangwho amazingly won his first match inthe men’s black belt heavy weightdivision by knock out. Erin Elbelcompeted in the women’s yellow beltlight weight division and won a welldeserved gold medal along withCassandra O’Connor who achieved agold medal in the women’s blue beltfeather weight division. Kate Hartchercompeted in the same division as ErinElbel and won a silver medal. Kaier Tancame 2nd in the women’s red beltbantam weight division. Philip Heocame 2nd in both the men’s blue beltlight weight and the men’s red beltlight weight divisions. demonstrations in front of an eagercrowd. Master Lee joined SUTC earlierin the year and helped with the club’sO-Week demonstration by executingremarkable wood breakingperformances such as breaking twowooden panels whilst conducting aback flip.

The club also had a Krispy Kremefundraiser which was a very deliciousand successful event. 2008 also saw theintroduction of new night time class inthe HK Ward Gym, which was aimed todraw in students from Science andEngineering and also people with fulltime jobs that wished to train.

The years ahead are promising forSUTC and we are confident that we willwin AUG’s in upcoming years. We hadaround 100 members this year and theclub is expected to only get biggerwith most classes anticipated to run atfull capacity. On the social side ofthings, 2009 will see the return of theSUTC camp and also possibly jointsocial events with other martial artsclubs in the University. participate throughout the year.SUTC entered 5 teams in the ECC; 2

mixed teams from main campus andfrom Cumberland campus a women’s,men’s and mixed team. All teamsperformed solidly throughout thetournament with the Cumberlandcampus women’s and men’s teams bothtaking gold. Although the competitionwasn’t particularly strong, it was asuccess for the club as it exposed manynew faces to the AUS experience.

The crab racing AUG’s fundraiser wasthe most successful in SUTC history, raising ~$1,500. This year we relocatedto a new venue in Darlinghurst, whichproved to be ideal, with over 60 peopleattending. All AUG’s athletes helpedout on the night but a special mentionmust go to Paul Hickey, Kate Gammel,Danial Meade and Helen Scott whoorganised the event. Three teams (35athletes) went to AUG’s in Melbournewhich is the largest touch team since2005. The week ran relatively smoothlywith touch performing to a highstandard with the women’s teamclaiming bronze in 1st Division, men’steam silver in 2nd Division and themixed team finished a commendable

7th in 2nd Division (out of 16 teams). However, most notable was the goodbehaviour of our athletes off the field.Despite having the large team, allmembers were exceptionally wellbehaved, working within theaccommodation constraints. A bigthank you must go to Helen Scott andYoni Charlupski who put in a hugeamount of effort to organise andmanage the three teams.

SUTC provided athletes andorganisational staff to support theVarsity Representative Teams in 2008.This joint venture with UTS andMacquarie Uni is proving verysuccessful for all three universities andwe have continued to recruit and retainquality players. Undoubtedly thehighlight of the year was the men’steam winning the NSW Vawdon Cupgrand final remaining undefeated forthe whole season. Both teams alsotraveled to Port Macquarie inDecember for State Cup where themen made the semi final and thewomen’s team made the quarter finals.

Ultimate FrisbeeSydney University Ultimate FrisbeeAssociation (SUUFA) was the stand outuniversity ultimate club in 2008, earninga nomination for ‘Club of the Year’ inthe 2008 Australian Flying Disc (AFDA)Awards. Whilst other traditionally largeuniversity ultimate clubs came to thebrink of extinction this year, SUUFA hasbuilt a solid development base and in2008 sustained a core group of over 40active members, with countless othersless active but just as important. Thiswas due to the friendly and supportiveculture prevalent within the club andconstant encouragement to attendtraining, tournaments and join the clubteam which played in the North SydneyLeague (NSL). This was lead by ourdedicated development officers MikeTarn, Nikki Cotton and FionaMcDonald. The organised socials aftertraining such as karaoke, scavengerhunts and dinners also contributed to ahigh retention rate which would nothave come to fruition without thetireless work of the social directors AlexBaume, Cameron Bruce and StaceyWeisbrodt.

Not only was SUUFA’s memberretention the envy of many universityultimate clubs in Australia but so weremany of our results. SUUFA sent teamsto various intervarsity (IV) tournamentswith excellent results:• Sydney University IV – 1st• Charles Sturt University IV (Bathurst

SUUFA also sent a team to both theEast Coast Challenge (ECC) andAustralian University Games (AUG’s). Ahighlight on the calendar not only forthe high level of competitionexperienced but also for the excitingsocial events. Sydney University placed3rd at ECC. This was an excellent resultfor a relatively inexperienced team with5 rookies. For AUG’s a moreexperienced team was chosen torepresent Sydney Uni in Melbourneagainst 18 other teams. SUUFA placed2nd after losing a tough final againstFlinders Uni. Leading up to the finalSydney Uni was undefeated butFlinders just stepped it up to the nextlevel in the final. The silver medal waswell deserved but SUUFA areundoubtedly and unashamedly lookingto go one better next year.

SUUFA send several teams tocompete in the summer and winterleagues in the North Sydney League. The NSL is the largest ultimate leaguein Australia and is the breeding groundof many National Club and AustralianRepresentatives. SUUFA put two teamsinto Division 3 of the winter league andfinished 1st and 5th – an excellentresult for two teams of which more thanhalf were players new to the sport thisyear.

Along with these excellent resultsthere have been some brilliantindividual achievements by members ofthe club. Congratulations go to MaxHalden and Calan Spielman for makingthe Australian Juniors National Team!SUUFA also had many representativesat the club level representing variousclubs at the Australian UltimateChampionships (AUC).

VolleyballThe Sydney Uni Volleyball (SUV) hashad its most successful year ever on thecourt. This has been tempered by theloss of long time club administrator EdBinnie. Since his departure overseasthere have been a number of changesto the committee roles, and now withsome hard work, the enormous gapthat Ed left appears to be getting filled.

There have been great results in allareas from State League to NationalLeague and many minor tournaments

through the year. The women’s teamswere runners up in both Honours andDivision 1 at both of the State Cup pre-season tournaments, Illawarra andNewcastle. The men also had teamsmake finals only to come runners up aswell.

With new men’s coach Kiu Nam Choand Julie Kim returning to coach thewomen it was set for a strong year forall of the teams at State League and wehad the greatest success yet. Women’sHonours Champions, Women’s Division1 runners up and the junior girlsachieved 4th place. The men were alsosuccessful with the Honours boys beingunlucky to only get 4th place, while inDivision 1 we had both 2nd and 3rdplaces and the junior boys managed totake the bronze. These great resultssaw SUV take out the Overall StateChampions trophy, a feat not previouslyachieved by the club.

Sydney Uni Volleyball and UTSVolleyball Club continued the UTS-SUventure for National Lleague in bothmen’s and women’s AustralianVolleyball Leagues (AVL) in 2008. Afterlosing in the final last year the womenwere out for revenge taking the minorpremiership convincingly and thewinning the grand final in a rematch ofthe 2007 game against the combinedteam from the Melbourne Universities. This is the first year that UTS-SU haswon an AVL title and is an achievementthat all of the girls can be proud of. Themen made the AVL semi finals but wereeliminated to finish 4th. After WAVL theSydney Uni girls won the annualNational Club Championships inCanberra which is another first for theClub.

At AUG’s the men came 2nd and thewomen came 3rd. Luke Carroll, BetsyConnelly, Chris Todd and GabrielleWoodhouse all were selected in theGreen and Gold teams. SUV was alsowell represented at the national juniorchampionships with a number ofplayers selected to represent NSW:Troy Movsessian and Anika Lalic bothattended as coaches, Ben Lalic andOscar Konokoff played in the U17’sboys, Heather Cockburn played for theU19’s girls, Ed Walkley, Yaegan Doran,Daniel Gauci, Gabrielle Woodhouse,Adriana Amato and Stefanie Lalicrepresented in the U21’s teams, LiamWatson, Anthony Gigliotti, Craig Loweand Oliver Konakoff were selected inthe U19’s boys, and Oliver Konakoff wasselected in the All Star 7 team for hisperformance. Oliver was also selectedfor the National Youth team and CraigLowe was selected in the AustralianJunior side as well as receiving ascholarship to the AIS.

With so many talented young playersin the Club it is going to be an excitingyear in 2009 where we hope to seeeven further great results across theboard with volleyball.

Waterpolo MenIn 2008 the Sydney UniversityWaterpolo Club (SUWPC) faredexceptionally well despite coachingdisruption during the National Leagueseason. Alas our National League teamfailed to meet the finals.

By far the brightest part of our yearwas having four of our players selectedin the Australian Men’s Olympic team

that competed in Beijing, these beingThomas Whalan (captain), TrentFranklin (vice-captain), Robert Maitlandand Sam McGregor.

The future for the Club also looksbright. We had Lachlan Hollis (captain)and Scott Nicholson selected in theAustralian U20 team that attendedchampionships in Europe. LachlanHollis was voted MVP at onechampionship. Jeremy Davey wasselected in the Australian Youth teamthat also attended a championship inEurope.

In the NSW U20 teams thatparticipated in the AustralianChampionships early in 2008, we hadBen Turner, Lachlan Hollis, ScottNicholson, Jeremy Davey, BenGoldstein and Ben Zonaris. BenGoldstein was also selected in theAustralian School Boys’ team.

In the NSW U16 teams we had sixplayers selected while in the NSW U14team we had a single player selected.

Trent Franklin has also had a numberof very important recent appointments. He is now a Director to the AustralianOlympic Committee Board, Chairmanof AWPI Athletes Commission andDeputy Chair of the AOC AthletesCommission.

Nathan Thomas and Greg Turnerhave also been elected as Directors ofNSW Water Polo.

Greg Turner - Treasurer

Waterpolo WomenThe Sydney University Women'sWaterpolo Club highlight this year wasNikita Cuffe and Taniele Gofers’participation in the Beijing Olympicswhere Australia won bronze. Tanielehas been with the Club since she was13 and is studying here on a sportsscholarship.

The U20's team has just won backto back Col Smee tournaments withRebecca Angus coaching and theU18’s came 2nd in Brisbane.

At National League we won theminor premiership and were unlucky inthe playoffs to come 5th after losingseveral games by only one goal, despite our number one supporterMichelle cheering them on. At presentwe have ten teams in the Sydneycompetition and will send junior teamsto the State tournaments.

The Club appreciates enormouslythe support of Sydney Uni Sport andFitness and I would also like toacknowledge the work done by ourSecretary Leanne McKee and theTreasurer Sue Waight as well as ourcoaches Yvette Higgins, RebeccaAngus and all our other coaches andmanagers and supporters.

Lynn Hammond - President

Waterski and WakeboardIt’s not just the Queen that has Annushorribilis, at the Sydney UniversityWaterski and Wakeboard Club, we justhad two!

We finish 2008 however with all ofour troubles behind us thanks to adedicated committee. Our awesomeboat is now compliant with the newstate requirements, and our boatcaptains are qualified to a commercialstandard, assuring you of a professionalexperience with unprecedented levelsof safety and training. In fact we’re sogood that we have been invited to trainother professionals to meet the newstandards. This endorsement hasbought re-newed enthusiasm to theClub and the summer has started earlywith ride days aplenty and Phat campweekends coming up. One thing’s forsure, we going to finish 2008 great…and 2009 will be just fine. Check outwww.usydwake.com and join in the fun.Beginners to pros all welcome.

Giles Richardson - President

WrestlingSydney University Wrestling Club clubfeatured an Australian first at theOlympics. Dr. Kyla Bremner becamethe first female to represent Australia inwrestling at an Olympic Games. Shewent through an arduous selectionprocess and many overseas trainingtrips just to qualify. At the Games Kyladid her best and made the Club veryproud of her achievements. We wouldlike to congratulate her on herselection and her performance inBeijing. To top this off Kyla alsorepresented at the WorldChampionships late in the year. Havingmoved up a weight category, shecompeted at 51kg and placed 14th.On that note Leonid Zaslavsky was alsoselected to coach the OlympicWrestling Team at the Games.

Some of our other highlights thisyear were performances by Hakan Erand Deniz Nedim. Hakan Errepresented Australian at the JuniorWorld Championships in Istanbul,Turkey. Deniz Nedim has gone toTurkey to wrestle and compete in theTurkish Wrestling League. We hopethat, along with Kyla, we may havesome representation at theCommonwealth Games in 2010.

Our club training nights have beenvery well attended especially theWednesday sessions which aredesignated sparring. Along with thesubmission wrestling sessions onTuesdays and Sundays we have a lot ofinterest and good attendance overall. Our membership is steady andhopefully will grow in 2009. We arealways looking for members whetherthey are competitors or just peopleinterested in the sport.

We had a few overseas wrestlersvisiting our club which is always greatand brings a wealth of experience tothe Sydney University Wrestling Club.We welcome all and hope to have a lotmore interest post-Olympics in thisgreat sport. We look forward to a veryfruitful 2009.
