In 2008, we completed the KidsAbility 2020 vision and long-term plan. With broad input from staff, parents, partners and Board members, we identified four key initiatives that will set the fundamental strategic direction to 2020.

1. Supporting the “Life Journey” of the children and families we serve by working in partnership with parents and others.

2. Nurturing a Knowledge Organization by generating knowledge about outcomes and healthy child development that will be openly shared and of benefit to all service providers, families and stakeholders.

3. Enhancing Service Delivery by improving access to services and reaching out to where families live, learn, work and play in the communities we serve.

4. Identifying and Mobilizing Talent through the key talent pools and skills required for sustainable success in serving our clients.

During the past year we, started to implement our long-term plan with some very positive and exciting steps:

• Establishing a partnership with the new McMaster University Medical School in Kitchener. Medical students will receive training at KidsAbility sites and we will have access to knowledge and resources that will help us become a leading knowledge-based organization.

• The KidsAbility Centre of Excellence continues as a focal point for translating research into practice within KidsAbility and we believe that it will become a recognized leader in research and best practices for children with special needs.

• A parent network has developed to help parents connect and share information and ideas for mutual support. This will become an important part of the “Life Journey” of our families.

While stable and sustainable government funding continues to be a challenge, we continue to work with the provincial government to ensure that children with special needs are a priority and that the impact of population growth in this region on the demand for services is recognized. We are also reviewing how we deliver services to ensure that our limited resources are used as effectively as possible.

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our staff, volunteers, supporters and partners, we continue to improve the “life journey” of children with special needs and their families.

•KidsAbility provided a broad range of services to over 4,100 clients based on our philosophy of family-centered care. The children we serve have complex needs and many require a multidisciplinary approach to address their diverse conditions.

•We focused on enhanced service delivery through the identification of the need for a Developmental Pediatrician, looking at innovation in managing wait lists and working on Accreditation for the fall of 2009.

•We nurtured a knowledge-based organization by building our partnerships with the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy and McMaster University Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine as well as continuing our work with our Centre of Excellence in best practices, knowledge sharing and knowledge translation.

• This year 383 volunteers provided support at KidsAbility sites in Cambridge, Guelph and Waterloo.

• The Waterloo Resource Centre opened evenings with a new focus on developing programs and services for parents and caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

• Our Resource Centres saw 1,097 family memberships.

KidsAbility Foundation’s Board of Directors has been dedicated to raising both financial support and public awareness in assisting KidsAbility - Centre for Child Development fulfill its mission.

We have had a very busy and successful year, setting new annual highs for donations received for both our Kid’s Can’t Wait Campaign and our Endowment Campaign. We are very grateful to the wonderful donors, volunteers and community partners who share our vision.

Our 2008/2009 Kid’s Can’t Wait Campaign raised over $1-million. A very special thank you to our incredible Kid’s Can’t Wait Ambassadors Ammaarah Rehman, Philip Denison and Claire Stultz. Our ambassadors and their very supportive parents were a tremendous asset to our team, sharing their stories of hope and triumph.

The 4th Annual Kid’s Can’t Wait Radiothon held on April 3, 2009 raised $248,336 in support of programs and services at KidsAbility. A big thank you to 96.7 CHYM, KIX 106.7, 570 News, Rogers TV and Rogers daytime for taking our message of hope to engage our community. Our Radiothon allows us the opportunity to make a positive difference in our community by highlighting the services of KidsAbility that enhance the future of the children

served by KidsAbility. Thank you to Mike Collins, General Manager of Rogers, Kitchener Radio Group for your outstanding support.

In 2004 KidsAbility Foundation embarked upon a $10-million Endowment Campaign aimed at providing a necessary source of income. This year we celebrated a historic $1-million Endowment Campaign gift, pledged by the late Fred Stork and his wife Ruth Stork. This represents the largest gift ever received by KidsAbility and to honor their philanthropic spirit, the Pavilion at KidsAbility in Waterloo has been renamed the “Fred and Ruth Stork Pavilion.” Unfortunately, Fred passed away in October, not long after the Stork’s pledged their support.

To-date, approximately $5-million has been pledged to the Endowment Campaign to help KidsAbility meet the needs of local children and their families.

To our Foundation Board members who have served our community over the past year, we thank you for your leadership and commitment to our mission in raising both financial support and awareness for the work of KidsAbility.

From all of us, Board members, staff and especially the kids, we thank all of our donors and volunteers for making a big difference in the lives of the children who receive services at KidsAbility.
