Brian Yanigerhead Coach 12th Year

In his 12 years as Towson’s golf coach, Brian Yaniger has never stopped building the Tigers’ pro-gram. He continues to guide it through very competitive times.Early on Brian took the Tigers to the

top of the America East Conference, winning that league’s tournament title three out of four years. In 2002 Towson moved to the Colonial Athletic Association where golf among its southern schools is a way of life and draws national attention. Even though the Tigers face a number of CAA opponents who are traditionally ranked among the nation’s 150 collegiate elite, Brian has been able to keep Towson’s post-season fires lit. With the Tigers clawing their way to second and third place CAA finishes in 2005 and 2004 respectively, Towson earned at-large berths to the NCAA Tournament. Two years ago Towson threw another challenge at Brian in the form of developing a women’s program. His expectations for its success are high. He set the same kinds of goals for the men a decade ago. He figures to make it work again. “I don’t change swings or alter grips,” Brian says. “I teach our golfers to make the right decisions on the golf course. I pre-pare them to mentally play the round, to think about each shot.” As much as he stresses the mental parts of the game, Brian realizes there’s room for physical development as well. “We provide all of the tools for our players to work in the strength and conditioning areas,” Brian says. “To compete today, you have to more physically fit. Our opponents are so we will be too.” Brian’s philosophy has produced positive results for Towson. His teams have captured eight tournament titles, three conference cham-pionships and earned three trips to the NCAA Tournament in his 11 years. Three of his golfers were conference medalists. He has coached three first-team All-CAA selections. Two of his players (Jeff Castle and Billy Wingerd) were named CAA Golfer of the Year; another (Alex Brueggeman) was the conference’s Rookie of the Year.Academically Brian’s charges are well above par in the classroom. Last year his squad posted the highest team GPA among the men’s varsity squads. Three years ago one of Brian’s players (Mike Larkin) was honored as the CAA’s Scholar-Athlete for Golf. During his coaching career at Towson, Brian has been named CAA Coach of the Year twice (2004, 2005), America East Coach of the Year twice (1999, 2000) and Towson Coach of the Year for men’s sports once (2005). In 2005 he was honored as Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Brian’s first experience in coaching was in 1993 as head coach for the Baltimore Girls Maccabi Basketball team. During his tenure as coach his teams have won one gold and six silver medals in the Mac-cabi Games.

A graduate of nearby Loyola College, Brian was the Greyhounds’ golf team captain in 1972 after playing number two at Milford Mill High School during his interscholastic career. In 1972, he led Loyola to the St. Andrews (Scotland) International Intercollegiate Tourna-ment held at the historic course, and site of the 2000 British Open. For almost three decades, Brian was a sales representative for Safeguard Business Systems. Before joining the business community, Brian spent time in the communications world. First, he interned at WBAL-TV in the news department, working occasionally with local legendary sportscaster Vince Bagli. He then worked as a disc jockey at WETT-Radio in Ocean City, Maryland in 1973. Looking for a more sports oriented environment, Brian accepted a position at WJZ-TV as weekend sports anchor in 1974. He also spent time as a stringer for National Public Radio (NPR). The highlight of that position was an interview with Muhammad Ali just before the 1973 fight with Joe Frazier. A native of Baltimore, Yaniger currently resides in Baltimore City with his wife Linda, a Towson graduate. He has three chil-dren, Sindy (Maryland, ’96), Amy (Maryland,’ 2002) and Lance, a former All-County nose tackle at Owings Mills High School.

While the men are looking to regain the spark that lifted the Tigers to three NCAA Tour-nament appearances over a five-year period, the women would like the collegiate golfing world to know their second year program is on the rise.

Both share a common goal – to move to the head of the class in the Colonial Athletic Association.

“The CAA is a very competitive confer-ence for golf,” says Brian Yaniger who is in his 12th year as the program’s coach. “The men’s team has tasted success in the league and knows what it takes to get to the top. I’ve been very impressed with the women who aren’t far behind even though our program is still in its infancy.”

The men’s program is in its 40th year. It captured its first conference championship in 1976 and has won eight various league titles since to go along with three trips to the NCAA Tournament (2000, 2004, 2005).

This year the Tigers are going to have overcome the loss of two-time CAA Player of the Year Jeff Castle, former CAA Rookie of the Year Alex Brueggemann, Randy Sroka and Brian Carneal. Castle, Sroka and Carneal played together in nine of the 12 tournaments last year.

Sophomores Chris Scialo and Josh Jenkins are the only returning players with any kind of collegiate experience. Both are expected to carry a lot of the load for a team with no seniors.

Scialo was a top three finisher for the Tigers in five of eight events during his freshman year. His best showing was the 147 (74-73) he shot to tie for 14th at the William & Mary Invitational. The 73 was also his best round of the year and helped Towson to a fourth place team finish, their best team effort of last spring. He closed out his first year with a 76.78 average for 19 rounds.

Jenkins, this year’s team captain, got rolling last spring when he played in five of his 12 events, finishing his freshman year with a 77.4. His 72 in the third round of the Argonaut Invitational at Western Florida was the low round for all underclassmen last year.

The rest of the experience is in the form of junior Frank Olszewski and sophomore Joe Alvarez. Each played in one event last year. Olsze-wski shot a two-day total 165 at the Seascape Invitational. Alvarez carded a 236 (73-77-86) in the season finale at the Rutherford Invitational.

Yaniger is counting heavily on several newcomers to fill the gaps. If the new guys can produce, potentially, the Tigers could make some noise by late spring when the CAA gathers for its annual cham-pionship.

High on the list is junior Brent Davis, the 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division III individual medalist. Davis, a transfer from Montgomery College, was NJCAA national runner up in 2006. It will take the former NJCAA first team All-American a while to adjust to the NCAA Division I level but once he settles down, Yaniger feels he’ll be a contributor.

Another newcomer with good promise is freshman Nyasha Mauchaza from St. George’s in Harare, Zimbabwe who has ben-efited from international play in such tour-naments as the Junior Orange Bowl World Championship and the Junior World Team Championships in Nagova, Japan. He also attended the David Leadbetter School. He was the 2005 Zimbabwe Junior National Stroke Play champion.

Pat Hinch, a transfer from Harford Com-munity College, should add depth. Hinch won the the 2003 and 2005 MPSSAA State Class 3A/4A individual titles.

Freshman Brendan Kelly who was the third ranked senior in Maryland last year while playing for Annapolis High School, will contribute. Freshman Jon Zorn, a first team All-MIAA “A” Conference selection in his senior year at St. Paul’s School, rounds out the roster.

The women return five veterans and welcome two newcomers.

Junior Morgan Reich and sophomore Elisabeth Herzfeld are back as the top fin-ishers for the Tigers. Either Reich or Herzfeld

placed first for Towson in each of the seven events but one last year.

Reich, a steady, long ball hitter, is the team captain for 2007-08. She was the only Tiger to earn medalist honors last year when she captured the individual title at the Mount St. Mary’s Spring Thing. She’s a transfer from Winthrop where she was the Eagles’ leading golfer.

Herzfeld, who attended the David Lead-better School where she was Student of the Year in 2006, holds Towson’s school record with a 75 she carded in the first round of the Sea Trail Women’s Intercollegiate and on the second day at the Bucknell Fall Classic.

Sophomore Alejandra Estrada returns. She finished among Towson’s top five in each event she played. She tied for 21st to finish as the top Tiger in last year’s CAA Tourna-ment.

The remaining two spots for each event will be contested among four players – two veterans and two newcomers

Senior Mallory Weinstein and sophomore Diana Woodall competed last year. Woodall appeared in four tournaments and Weinstein in two.

New to the squad are junior Molly Gorman and freshman Sara Eichelberger.

Gorman is a transfer from Mt. St. Mary’s where she had seven top 10 finishes in her career at The Mount. She brings a five-handi-cap to Towson. She remains the only woman golfer ever to play for Wyoming Valley West High School.

Eichelberger finished seventh at the New York State Girls Golf Championships last year. She was tied for second, one shot off the lead, after the first round. She’ll give the Tigers excellent depth..”

G o l F h i s T o r yThe Lacrosse Homes Collegiate InvitationalIn 2000, the Tigers moved their Spring Invitational Golf Tournament to Great Hope Golf Course in Westover, Maryland, just outside of Crisfield. Last year the tournament, now called The Lacrosse Homes Collegiate Invitational, was moved again, to Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md.

The tournament is sponsored by Lacrosse Homes, Lindsay Dixon president. He and Matt Tengwall, Towson’s golf captain in 1997, were instrumental in moving the tournament to Prospect Bay CC.

Originally called the Towson Spring Invitational, the tournament was renamed the Drew Upton Memorial Golf Classic, in honor of the father of former Tiger golfer, Josh Upton. Drew Upton, who passed away from brain cancer, was a major supporter and contibutor to the Tiger golf program.

c a aColonial athletic associationComing off another record-setting season, the Colonial Athletic Asso-ciation continues to enhance its reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences. With a geographic footprint stretching from Boston to Atlanta, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 11 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even more impressive, however, are the honors accu-mulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 21 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2006-07, the CAA had six ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans and more than 1,600 of our 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets - New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (5), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (23). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19 million. The CAA now sponsors 22 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2006-07, a league-record 29 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with four teams advancing to post-season play for the past three years. Conference champion VCU pulled the most noted upset of the NCAA first round last season with its 79-77 victory over Duke and Old Dominion became the second CAA team in as many years to receive an NCAA at-large bid. Hofstra returned to the NIT for the third straight season and Drexel made its fourth NIT appear-ance in the last five years. In 2006, George Mason became the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. The Patriots were ranked No. 8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team. In women’s basketball, the CAA had three teams earn NCAA Tournament berths for the first time and four squads advanced to post-season play for the second straight year. Perennial power Old Dominion, which has captured three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997, captured its 16th consecutive conference title. James Madison returned to the NCAA Tour-nament for the first time since 1996 and Delaware made its second-ever trip to the NCAA’s. Hofstra completed its most successful season in school history by advancing to the quarterfinals of the WNIT.The conference also excels in many other sports. Delaware became the first CAA team to reach the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s

Lacrosse Championship in 2007. A league-record four men’s soccer teams earned NCAA berths in 2006, with Towson and Old Domin-ion advancing to the round of 16. A league-high four teams also represented the conference in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Champion-ship. William & Mary reached the round of 16 in women’s tennis and the Tribe tandem of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic was ranked No. 1 in the nation and reached the finals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. CAA squads have won 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981, which is the most of any Division I conference. Hofstra finished seventh overall at the NCAA Wrestling Championship and William & Mary finished eighth nationally in men’s cross country. In baseball, the league had 17 players chosen in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. There were 37 CAA student-athletes who received All-America honors.

CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial

Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal

of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study

abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-

athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic

resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institu-

tions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction - the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chem-istry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sci-ences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilming-ton and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The con-ference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005. From all-star athletes to Nobel Prize winning faculty, the CAA takes great pride in producing performers who stand out both on the playing field and in the classroom.

T o w s o n u n i v e r s i T yin the decades following the revolution, Americans clamored for free public schooling for their children. maryland’s elected officials and others who valued a literate citizenry also recognized that public school systems would require qualified and dedicated teach-ers. They pressed for a systematic, reliable means of producing teachers, and in 1865 - the final year of the Civil War - the legislature allocated funds for maryland’s first teacher-training school. on January 15, 1866, the state normal school opened its rented quarters in Bal-timore with a principal, m.A. newell, 11 students and three faculty. (“normal school” is the english transla-tion for ecole normale, the term used by the French teacher-training schools that served as models for u.s. educators.) Today, Towson university is an institution of higher learning with a president, Dr. robert Caret, an enrollment of 18,168 students (15,347 undergraduates) and a faculty numbering 1,276 (694 full-time).
