Sherry Silk Executive Director

In 2007 as the Humane Society of Tampa Bay embarked upon Mission Orange™ as a ASPCA® Mission: Orange™ partner, we knew that the ASPCA focus would be to create a humane community, where animals receive the respect they deserve, with no unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals simply because of the lack of resources and awareness.

Though overjoyed with the prospect of becoming an ASPCA® Mission: Orange™ community, all partners were aware of the challenges ahead and the potential consequences for the staff and the Board members of all participating agencies. Now one year later, we are extremely proud of all of our accomplishments and those of our partners in the continued efforts to make Tampa a model community.

On behalf of our dedicated staff, volunteers and Board of Directors, I would like to take the time to thank you for continuing to support the efforts of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for that support allows us to care daily for those who can not speak for themselves.

Sincerely,Holly O’BrienPresident, Board of Directors

2007 was a very good year for the animals at Humane Society of Tampa Bay. This organization was selected to be part of ASPCA® Mission: Orange™ and has lead the way in our community to help increase the save rate. The adoption (lives saved) rate in 2007 has doubled and there are plans in place to continue that adoption trend. A record has been set by the clinic staff by sterilizing more animals in our low cost spay/neuter clinic than ever before. In addition, there is now a program to help facilitate the sterilization of feral/free roaming cats in our community, a monumental problem.

The staff and Board of Directors are proud of the work that is accomplished daily and it is our mission and promise to continue to do all that we can for the animals entrusted to our care.

On behalf of the staff, and most importantly, those animals that we save, we thank you for your support.

Shelter

Every week, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay drives to Hillsborough County Animal Services, selects adoptable dogs and cats and transports them to our shelter. All are bathed, vaccinated, assessed and then spayed or neutered, prior to going to the adoption floor to find their forever home. Most of these animals would have been euthanized at animal services just because there are too many. These are lives saved by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

This has happened through teamwork between agencies at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County Animal Services, the ASPCA, No More Homeless Pets, and the Animal Coalition of Tampa. By cooperation, and the support of one another, the lives of animals in our community have been enriched. Due to ASPCA® Mission: Orange™ which started in January 2007, it has been a great year.

The Answer to Pet Overpopulation

The mission of Humane Society of Tampa Bay is not only to prevent cruelty and suffering but to care for homeless animals. In addition, HSTB strives to engage in humane education in the community and in 2007 performed over 200 hours promoting humane education to Girl and Boy Scout troops, classrooms full of children with questions, and corporations wanting to motivate their employees to become more involved in the animal community.

One small organization with 36 employees can be in so many places only with the help of many dedicated and caring volunteers. Last year HSTB experienced 10,002 hours of volunteer service. Volunteers not only help to care for the shelter animals but they also foster those that need a little extra time. They deliver pet food to low income homebound members of our community, assist at our busy Spay/Neuter clinic, and work on our spectacular special events.

Community partnership is important to HSTB. This year the staff has worked diligently to extend Kritter Kamp (humane education summer camp) to three weeks and to reach out to the elderly by re-establishing the Pet-a-Pet program where volunteers take their pets to nursing homes to visit and provide pet therapy.

Aggressively promoting low-cost, high volume, high quality spay/neuter in Hillsborough County for the past seven years, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, along with our partners, has proven that sterilization is a key component to pet overpopulation. The euthanasia rate at Hillsborough County Animal Services has steadily declined with the number of surgeries performed annually in the community.

The clinic and shelter staff performed 10,769 sterilizations in 2007, bringing the total number sterilized at our facility in the last eight years to over 65,000. These numbers mean less unwanted litters, less homeless animals, less suffering, and less animals euthanized in our community.

These numbers could not have been achieved without help

from our friends. In 2007 HSTB received a record number of grants for indigent and feral cat spay/neuter surgery. Thanks to supporters at the ASPCA, Petsmart Charities, Fresh Step,

Florida Animal Friends, the Triad Foundation, and our own Save a Pet Angel, the tide in our community is being turned.

In 2008 there is a plan to continue aggressive spay/neuter efforts involving feral and free roaming cats. A “Pit Bull Pal” program has also been launched to sterilize those canines most at risk, pit bull and pit bull mixes, for a subsidized fee of $25.00. In addition, HSTB continues to promote and support the county voucher program and is currently pursing multiple grants to help provide lower cost spay/neuters for all pets in our community.

Our Generous DonorsWe thank each and every one of you for your support in this past year. Without your support, we could not save all the lives that we did in 2007. We would love to mention every donor, but space limitations allow us to recognize by name only those who have contributed $200 or more in 2007, but in our hearts, we thank you all!

The Future of HSTBIn just three years, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay will celebrate its 100th anniversary. As we look back on our history, our impact on the community and the homeless animals that have passed through our doors, the future looks very bright. There is a vision for improvement of services, the rescue of more animals, and an increase in sterilization numbers.

As HSTB steps into a second century, the vision will become clearer and will be built on the actions the organization takes in these next few years. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay hopes that you will join us to find the right course of action and be part of the dream.

If you are interested in becoming more involved with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, please contact Sherry Silk, Executive Director at [email protected].
