One thing I learned very quickly in my first full year at the helm of Second Helpings was that an amazing number of things happen every day. We host scores of volunteers. We bring in hundreds of pounds of food. We train hundreds of people in the culinary arts. And we prepare and deliver thou-sands of meals.

CelebrationSecond Helpings CEO Cindy Hubert (left) and co-

founder Bob Koch (right) celebrate our 10th

anniversary with U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar.

When you add up the numbers over the course of a year, they’re quite impressive. Over 10 years, the numbers get to be staggering—and humbling. We had the great pleasure of celebrating our orga-nization’s 10th birthday in 2008. What a milestone for Second Helpings—and what a perfect opportunity to stop and consider the lasting impact we’re having on the com-munity.

In the last decade, Second Helpings rescued more than 10 million pounds of food and distributed nearly four mil-lion meals. Just think of all the food that would have gone to waste and all of the people who would have gone hun-gry without our efforts! Just as important, we’re saving taxpayers millions of dollars each year by channeling the meals we prepare and deliver through more than 50 local social service agencies: day cares, senior centers, missions and others serving our hungriest neighbors. Now Second Helpings is starting to redistribute even more surplus food, saving our not-for-profit agencies more and helping to feed more hungry people. These accomplishments gave us much to celebrate in 2008. Robert Egger, president and founder of DC Central Kitchen, joined us in January to help begin a series of ac-

tivities and events — starting with our first-ever annual meeting and celebration that was attended by 150 of our best friends. Our supporters, donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders joined us again at our Founders Luncheon held on April 29th — our actual birthday. This was fol-lowed in June by another birthday celebration where U.S. Senator Richard Lugar joined us in thanking hundreds of volunteers and donors dedicated to fighting hunger—a cause that’s always been near and dear to the senator. And the crowning event took place when our dedi-cated group of volunteers joined us in the garage for a picnic with FedEx and NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin. FedEx donated a new Toyota Prius to Second Helpings, which our new agency liaison will drive while working to connect, serve, and educate our recipient agencies in the best possible ways. The other part of this extraordinary year for Second Helpings was transition. In 2007, the Board of Directors of Second Helpings determined the need to move into the next phase of the organization’s development. We accom-plished this by transitioning away from a founder-driven organization with a working board and toward a staff-driven organization with board oversight. It is a natural progression for any mature not-for-profit organization. The plan called for the hiring of a CEO to manage de-velopment and fundraising while increasing the visibility of Second Helpings within the community. As a part of this restructure, we also created a new position of director

of operations. So far, we’re happy to report that the plans are working well. Our excellent board provides oversight and strategic input, while our staff manages day-to-day operations efficiently and admirably. Speaking of operations, our annual fundraiser events — Harvest and Tonic Ball and Tonic Gallery — were once again big hits with the community. Harvest, our annual food and wine-tasting event, attracted 600 people; the Tonic events attracted nearly 800 people. We’re looking forward to making both fundraisers even bigger and more successful next year. Over our first 10 years, Second Helpings has experi-enced such rapid growth that we need to look at our past growth and determine the priorities for the future. The Growth and Sustainability Plan is the result of this analy-sis and is a part of the revised Strategic Plan (2008-2010) adopted by our board of directors. Of course, we have many challenges ahead. But with a strong legacy of service to the community behind us and a strong plan for the future ahead, we’re ready to work hard to make our next 10 years even more successful than the first. Please continue to be a part of the Second Helpings family. Sincerely,

Cynthia Hubert ChiefExecutiveOfficer

Ten years has brought us so very much and allowed us to serve so many:

• 10,230,625 pounds of rescued food• Distributed 3,762,223 meals• Graduated 307 students from the Culinary Job Training program• Established a unique social enterprise, Just ‘Cause Catering in November 2005

The 2007-2008 fiscal year brought record accomplishments for Second Helpings:

• 1,708,019 pounds of rescued food valued at $2,600,762• Distributed 586,953 meals valued at $880,430• Re-Directed 972,384 pounds of food valued at $1,458,576• Graduated 33 adults from the Culinary Job Training program• Volunteer Hours = 21,102

Second Helpings founders:

Jean Paison, Bob Koch and

Kristen Cordoza Kienker.

Ten years is a long time. In 10 years, a newborn child grows to the cusp of adolescence. A fifth-grader becomes an adult. Presidents and administrations come and go. A decade is long enough for a sports program to become a dynasty. In 10 years, fax machines went from an amaz-

ing breakthrough to an almost-obsolete technology. Cell phones went from pretentious luxuries to items as common as pennies and nearly as disposable as bubblegum.

A Decade of Second Helpings

Page 7: 2007 – 2008 Annual Report (pdf)

So you can imagine that a lot has happened over 10 years at Second Helpings. We’ve seen a lot of changes. What started as an idea grew to a plan, blos-somed into a program, and be-came one of our city’s best-known, most essential social service agencies. What began at a kitchen table grew into a makeshift facility that we treated with love and respect—which en-abled our move to our amazing facility at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Center on Southeastern Avenue. And the little program we started that gathered a few pounds of surplus food and distributed it to hungry people

in need turned into something quite extraordinary: a pro-gram that last year rescued over 1.7 million pounds of food and prepared and distributed nearly 600,000 meals to the hungriest people in our community. Along the way, we also graduated 307 chefs from our Culinary Job Train-ing Program—people we’ve sent out into the world to solve the problem of hunger and unemployment in their own way, as hardworking, responsible citizens. And we saved the day cares, missions, senior centers and other agencies serving our hungriest neighbors mil-lions of dollars. Which means that, ultimately, we saved taxpayers a lot of money. Over the last decade, we have enlisted the support of literally thousands of community activists, donors and vol-

unteers. For many of them, Second Helpings has become a passion—the cause they wear on their sleeves, trumpet to all their friends and support faithfully with their time, tal-ent and treasure. We simply could not have done it with-out them. The numbers tell us that the problems of hunger and unemployment are not going away any time soon. We can suggest that 10 years of fighting hunger and empowering people in Greater Indianapolis is cause for celebration. But we might also suggest that it’s cause for introspection. If we are working as hard as we can to eliminate hunger, why haven’t we succeeded? After all, 10 years is a long time. Shouldn’t we be finished by now? We’re not finished because Americans continue to

throw away an alarming amount of food that we simply cannot stand to see go to waste. We’re not finished be-cause there are still thou-sands of economically disadvantaged people in our com-munity—and more every day with the current economic challenges facing our nation and our world. We’re not finished because every day in our communi-ty, thousands of children and adults don’t have enough to eat. Hunger isn’t something you address with a sandwich and hope it will go away. It’s a battle that has to be fought day after day after day.

We’re not finished

because there are still

thousands of economically

disadvantaged people

in our community—and

more every day with

the current economic

challenges facing

our nation and our world.

Page 9: 2007 – 2008 Annual Report (pdf)

We’re not finished because the need is so great. It is so much greater than we ever imagined when we began. So, yes: we celebrate. For 10 years, Second Helpings has been fighting the good fight. We have changed people’s lives. We have given many the tools to succeed in a new career. We have been amazingly good stewards of resourc-es that seemed like trash to everyone else. We have been the ultimate safety net for our hungriest neighbors—peo-ple who wouldn’t have had a good meal today unless we delivered it to the agencies we serve. But we also look at this milestone as a chance to re-dedicate ourselves to our cause. The numbers tell the tale. We have done so much. There’s so much yet to do. Now’s the time to get busy.
