HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of theforge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world's largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapterthe Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, whichhas had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armorand weapons for the gods. We create our own "armor andweapons" here, in our newsletter, so it is called THE ANVIL .

BY V ICE A DMI RAL D ANNY P OTTS
Ive always said if you cant get a job done, youhould step aside and let someone else do it.
You may recall that last month, I announced thathad resigned from the STARFLEET CompOps
eam. This month, Ive also turned in my resigna-ion to the Regions CompOps group as well. Ive
got a lot of irons in the fire that have nothing todo with STARFLEET, and with my sons footballeason about to start, Im gonna have even lessime available for these day-to-day type jobs in
STARFLEET.
The 2008 Region 2 Summit has been awarded, and its gonna be close by! The USS New Hope, based in Montgomery, will be hosting its firstever Summit, and I couldnt be prouder of ourormer Shuttle. Several of the USS Hephaestus
crew have already pledged our support to thisevent, and I encourage you to help out too. Letme know how you want to be involved, and Illpass it on to Nancy, Jan and Doug.
Dont forget the Firefly Shindig, July 21, at the
home of the Mohneys. Of course, thats also thedate of the release of the last Harry Potter book,o its a full day!
You may have picked up on the idea that TexasHoldem poker has become a standard gameamong the Hephaestus crew. Youd be right! Wehave an informal poker group thats been rotat-
ing through member homes for the last year. Ifyoure interested in having an event at yourhome, this could be a great, inexpensive way todo it. Whether you want to play or just host, its agreat night of socializing. Contact me or Pete formore details.
The STARFLEET Election season is definatelyin full force. So far, three slates of candidateshave announced their desire to run, and theHephaestus has sent in our Nomination, afterdiscussing all the candidates during the JuneBusiness Meeting.
If youre looking for an area to serve on thechapter, take a look at the crew listing (else-where in the Anvil) and find a department whereyou think you might want to participate. Get intouch with me or Pat Hicks about what you wantto do.
See you next month...

Star Trek: Deep Space Nines Nana VisitorTalks Dancing, Broadw ay & Beyond
Nana Visitor had little choice, but to become a great
dancer.Born into a performing family of Hollywoods finest, her
destiny seemed assured. Indeed, her aunt was none otherhan the legendary Cyd Charrise. But this multi-talented
performer didnt stop at masteringthe most physical performing art.
She excelled at dance and confi-dently took a step beyond.
Best known to audiences as free-dom fighter Major Kira on the hit
television show Star Trek: DeepSpace Nine, she won early roles onsoap operas, TV dramas and come-dies. No better proof of her sharp
omic timing was co-starring opposite Sandra Bullock inhe TV version of the hit film Working Girl. Despite, theitcoms short run, Nana had arrived on the national enter-ainment scene.
Living up to her royal theater pedigree, Nana appearedwith Angela Lansbury in the touring company of Gypsy,nd later won her most prominent stage role - Roxie Hartn the revival of Bob Fosses classic Broadway musical
Chicago. My chat with Nana ranges from a thrilling child-hood spent around the Great White Ways legends, to adeep affection for Star Trek, to her starring role on ABCFamilys Wildfire.
Your dance background is impressive. How w as itgrowing up the daughter of such dancing luminar-es as your parents and your Aunt - Cyd Charrise?
It was like being the child of someone who was a sword
master. My eye was trained and my body through osmosisgot used to the best of the best. I never had to think toomuch about how to dance I just did it. I watched dancerslike Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Tommy Tune and greatsfrom the modern and ballet world of NY. As a child, I was
just mostly bored and couldnt wait for class to end so mymom and I could go next door to the deli and have lunch.
Growing up in a Hollyw ood family must have beenwonderful. Did your parents take you to m ovie setsthey worked on?
I have vivid memories as a tiny girl of watching NatalieWood rehearsing the strip number in Gypsy and watchingher boyfriend at the time, Warren Beatty, eating a sand-wich while he watched her rehearse. When he was half done with the sandwich, he would throw it over his shoul-der. My most vivid memories were of being in darkened
theaters on Broadway, watching people rehearse a numberover and over again. Also, I spent a month in London withmy sister, who was playing Gypsy with Angela Lansbury.Because there was nothing else for me to do, I went outfront and watched the show every night. Watching Angelaperform Roses Turn was like getting a Masters Degree intheater. Years later I got to do Gypsy with Angela and Igot to use everything that I learned from her and feel thepower of her performance from a few feet away.
What are your fondest memories playing RoxieHart in Chicago? Was it your most satisfying stageexperience?
It was one of the most satisfying stage experiences ever. And my most vivid memory is stalking back stage, whichhad black painted walls and colored lights, I was waitingfor my cue and all of the exotic creatures, that were myfellow performers, were making entrances and exitsthrowing me smiles as they slithered on stage. I pacedback and forth in my lace dress and spiked heels andthought, I was like a wild animal that had been in the zoo(tv) and I was now loose on the Savannah where Ibelonged. I felt like I had joined my particular pride of ani-mals. My tribe.
The current crop of Broadw ay productions. Anyfavorites amongst them?
I havent been able to see them. I wish I could. Itsounds like there are so many wonderful productions outthere.
Do you watch Dancing With The Stars?
Yes, I do! Its great fun! Im glad that dance is getting

he attention.
JJ Abramscomingin for the newStar Trekmoviewith a big all star cast. Your feelings/ expectations? Are you excited for the franchise?
I have deep feelings about Star Trek. I feel that its ableo present archetypes that are important story tellingools. And we need story telling. Im a huge Joseph
Campbell fan and I believe he would be pleased. Anythinghat perpetuates the franchise is a great thing.
At the tim e the DS9 sets w ere the largest andmost expensive for any standing set on a TV show. Were they as im pressive as they looked on film? How much does that help you get into character?
Actually they were more so. When you entered thetage, you entered the world. And after 17 hours of beingnside there, it was easy to convince yourself that the starields outside the port windows were real.
Rick Berman. Criticism of his handling of the fran-hise has been pretty sev ere. Some otherStar Trek ctors have said Rick Berman was never a hands on
producer and rarely visited their sets was that t hease with DS9?
Producers Michael Piller and Ira Steven Behr were myguiding lights in the show. And I adored and I will alwaysdore them both.
Terry Farrell. Her decision to pull out before the last sea-on. Think she made the right choice? Perhaps more thanny other crew, DS9 depended on the interplay of charac-ers/actors were you upset with Terry for leaving?
Absolutely. Because she was following her own instincts. That cant be wrong and she certainly got a lot more yearsof experience doing the Ted Danson show Becker on CBS.ll admit that I tried to talk Terry out of it. That I wanted
her to stay. But she told me very eloquently that it waswhat her heart insisted upon. You cant argue with that.
Star Trek FanFilms on the Int ernet. Thoughts?Would you ever consider participating like CirrocLofton, Tim Russ and Nichelle Nichol s recently havedone for Star Trek: Of Gods & Men?
I spend almost no time on my computer (as people who-mail me can attest to). and I make a point not to visitites that have to do with me.
Wil dfire. Its been a great run so far. CreatorMichael Piller had a k nack for creating wonderfulcharacters. Is the success a pleasant surprise?
AfterWildfirewraps permanently, do you look for-ward to the stability of another TV series or wouldyou rather work features/ guest spots more?
Its always a surprise when a show gets picked up. But Ihave to say, I had a certain certainty that it would allalong. And at this point, I dont care so much about whatthe project is...characters interest me more. So, I want toplay interesting characters. Thats what I look forward to.
Talk about BABYSITTER WANTED. It looks effectivelycreepy from the description and tagline. Im a big horrorfan and love the idea of terrorizing characters on a farm.It looks quite original.
There is a buzz about it. But I didnt get to see the bulk being filmed. So, I dont have an idea except they weregreat people and it was a great experience.
Thanks so much for granting the interview, Nana!

Kurtzman Promises No Galactica-StyleReimagining
Like his writing partner Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman hasbeen busy publicising the new Transformers movie and isalking about Star Trek as well.
Each project comes with different challenges, Kurtzmanold Voices from Krypton. Asked about how he felt about
writing the screenplay for the next Star Trek movie, hedded, It is an honor to be part of it now and to inherithat mantle, but I feel like we couldnt have been doinghat without the instruction that everyone else has given
us.
Kurtzman also said that he appreciates the road maphat has been laid out for himself, Orci and director J.J.
Abrams, assuring fans that their script for the eleventh Star
Trek film would not attempt to reinvent the franchise likeRon Moore did with Battlestar Galactica.
The thing that strikes you when you watch [the originalStar Trek] is how unbelievably sophisticated those shows
were for the time, he explained. They didnt pander toanybody and in a way you had to catch up with a lot of thetechnology that was happening at the time. On top of that, the show was entertaining and managed to have this veryrelevant social parable...it is making a comment on basichuman relations and politics.
Episodes that accomplished all that, added Kurtzman, are a miracle and well worth looking at for inspiration:You certainly couldnt imagine doing Trek without takingthat into account.
Roddenberry Inducted Into Science Fiction Hall ofFame
Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was inducted intohe Science Fiction Hall of Fame in Seattle the weekend
before last during an extravaganza weekend at which theScience Fiction Museum unveiled its exhibit, Out of thisWorld: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television.
StarTrek.com reported on the event, which began with aostume party on Friday, June 15th. The exhibits thirdloor is entirely devoted to Star Trek costumes and models
used in Star Trek. On Saturday, author Neal Stephensonerved as master of ceremonies at the dessert buffet forhe Hall of Fame recipients, who also included artist Ed
Emshwiller, filmmaker Ridley Scott and writer Gene Wolfe.
Star Trek: The Next Generations Wil Wheaton (WesleyCrusher) presented the award to Roddenberrys son,Eugene Roddenberry, Jr., whom Wheaton called a friend.n his remarks, Wheaton also said that the science fiction
museum is an affirmation of why I and so many otherpeople around the world love science fiction...science fic-ion can give us warnings about the future, hope for theuture, or just blissful escape into the future. He cited Star
Treks optimism as a value worth preserving from its era. When I turn on CNN, I wish that our world leaders would
watch more Star Trek and less 24, he added.
Wheaton said that he was very proud to be part ofRoddenberrys legacy and told the story of how when
Wesley was promoted to ensign on the series,Roddenberry presented the actor with the bars he receivedwhen he was promoted to ensign in the military. He toldme that in many ways Wesley Crusher was as close as hehad come to writing himself in Star Trek as a character,he said. Then he gave those bars to Roddenberrys son,who recalled that he had been forced to work on The NextGeneration while Wheaton was acting on the series andhe resented it at the time.
Star Trek was a reminder that the impossible was some-thing that we could get if we all worked together, addedEugene Roddenberry, who said that his father never sawhimself as a celebrity; he saw himself as an average guywith ideas just like anyone else, and he loved the fans.He thanked the museum founders and everyone presentwho had supported Star Trek over the years.

Star Trek Fan Films Announce Future Plans
Star Trek: New Voyages World Enough and Time has apremiere date, Star Trek: Dark Armada is preparing its pilotpisode and a familiar face has joined Star Trek: Unity asan films continue their surge in popularity.
The New Voyages web page has announced a premieredate of August 23rd for World Enough and Time alongwith a streaming video event with executive producerames Cawley and guest star George Takei (Sulu), the lat-er appearing live from Beverly Hills. Writer Marc Zicree
will appear as well.
In other New Voyages news, the episode Blood andFire has wrapped principal photography in New York as ofSunday, June 10th. The episode is written and directed byThe Trouble With Tribbles writer David Gerrold, who hadhe cast working 16-hour days over the 12-day shooting
schedule. Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) guest stars in thisepisode, which Gerrold had originally hoped to see pro-duced as a Next Generation installment and which doesnot yet have a release date. Some behind-the-scenes pho-tos are here.
Dwight Schultz (Barclay) announces the Dark Armadapilot episode at that series web site. Nightfall will beginshooting in July and will film on location and with greenscreen for the remainder of 2007.
And actor Kurt Carley, who played Captain ChristopherPike in the New Voyages episode In Harms Way, will bea special guest star in the Unity episode Disunity, according to the Unity web site. A veteran of Batman fanfilms, Carley said, Im delighted...to be part of this projectand for the opportunity to return to the world of Star Trek.
Windom Not a Star Trek Fan Before or AfterDoomsday
Despite being recognized as Captain Decker, the manwho piloted a shuttlecraft down the maw of the DoomsdayMachine, actor William Windom claims that he was never
Star Trek fan.
In an interview with StarTrek Magazine (via Sci FiPulse), Windom said thathe was not familiar withthe series and became afan of William Shatner(Kirk) only after he turnedfunny about five yearsago. As for Star Trekitself, I wasnt a fan ofanybody involved with thething! Not the storyline or
any part of it.Windom believes he was
cast in the role becausehe was associated withplaying broken characters
ike Decker. I used to be known in those days as Williehe Weeper, he explained. Whenever they neededomeone to break down on a show confessing a murder ornfidelity, anything where something happened to this guy
and we watch him disintegrate on camera, they would say,Get Windom bring in Willie the Weeper!
In The Doomsday Machine, which Windom feltseemed kind of silly, with the planet eater and space-ships, he was charged with playing a character who fallsapart telling Captain Kirk and company what happened tohis ship and crew, how he lost everything because of theplanet eater! He said he acted as though he were in acartoon and only years later thought about the episode asa version of Moby Dick: I was playing Captain Ahab inOuter Space but I didnt think about it that way until yearsafter I did it, when I read it in an article!
Windom was also uncomfortable because he felt that theStar Trek set was not a happy one. When I did the showShatner was at war with Nimoy, he stated. Shatner wasnot funny then...I like to clown around, so when I get on aset where actors dont clown around, I get a little suspi-cious. That put me off right away.

Writing Young Kirk and Spock
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who met in a highchool cinema class, had intended to make really revolu-ionary independent movies before moving from projectsike Xena to Mission: Impossible 3 and now Transformers
nd Star Trek. The emphasis we were given was in viewpoint and liv-
ng inside the mind of your characters, Kurtzman told TheNew York Times. You have to take your genre seriously. Ifyou write it tongue-in-cheek, the audience will see it, andheyll feel theyre being talked down to. And theyll kill
you.
The pair were always genre fans who watched Back tohe Future and Close Encounters of the Third Kind whiletudying cinema. The pair met J.J. Abrams writing for
Alias. But they fear that now that they are creating StarTrek, they have lost some of their fan credentials.
You can never be just a fanboy in the eyes of other fan-boys, said Orci. Youre also, in a way, the establish-ment...youre accountable for all your decisions, and
inevitably you cant please everybody. They only agreedto write Transformers after making certain that producerSteven Spielberg really wanted a character story and itwouldnt just be a giant toy commercial...its all the thingsthat a car represents in this country
The writers had to reconcile the mythologies of theTransformers toys, comic books and television series, which is akin to what they need to do to reinvent the StarTrek franchise. The pair confirmed that the film concernsearly adventures of Kirk and Spock, though they found itintimidating that posters advertising a release date hadalready been printed before their script was written.
Producer Damon Lindelof said that they can have atremendous amount of respect for the source material, butthey know that a studio is bringing them in because theycan make it understandable to [a new] audience. Hebelieves the franchise will be well served because Orciwas a fan of The Next Generation while Kurtzman stoppedpaying attention after Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
