Recent strong activity in theglobal chemical process indus-tries (CPI) has brought goodnews for pump manufactur-

ers, among other equipment vendors.Theres tremendous growth in thechemical, petrochemical and oil andgas markets, and business for us isgood, says Dave Flinton, product &marketing manager with ITT Goulds

Pumps (Seneca Falls, N.Y.).But both engineering contractors

and pump end-users are demand-ing more for their money in terms ofreduced pump-lifecycle costs, Flin-ton points out. For API 610 centrifu-gal pumps such as Goulds Model3700 (photo), one way to do this is tobroaden the range of impeller and cas-ing sizes so that the best efficiencypoint (BEP) of each pump can be moreclosely matched to the actual operat-ing conditions.

Accordingly, Goulds has recentlymade available eight new hydrau-lic combinations for the Model 3700,with a further 17 or so to come laterthis year. Energy is a big portion ofthe cost of owning a centrifugal pump, especially the high-horsepower ma-chines found in the oil and gas mar-ket, Flinton says. By dramaticallyincreasing the density of our coverage,we will more often be able to provideour customers with the optimum se-lection for efficiency.

For engineers seeking a similarlywide range of hydraulics in ISOpumps for chemical service, the CPX

from Flowserve Corp. (Dallas, Tex.) isavailable in 40 sizes, and in materialsranging from ductile iron to titanium. The CPX and Flowserves Mark 3

ANSI B73.1 pump are both availablein a wide range of configurations, in-cluding mechanically sealed, dynami-cally sealed, low-flow, self-priming,

vertical-sump and recessed-impellerversions. Available flowrates are up

    to 1,680 m3/h, heads up to 300 m, andtemperatures from 80C to 370C.

All CPX pumps share the same hy-draulics, sealing options, and bearing-frame options, thereby minimizingspares inventory requirements.

To avoid problems with insufficientsuction, lifting fluids from sumps andboreholes is often best done with apurpose-designed centrifugal pump.

Vertiflo Pump Co. (Cincinnati, Ohio),offers its Series 900 vertical sumppump for pit depths up to 7.9 m, headsup to 52 m, and flowrates up to 100 l/s.The Series 900 (photo) is designed fordirty fluids and minimal maintenance,

says the company, and is available in316 stainless steel.

High-pressure pumps for boiler feedwater, reverse osmosis, chemical injec-tion or seal flushing include plungertypes, multi-stage centrifugals of vari-ous kinds, and very-high-speed single-stage centrifugals such as the Sunfloseries from Sundyne Corp. (Arvada,Colo.), whose impellers run at 6,000

32,000 rpm. An alternative to these isthe SPS, a novel multi-stage, horizon-tal centrifugal design developed fromsubmersible borehole pumps by WoodGroup ESP (Houston, Tex.). Accord-ing to SPS general manager Neil Fer-rier, the pumps oil-industry heritagemakes them very reliable, so mainte-nance costs are lower than those forplunger pumps, while their capitalcosts are lower than those of split-casecentrifugal pumps.

An SPS pump contains up to 400 ra-dial or mixed-flow impellers on a sin-gle horizontal shaft. Flowrates are upto 2,000 gal/min, and discharge pres-

sures up to 6,000 psi. We did think thelength of the pumps might be a prob-lem, Ferrier admits, but there hasbeen a lot of interest from refineries,

even if they have to be installed alongwalkways. So far, six refineries havebought the pumps. Fluids pumped in-clude wash water for desalting, andlight hydrocarbons.

Although many manufacturersthese days offer magnetically coupledand canned-motor pumps, one of thepioneers in this market is Hermetic-Pumpen (Gundelfingen, Germany andHumble, Tex.), which has deliveredmore than 120,000 such units. At thebeginning of March Hermetic took

over sister company Lederle (Gun-delfingen, Germany), which special-izes in liquid-ring vacuum pumps androtary piston pumps.

Another canned-motor specialist,Hayward Tyler Inc. (Colchester, Vt.),recently delivered a canned-motorpump and spare motor together worth

$520,000 to a U.S. specialty chemicalmanufacturer. The pump will handle1,4-dimethyl cyclohexanedicarboxyl-ate (DMCD) saturated with hydrogenat 1,850 psi and up to 500F, and willrun continuously for 18 months be-tween catalyst changes.

Wanner Engineering (Minneapolis,Minn.), a firm noted for its Hydra-Cell

positive displacement pumps, recentlyintroduced magnetically coupled ver-sions of its Stan-Cor non-metallic

ANSI centrifugal pumps. The Stan-Cor MK pumps feature an impellerthat can be replaced or trimmed with-out replacing the magnetic drive. AllStan-Cor pumps have casings made

from thick, carbon-fiber-filled Kynar, which eliminates the permeation thatcan occur with plastic-lined metal cas-ings, the company says.

Protecting valuable assetsWhile good pump design is the foun-dation for low lifetime costs and reli-ability, suitable control systems can go

a long way to aid both these objectives.Version 5.0 of the PumpSmart PS200variable-speed drive system from ITTMonitoring and Control (Seneca Falls,N.Y.) can cut pump energy use by up to65%, the company says, through intel-ligent control. After calibration basedon just four data points flowrate

and power at the BEP, rated speed, and shut-off power the system usesthe current and frequency suppliedto the motor to predict flowrate to aclaimed accuracy of 5% without theneed for pressure or flow sensors. Theresult is improved controllability, en-ergy savings, and low-flow protectionfor both centrifugal and positive-dis-

placement pumps. For applications that simply require

protection against overheating, FluidComponents International (FCI; SanMarcos, Calif.) offers the FlexSwitchFLT pump protection device (photo,p. 33). By detecting flow, level andtemperature, the FlexSwitch FLT

provides two levels of alarm: the firstwhen the flowrate falls below a preset

value in the range 0.013 ft/s, and thesecond when the pump inlet actuallyruns dry. The FlexSwitch FLT has nomoving parts.

Detecting problem conditions isonly useful, of course, if protective ac-tion follows. To make this as easy as

possible, Opti-Valve LLC (Broomfield,Colo.) offers a package of equipmentincluding sensor, bypass valve andflow-restriction orifice (photo, p. 33).The sensor detects low flow caused bya closed downstream valve throughrises in temperature or pressure, adrop in motor current, or a combina-

tion of these. At this point, it opens thebypass valve, creating a flow of liquidlarge enough to stop the pump fromoverheating.

    To help pump users understandhydraulics, Pump Systems Matter(www.pumpsystemsmatter.org), aneducational initiative backed by theHydraulic Institute (Parsippany, N.J.;

www.pumps.org) has made its PumpSystems Improvement Modeling Tool(PSIM) software freely available fordownload. PSIM allows users to modelpumping systems using a drag-and-drop interface. PSIM models pump andsystem curves, pump efficiency, NPSHcalculations, impeller trimming, and

automatic pump curve viscosity cor-rections, and calculates energy costsover time using net present value.

Positive performersPositive displacement pumps may bepreferred over centrifugals for viscousliquids, for low flowrates at moderateor high pressures, when self-prim-

ing is needed, and when flowratesor system conditions change widely.Blackmer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) re-cently launched a new sliding-vane

pump, the SX3, that is suitable formany chemical duties, thanks to itsstainless steel construction and Du-ravane carbon-filled resin vanes. Ex-ternal bearings provide durability andeasy maintenance, says John Pepper,Blackmers VP of sales and market-ing for North America; and the pumpcan run dry for short periods withoutdamage. Capacity is 100250 gal/min,at pressures up to 125 psi.

    Last year Blackmer launched a

smaller pump, the ProVane, that hasproved popular in biodiesel plants, saysTom Stone, the firms director of mar-keting. Available in ductile iron andstainless steel, five sizes of ProVanecover flowrates up to 100 gal/min. Asmall rotor diameter keeps vane tipspeed down, allowing the pumps tooperate reliably at full motor speed(1,200, 1,800 and 3,600 rpm), whilethe large diameter of the product-lu-bricated bearing ensures good per-formance even with dry fluids like

methanol, pentane and liquid carbondioxide, Pepper says (photo, p. 34).

Waukesha Cherry-Burrell (Delavan,Wisc.) manufactures a wide range ofpumps, including the Universal seriesof twin-rotor positive displacementpumps, which have hooked rotors;tri-lobe rotary pumps; and centrifu-gal pumps for sanitary applications.

A recent development is the Tru-Fitgearbox, which the company says re-duces baseplate length by 2025% andeliminates shaft alignment problems.

Viking Pump (Cedar Falls, Iowa) haslaunched a new tri-lobe positive dis-placement pump for OEM transportapplications (photo, p. 34). The RTP20can transfer up to 264 gal/min at pres-sures up to 145 psi and viscosities to55,000 cSt. A longer sealing land atthe rotor tips improves efficiency withlower-viscosity products, says JohnStillman, director, global OEM sales.

Viking also makes internal and exter-nal gear pumps, and vane pumps.

A specialist in progressing-cavity(PC) pumps is Moyno (Springfield,Ohio). The companys Moyno 2000pump features a unique gear joint

that provides excellent torque trans-mission and control of thrust, reducingthe radial load on the drive shaft andbearings and simplifying maintenance(photo, p. 35). The Moyno 2000 HS sys-tem, meanwhile, uses a G4 pump with

a twin-screw feeder as a cost-effectivealternative to piston pumps for thetransfer of semi-dry materials such assewage sludge.

The new LPP80 high-capacityperistaltic pump from Larox Flow-sys (Lappeenranta, Finland) deliversup to 176 gal/min (photo, p. 35). Thecompanys design focus on mineralsprocessing and metallurgical applica-tions has resulted in a pump with ex-ceptional performance and reliability, says Matti Riihimki of Larox Flow-

sys Pump Products. The pump uses apatented roller design that is said togenerate twice as much flow per revo-lution as a conventional pump, as wellas increasing hose life and reducingenergy consumption.

The SPX peristaltic pump fromWatson-Marlow Bredel (Wilmington,Mass.) is suitable for abrasive andcorrosive fluids, thanks to its Bioprenehose material (photo, p. 35). The com-plete Watson-Marlow Bredel peristal-tic range covers flowrates up to 350gal/min and pressures up to 230 psi.

For demanding hygienic applica-tions, Bioengineering (Waltham,

Mass.) offers a dual-diaphragm pump(photo). For the pharmaceutical, foodand cosmetic industries it offers ac-curate and controlled flow in either

direction, thanks in part to the use ofpositively actuated diaphragm valves.Made from mirror-polished 316Lstainless steel and PTFE, the pump

delivers pressures up to 6 bar, has zerodead volume, can be sterilized andcleaned-in-place, is self-priming, andcan run dry without damage.
