7th - 11th November 2006There really is something for everyone in this year’s jam-packed programme.

We are delighted to screen a very special preview of the much anticipated family feature film The Ugly Duckling and Me. This innovative 3D animation was produced here in Galway and we are very grateful to Eclipse Pictures for giving us the opportunity to screen this wonderful film at our festival.

We have two extended programmes of short films made by young people through our own Young Film Makers Project, Galway Film Centre’s Flying Film Squads, Youth Theatre Groups and individuals making their own movies at home. We also screen the Fresh Film Showcase which has films made by young people from Dublin, Cork and Cavan. It’s fantastic to see the wealth of imagination and talent that’s out there.

Children of Allah is a wonderful documentary which gives us some insight into the daily lives of young Muslim boys in an orphanage in Kerala, India. This sensitive and enlightening film was made by two young talented film makers, Keith Walsh and Jill Beardsworth. We thank them for their participation and all proceeds from the screening will go to the orphanage in India.

A Kid’s Life is a programme of six excellent short films which deal with issues ranging from loss, neglect, love and bullying to more surreal and sacrilegious matters. Thanks to Philip Ilson from the Halloween Short Film Festival for his contribution to this programme.

Two further films coming from the Muslim experience are Offside from Iran, a comic gem that cleverly manages to deal with Iran’s repressive laws in a funny, light-hearted way and Le Grand Voyage, a powerful, moving road movie which brings us some incredible scenes of Mecca at it’s climax.

Further screenings include the excellent German thriller The Edukators and two Leaving Certificate films My Left Foot and The Truman Show. As always a big thanks to Alicia McGivern at the IFI for her input. Special screenings for our visit to Ballygar in the Cinemobile include the recent releases Cars for the younger audiences and the award-winning The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

Some Fun Shorts is another treat for animation fans with some wacky and beautiful films from the UK, Germany, Ireland and the USA.

As always we are very grateful to The Arts Council, Galway County and City Councils and all our sponsors for their continued support.

Le Grand Voyage

A few weeks before his college entrance exams, Reda, a young man who lives in the south of France, finds himself forced to drive his devout, elderly father to Mecca on a once-in-a-lifetime religious pilgrimage. Their 3,000 mile journey takes them through Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Saudi Arabia.

What follows is a powerful, moving drama which highlights the many differences between father and son, generational, religious and linguistic, but ultimately their pilgrimage also becomes a journey towards reconciliation.

Not only does Le Grand Voyage successfully challenge cultural preconceptions of Islamic belief, but in the climactic scenes amidst the collective fervour of Mecca, it achieves an unexpected emotional intensity.

The Edukators Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei

Jan and Peter are young anti-globalisation protesters who spend their nights breaking into the homes of Berlin’s elite. Their aim is not to steal from the wealthy but to warn them that their “days of plenty are numbered”. They are brothers with a cause and christen themselves ‘The Edukators’.

Julia, Peter’s girlfriend, gets involved and when a job goes badly wrong, they find themselves kidnapping a businessman – ironically himself a former radical. Together in a cabin, the group learn about one another’s ideals and disillusionments and have to face up to some realities.

The Edukators is a smart, tense, evocative thriller.

Offside is a hilarious, comic and hugely entertaining film, cleverly illustrating the fight for women’s rights in Iran. The film depicts an incident during the 2005 World Cup qualification match between Iran and Bahrain at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran. A teenage girl disguised as a boy tries to gain entry to the stadium where the match is due to kick off. But in Iran, females are forbidden by law from attending football matches, so she and some other street smart female football fans end up being detained by soldiers and kept together in a corner of the stadium where they can be isolated from the male crowds.

Frustratingly, during their detention, these avid female fans can hear the various shouts and roars from the spectators, but they cannot see any of the footballing action. Instead they spend their time arguing and debating with their increasingly reluctant captors.

Winner of the prestigious Silver Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, Offside is an entertaining, accessible critique of Iran’s repressive laws, a comic and exuberant film which makes its point beautifully and with great compassion.

Children of Allah

Children of Allah documents the lives of a group of boys living in a Muslim orphanage in Kerala, India. It is an unobtrusive, engaging and affectionate portrayal of their daily life. While exploring the impact Islam has on their lives as well as the relationships they have formed within the confines of the orphanage, this documentary acts as a testament to the power of the human spirit.

The unhurried pace of the narrative coupled with the sensitive approach and unconscious presence of the camera allows the viewer to participate in the daily rituals and to inhabit the world of the orphanage. As this inviting journey unfolds, we get to know some of the boys who live there and how this orphanage provides a home for them, something their own homes could not do. This unity and sense of family is in sharp contrast to their difficult backgrounds.

Filmed over a year and a half, during two trips to India, the film is the first feature documentary from filmmakers Keith Walsh and Jill Beardsworth who shot, directed and edited the film themselves. The film was produced by Donal R. Haughey (Hawkeye Films).

All proceeds from this screening will go to the orphanage in India.

The Ugly Duckling and Me

Ratso, a success-starved rodent impresario, is forced to stay in a duckyard and persuades its hostile inhabitants that he is the father of a stray ugly duckling. When he discovers Ugly has an unusual talent, he schemes to make sideshow history and his own fortune by exploiting the young bird. The unlikely pair set off on a perilous journey towards their big breakthrough, but dangerous foes, teenage problems and unexpected paternal feelings dog their path.

The Ugly Duckling and Me, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale, is reinvented in this innovative 3D animated comedy produced in Galway by Magma Films; and featuring a cinema debut by Irish writer Mark Hodkinson.

Workshops Programme

Lunchbox Animation Workshops in association with Galway Film CentreSaturday 11th November, 10.30am - 1.00pm. 9 - 12 years

An exciting way for a class to explore creative story-telling and visual images through animation using the Animation Lunchbox. Participants will be shown under the watchful eye of Aideen Barry, visual artist, how to create their own images and characters and transform this into a short animated film. Watching the images come alive before their very eyes! This workshop is for young people aged 9 - 12 years and each participant will be given a DVD copy of the animations after the workshop.

This year we will be running our Make Up for Film & TV Workshop again with Joanne Boyle who has worked extensively in the industry. Participants will be given a demonstration on how to create all kinds of characters using the tricks of trade before being transformed into characters themselves! A Polaroid will be taken of each participant at the end of the workshop as a keepsake of the day.

This lively and fun two hour workshop (aimed at second level students) with Trevor Ó Clochartaigh (director Fair City, series producer Ros na Rún) will focus on how to prepare for an audition, the differences between screen and television acting and basic acting techniques.
