Cultural Studies Cultural Studies
From Theory to Action
Edited by PEPI LEISTYNALeistyna, Pepi
University of Massachusetts at Boston
“It should help return the field of cultural studies to some of the importantpolitical concerns that initially inspiredit and gave it vitality.”
ARIF DIRLIK, UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
This landmark collection of key works
reinstates the political dimension into the
cultural studies project, demonstrating how
theory can be translated into social, political,
and cultural action. This dynamic volume
brings together work undertaken in
globalization, class analysis, media and
representational politics, racism, sexism, and
heterosexism. It uniquely juxtaposes major
theoretical pieces with ‘micro-literatures’ by
activists, artists, and teachers who are
striving hard to put theory into practice.

Questions ofMethod inCultural Studies of Method in Cultural Studies
Edited by MIMI WHITE & JAMES SCHWOCHWHITE, MIMI; SCHWOCH, JAMES
Both Northwestern University
QUESTIONS OF METHOD IN CULTURAL
STUDIES is a lively collection of work
from across the social sciences and
humanities which brings together
scholars to consider one of the most
vexing issues confronting the
proverbial ‘anti-discipline’ of cultural
studies.
2 Covers such topics as the media,
feminism, and politics
2 Identifies what methods have
prevailed in the interdisciplinary
pursuit of cultural studies, and
sketches out a methodological
paradigm
2 Analyzes what kinds of
methodological choices are
made, privileged, even attacked
in the academy and among the
disciplines.
Examining the relationship between
cultural studies and traditional
disciplines, the politics of knowledge,
and spatial and temporal models, this
book probes the possibility of method
in explicit terms for scholars and
students in media, communications,
sociology and allied fields.

Inventing Intelligence Inventing Intelligence
A Social History of Smart
PAUL MICHAEL PRIVATEERPrivateer, Paul
Arizona State University
What is intelligence? What makes humans
homo sapiens - the intelligent species?
Uncoupling our understanding of this most
familiar concept from its traditional social
science moorings, this book trains a cultural
studies lens on intelligence to expose it as yet
another form of representation.
Paul Privateer charts the history of intelligence
from its earliest articulations through to
postmodern AI. Individual chapters recount the
loving spheres of divine intelligence imagined
by Plato, the self-conscious stylings of the
Renaissance Man, the politics of intelligence in
the Enlightenment, as well as contemporary
assessments of digital intelligence and the
mysterious adventure of Einstein’s brain.
Ambitious in its historical sweep, unflinching in
its challenge to conventional wisdom,
INVENTING INTELLIGENCE is for everyone and
anyone who used to think that the parameters
and the stakes of intelligence had been
negotiated and finalized.

The Future of Society uture of Society, The
WILLIAM OUTHWAITEOUTHWAITE, WILLIAM
University of Sussex
“A splendid and spirited work which will provoke a necessary debate.”
KRISHAN KUMAR, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
Is the notion of society obsolete? To answer this
question, leading social theorist William Outhwaite
considers various critiques of the concept that have
dominated recent debate, including the diverse
arguments of neo-liberals, postmodernists,
globalization theorists, and evolutionary psychologists.
Outhwaite takes a sympathetic look at these current
theoretical trends, using them to explain why we
have lost confidence in the concept of society. He
argues, however, that we do still need the concept in
order to make sense of the forces which structure our
lives.

specific technologies, ethical regimes, and

Public relations is a multibillion
dollar industry dedicated to
public communication. Unlike its
sister field of advertising, public
relations is nearly invisible to
most people outside of the
industry. People do not ‘see’ the
way public relations shapes their
news, influences societal values,
or delivers important health
related information. Even many
newcomers to public relations
do not see beyond the writing
of news releases to appreciate
the effects public relations has
on society. When it is
considered at all, public relations
is often either accepted
unthinkingly as a positive tool
by large organizations or is the
subject of overly harsh critiques
in the popular press.
This book seeks to provide a
balanced view between public
relations as ‘all good’ and public
relations as ‘pure evil’ in its
impact on society. In addition to
looking at corporate issues in
PR, the book further examines
PR as a tool for marginalized
groups, including useful
discussions of power issues in
public relations theory and
practice.

Sex and Indecency in Broadcasting
ROBERT L. HILLIARD & MICHAEL C. KEITHHilliard, Robert; Keith, Michael

Renowned media scholars and authors
Robert Hilliard and Michael Keith examine
the blue side of the airways in DIRTY
DISCOURSE: SEX AND INDECENCY IN
BROADCASTING. This first-ever analysis of the
history and nature of off-color program
content explores the treatment of once-
forbidden topics in the electronic media,
investigating the
beliefs, attitudes
and actions of
those who present
such material,
those who
condemn it, and
those who
defend it.
Written from a
social and cultural perspective, DIRTY
DISCOURSE concentrates on the means of
greatest distribution - radio, with its
phenomenal growth of ‘shock jocks’ and rap
music lyrics - and provides some coverage
of television and the Internet. The book
shows how and why broadcasting has
evolved from the ribald antics of the
Roaring 20s to today’s shock jocks and
streaming cybersex. This paperback edition
also now includes coverage of the Janet
Jackson scandal. It examines political
pressures and legal considerations,
including Supreme Court decisions, and
efforts to protect children from media smut.

This introduction to the art of rhetoric argues that
knowledge of rhetoric improves deliberation about
particular issues and problems. By mastering rhetorical
concepts and modes of argument, readers can address
the sometimes turbulent circumstances in their own
lives, times, and fields of study. But because rhetoric
speaks to the demands of the moment, it must be
practiced with an understanding of its historical context.

The Future ofEnvironmental Criticism vironmental Criticism, The
Environmental Crisis and Literary Imagination
LAWRENCE BUELLBUELL, Lawrence
Harvard University
This manifesto summarizes the disparate critical
practices that constitute
‘ecocriticism’. Lawrence Buell,
one of the world’s leading
theorists in this field, traces
the ecocritical movement
back to its roots in the 1970s,
through its coalescence into
a recognizable entity in the
early 1990s, to its
diversification and
proliferation today. He addresses questions currently
facing the discipline, such as: why has the interest in
environmental literary and cultural studies so quickly
increased? What is the meaning of ‘place’ in a globalizing
world? And how do aesthetic, ethical, and political
concerns interact and collide in ecocritical work?

JOKE HERMESHermes, Joke
University of Amsterdam
“A bold book, written with passionand verve, that challenges us totake a serious look at the role ofpopular culture in creating citizenship and democracy. It isthat rare thing: a brilliant book forstudying methods but also a political call for engagement.”
CHRISTINE GERAGHTY,
UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW
RE-READING POPULAR CULTURE is a key
guide to understanding the meanings
and value of popular culture today. It
explores the theme of cultural
citizenship by combining textual
analysis and media reception theory
to analyze popular culture. It includes
such contemporary issues as the
rewriting of masculinity after the
success of feminism, and the layers of
meaning in semi-public and private
talk of multiculturalism and ethnicity.
Joke Hermes tackles a variety of
media forms and texts, including
sports, detective fiction and police
series, and children’s television and
games. This is a fascinating and
illuminating study of popular culture
and its audience.

New Approaches to Film GenreSeries Editor: BARRY KEITH GRANTBrook University, Canada
This series provides students and teachers with original, insightful, and entertaining overviews of major film genres.
Each book in the series gives an historical appreciation of its topic, from its origins to the present day, and identifies
and discusses the important films, directors, trends, and cycles.
From Shane to Kill BillFrom Shane to Kill Bill
Rethinking the Western
PATRICK McGEEMcGee, Patrick
Louisiana State University
Original and compelling, FROM SHANE TO KILL BILL re-thinks what American
Western film has to offer us as a genre. Westerns have succeeded in dramatizing
the individual, defining the frontier myth, and promoting the limits of masculinity.
In tracing the development of the Western from 1939 to the present, this
entertaining book demonstrates that the genre is also a successful vehicle for
articulating class resentments and the social contradictions in American culture.
Offering sensitive readings that extend and deepen our understanding of the American West - from Shane,
Stagecoach and The Searchers to Pale Rider, Unforgiven, and Kill Bill - this book discusses the Western in new and
insightful ways. McGee appreciates the limits of this film genre, but also articulates its positive political value as an
expression of social desires typically unspoken in American public discourse. Informative and compelling, this book
suggests new understandings of this much-discussed genre.

RICK WORLANDWORLAND, RICK

Images, characters, and scenes from horror movies permeate our cultural
consciousness. Rick Worland delves into this, examining the ways in which
horror movies have been produced, received, and interpreted by filmmakers, audiences,
and critics throughout the medium’s history, from the l920s to the l990s. This concise volume offers a broad,
historical introduction to cinematic horror, outlining and investigating important issues in the production,
consumption, and cultural interpretation of the genre.
THE HORROR FILM surveys the various cultural antecedents of the horror film - in art, literature, and theater - for the
themes and motifs they share. Combining historical narrative with close readings of nine significant horror films -
including Frankenstein, Cat People, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Bram
Stoker’s Dracula - The Horror Film will be the definitive read for any movie-goer who thrills to a great and gory scare.

its implications for behavior,
social construction of reality and
learning, this volume leads the
reader to ask important
questions regarding education
for media literacy and
broadcasting policy.
With a distinctively international approach, CHILDREN AND
TELEVISION highlights the global perspective in each of the
chapters, balancing the need to contextualize television in
children’s lives in their unique cultural spaces, as well as searching
for universal understandings that hold true for children around the
world.

This volume addresses seven
philosophically significant questions
regarding feminism, its central
concepts of sex and gender, and the
project of centering women’s
experience. The well-chosen essays
contemplate the nature of sexist
oppression; the sex/gender
distinction; how gender-based norms
influence conceptions of rationality,
knowledge, and scientific objectivity;
feminist ethics; feminist perspectives
on self and autonomy; whether there
exist distinct feminine moral
perspectives; and what would

Women and Media Women and Media
A Critical Introduction
CAROLYN M. BYERLY & KAREN ROSSBYERLY, CAROLYN; Ross , Karen
Howard University; Coventry University
WOMEN AND MEDIA is a thoughtful cross-
cultural examination of the ways in which
women have worked inside and outside
mainstream media organizations since the
1970s. The book provides an overview of
the key issues and developments in
feminist media critiques and interventions
over the last 30 years, beginning with the
extant literature in this growing field and
ending with a new study of women’s
media activism in 20 nations.
The authors recount and analyze the first-
hand narratives of nearly 100 women
media activists whose work has contributed
to the making of a feminist public sphere
that has moved women leaders and
agendas more forcefully into their
societies. This highly original empirical
base, and the model of Women’s Media
Action that the authors developed, provide
a unique account of women’s struggles to
improve, create and otherwise employ
media in pushing for social change.
The book is written in a concise, engaging
style, laying out the central concerns about
the women-media relationship as it has
operated in a variety of political/critical
contexts. It can be used alongside Women
and Media: International Perspectives
(Blackwell Publishing 2004), by the same
editors.

The Idea ofEnglish Ethnicity nglish Ethnicity, The
ROBERT J.C. YOUNGYoung, Robert
New York University
In recent years, particularly since
devolution in the UK, there have been
many attempts to identify exactly
what constitutes Englishness. In this
major contribution to debates about
English identity, leading theorist
Robert Young argues that the recent
uncertainty about the nature of the
English arises from more than just the
challenges of devolution.
Young argues that instead it is the
long-term result of the fact that in the
nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries, Englishness was never really
about England, its essence or national
character, at all. Rather, it was
developed as a form of long-distance
nationalism, as an ethnic identity for
those who were precisely not English,
but rather made up the English
diaspora around the world: Americans,
Canadians, Australians, New
Zealanders, and South Africans.
Englishness was constructed as a
translatable quality or identity that
could be taken on or appropriated
anywhere, which is why the most
English Englishmen have always been
Americans.

processes such as migration, families, work, and war.
Rather than simply teaching history, AMERICAN
IDENTITIES actively engages students in the history-
making process while developing the skills crucial to
interpreting meaningful and enduring cultural texts.

construction and meaning of ‘types’, and the uses and politics of photography, film, bodily
display, and documentaries - the volume underscores the productivity of the visual in thinking
about race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and regionality. It clearly demonstrates that the ways in
which people see and are seen determine who they are and how they see themselves as
citizens and Americans.
Suggested readings, a primer on how to ‘read’ an image, and a listing of visual archives and
collections complete the volume, making this an indispensable text for those in American
studies and related fields.

GAIL McDONALDMCDONALD, GAIL
University of North Carolina at Greensboro
This introduction to American
literature and culture addresses four
common conceptions of the United
States: that it is ‘big’, ‘rich’, ‘new’, and
‘free’. Designed to illustrate the
artistic and social climate in the USA
from 1900 to 1960, the book
discusses a range of artistic and
cultural productions from the period
that reinforce, revise, dispute, or
deny these commonly held views of
the country.
