Classical SociologicalTheory l Sociological Theory
Second Edition
Edited byCRAIG CALHOUN,JOSEPH GERTEIS,JAMES MOODY,STEVEN PFAFF &INDERMOHAN VIRK CALHOUN , CRAIG
New York University; University of Minnesota; Ohio State University;University of Washington; Indiana University, Bloomington
This comprehensive collection of classical
sociological theory is a definitive guide to the
roots of sociology. For the second edition, selected
readings provide students with clearer introductions
to classical theory, providing examples and showing
connections to current sociology. There is an
entirely new section with new readings on the
immediate “pre-history” of sociological theory,
including the Enlightenment and de Tocqueville.
Editorial introductions put the readings into
historical and intellectual perspective, making this
an authoritative and compact survey of the most
representative works of classical social theory, and
an essential text for undergraduate courses. The
approach of giving substantial primary source
texts rather than merely ‘snippets’, and backing
these up with substantial introductions, is
maintained for the new edition.

The Future of Society uture of Society, The
WILLIAM OUTHWAITEOUTHWAITE , WILLIAM
University of Sussex
“An original, challenging, and timelydefense of the concept of society, this isan excellent introduction to contemporarysources and debates.”
DAVID FRISBY, LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS
& POLITICAL SCIENCE
Is the notion of society obsolete?
To answer this question, leading social theorist
William Outhwaite first considers various
critiques of the concept that have dominated
recent debate, including the arguments of:
2 Neo-liberals, who deny society’s existence
2 Postmodernists, who argue that it has
fragmented or dissolved
2 Globalization theorists, who claim that it
cannot survive the demise of the
nation-state.
Outhwaite takes a sympathetic look at these
current theoretical trends, using them to
explain why we have lost confidence in the
concept of society. He argues, however, that
we do still need the concept in order to
make sense of the forces which structure
our lives.
Part of the prestigious Blackwell Manifestos
series, this important book goes to the heart
of contemporary social and political debate.

This book explores the development, content, and
impact of world culture. Combining two of the
most fruitful theoretical perspectives on world
culture - the world polity approach and globalization
theory - the book traces the development of world
culture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. It includes exten-
sive illustrations of key issues and empirical research, gives a historical treat-
ment of the development of world culture, and assesses the complex impact

College of William and Mary, Virginia; Tulane University
Why are the poor countries poor? What should they do to turn their
situations around? What happens to countries and individuals when
they move from being ‘backwards’ to being ‘modern’? What does it
mean to ‘develop’ and be ‘modern’ anyway? What are the social effects
of the processes of worldwide economic, cultural, and political
integration called globalization?
THE GLOBALIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT READER builds on the success of
From Modernization to Globalization, published by the editors in 2000, to
provide an up-do-date primer and key reference for students, scholars
and development practitioners wishing to get up to speed quickly on
the issues of processes of social change and development in the ‘Third

writings in the development literature. A general editorial introduction

“Global Movements is essential reading forall those trying to understand our 21st-centurysociety. It is the first complex account of newforms of worldwide protest and society.”
TIM JORDAN, OPEN UNIVERSITY
The past decade has witnessed an extraordinary
rise of new global movements that throw into
question the way we think about culture, power
and action in a globalizing world. This book:
2 Examines three of the most significant global
social movements of the last decade: anti-
globalization, new Islamic movements, and
the Falun Gong in China
2 Explores key dimensions of these
movements, the tensions they confront, and
the crises that created them
2 Demonstrates how these global movements
require a rethinking of the very idea of social
movements.
GLOBAL MOVEMENTS will provide an essential text
for students of globalization and social movements.

Social Movements Social Movements
An Introduction
Second Edition
DONATELLA DELLA PORTA & MARIO DIANIDELLA PORTA , DONATELLADIANI , MARIO
European University Institute; University of Trento
“As in the first edition, the authors offer excellent framing of debates and issues in thefield and thorough coverage of the literature. This is the most comprehensive text in thefield and a must-read for serious students of social movements.”
VERTA TAYLOR, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SANTA BARBARA
SOCIAL MOVEMENTS is a comprehensive introduction and critical analysis of collective
action in society today. In the latter part of the last century, social movements became a
permanent feature of modern democracies. The students’ and workers’ protests of the
1960s have been followed by movements focusing on women's rights, ethnic identities,
peace and environmental issues. This book draws on research and empirical work across
the social sciences to address the key questions in this international field.
In this new edition, the authors have updated all chapters with the most recent literature,
and expanded on topics such as individual motivations, new media, public policies, and
governance. The book has also been redesigned to a more user-friendly format. More
than ever, SOCIAL MOVEMENTS is the ideal introduction for students of social movements
within social and political science.

An Overview
LYNN S. CHANCER & BEVERLY XAVIERAWATKINSCHANCER , LYNNWATKINS , BEVERLY XAVIERA
Fordham University; ColumbiaUniversity
GENDER, RACE, AND CLASS is a critical overview of
these three well-known dimensions of the social
world. The study of these as a combined topic has
evolved over the years, and this concise, accessible
volume shows why the subject continues to resonate
both in and outside the academy. Drawing on both
scholarly and popular cultural examples to illustrate
the workings of gender, race, and class, the book
synthesizes the wealth of research on each of the
topics, while also presenting a set of intellectually
and politically compelling reasons for analyzing
them together. Students and scholars will find this an
ideal text for understanding and utilizing the basic
concepts and theories underlying contemporary
studies of social inequalities.

For all his pre-eminence, Pierre Bourdieu had
little to say about women or gender. Yet, as
this volume amply demonstrates, the richness
of his social theory can be opened up by
contemporary feminism.

Cities of Whiteness Cities of Whiteness
WENDY S. SHAWShaw , Wendy S.
University of New South Wales
In CITIES OF WHITENESS, Wendy Shaw challenges existing ideas about
urban change, race and cosmopolitan urbanism. By questioning the
notion of white ethnicity and engaging with indigenous peoples’
experiences of whiteness - past and present, Shaw provides new ways
of seeing cities and of conceptualising the processes of power that are
at work within them. In doing so, she pushes the boundaries of critical
race studies in geography and studies of the city more broadly.
CITIES OF WHITENESS follows three main theoretical trajectories: it
highlights the weaknesses of current theories of whiteness; it demonstrates
how urban transformation is imbued with processes of whiteness; and
it gives an account of formations of power. Shaw grounds her analysis
using Sydney as an example of a ‘city of whiteness’ considering trends
such as Sydney’s ‘SoHo Syndrome’, the ‘Harlemisation’ of the Aboriginal
community, and the ‘Manhattanising’ of Sydney as it has evolved vertically.

Targeting Immigrants Targeting Immigrants
Government, Technology, and Ethics
JONATHAN XAVIER INDAINDA , JONATHAN XAVIER
University of California, Santa Barbara
TARGETING IMMIGRANTS is concerned with the government of ’illegal’
immigration since passage of the US Immigration Act of 1965. It
explores how certain mentalities and intellectual machineries have
rendered illegal immigrants as targets of government. It goes on to
examine how authorities of various kinds - from social scientists,
politicians, and government bureaucrats to policy analysts and the
public at large - have created knowledge about and constructed illegal
immigration as an ethical problem to be addressed and rectified.

From Biotechnology to the Internet
DANIEL LEE KLEINMANKLEINMAN , DANIEL LEE
University of Wisconsin-Madison
“Kleinman has written a wise and instructive book thatis certain to help the next generation of students fromall disciplines understand the increasingly criticalissues in science, technology, and society.”
DAVID GUSTON, ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
This thoughtful and engaging text challenges the widely
held notion of science as somehow outside of society, and
the idea that technology proceeds automatically down a
singular and inevitable path. Through specific case
studies involving contemporary debates, this book
shows that science and technology are fundamentally
part of society and are shaped by it.
Drawing on concepts from political sociology,
organizational analysis, and contemporary social theory,
this book is a first-rate study of technoscience that
places power, stratification, and discourse at its center.
Avoiding dense theoretical debate, this book is ideal for
those interested in science and technology studies.

based projections about how these relationships are
likely to develop in the future.

sociology of education and the sociology of work

This collection examines the concept of work,
questioning what constitutes work, where work ends
and other activities begin, and how different forms of
labour are organized across and within societies. It
asks what might be required of ‘a new sociology of
work’ and why such a project is vital for understanding
people’s working lives at the start of the twenty-first
century.

Edited by CAMPBELL JONES & ROLLAND MUNROJONES, CAMPBELL MUNRO, ROLLAND
University of Leicester; Univeristy of Keele
Organization, once a mainstay of sociological
inquiry, has again become a key site in the
rethinking of the social sciences. But despite
radical changes in recent years, many of the
more exciting recent ideas remain scattered
across a wide array of sources.
CONTEMPORARY ORGANIZATION THEORY
brings together in a single volume some of
the most important contemporary work in
the study of organization.
This edited collection will serve as an
important introduction for students of
organization and is essential reading for
scholars across the social sciences. Each of
the eighteen chapters introduces, reviews
and critically evaluates the work of a key
theorist writing over the last two decades.
Taking stock of the state of contemporary
organization theory, the contributors to this
volume engage powerfully with each theorist
and develop and extend their work.

Completely revised and updated to take full account of the most
recent and dramatic changes in the nature of American government,

conducted in the Global South and the Global North, in order to
enable key features of neoliberalisation to be understood more fully.

Edited by CHRISTIAN BARRY & THOMAS W. POGGEBARRY, CHRISTIAN POGGE, THOMAS
Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs; Australian National University andColumbia University
This volume combines original essays by political philosophers, legal
theorists, and economists into a spirited debate about the practical
dilemmas of globalization. It integrates rigorous thinking about the
principles of global justice with concrete discussions of the UN, the
WTO, the World Bank, and the rules of war. It thereby enriches moral
theorizing by engaging it in real-world issues and also provides solid
moral grounds for designing and assessing reforms of present
international rules and organizations.

Catalysing Development? A Debate on Aid Catalysing Development? A Debate on Aid
JAN P. PRONK ET AL.Former Minister for Development Co-operation of the Netherlands
In this volume, a select group of experts puts development
aid under the microscope. Examining its history, its
rationale, and its effectiveness, they reach some challenging
conclusions as to the part aid plays in catalysing, or indeed
stifling, development. While some argue that aid remains vital, and must be
maintained or increased, others are more sceptical, and fear that it may even
prolong underdevelopment in certain circumstances.

Thinking about Religion Thinking about Religion
An Historical Introduction to Theories of Religion
IVAN STRENSKISTRENSKI , IVAN
University of California, Riverside
Is the Bible unique and flawless divine revelation? Or is it
an historical human document subject to criticism? Is
religious experience a link to the divine? Or is it a product
of social pressure or psychological malformation? This
book tells the story of how and why classic theorists have
posed such questions, and how the theories and methods
of religious studies arose as attempts to answer them.

Despite the promise of freedom and
