Letter from the Co-Chairs

As Forever Young Foundation enters another year, we continue to be thankful for the wonderful work being done by the Forever Young “Family of Charities” as well as our Forever Young Zones. We are inspired by the growth, commitment, and service of all those who have joined us in this endeavor to pass on hope to children in need.

This past year has seen Forever Young expand our work for the first time to include children outside of the United States. Through the leadership of our trusted friend and fellow board member Bob Gay, we have embarked upon a journey that is bringing hope and resources to the children of Ghana, West Africa. On subsequent pages in this report, you will read of the exciting projects we have begun in Ghana and the quality organizations with which we have partnered. We are impressed with the people and government of Ghana and feel that the work we are doing there will have a profound impact upon this wonderful nation.

The remarkable foundations that continue to be the core of our Forever Young Charities are evolving to benefit even more children. These charities have been chosen because of their attention to maintaining a strong and efficient commitment to their charitable purposes. We have continued, and strengthened, our long-standing partnership with NFL Charities, restructuring some of our technology Zones into high-tech multimedia labs. We also continue to expand and enhance our hospital Zones, which bring hope and happiness to some of our communities’ most vulnerable children. We appreciate our many partners and donors; thanks to you, the future of Forever Young Foundation is indeed bright. As we move forward, we invite others to join with us as we seek to bless the lives of this world’s most precious resource – our children! Steve & Barb Young

Forever Young Foundation primarily focuses our efforts in Northern California, Arizona, Utah, and now most recently, Ghana, Africa. We have also joined the NFL in their nationwide project developing Youth Education Towns (YET). The Foundation’s development efforts include the creation of Forever Young Zones®, which include technology labs in YET Centers and state-of-the-art interactive play areas in children’s hospitals. foreveryoung.org

Forever Young in Ghana Right To Play

Forever Young Foundation is proud to partner with Olympic Champion Johann Olav Koss and Right To Play to create a healthier and safer Ghana through the power of sport and play. Right To Play uses specially designed sport and play programs to improve health, build life skills, and foster peace for children and communities affected by war, poverty, and disease. Steve Young is proud to be an Athlete Ambassador with Right To Play.

Interplast

Interplast is the first humanitarian organization to provide free reconstructive surgery for children with clefts, disabling burns, and hand injuries. Forever Young Foundation has provided funding to allow Interplast to bring its life-changing work to the children of Ghana. Through Visiting Educator Programs, Surgical Outreach Centers, and Volunteer Surgery Expeditions, Forever Young and Interplast will impact medical care in Ghana for generations to come.

Golden Sunbeam School

The Golden Sunbeam School strives to create a secure, happy, and challenging environment within which there is a clear sense of purpose and opportunity to develop children to their full potential. Forever Young Foundation has embarked upon a capital improvement project which will double the enrollment capacity at the school and refurbish and revitalize the existing facilities – ensuring that Sunbeam will continue to lead the way in training Ghana’s future leaders.

The Taylor Family Foundation

The Taylor Family Foundation (TTFF) has been committed to enhancing the quality of life for children in Northern California suffering from life-threatening illnesses and disabilities. Now in its second decade of operations, TTFF has helped over 12,000 children living with a variety of skin and heart diseases, Crohn’s, colitis, diabetes, autism, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. TTFF provides these children the opportunity to attend summer camp at Camp Arroyo, an experience most often denied them due to the physical restrictions of their illness or the financial limitations of their burdened families. By opening its doors to groups serving children with different ailments instead of focusing exclusively on a single illness, Camp Arroyo is able to enrich the lives of far more children. www.ttff.org

EB Medical Research Foundation

The EB Medical Research Foundation is a nonprofit, sole purpose foundation dedicated to the support of medical research of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) -- its causes, its cure, and the development of successful treatments. EB is a group of diseases characterized by blister formations after minor injury to the skin. This family of disorders, most of which are inherited, range in degrees of severity from mild to severely disabling and life-threatening. The EB Medical Research Foundation was established in 1991 by Gary and Lynn Fechser Anderson at the request of Dr. Eugene A. Bauer, then Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology, Stanford School of Medicine. The Andersons have lost two children, Chuck and Christine, to epidermolysis bullosa. ebkids.org

Wasatch Adaptive Sports

Wasatch Adaptive Sports is a premier ski and summer program for children with special needs. Wasatch Adaptive Sports offers ski lessons, snowshoe tours, and sledge hockey throughout the winter, and numerous outdoor recreational activities such as hiking on barrier-free trails, fishing, biking, tram rides, and environmental-awareness programs in the summer. With the aid of the Forever Young Foundation, the Wasatch Adaptive Sports program gave 1,500 lessons to special needs children in both the summer and winter. Participation this fiscal year increased by approximately 15% for the winter months and 20% for the summer months, a great boost to the program. At least 90-95% of the lessons provided by Wasatch Adaptive Sports are on either full or partial scholarship. School groups and private lessons are held during the week in the winter season with many private lessons and hospital groups on Saturdays. wasatchadaptivesports.org

ANASAZI Foundation

Founded in 1988 by Larry D. Olsen and Ezekiel C. Sanchez, ANASAZI Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) nationally accredited outdoor behavioral healthcare provider serving youth 12-17, young adults 18-25, and their parents. With remarkable results, the caring staff at ANASAZI provide treatment for substance abuse, depression, family conflict, and other concerns. The mission of ANASAZI is to prepare parents and children to turn their hearts to one another and walk in harmony in the wilderness of the world. Forever Young Foundation supports ANASAZI in its efforts, and provides scholarships to financially challenged families for whom the cost would otherwise be preclusive. anasazi.org

Forever Young Zones

Technology Forever Young Zones are interactive education rooms created to provide children in underserved communities with access to state-of-the-art technology as well as web-based education and training. These are attractive facilities that act as a safe haven for children to gather after school rather than on the streets. Forever Young Zones not only provide immediate help to underprivileged children, resulting in better grades and increased learning opportunities, but afford them the skills that will prepare them for the future. Many of the Zones are now in the process of being updated with multimedia capabilities which engage older teens in activities such as creating websites, recording music, and making movies. Hospital Forever Young Zones are recreational therapy rooms created to provide tools for exercising the imagination of seriously ill children who face emotional and physical challenges. Forever Young Foundation has completed two of these Zones, one at Primary Children’s Medical Center and the other at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. It has been found that child life specialists and psychosocial professionals are more effective in helping children cope in treatment rooms if they have related to them first in these Forever Young Zone playrooms. These Zones provide a sanctuary or safe place where staff can build supportive relationships with the children and teens to help them in their recovery processes. foreveryoung.org/zones

Forever Young Foundation again held its four annual fundraising events in 2006. A total of $1,066,653 was raised at these events while maintaining an admirable 5:1 revenue to expense ratio; thus, maximizing the dollars available for programs. An exciting addition was made to the Bay Area Classic as Jerry Rice and Steve Young have teamed up once again; this time on the golf course for the benefit of Bay Area children.
