Communism is when the government has complete control of the economy. There is no private ownership. All business, property, and economic matters are regulated by the government with the goal of promoting equality.
![Page 16: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Soviets were local groups of workers, soldiers, farmers, and peasants who began ruling their cities and towns in place of the Provisional Government.
The Soviets played a big role in assisting Lenin in his return to Russia and organizing the Bolsheviks to lead
a revolution.

What is totalitarianism?
![Page 25: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
A totalitarian government may have more than one leader. A totalitarian government controls every aspect of public and private life. A totalitarian
government is most commonly associated with communism, because of the level of
control this gives the government. A totalitarian government also uses fear
tactics as well as censorship and propaganda to keep the people in line.
![Page 26: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)

What are the characteristics of a
fascist government?
![Page 29: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
A fascist government has one leader. This leader demands complete and total loyalty to himself and the state. This type of system
usually elevates the wealthy and members of the military or state government. Often times fascist governments sponsor state run
industry/businesses, but not for the goal of equality (like in communism). Being disloyal to the leader means you are disloyal to the state. This type of leader often uses fear tactics to keep people
in line.
![Page 30: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Give three reasons people supported fascist regimes in
Europe in the inter-war years (1919 –
1939).

1. After WWI many countries lacked strong leadership (weak monarch in Italy and weak coalition gov’t in Germany) – people wanted strong leaders.2. Economic problems such as inflation and depression (both Germany and Italy).3. The strong emphasis on state and loyalty was appealing to countries that did not accomplish as much as they hoped in WWI (land gains for Italy, loss of war and war guilty for Germany).4. Use of fascist fear tactics, secret police, censorship & propaganda.

1. Germany was divided into zones by the Allied countries.2. The United Nations was formed.3. US emerged as a world super power (and the Soviet Union).4. Germany and Japan were de-militarized.5. Competition between the US and the USSR to create atomic weapons began.6. Europe and Japan went to periods of Allied occupation and rebuilding.

This is the metaphorical divide between communist
eastern Europe and non-communist western Europe. It was first used in a speech
by Winston Churchill.
![Page 43: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)

![Page 44: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Define containment.
![Page 45: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Containment was America’s policy during the Cold War to try and stop the spread of communism and the influence of the Soviet Union throughout Europe and the world. The Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan were put in place to work towards this goal.
![Page 46: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)

Domino theory is the belief that if one country in a region becomes communist that the surrounding
countries will fall to communism as well. This is the justification America
used for becoming involved in Vietnam.
![Page 48: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
What happened during the Great Leap Forward?
![Page 49: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
During the Great Leap Forward Mao Zedong tried to move China towards more efficient (communist) farming
techniques by introducing communes/collective farms. These
ended up being unsuccessful, resulting in massive crop failure and
country wide starvation.
![Page 50: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Why did the Cuban Missile Crisis happen?
![Page 51: 200](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062520/56815f3e550346895dce10b3/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
After the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion attempt, Fidel Castro allowed Nikita Khrushchev to set-up nuclear missile sites in Cuba. Khrushchev wanted to set-up these sites in Cuba in response to the USA’s missile sites in Turkey. When President Kennedy found out
about the missiles in Cuba he demanded they be removed. Khrushchev in turn demanded that the
missiles in Turkey be removed. This led to very tense negotiations between the US and the USSR that
eventually resulted in the removal of missiles from both locations.
