The morning’s events will focus on tolerance and diversity education as part of our school-wide conflict resolution program and tolerance grant for the 2005-2006 academic year. Our goal is to confront historic as well as recent examples of discrimination, racism and hate, and create a dialogue between students and educators about how we can work constructively to combat discrimination in our school and local communities. In an effort to address issues of discrimination in meaningful and productive ways, we have invited a number of well-respected and professional presenters from the community to discuss their views on tolerance today, and how discrimination affects the lives of all people. Please keep in mind that the guest speakers will be representing just some of the possible perspectives and viewpoints on issues of tolerance and diversity. Their presentations by no means cover all possible points-of-view. Students in the elementary grades will participate in the dedication of our Respect Wall at 8am, as well as discuss anti-bullying topics in the afternoon with Kelly Mitchell, our conflict resolution consultant and program leader. Students in grades 6-7 will spend much of the morning in the Auditeria addressing discrimination through a presentation led by Haviland Staggers and Jonathan Mello called “Snap Judgments.” Kelly Mitchell will also work with this group on addressing anti-bullying tactics and techniques. This program will be followed by a guest presentation from Mr. Jack Adler, a survivor of the Holocaust, who will share his personal story of surviving hate during WWII. Students in grades 8-12 will spend the morning in the North gym to hear an array of presentations, followed by in-depth breakout sessions and problem-solving activities with teachers and guest presenters. Kicking off their teach-in program will be Kelly Mitchell who will connect the day’s program to our efforts aimed at resolving conflicts on campus. His introduction will be followed by brief presentations of our guest speakers, including the Anti-Defamation League, the African Community Center, State Senator Brandon Shaffer, the Boulder County Aids Project (BCAP), the Safe Schools Coalition, Amnesty International, Deann Bucher who will address history’s discrimination against the gay and lesbian community, Andy McClure who will discuss universal themes of religious tolerance, Bill De La Cruz from Boulder’s Community United Against Hate Committee, Mr. Weatherbee who will address hate crimes, and Mr. Jack Adler. Our own Anita Chakaraborty-Spotts and Sage Barber-Smith will join presenters during the breakout sessions to address discrimination and anti-bullying. Tolerance Teach-In (Continued from Page 1) Families that would prefer not to have their students participate in any of the morning’s activities are welcome to send a note to Mr. Feddema in the Dean’s office, who will arrange a silent study hall. Please be sure that students come prepared with homework to complete between first and fifth periods. Normal classes will ensue after lunch. The social studies department would like to formally thank Carolyn Jannsen for her support of our tolerance teach-in program, as well as members of the Peak to Peak Board, administrators, teachers, the counseling department, peer mediators and student leaders who have helped to make the day’s events possible. Your vision and concern for the community inspired this program. Thank you for making tolerance education a part of Peak to Peak!

Dear Peak to Peak community members, Since coming to Peak to Peak I have been amazed and humbled by the generosity of our community. Whether it is with their time, talents, resources or gifts of monetary support, we have an incredibly generous community. Our dedicated volunteers visibly model to our students the importance of giving to our community, everyday. Thank you! As you may know, our Annual Gift Campaign is underway and letters have been mailed out to all community members. This is the biggest fundraiser for our school and one in which we strongly encourage participation from all of our families. As a Charter School we face the real challenge of operating with approximately $1300 less per pupil than other public schools. 100% participation from all of our families in this campaign benefits everyone by putting us in a better position to receive grant funding, developing our curriculum and technology plans, retaining our excellent teachers, building and expanding many programs and in general, affords us the opportunity to provide the best college preparatory education we can for your children. I want to personally thank everyone who has already donated. Your support is very much appreciated. For those of you who haven't had the opportunity yet, please consider a gift that is significant to your family. Together, we can meet the financial challenge we face and continue to advance the mission and vision of Peak to Peak Charter School. Our children deserve the best Peak to Peak can offer, and your generous donations will make sure we provide the best. With appreciation, Tony Fontana

T h e Pe a k t o P e a k community values each and every teacher, principal, and staff member. The Board of Directors, which includes

the Executive Principal, the Elementary Principal, the Secondary Principal and the Director of Operations, as well as elected board members, knows that our educators are vitally important to the success of our students and happiness of our children. For the current school year, Peak to Peak was able to retain fewer of its teachers than expected. The higher the number of teachers who return each year, the easier it is for staff to focus on continuing improvements in curriculum and delivery. Though there were various reasons for the departure of teachers, the lower retention rate was a clear indication to the board that additional attention should be focused on this vital area. In response, the board has initiated an ad-hoc committee which has selected the name “Focus on our Teachers.” Sheryl Genco, board member, and Nicky Zaayman, co-chair of the Hiring and Organizational Development Committee, are co-chairing this initiative. The group will meet to discuss and analyze survey information and interviews that have been conducted with existing and departing staff, then formulate a plan to give our teachers the additional support they may need to make Peak to Peak a long-term career choice. The group will solicit input from many people representing key areas within the school. Peak to Peak begins this year with an excellent group of highly qualified teachers under the supervision of two strong and experienced Principals, Ms Roni and Mr. Hazen, and the dynamic leadership of our continuing Executive Principal, Mr. Fontana. We all want to support our teachers in providing an excellent educational experience for our children. Look for updates on plans and progress from the Focus on our Teachers committee. Sheryl M. Genco

ALPs Corner

As the Alps coordinator of Peak to Peak I am responsible to make sure that all gifted and talented students are correctly placed in order for optimal learning to take place. I am also responsible to test students who have been nominated by a staff member, parent or themselves. All parents of gifted and talented students will receive a letter from me within the next week explaining what my plans and ideas for this year are. You might be asking yourself: How do I know my child is gifted and not just bright? Herewith a comparison between the two:

5th Grade BoysBasketball Assistant Coach Needed

We had a good turn out for the 5th grade and feel we will have enough talent for a team. This team will be playing in a Boulder YMCA League. Ned Otey will be coaching the team and will be providing details on practice times, games and the start of the season within the next week. Currently, Ned is the only coach for the 5th grade and will need some help. Ideally each coach would like two fathers/assistants to help the Head Coach with practice sessions and organizational issues. If you know someone that would like to volunteer their time please have them contact Ned at [email protected] Thank You, The P2P Coaching Club

Dress for the Weather

Please make sure that your children are appropriately dressed for the weather. As you know, the weather changes here very quickly. An extra hat, pair of gloves, etc. in your child’s backpack is a good idea. Please make sure even if the meteorologist says the temperatures will rise in the afternoon that your child is dressed for our chilly mornings.
