The All New Aquarium is Clear.

Nearly 33,000 square feet of translucent glass, 60,000 gallons of fresh water, and one enormous, invisible-metal screen separate the more than 1,800 animals living in Animal Planet Australia from the Inner Harbor. Visitors to the 12-story Glass Pavilion journey through the Australian landscape with an unobstructed view of Baltimore’s blue skies.

The All New Aquarium is resplendent.

Already a prominent and recognizable feature of the Baltimore skyline, the All New Aquarium now adds rich color and brilliant light to the City’s evening skies. The Glass Pavilion shines across the Inner Harbor, beckoning visitors from as far away as Darwin, Australia, and serving as yet another signal of Baltimore’s revitalization.

On the Cover

The All New Aquarium is inspiring.

Through its naturalistic and purposeful exhibitry, the All New Aquarium introduces youngsters to fascinating creatures, like the six-foot-long barramundi and snake-necked turtles of Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes. Conceived as a cross section of an Australian river gorge, with visitors traversing a dry streambed, the habitat allows children to experience the world from an aquatic animal’s perspective.

Dear Friends:

After more than seven years of planning, preparation, and construction, the National Aquarium in Baltimore’s Glass Pavilion opened in stages over the course of the last 12 months. Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes debuted on December 16, bringing 2005 to a close on an impressive note.

Pier 3’s Glass Pavilion reshaped the architectural face of downtown Baltimore and accomplished a monumental achievement in building design, engineering, habitat construction, life support, and visitor experience.

Animal Planet Australia signifies the benefits of business partnership. The Aquarium’s collaboration with Discovery Communication’s Animal Planet made this one-of-a-kind intercontinental experience possible. Directly beneath the habitat lies the Aquarium’s thriving new gift emporium, the Aquarium Shop. And the Aquarium Cafe, on the ground level, provides additional dining possibilities.

Our Pier 3 expansion created numerous opportunities to broaden our visitor’s experience throughout the Aquarium campus: the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Waterfront Park; our new Member Entrance, a gift to the Aquarium from the France-Merrick Foundation; the Visitor Welcome Center, a donation by the Blaustein, Rosenberg, and Thalheimer families; the Allegheny Cascades exhibit, a gift to the Aquarium from the Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds; the refurbished Lyn P. Meyerhoff Auditorium; and the River Gorge Overlook from the Hoffberger Foundation.

As if there were not enough happening during 2005, we also built and populated the immensely successful Frogs! A Chorus of Colors exhibit on both levels of Pier 4. This interactive and engrossing exhibit spotlights the amazing and colorful world of amphibians and the importance of protecting frogs and their habitats.

December culminated a year of amazing accomplishment and change throughout the entire Aquarium. The Boards were restructured to reflect contemporary needs; we prepared for a very successful accreditation from our professional organization; staff published numerous articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals; and volunteers provided the Aquarium with services valued at $1.5 million – a record.

This year’s annual report allows us to display the spectacular views of the new Glass Pavilion in full color from dramatic angles and unexpected heights; to reflect on the substantial accomplishments of 2005; and to provide heartfelt gratitude to you and the many individuals, groups, government leaders, and corporate partners who support our mission and values.

The All New Aquarium Is You.

A Change in GovernanceThe Aquarium’s Board of Governors approved the formation of the National Aquarium Institute. The Institute’s Affiliates – the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Inc., the National Aquarium in DC, the National Aquarium Foundation, and the Center for Aquatic Life and Conservation – adopted new By-laws and Charters defining the new governance structure.

Aswim in the Nursery PoolIn June, the Pier 4 Pavilion’s nursery pool became active once again when Nani delivered her calf. Beau, a healthy male, was the eighth dolphin born at the Aquarium and Nani’s second successful birth.

Leading the InfoTech WaveThe Aquarium’s Information Technology Department organized and chaired the 2005 Zoo and Aquarium Information Technology Conference. More than 50 IT professionals from zoos and aquariums around the world participated.

Environmental HeroesThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) honored the Aquarium Conservation Team (ACT!) and staff of the Chesapeake Bay Initiative with its Environmental Hero Award.

Aquarium in PrintMarine Mammals Ashore: A Field Guide for Strandings, 2nd Edition was released as a National Aquarium in Baltimore publication. Used as a training manual by the US National Marine Mammal Stranding Network and others, the book has been purchased by network participants in 19 countries.

An Uncommon AccomplishmentCommon Waters, an internal Aquarium program that fosters diversity awareness among staff, received the 2005 James W. Rouse Diversity Award, presented annually by the Chesapeake Human Resources Association.

Pier 4 TransformedThe Aquarium debuted a stunning, two-level exhibition: Frogs! A Chorus of Colors. The reconfigured Pier 4 Pavilion includes engaging interactives, the redesigned Children’s Discovery Corner, and 15 realistic habitats housing more than 20 species of colorful amphibians.

Grass RootsA 16-year restoration project by federal and state agencies uses beneficial dredge materials to restore the Chesapeake Bay’s disappearing Poplar Island. The Aquarium Conservation Team led the first community-based volunteer initiative in support of the restoration project: 189 volunteers dedicated 2,360 hours and planted a six-acre site with more than 143,000 native marsh grasses.

Almost ThereIn September, the Aquarium gave visitors selective access to the new glistening Glass Pavilion: the multi-story entryway, expanded guest services and amenities, a brand new dining option and impressive shopping emporium, and a concourse gateway to favorite exhibits on Piers 3 and 4.

Dedicated, Indispensable With a record contribution of 113,000 hours in 2005, volunteers provided the Aquarium with services valued at $1.5 million. In the Student Summer Program, high schoolers logged over 7,500 hours, contributing $72,000 in support of the Aquarium.

Advancing QualityThe introduction of new water analysis methodology helped to meet the increasing demands of the Aquarium, its Animal Care Center, the National Aquarium in DC, and the Centers of Marine Biotechnology. The system is more precise, requires smaller sample volumes, and reduces chemical waste.

By the NumbersPreparing to open Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes, Aquarium curators acquired and acclimated more than 1,800 Australian animals including 37 species of fish, 31 species of reptiles, 31 species of birds, three species of amphibians, three of invertebrates, and one mammal. Water quality specialists monitored nine new pools and hundreds of gallons of water that cascade each minute over the exhibit’s massive waterfall. Horticulturists governed the delivery, placement, and care of some 150 indigenous Australian trees and plants.

Votes of Confidence Voters approved the Aquarium’s Baltimore City bond referendum of $1.5 million for fiscal 2006 and 2007. The Maryland General Assembly approved $2.59 million in funding for the Aquarium. Application CommendationThe 2005 American Zoo and Aquarium Association Annual Conference showcased the Aquarium’s application for accreditation renewal as a model of completeness, organization, and artistry.

More Applause for Play! The opening video created for the dolphin show Play! received 2005 Telly Awards for editing and video production. A Gold Aurora Award for editing turned up the applause for this original production.

Shared KnowledgeIn 2005, Biological Programs staff authored or co-authored articles in 14 peer-reviewed scientific journals and books. Topics ranged from hematology of sandbar sharks and amphibian gastroenterology to box turtle pet care and the effects of marsh restoration on fish.

With a Lot of Help from Our FriendsThe Opening Eyes, Changing Lives Capital Campaign celebrated a successful multi-year initiative with $17.9 million pledged by private, public, and corporate entities. During 2005, corporate partners stepped forward to help launch the All New Aquarium with commitments of $2.2 million in cash and in-kind sponsorships.

Sparkling Under GlassDecember sparkled with pre-opening activities celebrating the All New Aquarium and Glass Pavilion. A glittering black-tie gala wowed 800 guests; morning and evening previews delighted over 6,000 Aquarium members; thank you receptions honored major donors; and a sneak peak for the press drew over 100 journalists and Animal Planet’s Jeff Corwin for a tour of Animal Planet Australia.

A Grand OccasionOn December 16, a didjeridoo summoned guests to the Opening Ceremonies. Government and corporate leaders offered celebratory toasts, school children serenaded with Aussie tunes, and the dramatic toss of a ceremonial boomerang heralded the opening of Animal Planet Australia.

Welcome to Australia“G’Day Mates!” greeted Opening Weekend visitors who enjoyed entertainment from Down Under, interactive puppetry, didjeridoo demonstrations, music and special activities for youngsters, habitat tours led by outback-clad volunteers, commemorative tickets, and other specially themed memorabilia.

2005 highlighTs

The All New Aquarium is innovative.

Hundreds of gallons of fresh water rush past the hand-carved Australian rockwork every minute and tumble down a spectacular 35-foot-tall waterfall – the second tallest free-falling waterfall in the state – in the Allegheny Cascades, a gift to the Aquarium from the Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds. An unforgettable welcome to Baltimore’s visitors, the pounding waterfall plunges into a pool of large, western Maryland-native fish, and seamlessly blends one continent into another.

The All New Aquarium is inviting.

Recognizing visitors’ thirst for aquatic-themed memorabilia, the All New Aquarium incorporated a 5,000-square-foot retail space into its expansion plan. The Aquarium Shop, a bright, welcoming gift store, is a destination in and of itself. It features everything from unique Aboriginal artwork to underwater videos and DVDs, and teems with plush animals, toys, gifts, and apparel.

The Aquarium’s significant achievements were not accomplished easily or alone. Our plans and good intentions continue to become realities only through cooperation, alliances, and partnerships formed with individuals, groups, and institutions that share our commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment. You can become a partner in sharing the Aquarium’s vision by making a contribution, planning a legacy gift, or becoming a corporate sponsor. Call 410-576-3876 for more information.

The All New Aquarium is essential.

Much more than just Maryland’s leading tourist attraction, the Aquarium contributes substantially to the economic development of the region. The institution employs more than 300 area residents; conducts business with local vendors; and generates millions of dollars in revenue for neighboring stores, restaurants, and hotels by attracting tourists from all over the world.

Annual Giving

The Aquarium’s world-class past – and exciting future – would not be possible without the generous support of special friends who make annual contributions above and beyond their membership dues. These contributions help us achieve our mission, which grows more pressing and far-reaching every year.

The All New Aquarium is spacious.

The Visitor Welcome Center – a gift of the Blaustein, Rosenberg, and Thalheimer families – greets Aquarium guests with larger-than-life graphic panels, which grace the All New Aquarium’s airy entrance. Children, especially, watch with delight and surprise when the images transform from orange fish to green frog, from blue fish to yellow fish, as they ascend the escalator. The awe continues at the Harbor Overlook, a glorious spot for panoramic views.

The All New Aquarium is refreshed.

The long-awaited re-opening of the renovated Lyn P. Meyerhoff Auditorium coincided with the Grand Opening of Animal Planet Australia. Complete with an 8-minute film introducing visitors to animals authentic to the remote Australian Outback (like flying foxes, frilled lizards, and water monitors), the Auditorium returns as another valuable component of the Aquarium’s conservation education mission.

The All New Aquarium is matchless.

No other institution has ever attempted to interpret this particular ecosystem at the scale or level of detail as Animal Planet Australia. Visible throughout the Inner Harbor, residents and tourists glimpse the incomparable beauty that reigns inside the All New Aquarium. Visitors experience the breathtaking views that exist only in one other place – northern Australia.

The All New Aquarium is Alive.

From the River Gorge Overlook – a gift of the Hoffberger Foundation – visitors view many of the more than 50 plant species raised specifically for the All New Aquarium. While familiar Maryland greenery dots the Allegheny Cascades exhibit, the landscape of Animal Planet Australia showcases over 150 trees, plants, and shrubs – all indigenous to the remote Northern Territory. Native plants like pandanus and eucalyptus bring the habitat to life.

The All New Aquarium is educational.

More than slender-snouted freshwater crocodiles hide in the All New Aquarium’s exhibits. Opportunities for children of all ages to learn about the aquatic world reveal themselves on every wall. In 2005, the Aquarium admitted more than 72,000 Maryland schoolchildren for free – opening doors to new interests, introducing science in a meaningful way, and instilling the importance of conservation.

The All New Aquarium is Naturalistic.

Shingleback skinks bask on rocky cliffs. Car-size boulders and scorched branches divert remaining floodwaters. Arid heat settles between enormous red rocks, shaped by years of fire and flood. Colorful cockatoos swoop and squawk overhead. Only one thing could make Animal Planet Australia closer to the real Northern Territory – being there.

The All New Aquarium is remarkable.

After seven years of tireless research, 48-hour animal transports, hand-carved and scorched rocks, and seemingly endless construction, the All New Aquarium successfully completed its 65,400-square-foot expansion. With expected crowds of 1.8 million in 2006, the institution will continue to benefit the City, State, and extensive Bay region, as well as the people within its borders.

The All New Aquarium Is Worthy. The private non-profit National Aquarium in Baltimore relies upon the involvement and generosity of friends, corporate partners, and foundations. You can help the Aquarium make the connections that change lives, reclaim precious resources, and preserve environments for generations to come. In the process, you may find that the heart you touch, the mind you open, and the life you change is your own.

The All New Aquarium is imaginative.

Greeting visitors to the scenic Aquarium Concourse is the large head of a 24-foot-tall rainbow lorikeet. The Australian bird’s vivid blue, green, and orange hues lure guests onto the bridge, where the glass perimeter and extensive views encourage a feeling of flight. A mural this size lets visitors notice animal details they may have never observed before.
