Employment opportunities for our graduates continue to remain strong. The primary difficulty in tracking graduate employment is in reporting - students leave after they graduate and are surprisingly hard to locate! The following table shows estimates of our placement record, with the caveat that we have not been able to query all graduates, so many are placed in the “unknown” category with respect to first employment after graduation.

IV. STUDENT CHAPTER AWARDS AND ACTIVITIES

We have many active student organizations in the department. These range from student chapters of national professional societies (ASCE, ITE and AGC) to honor societies (Sigma Lambda Chi and Chi Epsilon) to state or local societies (MARLS and BREN Student Club). The following are summaries of the year’s activities for these vital and inspiring groups:

AGC

The MSU AGC Student Chapter was involved in the following activities during the 2005-06 academic year:

• Hot dog sales each Friday noon in Cobleigh Hall to partially fund the Reno competition trip.• Entered several teams in the Bowling for Kids Sake fund raiser sponsored by the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. The MSU AGC Student Chapter has consistently been one of the largest single MSU student group contributors to this effort.• Attended the MCA Annual Convention in Billings, MT where Montana Contractors once again supported student chapter activities with their auction.• Traveled to Reno, NV to participate in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) annual estimating competition...this year 5 teams attend representing design-build; commercial; heavy civil; marine and a graduate student team. Our commercial team came in 4th place, missing 3rd place by 1 point.

ASCE 2005-06

The Montana State University ASCE Student Chapter had a busy year, culminating with a trip to the regional student conference in Olympia, Washington in April 2006.  Nine students and one faculty advisor were hosted by St. Martins University, with a focus on the steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions.  The steel bridge team competed well, as did the concrete canoe team despite struggles with generating student support for the canoe construction phase. The year consisted of much more than the regional conference.  The chapter had monthly member meetings, with three business meetings in the fall of 2005, two of which had guest speakers.  The spring semester 2006 speaker schedule included presentations on Environmental Cleanup and Control of Asbestos in Libby, Traffic Control and Management Systems, and Mining Engineering.

- 8 -

Page 12: 2005-2006 Annual Report.doc.doc

Kyle Applebury was the winner of the ASCE Senior of the Year Award, and Clayton Zerbe was the recipient of a special student chapter contribution award. The major fundraising event for the fall consisted of providing traffic control at two MSU football games.  For spring fundraising, the chapter co-sponsored/organized the 2006 Spring Engineering Festival with ITE and BREN Club.  The seventh annual event was a large success, with all the proceeds from the festival going towards student activities, conference registrations and travel.  The student chapter is as always very appreciative of the continuous support from the Montana (Professional) Section of ASCE.

BREN Student Club

The BREN club is an organization on campus composed mainly of students pursuing the Bio-Resources Engineering option under the Civil Engineering curriculum, but is open to any student interested in further studies of an environmental nature. The club has monthly meetings with different guest speakers that provide a presentation over dinner. The club performs a public service twice annual clean-up of the Sheep Mountain Fishing Access Site as part of the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks adopt a fishing site program. The BREN club attended the 2005 meeting of the Center for Riverine Science and Stream Re-naturalization in Missoula, Montana. This adventure was a great way for students to witness real-world engineering problems and breakthroughs, outside of a scholastic situation. If you are interested in joining or presenting, please contact Joel Cahoon at [email protected].

known as “Engineering in the Schools.” Every week a couple Chi Epsilon members volunteer two hours of their time to help undergraduates by tutoring them in their first couple years of classes, predominately the engineering mechanics courses. The officers and a few members setup 14 FE review sessions every semester and find professors or graduate students willing to teach those sessions. All the chapter members have been involved in a Habitat for Humanity workday a couple Saturdays a year where they learn and/or put to use their construction skills for those in need in Gallatin County. They have also volunteered their time during Engineering Week to run a booth at a session for elementary age kids to learn about engineering. The Chi Epsilon booth this year showed the students how liquefaction works, how reinforcing in steel beams improves performance (if properly used), and demonstrated how technological advance can make the design process faster for designing bridges. The “Engineering in the Schools” program was a recently started by one of the Chapter’s graduate students with an aim to help high school juniors and seniors understand what engineering really is. So many of these students are pushed by parents, teachers, or counselors to go into engineering because they are “good at math & science” and yet they don’t know what they are choosing. This program has had a great response from students and teachers alike and is getting started on its second year.

Institute Of Transportation Engineers (ITE)

As Academic Advisor for the Montana State University-Institute of Transportation Engineers (MSU-ITE) Student Chapter, I am pleased with the enthusiasm, creativity and dedication put forth by the Student Chapter Officers. As detailed in the 2005-2006 MSU-ITE Student Chapter Annual Report, this year’s Officers delivered another full and well-balanced program of promotion, technical presentations, technical projects, field trips, public service and social activities that built upon the successes achieved by MSU-ITE in previous years. This year, the MSU-ITE Student Chapter successfully maintained their active involvement in technical projects. The Montana State University Institute of Transportation Engineers (MSU-ITE) Student Chapter in conjunction with Portland State University Institute of Transportation Engineers Student Chapter (PSU-ITE) conducted a study to investigate trip generation characteristics of drive-thru coffee stands. In this investigation road tube counters were used for data collection on the adjacent roadways and drive-thru area. The intent was to develop trip rates using a number of independent variables; these include the number of windows and volume of adjacent street traffic. The investigation is expected to benefit the larger traffic engineering profession by collecting data to support: (1) the trips

- 10 -

Page 14: 2005-2006 Annual Report.doc.doc

generated by this type of enterprise, (2) recommendations for locations based on analysis of current trends, and (3) correlating data between large metropolitan areas with that of smaller towns and cities.

The MSU-ITE also conducted the James H. Kell Student Competition during District 6 Annual Meeting in Kalispell, Montana in July 2005. Chapter members demonstrated and explained to other student groups what and how vehicle crash attenuators work. The student groups then build their own vehicle crash attenuator, using limited supplies, and tested the durability of their attenuator by crashing a toy vehicle, containing a raw egg, into the attenuator. The groups were judged on the survivability of the egg, the weight of the attenuator, and the length of time it took to build the attenuator. Also, the ITE Chapter was successful in making significant progress towards our target Endowment fund through their dedication to fundraising activities. Further, the MSU ITE Chapter organized several technical presentations on campus through inviting guest speakers from the transportation profession both from Montana and other states. c. Senior Exit Interviews

2005-2006 Senior Interview Summary

Senior exit interviews occurred on two occasions during the year. Civil Engineering students in the CE458 capstone course were interviewed in December of 2004 and May of 2005. The interviews were conducted by the department head and emphasized the total four year experience. During the interview, students were first asked to introduce themselves, and then tell where they were from and where they were going after graduation. A summary of where the graduating students were going is included the table below.
