    Anna Karina Johansen

  • Laying out Hidden Hollow (2010)

  • After growing up in the mountains of Vermont neighboring an organic farm and having an extensive garden of my own, an engineer for a father and a textile and stoneware designer for a mother, my childhood appreciation of plants, the natural world and design led me wholeheartedly to the field of landscape architecture.

A fresh graduate from Cornell University in 2004, I began working for Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates in Cambridge, MA, where I became intimate with the fine detail of projects at Wellesley College, worked solely with Michael on residential projects on Marthas Vineyard, and became lead designer on the large-scale, pro-grammatically and ecologically diverse Don River Park in Toronto. I brought my experience back to Vermont and started working for the fine design-build firm Shepard Butler Landscape Architecture in Thetford. I worked closely with clients, Shep and our crew to design and install numerous residential projects, some with pools and spas, others with simple native plantings and the Vermont vernacular of beautifully built and sited stone walls and terraces. I also began my own organic cut-flower business, Annas Blooms, to continue working our family land and to be involved in my local community. At the end of 2009, I joined Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio in Saxtons River where I had the opportunity to lead both public and private projects, from Hidden Hollow, a childrens outdoor classroom at Heritage Museum and Gardens, to highly personalized and innovative residential landscapes. I was awarded licensure in 2012 and continue to work with various firms and independently.

I believe that every landscape design project is a partnership between the true nature of a site, the designer, and the people who will enjoy and be stewards to it. I am dedicated to creating safe, pleasurable, timeless and engaging landscapes. Employing a purity of materials and proven methods, I also seek innovative solutions that combine beautiful design with ecological responsibility. I am a strong advocate for the use of native plants, to not only honor the environment but also to teach the public and contribute to the character of a place.
